So we gave it a try and this time we came a little more of what to expect. We ordered as much as we could off the HH menu as we knew there probably wouldn't be checking with us again before HH was over. Also, we skipped the Ramen and the omelette. It was much more successful! We tried the pork belly, delicious! Salty and a little chewy. The gyoza was my favorite, tender and delicate. The two pieces are actually really long so it's more like 4. The flank steak was a little less tender this time but the karage chicken was still great, crispy and hot. Also a highlight was the mushroom skewers, king mushroom with a slight sly soy sauce. My family enjoyed various hand rolls. In the end, my sister ordered a vegetable udon and she really liked it. This cost $14. The only meat in this "ramen" was less than half the size of the palm of my hand. I paid $14 for a very salty broth, some regular noodles that I could buy at the store, and a tiny piece of meat. A rare snow day had overtook Portland, stranding citizens, causing chaos and disruptions in local markets and gas stations. I am suppose to be staying at home and just "wait" it out. After following multiple foodie related channels on YouTube, I had to spring and get out. I went back to @yataimuramaru to get some Happy Hour! I was happy that the restaurant didn't follow suit like others around and had remained open for business. I ordered the Curry with Japanese Katsu and Grilled Squid Legs. The chicken katsu was delicious. A filet of white meat chicken, tender and breaded to perfection where crispy but not overly breaded followed by a fragrant house made Japanese style curry served with rice and topped with pickle vegetable. The squid leg was lightly grilled, followed with a Smokey flavor retaining its simple sweetness and being tender where easy to chew and swallow. Went here with a couple friends for my boyfriend's bday and we were not disappointed. Some of the best sushi and ramen I've had in a while. It was also snowing out so super cozy inside. We got the Tokyo ramen and a few of their specialty rolls, loved that the rolls were not weighed down with mayo. They were all light and fresh. I'll definitely be back soon. read more

Maru is a powerhouse. This place has been a reliable sushi and izakaya joint from my early days of happy hours. I came more often when I lived nearby, but the food today was just as good as I remember it. We had the bo gyoza, chicken karaage, aburi ramen, and a few different hand rolls (Natto, negi albacore, negihama, spicy scallop, and crunchy salmon). The rice could be a little better, maybe with just a tad more vinegar or using a slightly shorter grain, but overall compared to other places, they do a decent job. The fish was fresh and the hot food was tasty. Happy hour is a great time to come and try different things! Looked promising and decor makes you think you're in Japan. Food was ok. Spicy tuna hand roll was bland. They just added sriracha and spicy mayo. The tuna wasn't marinated in any spices. We also got the Tokyo ramen and the dipping ramen. Tokyo ramen was average. Dipping ramen was good. The noodles in both ramens were overcooked. The service was very very very slow. It was a full restaurant and we waited for about 20 min to be seated which is totally cool and normal. When we sat down it took about 10 min before the server came to our table. We ordered everything. 30 min later we still didn't have ramen. The server never came back to see if we wanted any more drinks. The table next to us got there wayyy after us and got their ramens before us. It seemed like there was a ramen bowl being made every 5-10 min? Shouldn't the broth already be done? I come here very often whenever I have sushi withdrawal. I took my father here last week for dinner. The experience was very disappointing. We came in a group of three. We sat and waited patiently while we saw many other people got their table coming after us. I can't help but wonder why. The host said those were couples, they have seats for couples. After waited for 25 minutes, we finally got seated. No worries, we understand couples got their priority. We ordered 3 things on the menu. The sashimi special, Udon, and grilled beef over rice (forgot the name on the menu). After another 25 minutes waited, we got our sashimi and udon noodle. We finished our sushimi and udon. The grilled beef is nowhere nearly done. I asked the waiter to check on our food, instead of telling the truth, he lied through his teeth as he said the food is cooking. I