They charge you per sauce. I think it's 75 cents. I was made aware of this because I asked for more ponzu. The ponzu is not as traditional as I'm used to but it was good. I ordered the yellow tail collar. Hamachi Kama. It was good. I would order this again. We ordered the spicy tuna roll. The powder they put on top is definitely spicy and delicious. 10/10 recommend and would order again. I got hamachi nigiri and would also order that again. I wouldn't be able to comment on the soft crab appetizer or the oyster shooters but this place is a decent stop for sushi in the area. The staff might have had an off night when we stopped by but we were a larger group with several different tabs so that might have been a little frustrating to deal with. read more

Staying downtown for work and had a hankoring for Ramen. Yamatani popped up under Japanese Restaurants and my assumption is that ramen would be on the menu, it is not. Go to Gojira for ramen - bit of a drive. However - once over the ramen craving I dug into the menu. Very typical Japanese dishes and sushi. All looked wonderful. I chose the poke as the description was "with five fish". For $20 I was hoping for more fish then rice and thought he bowl was smallish there was only fish in it. The taste was amazing - a light sauce to allow the fresh fish to come through. Accompanied by Edamame which was fine - just the right balance of doneness and salt. Over all a great experience, pretty crowded so get a reservation or expect a wait. I was alone so sat at the bar with a few locals there to get their regular. Enjoy!! read more

Sushi was not on my list of things to do in Bishop but ended up here after watching the Christmas parade and so glad we stopped in. The place was packed! We sat at the counter. Both our server and the sushi chef were helpful and friendly. We've been to lots of sushi restaurants but my goodness, their chicken wings were so delicious! And the boat was perfect for us, very tasty and fresh except for the shrimp sushi (sorry but that one was horrible). Great vibe, would totally come back here again. read more

Food was great, we have calamari, sushi, chicken teriyaki, a famous boat and a few more sushi I just don't remember the names, we have a party of 14 people and we noticed that the server took our order, but it look like he was forced to do it. I used to work and restaurants and know how important is the tip, but to be honest the server didn't really earn the tip, but since we have a big party tip was included, my bill was around $ 450. Including tips, $70 my family could easily tip the server with at least $ 100. But since we didn't like, how the server took care of us we didn't tip extra. Consistently average Japanese food. Came for 'oodles of nooodles (Tuesday and Wednesday). I got the sambal noodles per the waiter's recommendation and it was okay. It came with about 4oz of meat. We stumbled upon this great eatery on our way to the Eastern Sierras. My husband is still raving about their tempura plate. The teriyaki steak is so tender and buttery. The teriyaki sauce adds a perfect sweetness to it. Riley, the friendly staff convinced us to have the fried cheesecake - he said, it's the taste one will never forget ! He was definitely right! pretty solid japanese american food in the heart of bishop! we ordered takeout and it took around 20-25 minutes to be ready since the salmon collar takes longer. the chicken teriyaki was really good but there was actually a fly in the salad. not a huge issue or a reflection on the restaurant in my opinion since it was probably just an issue with the actual veggie kit. the salmon collar was delicious and we got the misoyaki style. the crunchy roll was okay but came with only 5 pieces so be aware of that. this is a decent food option in bishop. i definitely wanted to love it more, but i would say it's still worth supporting a small business. read more

We ordered the chicken katsu, saba shioyaki, sushi boat, and fried shishito peppers. The taste rivals the quality of a typical Japanese restaurant in metropolitan California, which is quite impressive for a town this size. The entrees were on the more expensive side but I was pleasantly surprised to see that they contained roughly double the protein of a normal bento box (e.g. two cutlets, a saba fillet that was much larger than usual), so they ended up being very good value for money. The sushi was a normal portion and was definitely the most expensive item. Note that they charge a 10% service fee even on takeout orders. read more

Shocked to see anyone describe the service as "top notch." This place is a hard pass. The food is sub-par, tastes inauthentic and the service was TERRIBLE. Has the ambience and feel of a diner and the service staff comes off as miserable and disinterested. The gum-snapping, disheveled busboy comes by to refill waters and you ask for more napkins. He mutters under his breath three times, as you persistently ask him "What are you saying?" "Yeah!" He finally answers intelligibly. Waiter himself...where did she get this guy? Walks up, first greeting: "Guys ready?" No intro, no suggestions, throws edamame appetizer on the table, followed immediately by wilted greens of a salad, then entrees - all at once. Our table is crowded with plates and bowls in ten minutes. He leaves all of that there the entire time until we leave. Family of four, for mediocre food....$125. Tosses the check in front of me. "Have a good one!" Talked to the manager/owner on the way out (some have mentioned her in reviews as being named "Roxanne"?) I said: "Your waiter there - he seems to be in quite a bit of a rush, huh?" "What do you mean?" she answers. "That guy." I pointed to him. "Mr. Turn 'em, and burn 'em, huh?" "Oh yeah," she laughs. "He's like that. Sorry." No, Miss. I'm sorry I ever made the mistake of bringing my family to your establishment. What a joke. Lower your expectations if you're into sushi. First, the staff was great, atmosphere was ok, nothing special. The menu had a decent variety of offerings but it just didn't come together well. For appetizers we had the baked mussels . Not much flavor and difficult to eat. The muscles were finely chopped and really didn't hold together well with chopsticks. For rolls we tried a couple but the rice was loose and again, difficult to eat without the roll falling apart. Desert was ok, fried cheesecake, more like a tortilla with cheesecake filling rolled in cinnamon, not what we expected. I know this sounds picky/harsh. Honestly I feel like it's pretty fair. We were surprised to come across this restaurant here in Bishop when we came for a trip! We came during Thanksgiving weekend, and there was an hour long wait at ~5:30 PM. The restaurant has a variety of rolls, bentos, and combination dinners. I wanted to try one of the avocado-uni rolls and I also got their kid-size chicken teriyaki set. The portion sizes were good. The kid-size looked pretty comparable to the regular size. The food itself was okay -- it seems like the restaurant likes to put the same kind of sauce on the teriyaki sets and the rolls. I think I like the rolls a bit better than the chicken teriyaki set. read more

I cannot believe the neg reviews, they don't sound true in the least to me. I've been a loyal customer for years, and I will state that the Yamatani family bends over backwards with good service and great food. I am Japanese American, from Southern California, and I always leave thinking, damn, wish we had Yamatani's down south. Why? Because so many Japanese family restaurants are gone now, with fusion places left in their place. Yamatani's is like a throwback to when I was a boy. I am very surprised Yamatani doesn't have all 5 star reviews. This place is truly a gem. My family is from Japan and they are very picky about Japanese food, but Yamatani exceeded our expectations. Everything was delicious and the fish was very fresh. Reasonably priced too. It's owned and run by a Japanese couple so you know it is legit. The servers are all really nice too! I see some of the comments are referencing slower service, but the restaurant was really busy the entire time we were there so that is why the servers weren't super fast. Came here since it was across from my hotel. Service was quick since I sat at the sushi bar. Ordered the tuna sushi and was surprised how big it was. 5 stars there. Ordered a rainbow roll and as far as rainbow rolls go, it wasn't bad. I've had better. Ordered their noodle plate since I was still hungry and what a let down. Colors were amazing, chicken was dry and rough. The flavor was so bland. I was so disappointed. There's nothing on the menu that screams out "order me" the rolls are basic with zero imagination. Spicy tuna roll this, California roll that. No lemon salmon rolls or dragons rolls and those are just standard at most sushi spots. Go here and try it for yourself.
