This is a Tuesday and the B team is on. That's Ok. Every server acted like they were surviving the night (holocaust). I looked at the roll menu and ordered # 17. Crouching Tiger Roll (Soft shell crab, cucumber and avocado topped with eel, avocado and tobiko) I asked if it was really soft shell crab (as they sub fake Krab (Kani) and other crab all the time). My server said it's a mixture. I said "No" I want what it says. There was little tobiko and barely any sauce. (B team and they skimp a LOT). When the roll was delivered 30 minutes later I called for the mamasan. (Chiu, Liu...) "This doesn't look like the picture". "fine...." Fixed it. Great roll then.I watched mamasan chew out gals on the floor for an hour. She saw me looking at the menu. "What's wrong now!" Not "Hi can I help you?" "What you want now!." " I said I want you to talk to me, not at me. I want you to treat your employees with respect" I did repeat her words loudly "What you want Now!" She got the bouncers, and paid my tab after I tipped the piano player. The crew is good. The cooking is good. They live in fear and I really HATE that when dining. This has been brewing. I hate owners that disrespect their employees, especially in front of other customers.Thank's for picking up the tab Liu. Your employees saw somebody stand up to you. It wasn't busy and there was no need to chew on the staff. I can eat elsewhere. Someplace where they don't LIE about the crab! Go here if you love oppressive owners! read more

I don't care how cliche sushi boats are...i love them. Nothing is more fun then watching raw fish float by, all while scouting the perfect plate. At the end of this fishing excursion you get to add up your meal with the type of plate. First place in Redding that I've found with the boats...good times. Sushi is pretty good, I would like more raw fish, less yakitori...fried "fill in the blank" and cream cheese maki rolls; but that's the beauty of the boat, you eat what is given you. Additionally, great service, menu looks good if you prefer to order over the more active experience and overall my new favorite sushi joint in Redding. read more

Excellent sushi in Redding? You bet!!! We eat sushi often and rate this up with some of the best as we've traveled the country. Edamame was a large portion, hot and flavorful. Rolls were well formed and with nice presentation. Sashimi was fresh and firm. Seared ahi tuna salad was fresh but a bit spicy for my wife. Mango Love Roll was tasty combination we had never seen before. We opted for a table vice dealing with the small boats at the sushi bar ( though it looked like it could be fun) Service was excellent with multiple servers being attentive to us. The piano player played a variety of classical music and was a wonderful and soothing touch after a day of travel. The perfect ending to a wonderful dining experience was the mochi ice-cream (mango, strawberry & green tea) . read more

My local friends go here for quick sushi... I'll just leave my thoughts on the floating fish out of it. I was somewhat disappointed with the fact that they didn't have much going on as far as veggie rolls go. Seeing as there was not much to choose from, that made my choice pretty easy. I had the vegetable tempura appetizer (best part of my meal), fried avocado (good, but it came with a mayo based dipping sauce) and a cucumber roll. Luckily for me my friends were eating off the sushi boats, so I was able to decline the offer of cream cheese in my roll over the bar. Nevertheless, my roll was just ok, with no wasabi and no ginger. I'm not gonna lie though, I did snag some delicious pineapple off a boat the third time it floated by. read more

Beware. Went in evening of 12/10. I'm not much of a seafood person. Only item I grabbed off the boat was a California Roll, was slightly room temperate like it had been sitting out for a while. Did not seemed chill enough. Bad mistake on my part, I ate it anyway. From the dinner menu I ordered beef teriyaki. Says on the menu it is a NY steak. What was served to me was a barely warm piece of medium rare garbage. I became severely ill later that evening, vomiting all night long with diarrhea all into the next day. Today is day 3 and I am still not well. Worst restaurant experience of my life. I almost had to go to the hospital. read more

