Yasubay's - This is water eel - Japanese Near Me - Oxnard, California

If you are ever in South Oxnard and you are trying to get to the North side via Saviers road, there is no reason to miss this restaurant. For the most part you will be at 5 point traffic for a good 20 minutes. Yasubay is about a block away from this intersection. I always noticed the restaurant while i was on the road and always thought about grabbing something to eat. I went with my brother to get some sushi. The restaurant, when we went was not packed but it was active. Even though it looks a little sketchy from the front, the inside is really comfortable, the decoration is very minimalistic, there is a soft field to the walls, and one or two paintings that blend to the restaurant. It is that and then the wooden tables. the decorations work for the restaurant. Ok the food I ordered a spider roll, and a dragon roll, my brother ordered a Yasubay roll and I've had a sunset roll before. Each roll comes with a free salad and a free miso soup. That's a huge plus because I hate it when sushi bars do not give it for free or you have to order it. The soup was good, however I was disappointed because it did not have tofu in it. But other than that it tasted good, being it was a cold afternoon. The spider roll and the dragon roll were really good, I'm a fan of soft shelve crab and eel, so I was really happy. The spider roll especially, it had that good crunch that I love to feel in my sushi roll. The dragon roll as well full of flavor, the eel was good the the sushi was good. The Yasubay and sunset roll were more disappointing, they did not have as much flavor as the other ones, but still they were good. There's a wide variety of sushi that you can choose, so I guess they have options if you like the more bland taste or the more flavorful taste. Anyways I will give it 4 stars because I actually see myself coming here over and over when ever I'm craving some sushi that it's near by. I can't say it's the best sushi because I can deff. say that I've had better. But again I totally see myself coming here. Let me say something about this small shopping center though. This is probably the most eclectic strip mall per square foot in all of Ventura County. The tiny strip mall shows the diversity that SoCal is all about. There are about ten small stores, and here you find Yasubay a Japanese restaurant, a Vietnamese noodle shop, a Mexican restaurant, and a Bakery. A hidden Gem in Oxnard for a fact. People have this image of Oxnard, but once you lift the layer and see what Oxnd is about, you discover gems like this one. Strip malls like these are more often seen in Urban centers like Los Angeles or SF, but in Ventura and Santa Barbara County, I must say that I love the south west corner of Saviers and Wolff Street! read more

Sometimes when it comes to sushi, I don't want to spend over a $100 for my husband and I. But I also don't want to buy the sushi that comes prepackaged at the grocery store either. That's why we come to Yasubay's. Very inexpensive, very fresh, and very good. Here's the lowdown... Service: Great service. Alex that runs the front of house is very joy full and accommodating. She's fun to talk to, that's why we always sit at the bar. Food: All the roles here I've had were good, and the price made them even better. Most rolls are between $6-$10. My favorite is the spicy albacore roll. Their spicy ramen, is really spicy in that so fresh way. They use fresh jalapenos in it, and I believe it's in the broth too. It was great. The best ramen I've had. The japanese curry is great as well. Tastes just like homemade. I've lived in Oxnard my whole life, and drove by this place countless times, I'm glad that my husband and I finally decided to try Yasubay's. It's a true gem, especially for South Oxnard. This place was once one of the few places you could get sushi, the bar had 3 stools but that was 1979 and few Americans ate sushi then. They also had a real tatami room where you could dine with your friends while sitting on the floor and man oh man was the food good! Honest authentic Japanese food served by attentive waitresses. Yasubay's is a pretty cool sushi bar. The best (or worst) part is that they have huge pictures of the rolls and food on the wall! The pictures look so do delicious, that's it's hard not to order everything. The rolls we tried were the Hawaii Roll, Spicy Tuna, Volcano Roll, Mexican Roll. To sum it up quickly.... Hawaii Roll: good, Spicy Tuna: good, Volcano Roll: weird (it's baked) and Mexican Roll: ok (pickled jalapenos, not fresh). Overall, it's a nice restaurant, open during the afternoon. Being open during the afternoon seems to be a rarity in the Oxnard Sushi restaurants, so for that I like them. Why 4 stars?: It was just ok. It didn't knock my socks off or anything. The people up at the counter are super friendly though and that's nice. Water is kept full, miso soup is good... I think they are deserving of 4 stars. Whenever we leave Best Western, across the terrain is this restaurant. I was craving a Bento box and some warm Miso soup. Introducing...(drum roll)...Yasubay. The sushi tasted good. The sushi chef was Japanese...or asian, and the entree food was being made by a couple Hispanic ladies. Before I go on, their ingredients made Japanese food seem not like Japanese food. The tempura was prepared not so bread-y, and there was as much teriyaki on the chicken, which made it easier to eat. The staff is very friendly, they assisted us with all of our needs, and the price was $ out of $$$$. The Bento box had salad, tempura, miso soup, 6 california rolls, rice, and your choice of meat for $7.95. Awesome, but why only 3-stars...I don't know. read more

I adore this place! As you walk in you see an oriental wooden structured restaurant that is optimal for day-time/lunch time eat-out. They also have updated newspaper from VC Reporter from what I remember if you plan on reading during your lunch period. I usually get the same thing, Japanese bento boxes (lunch boxes) with the choice of any one-type of meat (teriyaki beef, chicken, fish, etc.) with tempura shrimp, small sushi roll, wasabi/freshly cut ginger, and a side of miso soup, The only downside is I can't substitute Orange Chicken as my main meat entree for the Bento boxes (which I don't understand since Orange Chicken is cheaper on the menu than the other meat on their menu.) I used to go to this place in the 70s with my family. It has since changed hands several times and been through a few remodels. Menu is quite different and it does not have the family and welcoming feel it used to have when it was run by original owners. When we used to go there the sushi chefs would always welcome us in Japanese. They used to serve great sukiyaki, which they don't have on the current menu. I had the yakisoba, which did not really have the seasoning of true yakisoba and was lacking flavor. The chicken was not tender either and was all dark meat.... maybe not fresh. I ordered a spicy tuna roll, which was mediocre at best. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. My mother ordered the grilled salmon, which she enjoyed. read more

Disappointed when I ordered the sashimi salad expecting to get plenty of assorted fish on top. Come to find out, I got couple pieces of tuna, salmon and white fish but the chef had cut them up into tiny tiny pieces and layered it on top of the salad. Compared to the other sushi restaurants in the area, I always find myself coming back to Yasubay's. Family owned, great staff, clean restaurant every time I walk in here, and a comfy atmosphere! Quality of food is great, personally love the house special noodle, but there is still plenty of other food to enjoy as well. I ordered a caterpillar roll, eel was rubbery and overkilled with sauce my mom ordered a salad with what seemed like a mayo dressing yuk she couldn't take more than two bites might have gone back if desperate for sushi but I'm Not going back their the very unpleasant waitress killed this for me.
