We came to Xochi to celebrate my husband's birthday and I made reservations. We were seated promptly and there was a happy birthday card signed by the owners. I really nice touch. We ordered some cocktails made with Mezcal and a moly tasting platter. Everything was delicious. Our waiter Carlos was very friendly and gave some good suggestions for food. We ordered beef, short rib, pork, shank, and scallops for main course. We also ordered some Calabazas and cauliflower sides. Every single dish was delicious and paired perfectly with a Molay sauce. We ordered a second round of drinks. Another great cocktails experience. Smoky Mezcal was fared perfectly with different fruits and citrus. We really enjoyed them. Although we were very full, we had to get dessert because we were celebrating. We ordered Cacao and a pumpkin mousse dessert. The pumpkin mousse was beautiful and amazing fall flavor. But the Cacao was out of this world. We couldn't tell that the shell was edible white chocolate filled with all kinds of chocolate goodies inside what a treat. I had a early reservation for New Year's Eve, it was very busy, but the staff was killing it there was no moment our waters were less than half way empty and the food was brought out very quickly. The menu was limited due to it being a prefixe menu, but every options was perfect Me and my fiancé ordered different options so we could try everything, and The drinks were balanced perfectly. Mexican food is known to be simple and inexpensive so I was initially hesitant to visit. My partner suggested that we celebrate my birthday here and was happy that I gave it a chance. I appreciated the attention to detail, the consistency of the food, and how all the flavors were perfectly picked so that every bite was an amazing one. The only thing keeping this from being a 5/5 was that the food was not very hot when it came out. Parking in downtown can be hectic but they offer valet. The inside of the restaurant was very clean and the decorations were nice, including the very real nopales on table (pls don't touch them, learned the hard way). What a gem of a restaurant! I was visiting Houston and found this restaurant, on Yelp of course. The ratings do not lie, service, ambiance, and food was all 100%! For food, the oysters are a great starter. Amazingly, they were enormous and the sauces they had complemented the sweet oysters. I also ordered their corn mezcal drink - did not have much corn flavor, but the drink was so beautifully presented especially with the corn in the toothpick. The braised pork was a tower, and it did not need a knife to cut through. It literally melted off the bone. The vegetarian mole had a great variety of mushrooms and the flavor was captivating. The biggest surprise was the dessert and it was also presented beautifully and the flavors are meshed so well together. Loved this place and service was amazing! Location: I went to Xochi for the first time with two associates last night. One I met in a professional environment a couple of years ago. I didn't live in Houston at the time but we have keep in contact since then so this was our first time out together. We, and another one of her friends, went to celebrate her birthday. Our reservation was during the start of a concert so valet was full but they were helpful in pointing out parking nearby. I was able to find free parking close by within a few minutes. Service: The waitress was attentive and friendly. However, I arrived first and asked for a recommendation on a shareable appetizer for the table and she recommended the lobster tacos. Except, when it came out it was only one taco and not shareable. When we placed our order, I discreetly asked her to put the entree of the one celebrating her birthday on my tab and she agreed. However at the end of the night I was told that they don't split tickets. I added my items, a drink, the two appetizers I ordered before the other two had arrived, mine and the other entree, one of the drinks from the birthday girl, and my after dinner drink, 10% tax and 25% tip and asked her to charge that full balance to my card. I had gone over what I was paying for with the friend of my associate as well so she could account for the remaining items and add her tax and tip appropriately since my balance would drop the remaining balance significantly. So when the waitress brought my recipe I wrote in a 0 for tip because my balance already including it. The waitress came over three different times to tell me I didn't leave a tip and I had to explain that I had multiple times. The last time I pointed out each thing I was responsible for, added it up, explained the 10% tax and 25% tip and did a final add to show her that what I paid was my full portion and that I was not responsible for the remaining balance after that. She was not rude about it but I was also trying not to make the one celebrating her birthday uncomfortable by talking numbers and prices and she came over three different times which was unnecessary. I didn't see what the other person left and wasn't going to turn the attention on her because that would have been as inappropriate as the waitress coming over three times to ask me about my balance. Food: Good but overpriced. It tastes good and is plated beautifully but the prices are not on par with food of this caliber. Also, I ordered a glass of a dessert wine at the end of the night which I received half full in a champagne flute. Champagne flutes are normally filled about 2/3 for a standard pour which is about an ounce less than the standard pour for wine. So a half full champagne flute is about half the standard pour of wine. Not sure if this is standard practice or if the bartender is not aware of the differences in the glasses and their purpose. But it's means the wine was either overpriced for the portion or they don't know what they are doing. Overall would not recommend. read more

