Went there for a large group dinner after an event in the area. They did a good job handling orders and didn't take too long. The service is good too. It's pretty much a mom and pop restaurant. Reminds me of the restaurant we used to have growing up. If my memory is correct, I used to come here like 20 years ago (if it is still the same owners) when I took classes at Merritt College! It's definitely off the beaten path, and once you get to the parking lot, even a little bit more off the beaten path. The shopping center's been updated so definitely looks a lot nicer. They could definitely take down the Christmas wreath and lights already (it's the end of April) So the ambiance/decor could use some updating. It was overall clean, just old. I ordered the prawn and scallop with eggplant (generous portion), also got to try some won ton soup, salt and pepper pork chop , salt and pepper tofu. All good. On March 31st, I went to Hunan Yuan for lunch and the food was terrible. I'm guessing it was the regular Chef's day off. My original plan was to get a lunch plate. But the menu said the lunch plates only came with soup, steamed rice, salad and a the selected entree. Sounded boring. I decided to order some favorite dishes instead. I ordered: Wor Won Ton Soup and Tomato Beef Chow Mein. Tip: A small soup at Hunan Yuan is a medium at other Chinese restaurants. The menu said "Wor Won Ton Soup (S) $14.95." My server insisted that the small soup is a dinner serving. How can a small bowl of soup cost $14.95? I ordered it anyway. It's a medium bowl of soup that could serve two people. It had a light clear broth. The bowl was full of bok choy, chicken, pieces of beef, 1-2 shrimp, and 8-9 small dumplings. More like a snack, than a meal. The Tomato Beef Chow Mein was a sad dish. No flavor! Thick ropey noodles with some sort of sauce. Big chunks of tomato, onions, and bell pepper. It looked beautiful, but had no flavor. Will I return? Super rude service, order my food asked to eat outside and they hand me a to-go bag when the people right next to me gets all the fixings plates and are visited four times while the staff passes my table each time and I'm by the door. 50 bucks for two dishes which are bland and I could find them at any dive Chinese food or food truck. We were in the neighborhood and decided to give this restaurant a try. This is not a traditional Chinese restaurant as they include a green salad with their lunch daily lunches. The menu is very extensive with many options so it will suit a wide variety of tastes. First off, it's great that they offer brown rice as an option (and at a slight cost). The Kung Pao Tofu tasted very good. Although untraditional, it was kind of nice to have a green salad to balance the spiciness. The Kung Pao Chicken (mild) was tasty but needed a bit of salt. Lastly, we wanted Hong Kong style noodles with eggplant. It's not on the menu but they were accommodating. As you can see in the photo, the eggplant pieces were huge. The quantity of food was good but it was a bit of a messy plate. Oh, they provided a bowl of hot and sour soup with all of the lunches. It was more sour than hot and just OK. If in a bind, this is probably a safe place to visit. However, it may be worth driving a bit to Chinatown to get something more authentic. read more

It's a very typical Chinese food restaurant, that's not a good thing or bad. I talked to some people that been going there for 30 years. With all the options for Chinese food in the area that's saying something. It did remind me of one of my favorite Chinese restaurants, food was basically the same, which was good. Service was very prompt and available. I love the location of the restaurant up the hill off 35th next to Safeway. I enjoyed my food yes, just not over excited. The food quality here is poor. I ordered Chow Fun with chicken. It was almost exclusively noodles with almost no meat whatsoever. Additionally they forgot to season the food as the noodles were incredibly bland. Also the noodles were still stuck together. I'm not sure what they constitute as "cooking" beyond warming up noodles and tossing three or four tiny pieces of chicken into a plastic container. If it were cheap, I'd accept it. But it's not cheap. I only mention that I didn't get sick because that's the nicest thing I can think to say about this place. read more

We first found this place randomly after stopping at the Safeway in the same plaza and decided to try it out, despite the mediocre rating. It is a solid consistent spot for Chinese. Everything is always good and fresh. We prefer takeout versus dining in; no matter what we order it's always ready in 15 min. 10/10/21: After over a year of being closed! Hunan Yuan has re-opened! They opened their doors on Friday, and we have gone every day for take out since! Heaven knows we've missed good Chinese Food and have had a miserable time looking for a substitution... The downside is that the family that we had grown to love for 20 years no longer owns the restaurant. Hoping they are enjoying retirement. We will miss them.
