The waitress snatched the menu out of my hand after humiliating me for simply making a request for gluten free options (Naruto sushi.) then she scolded me like a child, telling me they don't do that, in spite of pictures in their own menu and advertising to the contrary. I have never had a more terrible experience with eating out, and would strongly urge anyone who wants to find a place that will accommodate their customer's dietary needs to look elsewhere. Terrible, horrible service. It too me over 15 minutes to flag down a waitress to even make a request, there is absolutely no desire to aid their patrons there. I'm not a fan of places that don't go above and beyond when paying customers are looking for an enjoyable night out, and the place wasn't even packed, there was absolutely no excuse for the way I was treated. This place is really good considering it is basically a buffet. The food is priced by the color coded plate it's on and reasonable for quality/quantity (well except the fresh fruit was a tad over priced). I give 4 stars because it is way better than standard buffet sushi (yuck), but it is still buffet despite the option of ordering from a menu. Everything I ate tasted fresh and good quality, even the nigiri. My SO really liked the cool boats floating by with little trial size plates of food waiting to be plucked off deck. Biggest dissapointment: only dessert options were those little squares of mousse cake and overpiced fresh fruit. read more

I'm acknowledging that it may be the most popular sushi place in Redding now -- packed last night on a Thursday. And yeah, snagging dishes that look tasty off of the floating boats that circle the bar is a "fun idea." The people sitting to our right at the bar were sushi novices and seemed to be having a great time. Maybe an okay place to take someone for Japanese Cuisine 10: Introduction to Sushi. But here's the problem: Not that much stuff that was rafting by on the boats looked tasty. Yama Sushi is like Burger King. Damn, that Whopper looks sexy in the glam shot on the menu! WTF is this thing that I got when I ordered one? At Yama, you're looking at the pictures on the menu -- ooh, that looks good! -- and then you're looking at the boats floating by and you're thinking: Huh...... Is that......? Is that the.......? Mango, maybe? What the hell IS that? And then there was the young woman playing piano near the entrance -- the kind of New Age compositions that maddeningly repeat the same themes over and over, which is supposed to be kind of soothing......I guess. I went to Yama today for lunch with a friend who recently moved back from Texas. We thought it would be a great place to go seeing as how we've both been there before with no problems before. That was a mistake. We were graciously greeted at the door by a few of the waitresses/hostesses and promptly seated at the bar. We received a menu to look over in case we wanted to special order anything from the sushi chefs. We sat there for over 10 minutes waiting for our waitress to come check on us and ask if we needed help deciding on anything from the menu; she never did. So we grabbed one of the sushi chefs and asked him to take our order. The first words from his mouth were, "What do you want?" What a great way to start your meal, right? No. When we ordered, my friend and I were joking around, casually talking about our week when we looked across the bar to see pre-made sushi in plastic wrap. I'm sorry, but when you go to a sushi place, you're excited to see them make it in front of you or wait a good 5 or 10 minutes before you get your food. When the chef took my order, he grabbed a roll out of the plastic wrap and drizzled sauce and sprinkled sesame seeds on the top. That right there made my stomach turn. Pre-made sushi at a sushi bar where you have 3-5 men working behind the counter, and you can't have 1 of them freshly prepare my sushi? Furthermore, when my friend ordered a fresh plate of teryaki chicken, she mentioned that the ones on the boats had been sitting a while. The waitress asks us, "Do you want us to heat it in the microwave for you?" Uhh, what? I'm sorry, but she asked for a FRESH plate of teryaki chicken, not a microwaved plate of teryaki chicken. And, to top it all off, our waitress didn't check on us a single time we were there to make sure the food was good, or even if we were having a good time. And at the very end when we checked out, she hovered behind us to make sure we were leaving a tip. How rude is this waitress? Did she expect a tip after nothing she was supposed to do? This trip to Yama Sushi was by far the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. Not only did our waitress not check on us, but she offered to microwave the food we wanted because it was cold. Nonetheless, this waitress did not receive a tip and I WILL NOT be coming back. It was a waste of $30 and a horrible experience in all. I do not recommend going here for sushi whatsoever. If you want a quality sushi experience with FRESHLY made sushi, I would try Tokyo Garden. Much better service, very decently priced, great portion sizes, and all-around better atmosphere. read more