The dinner menu at Xochi is truly the best value I've ever experienced for HRW. The food was simply phenomenal. Overall, I found the Clasico Menu to be the clear winner over the Mezcal Menu (and I'm a huge fan of mezcal!), but really, both were incredible (this is for HRW '23). The service was also thoughtful and attentive and the dishes were timed very well for our party of 6. The drink pairings for $32 were also impressive and full servings, not just tastings. The 1st and 4th cocktails on the Mezcal menu were absolutely bomb, the middle 2 weren't balanced. All of the wine pairings were lovely. We can't wait to go back and try their normal menu. read more

The food was absolutely incredible. For appetizers, we got ceviche, tostadas, and empanadas. All delicious. And for the meals, I got enchiladas but I really wish I would've gotten the Cachetes! Food was fantastic, service was great...my issue is with the valet. We parked our car with Xochi Valet. Had dinner, then went to Biggios in the Marriott Marquis (which is attached to Xochi). We go out to get our car at 11:55pm, and valet is gone. So we go talk to Marriott valet. They tell us that they have to email the GM, Manuel Ponce, and that he could respond in 15 minutes or the next day. Apparently he is the only one that can give permission to release our vehicle, so we were basically held hostage. We were not told that Xochi valet would be unavailable after a certain time, there is nothing on the ticket, so we were blindsided. The ambience is so elegant and beautiful! I came here to celebrate my birthday and boy, did I chose the right place! It was a huge hit amongst my whole friend group! We loved the ambience, service and the food! We were initially skeptical because the items on the menu are a bit hard to understand and priced very high. However, we quickly realized that the every item was well worth the price! Our waiter was very patient and explained every what every dish we had questions about was made of and how it tasted. He even allowed us to taste the mole before ordered since none of us have tried mole before! We also got habanero sauce on the side which was a great dip/topping for every dish we got! After traveling to Oaxaca, my perception of "Mexican" cuisine changed for the better! I never thought I would find a memela in Houston, but when I saw that we had a fine-dining Oaxacan restaurant beautifully placed in Discovery Green, I could not wait to give it a try. Xochi is located inside the Marriot and offers valet parking. It is a chic and modern restaurant, typical of upscale hotel restaurants. Once we were seated at our table, our waiter was completely dry and detached. When I asked him what sides came with the fish of the day, he responded "vegetables." Since I obviously wanted a detailed response, I asked what vegetables, in which he got irritated. As a waiter of a fine-dining restaurant, you should be able to describe a dish vividly rather than acting disinterested in the menu. Needless to say, I opted out of that item. I ordered the memela which came with roasted pork, refritos, crema, queso fresco, and a few dollops of a tangy tomatillo-avocado sauce- absolutely delish! I also ordered the tiradito which came with thinly sliced, extremely flavorful chiles with avocado mousse- a visually stunning dish. Our order of the pulpo arrived slightly undercooked in my opinion, however the thickness of the tentacles was noteworthy. Just want to point out that our waiter did not check on us once during this experience which led me to ask one of the bus boys for a dessert menu. I ordered the horchata mousse cake which was velvety and artfully crafted. Despite the exceptional quality of food, the overall experience was ruined by the less than subpar service. Our waiter treated us as a burden from the moment we sat down. After I left, I realized that I didn't ask about parking. The gentleman at the host booth politely informed me that I had to go to my waiter. I walked back towards him and he rudely said you are supposed to pay at the table. How am I supposed to know that? They have a whole separate vegan menu which is very impressive. Food was outstanding, we tried different dishes and shared a lot. Everything was great. I would warn that portions are large aka Texas style. So don't order like you are in NYC. Guacamole wasn't on the menu but they said they can make it for us and it was amazing. As a huge fan of Hugo's and Caracol, I have had Xochi on my radar for a while. I was quite excited to have a work meeting scheduled there, but then, unfortunately, was quite disappointed in the food and service during our meeting. Part of the disappointment could have been in the menu selection. I have read the Houston Restaurants Week (HRW) menus and know the variety that they have for vegetarians (like taquitos de papa and quilites and cauliflower enchiladas with mole de amarillo) and