Being a Bay Area native, this is one of my favorite sushi places of all-time. I love their sushi boat bar. Their service is good; if you have any questions their servers are usually there to answer any questions about what you've pulled off the floating boat. I really liked their unagi (freshwater eel) sushi rolls. I recommend them. I really have not had anything I did not like at this restaurant. They have good desserts and fruit plates too. The fried bananas are to die for (so yummy). I think there's a large assortment of food options for the whole family. My wife and I even got her dad to try sushi and he loved it. Warning: each little sushi boat plate can be between $2.00-$5.00, which can rack up the bill really fast. I highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner. 2nd time here. Here some reasons for 1 star review. The food is terribly overpriced for the quality and quantity. Miso tasted like dirty bath water,!Wasabi tasted like it was diluted with something, it had no kick to it. Water tasted like chlorine. The place is not well kept. The food we tasted was not very good, it had no flavor. The waiters were attentive! Redding needs more authentic Japanese places, but this one is not even close. IMHO Chinese people should stick to selling Chinese food please prove me wrong. If you want to do something do it well! I would suggest not eating at this place because I don't think it is worth the money for the quality of the food And it's flavorless! read more

Love the boats! The sushi was good, and very nicely priced. My friend and I were sharing all the plates we got and were stuffed by the end of the night and ended up spending around $20 for everything. The only complaint I have was that the live music playing that night was a country singer...in a sushi bar....ummm.....yeah. Very nice, simple, clean restaurant with exceptional service. Not kitschy or overdone. I was really happy with how quickly we were seated with a group of 12 with no reservation. Live piano music the night we were in (Saturday). Servers were very open to give us suggestions, help us choose from the menu. Did not pick from the sushi boats floating around the bar but other patrons were dining at the bar ad seemed to have a good experience. Sushi was awesome, freshly made, very good! Best sushi joint in redding in my opinion. Staff is always there to fill your glass and take special orders. The sushi chefs have a sense of humor that makes you feel comfortable and welcome. I bring my one year old child and they don't mind flipping high chairs around so his car seat will fit. As a celiac I have to be very careful, which means I often get bland boring food...well not at Yama Sushi! Ray was working the sushi bar and is super passionate about what he does. I'm still venturing in to the sushi world but for what I have tried so far (not sure what I ate), it was pretty good. They have small plates floating on boats in front of where you sit and you can pick a plate (or many) that look good. Or you can order off a regular menu. The plates are all priced differently but there is a guide to that in front of the seats. The only thing was a little annoying, is that the meal ended up being so cheap it was under $10, and for that they wouldn't accept cards, only cash. Definitely going back though! read more

Last time I came here the fish was basically old. Best way to describe it. Everything used to be good but it's trash now. Bummer.

The rating on this place gave me high expectations and they were not met at all. Everything about it was low grade. The fish wasn't very good, the rolls were unoriginal and the cooked food was mediocre at best. The saki menu is small but the beer was at least cold... I would certainly not go back as I would much rather go somewhere more original with better fish quality. It wasn't even a cheap meal. Very disappointing all the way around. read more

I'm assuming it was the owner who helped us. She was extremely rude and would walk away mid conversation to help someone else. Our order was messed up twice and we were charged for something we didn't order. She was very argumentative when we explained we didn't order what she tried to bring us. What can you say about this place ? It is great ! Just sitting there watching the little boats float on by is great. The Sushi is good and very affordable. I have gone to other Shshi restaurants in town and they cost twice as much. This is not the best Sushi I have ever had, but for the price you really get your mony's worth. As for sushi in Redding, Ca it is hard to find the best of the best. So what do you look for... quality with variety. Yama has been a delight to have when looking for more than just one dish of sushi. The bar is a unique sight and easy to work with. You can go cheap here or feel upper class if you would like. Everything is up to you. The bar is a brilliant idea and speeds up the process of the meal. Prices are to your liking and can be put to your budget based on what you decide to get. Variety is big for me at a sushi bar and Yama provides a great variety for everyone's tastes buds. Can get pretty busy at times, but you may sit at the tables outside of the bar and still stand by the bar to grab things from the boats. Not many people know of this. read more

This place is not as good as it seems. My family and I wanted to eat at the all you can eat BBQ. I asked if one of our family member could have a veggie dish but still eat with us as he is a vegetarian and the manager was rude and said no everyone has to pay to sit at the buffet and ignored us. If the manager/owner is treating customers that was will never return or recommend this place. on top of changing their menu price from $23.99 to $27.99 and we where willing to pay that. I have been a long time costumer of Yama Sushi. It's either good or ok but today it was truly terrible. The first thing we asked for when we sat down was an order of honey prawns and extra ginger. After ordering our full order of something we have had many times and enjoy there we grabbed a couple plates off the boats. We know to wait a few rotations to see what is fresh but unfortunately all the sushi was premade behind the counter and it looked like the were just putting a new plate of the same roll out every 5 minutes. All dangerously warm and not on ice. The waitress came by with my prawns but there was just two when the full order has six, 15 minutes later the manager came out with the same plate of two prawns (we corrected them again). Waiting for over 30 minutes now for the same prawn dish they finally came out. Unfortunately for them we saw them taking 3 appetizer 2-piece orders off the sushi boats to create our full order which was disgustingly soggy. We then promptly asked for the check. 15 minutes later we had to get up and ask for it again. And finally we got to pay for the worst sushi and prawns I've ever had in my life. No apologies. I'm still waiting on the extra ginger I asked for 3 times. read more

Amazing food and service, the wait staff is very organized and very courteous. The chefs are top notch and will make food based on how they perceive you for the kaiten-zushi that they send around on the boats. Only complaint thing I can kind of complain about is the mismatched decor and that in itself is just nitpicking. read more

I was a regular until recently when I was over charged for a meal. The food is Redding's best sushi, but when I asked for the bill to be reviewed (since the server made a mistake), I did NOT receive fair service. I was expecting to be $6 max. I really should have walked out without paying. I was shocked by the bill, and even had the chef mention in broken English the order was unusual for one person. I waited for my special boat order to come via the floating conveyor, then after 20 minutes received my "special order". It wasn't special, in fact it was a mis-order. I had a manager review the problem, but she offered no assistance. I have never had an experience where the restaurant doesn't bend over backward to make things right - especially when they see the meal wasn't eaten. Needless to say when I told them I'd never come again - it's true. Now when groups of friends are interested in going, I strongly oppose them, and we eat at another restaurant. Thanks a lot Yama Sushi - you took my $21 - but you'll never get another penny of mine. read more

About the best in Redding. But...too many dishes with goop squirted all over. Sushi is not supposed to be afestival of squeze bottle sauces. They cover up some great tasting fresh fish. Huge selection of dishes from tempura to yakisoba. I spent 30 min just reading the 30 page menu. I really thought this place had some really fantastic sushi!!! It was for sure fresh and had some creative dishes! U can choose to sit at a table or the bar and watch the boats go by! Grab what u want to eat or order something from the menu! The dragon balls were my favorite dish of the night by far!! They were fresh from the deep fryer, flavorful, and have a nice spicy kick!! If you don't like anything spicy, check out the dragon roll instead. The price really depends on how hungry you are and how much you order. I like to order everything, so you can see it in the bill.