What A rip off place, The ole Bait and Switch is alive and operating here in Redding. First, they have little boats floating around, you pick them and as the product ages, they cover with glass covers, sits for along time and gets old, not made to order fresh sushi waiting for someone to lift off boat. That did not appeal to me... I asked for made to order and was handed Menu by my wait person who was white and spoke English well. MENUS had no prices, however she said prices followed colored plated form that was posted on glass over hang. I ordered two plates at 3.50 each for little snack, plates came back different from chef and I asked waitress and then Chinese lady/Manager who said they were new (MENU)and wrong, told me that these were the correct plates, I showed her again pictures of my desired order, again she said menus wrong... I told her I wanted plates for price on board, (Red ones), and in my MENU, not the 5.95 plate food served on. I asked if owner was in, He agreed to take my payment I agreed to order but asked me to never come in again. I did nothing wrong, asked waitress for help, and this is the con game they run at the Yama Sushi. Stay away, you will be ripped off while not realizing it. We only had sushi rolls: One roll was $17, others were around $12, most tasted about the same, nothing wowed me. I didn't feel this place was worth the price. And that never feels good. After taking my 1st bite, I immediately found my waitress and told her to cancel my take home order because I didn't like them. She refused. She told me they're already being made. I consider myself a sushi novice. I've tried 20-25 different varieties, and for the most part have thoroughly enjoyed almost all the food so far. That was until I treated my lady to a pre-movie, healthy snack at Yama Sushi. I do not enjoy writing negative reviews, and you won't find too many in my history, but I have to tell of my experience here. We sat down for 15 minutes, waiting for fresh sushi rather than at the floating menu table. After we got our two separate tuna dishes, we each took a bite and realized that the tuna was luke warm. Hands down, this is an incredible sushi joint. How can you not love the tiny boats, chained together and floating in that tiny river carrying those delicious treats. I had never ventured outside of my sushi comfort zone before Yama, and I thank this place for opening my eyes to all the wonderful offerings. I got the 'Oh my god' roll and the seared tuna salad. Roll- I was expecting it to be large because it was fifteen dollars, however when I received it the roll was pretty small. Good amount of spicy tuna however for a roll of that price, I'd expect it to be bigger. Salad- Nice big chunks of tuna, however it was also fairly small. They had something on it that resembled cheddar cheese, however it tasted really gross almost like poorly made soy cheese. Still not quite sure what it was. The sauce was spicy but boring. Ahhh yes, my first five star review!!! First of all, I must say HOLY CRAP this place is awesome!! We were greeted with smiles and pleasantrys as soon as we walked in. It wasn't too busy so we were immediately seated, and our drinks were out in what seemed like seconds. The owners even took time to sit down and chat for a bit!!! So impressed! My boys have been here a few times, and absolutely love the sushi boats floating by at the sushi bar. I am pretty new to the whole sushi thing, so I went easy, the California roll, and a Cinderella roll(but I did try a friend's Caterpillar roll), they all tasted amazing and sooo fresh, and the prices were awesome!! Pretty good, very hard to find good Sushi in Redding. For Redding, I'd say it's a 5 star compare to SoCal it's a 3. No fresh Wasabi or Toro, but can't blame them as I'm the only one that would order it. Pros: Variety of dishes is good, plates are $2-$5 so compare to a full size roll it's the same cost as other places but you're not committed to an entire roll. They mix it up often, interesting items like tempura avocado, cheese cake, etc. The theme is really cute, live piano player is always a nice touch. We ordered Hamachi sashimi $16- so not cheap but good. Cons: If you're theyre on a busy night you'll have to fight for food I assume, don't really know. If you're there when it's slow the rolls will not be as fresh as they try to keep the boats full for presentation and selection. We'll be back. read more