saw him input the order on the computer and ran into the kitchen to expedite the cooking. How did I find out? Because I also ordered a miso soup. The miso soup came out right after he put my order in. I used to like Maru until there are so many monkeys running around looking busy. Yataimura Maru is just like Shigezo, but without the crowds. Seriously, I went there with a friend on a Monday afternoon and we had a lovely, quiet dinner at 6pm (which is kind of impossible to do at Shigezo). We had the takoyaki as an appetizer and we were just wowed by how delicious it was. The octopus balls were golden and slightly crunchy on the outside, and lightly drizzled with Japanese (maybe?) mayo and takoyaki sauce - just enough, and not too much (which can be overpowering in my opinion). The bonito flakes on top of it were dancing gently in the heat of just-grilled takoyaki. Sublime. We then had great bowls of ramen (my favorite is miso ramen with extra kimchi and a hard boiled egg). Very generous portions, tasty broth, firm noodles, toppings that you can customize. Seriously, what's not to like? My friend, who came from Okinawa, said that this ramen was better than the ramen she could find back home, and she was also delighted with the takoyaki, so her vote of confidence counts a lot for me. read more

For Portland, the ramen is ok. For me, meh. I got the miso tantanmen ramen which comes with ground pork, bean sprouts, and green onions. First, the broth. The broth here is much more flavorful than the broth at Boxer Ramen. Buuuut, there was this weird distinct taste after each slurp that I didn't like. You could actually taste the paste that they used to make the broth. But, I ignored it cus I was happy I could find a decent tasting broth. Second, the noodles. There were barely any noodles. Where are my ramen noodles?! Basically, my bowl was 1/4 ramen and the other 3/4 was BEAN SPROUTS. Filled with bean sprouts! It's liked I ordered a miso tantanmen bean sprout soup :( Not cool Lastly, I ordered one roll because I was craving sushi. I was going to order a simple tekka maki (tuna roll) but I saw that it was the same price as a more elaborate roll, so I got the fatty maki roll. Ok, it is definitely fat but not filled with fish. The whole thing was 90% rice with THE SMALLEST piece of fish I've ever seen in a roll. I don't think my picture does it justice because it looks so much smaller in person. So, I basically paid $10 for a 5 piece roll of rice with a bit of fish inside. Only giving this 3 stars because the broth was better than I had expected. I can admit that sometimes I can fall into "lard" status where I order a lot of bad food and let myself indulge. It's especially fantastic when the food is good. My girlfriend and I love fried chicken and we (I) wanted karrage. We love Pono and thought we'd try somewhere new. We came in with 20 minutes left of happy hour and got seated pretty quickly. I liked the interior, I thought it was super kitschy. Our server was pretty friendly and knowledgable. We ordered 3 types of fried chicken. Yes, three. They were all bad. The spicy fried chicken was so overdone and dry that we sent it back (at least it was comped). The karrage was okay at best and the sauced karrage was over salted. We also got the braised pork, too salty. The ramen Sapporo ramen was okay, nothing to write home about and the beef donburi which was also too salty in my opinion. I arrived right at 4 pm to get my grub on. The minute I sat down I inquired about everything on the menu. What's this? What's that? Can I add this? Take out that? Bless my waiter's soul for putting up with me. The happy hour menu is huge. Lots of tasty choices to choose from. I ordered the tokyo ramen, chicken karage, salmon avocado handroll, spicy scallop roll and a spicy salmon roll. Seriously I don't know how to stop myself sometimes. That chicken karage with the salad underneath WHOOOOAAAAAA. Blew me away. I had a side of spicy mayo with it too, a habit I picked up from my roommate. Hands down better than Shigezo's. The ramen on the other hand was ok. Very lackluster. Love that they added a soft egg in there for me though. Next time I'm going at 5 pm so I can also order from the dinner menu and get the ramen I like. Spicy rolls were amazing. All in all a meal I'd happily do over again. My waiter was awesome. Checked on me regularly and quite knowledgeable. I drew him a cute little smiley face on my check to let him know I appreciate his upstanding service. OH! The bathroom! Love it! Warm