Poke

Staying downtown for work and had a hankoring for Ramen. Yamatani popped up under Japanese Restaurants and my assumption is that ramen would be on the menu, it is not. Go to Gojira for ramen - bit of a drive. However - once over the ramen craving I dug into the menu. Very typical Japanese dishes and sushi. All looked wonderful. I chose the poke as the description was "with five fish". For $20 I was hoping for more fish then rice and thought he bowl was smallish there was only fish in it. The taste was amazing - a light sauce to allow the fresh fish to come through. Accompanied by Edamame which was fine - just the right balance of doneness and salt. Over all a great experience, pretty crowded so get a reservation or expect a wait. I was alone so sat at the bar with a few locals there to get their regular. Enjoy!!

6/6/2025- Made the extra mile to make it here for dinner- Even staying in Mammoth- it's so worth the drive.. Roxanne always greets with enthusiasm and seats in our regular spot! Feeling like a nice broth I went with the beef sukiyaki- ( my very first dish here long ago). Hit the spot- not many authentic Japanese restaurants can be consistent.. so flavorful! We also got the Yamatani roll- decent- Combo of beef teriyaki and tempura always great! Until the fall trip-- looking forward!

Yamatani Boat Dinner and Chicken Wings

Sushi was not on my list of things to do in Bishop but ended up here after watching the Christmas parade and so glad we stopped in. The place was packed! We sat at the counter. Both our server and the sushi chef were helpful and friendly. We've been to lots of sushi restaurants but my goodness, their chicken wings were so delicious! And the boat was perfect for us, very tasty and fresh except for the shrimp sushi (sorry but that one was horrible). Great vibe, would totally come back here again.

Came here again to get some Japanese food. Food is usually pretty good but for some reason, my beef teriyaki was pretty chewy. The sashmi was delicious and service and ambiance always top notch. Think I'll get the chicken teriyaki next time.

The food is more a westernized take on Japanese food, but checked all the boxes for a good meal. The establishment seems to be Japanese owned with all the staff friendly and welcoming. I felt the restaurant was too clean for a Japanese restaurant, but that's not a bad thing.

Weak Inari!! It's usually great (especially with avocado) but the somehow messed this up!!! Rice was stale and terrible

Consistently average Japanese food. Came for 'oodles of nooodles (Tuesday and Wednesday). I got the sambal noodles per the waiter's recommendation and it was okay. It came with about 4oz of meat. Flavor was good but I needed protein after my meal. Appetizers were good. Gyoza and calamari were good and I'd recommend those. I wouldn't come here again - better spots in town

We stumbled upon this great eatery on our way to the Eastern Sierras. My husband is still raving about their tempura plate. The teriyaki steak is so tender and buttery. The teriyaki sauce adds a perfect sweetness to it. Riley, the friendly staff convinced us to have the fried cheesecake - he said, it's the taste one will never forget ! He was definitely right! We'll certain be back next time!

pretty solid japanese american food in the heart of bishop! we ordered takeout and it took around 20-25 minutes to be ready since the salmon collar takes longer. the chicken teriyaki was really good but there was actually a fly in the salad. not a huge issue or a reflection on the restaurant in my opinion since it was probably just an issue with the actual veggie kit. the salmon collar was delicious and we got the misoyaki style. the crunchy roll was okay but came with only 5 pieces so be aware of that. this is a decent food option in bishop. i definitely wanted to love it more, but i would say it's still worth supporting a small business.

Hamachi Kama

This is a great Japanese restaurant. So fresh and delicious sushi. I had the best hamachi Kama I've had Excellent service and ambience. See you here!

The vegetable rolls were pretty solid. Nothing amazing but nothing bad I liked it. The environment was interesting with all the star wars posters and stuff. I wouldn't go out of my way sorry but it's fine, didn't eat the fish so don't really know about that. The servers were nice and friendly

Tomago sushi and Eel cut roll

This afternoon at 6 PM, I passed by Bishop with my daughter and ordered takeout from Yamatani--a Tomato Sushi for $5 and an Eel Cut Roll for $14. When we opened them, this is what they looked like. The eel roll only had five pieces; I'm not sure if it's the same when dining in. However, they didn't look appetizing at all.