Oh boy, did we stuff ourselves silly with sushi and sake! I've been to Yama several times, but last night everything was extra amazing and spot on. As you can see by the stack of plates we tried pretty much everything. The chef even made amaebi that was so beautiful in presentation I didn't want to eat it, but gladly did. Some other firsts I had was tuna mixed with spicy, cilantroey, mango salsa served in endive lettuce cups, dragon balls, and a roll covered in black tobiko. Everything was fresh and delicious. If you like sushi, give Yama a try and if want a mouthful of heaven, order the honey prawns. They're like crack! read more

For this town... Yama is pretty darn good. We prefer to sit at the sushi bar and chose from their selection of goodies ranging from mini sushi rolls, fried prawns, octopus and even cheesecake. The boats give the place a nice fun atmosphere. Most weekend evenings they've got the piano bar going for some wonderful ambiance. The staff remembers us so it's a treat. Be prepared on occasion to wait a bit for refills or orders from the kitchen.. They get rushes and then unserstaffed.. But it's never stressfull. We've tried a number of their rolls and have yet to be disappointed. Great place to get the kids to try all types of sushi without paying a fortune! read more

I am avid supporter of business in our beautiful city, and my son looked forward to having us all share in the Korean BBQ experience with him as soon as he saw that this place opened. This was the worst restaurant experience I have had in Redding and was every costly. We were seated and only one of two tables when we arrived, after an hour and ten minutes we had each eaten about 5 bites of food, asked several waiters for help and just had no idea what was going on. I should say there is an hour and a half time limit. Well how was that going to work? Behind us someone was seated and got food within about 15 minutes! When we finally got up to leave so we could go home and eat I asked to speak to a manager. I told her that this has been horrible and we should not be charged full price. She proceeded to not only charge me full price but the adult price for my child aged daughter $102 total for almost no food. The. Told me Korean bbq takes awhile and I should learn some patience. We went home to eat. So disappointed. I was going to go back the next day and give feedback or see if we could try again, but after reading other reviews to the same effect decided not worth my time. read more

This used to be our go to sushi place until we tried Kobe Seafood & Steakhouse (fresh fish and big portions). Comparing the two this place is mediocre. I agree with other reviewers about the sushi sitting out for awhile and getting stale/soggy. They make their small plated sushi ahead of time and cover them with clear wrap and put them on the boats as people eat them. They are a bit pricey for 4 pieces of sushi too. The sushi at Yama is like crack! It's not like I'm a connoisseur by any means, but the floating buffets of goodness have me coming back so often, I think I need to get a second job to support my habit.! My very favorite is the Lover Roll; a perfect balance of crab, spicy tuna, deep fried shrimp, avocado, and tobiko. I also love the sauce they smother everything in, I believe it's the same they use on the Honey Prawns, which are also outstanding. Make sure you order these hot and fresh. Every time I dine in, I love venturing a little more outside my box and trying something new. It's not to say the place isn't without their bad days. Make sure you don't come in near the end of lunch or closing, because the selection becomes very limited. Sometimes the busier it is, the more unique things you will find. But I'll take the good with the bad and call it an even draw. Service here is great some days, and lacking others, depending on how hopping the place gets. It's fun to come with a few friends or a date, and most often, you will meet some pretty interesting people sitting around you. My 10 year old daughter even considers it a high honor when I treat her to a meal at Yama. Beat that Hometown Buffet! Yama is just plain fun, unique and tasty. I dig this place--it has great, affordable sushi in a fun atmosphere. The only thing is, it's different from standard sushi places because if you want sushi-to-order--you can't fill out a short order form to hand to the guy behind the counter--you have to track your server down and pray they don't look at you like you have three heads when you order something that isn't on the menu. I always order 6 pieces of Hamachi (which is just basic yellowtail)--and each time the server has looked at me and said, "Hamachi?!" like I just ordered something in Spanish. We discovered Yama Sushi with Yelp and our experience exceeded expectations. I'm generally not a fan of sushi that travels around on a carousel but this time was different. The carousel is a stream of water and the plates travel about on little boats. My munchkins thought this was the coolest thing ever ... well, in regards to sushi carousels, anyway. I almost downgraded this rating to a 3-star because the prices have really soared here and I think the place is a bit over-priced now but we don't have that many good Japanese food options in the Redding area. I really love the service, how clean this place is and the live piano player. My kids love the boats. And my whole family consistently loves the food here. If you don't eat raw fish don't forget that there are more cooked items than raw on the menu here. I adore the udon dinners. Last night my son had the beef udon and I had the chicken udon. Hubby had a combo meal with veggie tempura, eel, tuna and california rolls, soup + salad... daughter had her standard chicken teriaki and rice. We all had tea. The bill with tip (20%) was almost $100. So that's a little too steep even for sushi and we didn't order any beer/wine. For that price I think we just won't be coming back very often. I'm not a Sushi lover...though I have had Sushi once and it was here at Yama. It was good, but I have nothing to compare it too. I was there with a couple other Sushi novices and the waiter was super helpful with the recommendations and even offered to take one roll we didn't like and replace it with another. I remember getting the Dragon Balls and everyone at our table loved them. I also tried something with mango on top and it was very tasty. On my most recent visit I had the chicken Udon and it was just OK. I envied my friend's Bento box with tempura and terriyaki chicken though and wished I'd gotten that instead. I haven't sat at the bar with the boats but feel that would be fun while dining with just 1 or 2 people. The atmosphere is perfect for a lunch date. read more