pescatarians (like the fresh catch of the day) and the choices look amazing. I also know how they can customize menus as the chef is so creative. The appetizers were good. The ceviche al tuna was fresh. Could have used more than one large round chip as it was being shared family style. The chicken was good. Chef Hugo Ortega is the Master of Mole and I could have scooped up the mole with a spoon. So delicious. If you were a vegetarian, you were out of luck as no other appetizer options were available. For dinner, I asked the waiter for his recommendation between the seafood/fish enchilada and the memelas de vegetales as the other options all had beef, pork or shellfish. Even the poultry choice was wrapped in bacon. Vegetarian enchiladas were not an option. The waiter highly recommended the memela. The memelas de vegetales tasted like two cold thick corn/masa pancakes covered with an assortment of cold vegetables, like mushrooms, zucchini and corn, with crema and queso fresca covered with a salsa albanil. It seemed more like a salad than an entree and several my vegetarian colleagues were surprised that this was literally the only vegetarian option on the entire menu for the evening other than the black beans, rice and peas and the desserts. Ordered a Mexican hot chocolate which was delicious (although it took an hour to get), they forgot one of my colleague's meals (which had to be reordered) and I took the chocolate tres leches to go. The acoustics in the banquet room were poor. You could hear the noise from the restaurant and as the microphone was not working, it was impossible to hear the speakers during their presentations. Parking is available for $12. Free street parking is available if you are lucky to find a spot near Discovery Green. Would I come back? To Hugo's or Caracol, definitely. To Xochi, I'm not so sure. Hopefully, it was just an off night, but I would not recommend the banquet room at Xochi for a work meeting where you had to be able to hear multiple speakers. read more

For someone that has only eaten mostly Tex-Mex, this was a dream come true for me as I got to try so many Mexican cuisines for the first time. Loved all the vegetable options such as squash and cactus! I wasn't a huge fan of the meats, a lot of which were chicken, and some of the pork were a bit dry, but man did the food pay for itself with the oysters, guac, and all the expensive berries at the end for dessert. Stopped in here for lunch after our Houston Hyrox race. This was my first time at a traditional oaxacan restaurant. This was a great first experience we got great service and even though this wasn't what I was used to as far as Mexican it was still a great culinary experience. I've been frequenting Xochi since it first opened and it remains one of the spots I recommend anyone new to Houston to try. Parking / Location The restaurant is attached to the Marriot Marquis. There is some street parking around, but it is very dependent on when you visit. Generally speaking I would not bank on that unless you're willing to walk a good distance. There is also valet parking available at the door or at Marriot Marquis for $11 (unfortunately they raised the price as it used to be $8). Food / Drink We've tried many appetizers and generally speaking any of the crudos will be good albeit sometimes a bit too citrusy. The queso de rancho is quite good, don't be scared of the insects haha. Or give the Molotes de Xoxocotlan a try. For main dishes, we've had throughout multiple visits some that stood out were the Barbacoa de res de Zaachila, Bistec con mole de chicatana, and Tlayuda de res. The wood fired oysters (Ostiones de Lujo) are a good. In our most recent visit we tried the Codorniz and the Callo de Hacha. I'd say they were both ok, neither really wow'd us. The Callo de Hacha features the mole verde, but it isn't the most forward flavoring. That said the scallops were cooked perfectly and were delicious. The quail was underwhelming in my opinion and there's some other spots in Houston that have better takes on how to serve this type of bird. However, their standout is the mole (obviously, it's Oaxacan based food). Thus, most the dishes with alot of mole sauce, including some of above mentioned dishes, is going to be a pretty good bet because this is what it's all about. If you're looking to give each a try, they have a tasting plate, which features four of the seven. Drinks are always fantastic here. While some are better than others, you really can't go wrong with what you pick. I forget which margarita it is, but they will shake it tableside it that's your thing. For desert the cholcate and churro is always a great option, particularly in the colder months of Houston. Service Generally the servers are quite attentive and helpful if you're having a difficult time making a decision. There have been a couple occasions where it's a bit slow in getting your dishes. This was the case on our most recent visit, but they were absolutely slammed too. We still managed to make it out in a little over 1.5 hours. Cost The pricing is very varied so it depends what you're willing to spend. There are some great dishes at each price point. Overall Whether you live in Houaton or it's surrounding areas, or maybe you're just visiting, give this place a try! read more