toilet seat yay! Happy hour at 9p? Sign me up! Dining for one today and I'm ok with that! There were too many decisions to be had, so the idea of having a smaller version of everything I wanted was fantastic!! Ok let's see, I had the Tokyo ramen without meat, squid legs and omakase nigiri. All were so good. I cannot even begin to think about which was better. The nigiri had salmon, tuna, hamachi, something else and some uni (sea urchin) and all were drools. I love it when you have slightly warm rice and really fresh fish on top and have only like 90 seconds to eat it. No time for silly sides like soy sauce. The ramen was delightful. It was a smaller version of the normal size (thank goodness! I like tasting more things than eating a big big something!) and the veg broth was light and perfect. Noodles were good and the it just tasted right. And felt so good and warm after being in the cold, wet rain earlier. The squid legs were so good too! Some were a bit chewy and others were crispy, but overall good. A tad on the salty side, but can't complain bc the sauce that came with it kind of mellowed it out. I'm not normally one to run home and post pics and leave a review, but this was an exceptional dining experience. I have to admit that I am a bit of a crazed freak when it comes to Japanese cooking. I frickin love it! If I went to Japan I would come home a sumo wrestler. The flavors of Japanese cooking simply amazes me. We got here at 4:45pm and hit the happy hour menu hard until 6. The HH menu is exceptional and the prices are great. When the staff brought over the main dinner menu I had to dig deep cause I was feeling full. There were 2 specials that stood out that I had to have. The miso beef tongue was exceptional. It arrived and looked dry but as I went for the tongue with my chop stix it fell apart. So tender, great beefy flavor with a hint of sweetness. The salmon belly is a must if they have it. Very fresh tasting and full of those Omegas that we all need. This place is great. It was a holiday, so when we tried to hit Pok Pok, we realized it was closed. Instead we tried to find somewhere nearby and this place had a decent Yelp rating. When we walked in, the initial feel was great based on the decor. The amount of time we stood in the doorway waiting for someone to seat us was the first sign we should have walked out. Although friendly, the staff was ridiculously slow with every step from seating to processing the check. They were fairly busy, but had plenty of waitstaff on hand, but seemed to be very confused as nobody knew who was actually covering our table. Different people would come by (although rarely) and not really do anything. As for the food itself, very disappointing. The ramen was ok, really nothing memorable and not anything I'd ever order again. The main disappointment with the food was the Tonkatsu curry. You would think when ordering a $11 dinner plate that it would be enough to feed you, but it was actually an appetizer portion. I'm pretty tired of ramen that amps up SALT and FAT to make up for flavor. So Maru's subtly and richness is a really refreshing. The noodles are thinner than I'm used to, but I've come to appreciate their crispness. My go-to is the Tokyo ramen - it's a clear broth with a mild sweetness and I enjoy the crunch of the woodear mushrooms. The Chicken Paitan ramen is incredibly rich with plenty of chicken and miso flavor - will be great when it gets cold. The Shio Abu is really tasty, but not uber spicy if that's your thing. I've seen some of the reviews here complain about the happy hour ramen portion. Guys, it's 5 bucks. How much do you seriously expect to get for $5 bucks? Oh, waah, it's only a half-sized portion? Order another bowl. Try 2 different flavors. Get more/tastier ramen for less than you pay for that godawful stuff at Biwa. Win at life. The other advantage of the smaller portion is that I can also order skewers without breaking the bank or feeling like a fattie. I almost always drop $20-30 when I come here. For that I get ramen, 2 plates from the grill (my fave are the squid legs and okra), nigiri sushi, and an adult beverage (great sake selection). That's a feast! Enough said. If you're a fan of any of the cooking reality shows, you know that whatever is served at the end of the meal can be the 'make-or-break' item for a chef. If that were the case with this joint, the super special toilet seat was a definite way to leave on a high note. But I digress... the service was fabulous, the happy hour menu items