Shocked to see anyone describe the service as "top notch." This place is a hard pass. The food is sub-par, tastes inauthentic and the service was TERRIBLE. Has the ambience and feel of a diner and the service staff comes off as miserable and disinterested. The gum-snapping, disheveled busboy comes by to refill waters and you ask for more napkins. He mutters under his breath three times, as you persistently ask him "What are you saying?" "Yeah!" He finally answers intelligibly. Waiter himself...where did she get this guy? Walks up, first greeting: "Guys ready?" No intro, no suggestions, throws edamame appetizer on the table, followed immediately by wilted greens of a salad, then entrees - all at once. Our table is crowded with plates and bowls in ten minutes. He leaves all of that there the entire time until we leave. Family of four, for mediocre food....$125. Tosses the check in front of me. "Have a good one!" Talked to the manager/owner on the way out (some have mentioned her in reviews as being named "Roxanne"?) I said: "Your waiter there - he seems to be in quite a bit of a rush, huh?" "What do you mean?" she answers. "That guy." I pointed to him. "Mr. Turn 'em, and burn 'em, huh?" "Oh yeah," she laughs. "He's like that. Sorry." No, Miss. I'm sorry I ever made the mistake of bringing my family to your establishment. What a joke. Don't go to this sad excuse of a restaurant unless you enjoy being disrespected, and then ripped off by paying for cheap food. (Attached my own photo just to authenticate I was there.)

The best for everything. Even if you don't prefer sushi, there are SO many other options. Tempura, chicken kabobs, veggies and warm saki.

Not the best sushi I had. The order was prepared wrong. The sushi roll smelled fish. The place is poorly decorated.

Hey Roxanne - any chance I can get a list of ingredients (or even better, a recipe) for your poke?

Thank you for your inquiry. 6-9 types of fish, chopped & mixed with kizami nori, togarashi (Japanese chili powder), green onions & sesame seeds. Of course the sauce is the key; ponzu, chili oil, togarashi & green onions. That's all I can tell you!

I stopped by Gojira Ramen & Sushi in the Village for a meal recently, and while the location is…read moreunbeatable, the food was a bit of a mixed bag for me. It's a convenient spot for a quick bite, but there are a few areas where the execution fell short of the price point. I tried the Karaage Chicken Rice, and while the flavors had potential, the dish didn't quite hit the mark this time around. Meal Observations * The Chicken: The flavor of the karaage was decent, but the texture was quite dry. It lacked that signature juiciness you look for in Japanese fried chicken, making it feel a little over-prepared. * The Rice & Balance: Without much sauce or moisture to go around, the bowl felt a bit heavy and one-note. A bit more dressing or a fresher batch of rice would have gone a long way in balancing the dish. * Pricing: Being in the heart of the Village, you expect to pay a "resort premium," but for the quality of the chicken bowl, it felt a little steep. It's hard to justify the cost when the main component of the meal is underwhelming. The Upside * Convenience & Vibe: The restaurant has a great energy and the staff is efficient, which is perfect if you're looking to get in and out quickly between activities. * Service: The food came out fast and the team was friendly, making for a smooth overall visit even if the kitchen missed on this specific order.

Since I still had a craving for ramen after my Yamatani experience (they don't have ramen - though…read moreeverything else was perfect) I drove across town to squash the craving. Well worth the drive. Small ramen / poke / sushi restaurant with about 7 tables - seemed to be a lot of to go service. With the size, line going through the tables, fill your own water and bus your own table, there was enough disorganization it reminded me of a ramen bar in Japan. Japan is not disorganized, just as gaijin we have trouble processing their ultra-organized chaos. I went with the Gojiramen - spicy miso broth with pork. Miso broth was very well balanced with just the right amount of spice paste. All accompaniments went very well in the ramen with a nice amount of noodles and sprouts. Very well made bowl of ramen. My coworker had the Black Garlic and said it also had a nice flavor with a good amount of garlic. She also had the gyoza which looked as amazing as she said they tasted. Upset I didn't get offered one or order my own. Great stop if you're looking for a nice bowl of ramen on a cool winters night. Everything else looked amazing as well. What they give up in table service they definitely make up in flavor.

Shady! Check your receipt. Asks if I want ranch, no mention of charge. It shows up on my bill. Beer was also on menu for $7, but charged $8.