Xochi's Sunday brunch buffet is a great way to treat yourself. There's delicious food, great service, and you get to try items you probably never think to order from the menu. Our party of three made reservations for 10 one Sunday and we ended up being a little early. We were let in and hung out in the front area for a few minutes while they set up. There is plenty of indoor seating and a few smaller tables for outdoor seating on their patio. We ended up with a table right next to the food. There is a long table set up with appetizers and mains and then anothet section dedicated to desserts. I got one of almost everything and these were the items I remember most. Green sauce and guacamole: holy guacamole these were good! Incredible refreshing flavors and I ended up topping lots of items with these sauces. There was also a red sauce but for me, the greens stole the show. Roasted potatoes: very well seasoned, roasted perfectly for a slightly crispy exterior and soft interior, and cut up to a perfect bite sized portion. Did I think going in that the humble roasted potato would end up being one of my favorite items? Absolutely not. Arepas: filled with chicken, cheese, and veggies, this one is a stomach filler. The dough was a little crispy and was sturdy enough to hold all the fillings in. Chicken was moist and delicious. Of course, I alternated bites by topping it with green sauce and guac. Tamales: moist and packed with flavor. It's a tamale. Chicken enchiladas: these were one of my least favorite items. The flavors didn't all come together and the forn tortilla wasn't quite soft enough. A rare miss for me. Brisket with mole sauce: turns out I don't like mole sauce. But tge brisket was moist and yummy. Huevos rancheros: another miss for me only because the eggs looked and tasted very rubbery. The flavors were there but I had a hard time getting past the eggs. Dessert winners: mini cherry hand pies, chocolate cookie, chocolate cheesecake, macarons, macaroons, and churros. I went back for seconds. And thirds. Looking for a place to have lunch and did a Yelp search and saw this as the first option and after reading about it we headed there. First impressions were exceptional; the outside figures, the "flying" birds upon entering, the impressive beams on the ceiling actually hanging in the air with iron brackets, the interior walls wrapped in rope... Then we lucked out and were greeted by Carlos; an amazing server who was extremely informative, not only explained everything in detail, made amazing suggestions, but also answered all our questions. We ordered Mezcal based drinks I ordered the Xochi Rita; made with mezcal and the glass rim had gusano salt (crushed worms in the salt with Cheyenne pepper) and my wife ordered the Thorny Ranch Water with Prickly Pear and lime and she substituted the mezcal for the tequila. Both drinks were delicious and the Smokey Mezcal was an interesting experience. The food was nothing short of spectacular! Chilaquiles was my dish: skirt steak bathed in salsa verde over corn tortilla chips (which are soft), topped with two sunny side up eggs. The best plate both my wife and I have ever had! Wife ordered Aguachile Mandarina; spicy yellow fin tuna "ceviche" tartar with mandarin aguachiles, mezcal, cucumbers and onion served beautifully on a bowl with flowers. We had a party to attend to after lunch and could not get the food we had here out of our minds, SO.... We returned for drinks and appetizers after the party and stayed until closing. We had the same drinks and had amazing Lobster tacos with a generous piece of lobster in each and shrimp empanadas; delicious. Highly recommend it. It is a must go restaurant. We're now planning another trip to Houston to go experience the dishes created by this first Mexican Born James Beard winner and 6 consecutive times nominee and winner of Best Chef: Southwest-James Beard Awards (2017) . Hugo Ortega's and his wife Tracy's other restaurants in Houston: Hugo's, Backstreet Cafe, Caracol and URBE (all "Top Table" by Bon Appetit, and Best Restaurant in America by Eater and named one of Houston's Four Top Latin Restaurants by Forbes Travel Guide; and included in "What Makes Houston's Next Great American City?" Found this restaurant on accident after walking around downtown. I was looking for somewhere to get a drink and was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance. Although it is not on their menu, I ordered a French 75 and my partner asked for a spicy margarita mocktail. The bartender made the mocktail look so pretty, it looked like a regular spicy margarita and it tasted good. My drink was also good. While we were there we decided to get an appetizer so we had the guacamole and tostadas which we enjoyed. I could go through every detail of each dish we had, but the bottom line is that you cannot go wrong here. The mole is divine -- no matter the one you choose -- and the meats are melty and cooked/seasoned to perfection. The garnishes are bright and expertly pulled off. The cacao (dessert) is not only fun, but it is a uniquely delicious ending. Bravo! Hugo Ortega is an innovator, and this menu reflects that. His team is obviously trained very well, though I felt a little rushed toward the end of my experience here. Also, I'm a beer guy at heart, and I wish that menu could be expanded a little. Either way, I would come back here in a heartbeat. This is one of those restaurants that you treat your out-of-town visitors to. Impressive indeed. read more
