I have been going to this restaurant for over 10 years. It is still owned by the same couple. I have met their entire family since each one of them have worked there at one time or another. There has been a lot of changes in the shopping center over the years with different stores and restaurants coming and going but they managed to stay in business. It's probably because they have a lot of loyal customers. The restaurant is basically a fast food type Japanese restaurant where you order your food at the counter and then sit down. They do have a sushi bar where sushi chefs prepare your sushi upon request if that's more to your liking. This a great restaurant to visit for lunch if you work nearby. I've been here about a dozen times over the past few years and it took a little while to find my preferred dishes. They have a nice selection with a good variety that can satisfy any pallet especially a picky one like mine. Mount Sierra and the Canadian are my two absolute favorites and I will come back here again and again. The service is nice and it's very clean and tidy. Came here on a weeknight and the place wasn't crowded at all. Sat with a friend at the sushi counter and ordered various sushi items. I personally don't eat seafood sushi, so I ordered a Vegetarian Roll and a Chicken Teriyaki Roll. The Chicken Teriyaki Roll isn't on the menu. I had explained to the sushi chef how I didn't want to eat any seafood and he was kind enough to make this one up for me. My friend ordered various hand and regular rolls, all containing seafood, including a Spider Roll and a Heart Attack Roll. Then we ended our meal with some Green Tea Ice Cream. I can say that I've eaten at quite a few sushi places, always ordering veggie type rolls and Yanagi Sushi was nothing special. They tasted okay but I didn't find anything worth coming back for. I was even unimpressed with their Green Tea Ice Cream. I've had better from the grocery store. My friend however seemed to really enjoy his rolls, He even enjoyed chatting it up with the sushi chef. A very tiny sushi restaurant with only a handful of tables and a bar. They also serve hot food combinations plates that we didn't try. We only ordered sushi, and had the Uni, Oh Baby roll, New Horizon roll, King Spider roll, and Mango roll. My favorite would be the Oh Baby roll. It's a roll with no rice but a combination of lobster and salmon wrapped in tuna. Yummy. This was also my first time trying Uni (Sea Urchin). It was very fishy and you definitely have to have an acquired taste to enjoy it. Service seemed a bit slow when we were there for lunch. There was only a sushi chef and a lady who ran the front. She seemed to be attentive at the beginning when she took our order, but towards the end we had to signal her to get her attention. read more

We ended up at Yanagi on a Tuesday night around 8:30pm after work and haven't had sushi in about a month and a half (excluding the Ralphs sushi I grab once in a while), but I wanted really good sushi, something that Yelpers spoke highly about. I checked my map and saw that I had bookmarked Yanagi a while back as a place to try with so many reviews and so many 5 star reviews so I thought this would be the best time to try someplace new. The service here is awesome. The young lady that helped us was very attentive (even though we were the only patrons in that night), she was friendly and gave some of her favorite suggestions and brought us the check in yelp miso soups :D This was starting off to be a great dinner, we ordered the suggested yellowtail carpaccio, salmon sushi w/truffle oil, oyster shooter, regular salmon sushi, amberjack (wanted Aji but they were out), sushi burrito, blue fin tuna and a spicy tuna charred roll (over all about $90). Now for some notes.... the order the sushi came out wasn't very conducive to what we ordered, kind of what was in order on the paper was what I ate, starting with the yellow tail carpaccio which had jalapeno, cilantro, red onions, and a grainy cilantro verde sauce... needless to say that demolished my tastebuds leading to the rest and it looked like a lazy version of what Kris Soo ate earlier this year, and it took a healthy helping of ginger and green tea to balance it all out. By then the salmons came, and the oyster shooter. So I figured eat the salmon and save the shooter for later. So tried the salmon with truffle oil, and it was just that... salmon seared with truffle oil... wasn't much to wow because the oil coated my mouth so all I could taste was cold oil. After the truffle oil salmon I finished my green tea to get the coating out of my mouth. The next dish that came was the sushi burrito which was wrapped in soy paper filled with artificial crab, salmon and tuna... not bad, but for $9 didn't get close to satisfying me. The last plate to arrive was the amberjack and blue fin tuna... the blue fin was nice that it had fresh wasabi on top, but there was a piece of sinue in one of the pieces which made it a little chewy, but the 2nd piece was better. The amberjack had a green sauce on top with salt... a lot of salt. So much that it wasn't enjoyable for me to eat. The spicy tuna roll had chili oil on it with chili flakes which made it too spicy for my wife, but I liked the heat, but it was just a hot roll... it nulled out the tuna. Overall, Yanagi lacks balance. The dishes sound good (standard sushi rolls mixed with a little Korean flair). The carpaccio was a let down... no finess in the onion cuts (and there was a lot of them) and the sauce was so grainy... like they didn't wash the cilantro before they blended it to make the sauce... I think it didn't add anything to the dish. Overall I've had better, but I wanted to order an array of things to get the best idea of what they had to offer. Plus side, wait staff - very attentive; clean restaurant, and ample parking. I'll probably give them some time before I try again, or if they have a different chef on certain days I'll try sitting at the bar to see how he preps his dishes. read more