It's been a little while since coming back to Yama Sushi, my original concern is how their quality control works. This is a neat place with boats of sushi going around the sushi bar and you just pick up what you want. There is a large variety of sushi to choose from, and for those who don't care for sushi, there's always the teriyaki chicken, honey prawns (yum), or beef short ribs. You see, if you pick something that is normally supposed to be served warm and find that it isn't, my thought is how long it's been going around the sushi bar for? To avoid that, I usually ask for a freshly cooked item. Here's another tip, go around lunch or dinner time (the sushi bar may be full), but at least you know that the sushi has been prepared fresh. read more

Ive never sat table side or been there for dinner. But lunch was great! Today I went on a Friday and the selection was great! There were probably 15 different types of rolls going around on the boat plus appetizers, teriyaki chicken, and desserts. I would suggest that anyone who LOVES avocado try the tempura fried avocado spears. They are served with a spicy mayo and is absolutely delicious. Seared albacore sushi is our favorite here. Delicious. We've been coming to Yama for years. I've tried other sushi places in Redding, but we keep coming back here, as they're consistently good. The food is tasty and the atmosphere has something for everyone. Sit at the bar and grab plates from the "sushi boats" or order fresh. Sit at the quiet tables, and you can still grab stuff from the bar if you want. Win-win. They've *always* been nice to my kids, giving hugs and smiles and bringing them sodas occasionally. They aren't eating sushi yet, but love the teriyaki chicken and the fried shrimp from the "boats," in addition to the edamame and sesame-seed balls dessert. 2nd time here. Here some reasons for 1 star review. The food is terribly overpriced for the quality and quantity. Miso tasted like dirty bath water,!Wasabi tasted like it was diluted with something, it had no kick to it. Water tasted like chlorine. The place is not well kept. The food we tasted was not very good, it had no flavor. The waiters were attentive! Redding needs more authentic Japanese places, but this one is not even close. IMHO Chinese people should stick to selling Chinese food please prove me wrong. If you want to do something do it well! I would suggest not eating at this place because I don't think it is worth the money for the quality of the food And it's flavorless! read more

Being a Bay Area native, this is one of my favorite sushi places of all-time. I love their sushi boat bar. Their service is good; if you have any questions their servers are usually there to answer any questions about what you've pulled off the floating boat. I really liked their unagi (freshwater eel) sushi rolls. I recommend them. I really have not had anything I did not like at this restaurant. They have good desserts and fruit plates too. The fried bananas are to die for (so yummy). I think there's a large assortment of food options for the whole family. My wife and I even got her dad to try sushi and he loved it. Warning: each little sushi boat plate can be between $2.00-$5.00, which can rack up the bill really fast. I highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner.