I may be the odd-ball out here, but I'm giving Yama Sushi only three stars. Don't get me wrong, it's a three-star A-OK. The floating sushi boats were fun and a very smart idea on the restaurant's part considering that it is very hard to limit yourself when delicious looking sushi are constantly floating by. Plates are priced at $2.50, $3.00, and $4.00, but pretty much all of the floating boats of sushi were $3.00-$4.00. The sushi was tasty but I didn't find it as anything special. Some of the plates tasted very similar, although there were a few that I can't name that were very delicious. However, I felt that the prices were steep since most of the plates were $4.00 and each plate had only 3 or at most 4 pieces of sushi. I did like how they had floating boats with other options. There were pot stickers, these delicious tempura-battered meatball-looking things, sashimi, salmon, sesame balls, deep-fried strawberries, cheesecake, some little pastry cakes, and more. I would recommend Yama Sushi for the floating boat experience, its relaxing atmosphere, and its variety. While the sushi is good, be sure not to arrive too hungry. I went there last night and I LOVED it! My finance doesn't like fish of any kind and normally puts up a HUGE fuss when I want to go to sushi, but he was so entertained by the little boats! Yama Sushi is a tricky place to go. The food is good, I'm mesmerized by the boats of sushi and things I cannot identify that float by. It's great to sit around and pick your own choices and watch your plates pile up. It's best for probably four people at most to have a conversation and even better if you can snag a corner so you can see each other, otherwise get a table so you can enjoy the food and conversation. Get there early for the freshest sushi, I sometimes wonder how often they let the food go round and round. If you can sit where the chefs' deposit their creations, even better. They are very accomodating if you want something fresh or fried. They do not offer liquor, so be satisfied with beer, wine or sake. I like this place and I go there often, but sometimes it is hit or miss with freshness. If it is late, I definitely sit at a table. If it's early, I go to the bar. If it's lunchtime, the bar is the place to be and it gets crowded quick. It's not the best sushi I have ever had, but it's definitely a solid choice in Redding. The service is good and they have an array of options that is sure to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. read more

there is something wrong with the energy in this place. I can't quite figure it out. Maybe its something with the front desk staff? Some of the sushi on boats was ok and some rather stale. its not a good concept. I noticed too that the menu book had prices quite different from SOME of the colored plate code pricing. I get the idea that a table seating will cost more than a stool by the boat'/water. I decided the right way to do this is to come there, sit at the circling boats near a sushi chef inside the circle and just watch him place things, or even ask him for something. I like that I can usually just walk in at sit at the sushi boat bar right away and start eating. Very reasonably priced as well. I can fill up and have a small bottle of saki for under $20. The sushi chefs in the center bar are awesome and gave great recommendations. Anytime I order a made-to-order item it comes out very timely. Love their stuffed "jalapeño poppers." Hmmmmm. It is a generous 2 stars. Sunday night, so can't say other, more busy nights, might be better, but sushi on the boats looked tired and worn out. Some with sliced scallion looked like it was on its 40th lap or so. The honey shrimp...I think it was honey shrimp... is a color not found naturally in nature. Best to wait for the boats to go around 5-6 times to select items that suddenly appear to be new on the water ride. New is best on the boats. Perhaps on a sushi curve in Redding this is a four star place, but it had lots of imitation mixes, tired veggies, strange sauces (that congealed in odd fashion), not so good "fresh" fish, and unidentifiable ingredients. The food is great if the server pay more attention to the tables besides flirt with all the male workers on the side. I really enjoy dinning here but there something about this place where the servers seems to pay more attention on the workers than the customers. It happen a couple of times when my boyfriend and I came in with the same server. She got us water and hurry to the back where she stop and talk to one of the chefs and didn't get us our drinks than she when to the side and starting talk to another work and took 20 mins to get our coke. One of the guys even told the other guy that's she had been sleeping around on him, whatever it is they should not bring it to work. However the food was great! read more

For Redding this is #3 sushi place. It's great because if your not trying to spend much money you can get little portions from the boats. Yes of course you have to use your best judgement if your going to get something from boats, because there not always going to be fresh (your an idiot if you can't figure that out on your own ). But I love seeing the boats because it's an awesome part of Asian culture . Their bigger portions are obviously made fresh and I love the fact that I can get a little bit of everything and not pay an arm and a leg.