Just an absolute great experience from beginning to end. Chef Ben is amazing! We ordered the lemon roll, (which was out of this world) the tuna sampler, that included Chutoro (crazy!!) and the Chef Ben's special which was mindblowing! We tried this place on a Tuesday night and the place was empty, just the server, the chef, and an older lady, who seemed to maybe be the owner or manager as she was doing paperwork at a table in the back. Overall the service was excellent, the server was so polite and attentive, she knew the menu and offered suggestions to replace an item they did not have that day, but the food was not great. The food wasn't bad. It just wasn't balanced- meaning it was either way too spicy, or way too salty, or just bland. One roll was mushy- no texture. The restaurant is in a good location, there was a lot of parking on a Tuesday evening, if the food was more balanced they would be doing great. What we ordered: Free miso when you check in - good, no seaweed, which is actually how I prefer it. Hamachi carpaccio- only kind of resembled the photos/description and had zero flavor. There were raw jalapeños and raw red onions on the dish but even eating them separately there was no flavor to them- it was weird. The dish was covered in a green sauce, which too was also flavorless. Salmon sushi - good, standard, light on wasabi Oyster shooter- large shooter, didn't try but husband said was ok In-n-out roll- spicy tuna roll with cucumber and seared tuna on top was the description, it came out covered in chili sauce (like the kind in a bottle) so it was super spicy and the texture was mush- cucumbers were very few and not crunchy. Service was that good and parking that easy that I might come back for their hot dishes. read more

Amazing! I haven't tried their sushi yet but i had two rolls tonight and they were both amazing. When I first opened it, I thought they were kind of small but the taste makes up for the small rolls. The taste is perfectly balanced. Not too sweet, not too spicy, not too salty. Just an all around great taste. I did find a piece of plastic in the finger but it happens. Will definitely order food from here again! Updated on 8/08/20 I understand mistakes happen but as a restaurant... shouldn't cleanliness making sure that hair does not end up in a customer's food something that they should keep an eye out for? It was a long piece of hair too... like as someone who's making someone's food and you have long hair, at least have the decency to wear a hairnet or something. Completely disgusted. I love Yanagi Sushi and the owners are some of the hardest working people I've ever met. I'm a regular and Kris and her mom and aunt are always happy to see me. Although there are other sushi restaurants that may be as good and certainly there are some with their gimmicks, sing-alongs and other distractions that make it difficult to have a dinner conversation, I am never disappointed with Yanagi. Found this closeby place on Yelp. Was looking for quick good sushi. Overall not bad. All the sushi posted in pics were tasty. Each roll is on the small side. Would have been nice to have ice waters on the table without us asking. The complimentary miso soup upon checking in on Yelp was a nice touch. I've ordered from here before and it was very good but then the last time I ordered here they forgot my $18 albacore sashimi and I live about 30 mins away so I didn't feel like driving back there for it. From now on I will make sure to check the box before I leave the parking lot. Not sure how you could forget that so it was pretty disappointing. But the rest of it was good. I'm constantly looking for new sushi places in the valley and I can't believe I've missed out on this one for so long. You can tell just by their menu roll selection that it's going to be good. I got the bluefin tuna hand roll because everyone on yelp's raving about it... I wasn't disappointed,reeeally good. Also got salmon sushi and it's a little pricier than other places in the area but definitely worth it.