plentiful, the food was beyond tasty, and the total bill was quite affordable. All the things that are high on my list of pluses. A few items were exactly as I expected (the spicy tuna roll) but there were some that were way better than anticipated (the burdock root and okra skewers for sure). But the best bite all afternoon was the bacon wrapped quail eggs. Next time we're getting two orders! Both my dining companion and I stumbled into the awesome bathroom adventure unexpectedly and walked out shaking our heads in amazement and talking about how we go about finding one of the magical toilet seats. Words to the wise, make a decision of which 'washing' option you wish to use BEFORE you sit down. My neck was sore for two days from straining to look at all the bottoms from a sitting position. This place made it on the top rated shops across the US and as an out of towner, I had to check it out to verify. We came on a Thursday for lunch around 1pm, not very crowded at all which can be a good thing especially when it's freezing outside. We ordered chicken karaage, shio butter corn ramen and Tokyo ramen. The chicken karaage was pretty tasty. It was tender and seasoned well with a hint of vinegar. I like that it's presented on top of salad greens since it balances out (somewhat) the fried goodness with something healthy. I ordered the shio butter corn ramen (chicken broth) but without the butter corn. Perhaps that explains the broth being average. I ended up finding a piece of hair in my soup (it happens) and the server was very nice and they made me a new one. I didn't make a big deal out of it. The pork was a bit overcooked but it wasn't hard chewing into it as I imagined. The Kimchi as a topping was delicious. For it being a $1, I wish they gave more. Overall the chicken broth ramen was ok. The Tokyo ramen's broth was a lot more rich and flavorful than the shio. It unfortunately doesn't come with an egg so you'll have to order that an additional topping. It was your typical original ramen. The hot tea was free, service was decent, the ladies bathroom even has a bidet and a tv inside. In conclusion, I'm not sure how they made it on the top ramen shops list but perhaps I'm missing out on the dinner menu. Anyways as my friend mentioned, this place is overrated. read more

Okay, I'll preface this by saying that I've tried ALOT of the places in town that serve ramen (I've been on a ramen quest you could say) looking to recreate the same tastes I grew fond of in Tokyo. While this place isn't really the same, it's by far the best ramen in town. The Tokyo Ramen is my favorite! The balance of flavors is delicate, the noodles are made fresh and are just perfect, and the tofu (if you like that sort of thing like me) is spot on as well. We also had a few rolls this time. We also got some warm sake, and this distilled japanese alcohol called shomen? They have four huge jars at the bar with fruit inside of it. We sampled all four flavors and settled on the plum. We ordered two appetizers and two different ramens. Both appetizers were over fried and almost impossible to eat, very hard on the outside, but still cold on the inside. When we talked to two different waitstaff about our uneaten food, they didn't try to make it right in any way. We at most only ate a few bites of the food and they didn't offer to make us something new or reduce the price. Our meal was almost $90 with tip and we left more hungry than we came in. An hour at Yataimura Maru's happy hour is still not enough to try all the varieties of food offered on their HH menu. Not to mention, HH is 2x a day - lasting essentially all day on Sundays, from 11:30am to 6pm. Whether you're craving ramen, or hand rolls, or robata grilled foods and skewers, you'll be able to keep both your wallet and stomach full at Maru's. One thing to note: if you're looking to try something on their full menu, don't come between 2-5pm on Sundays - you'll only be able to select from their HH menu then. We originally came here to try some of their ramen, but not all of the ramen bowls are listed on the HH menu. Although the ramen is half the normal price, you also get about half the normal size; and unfortunately, the taste didn't blow me away. I ordered the shio abu ramen, which seems more like a fusion of Chinese/Thai noodle dishes - sweet, spicy, and pan-fried. However, I would definitely recommend ordering from the grill. The super tender pork belly skewer hit the perfect balance of fatty to lean ratio. The bacon wrapped quail eggs taste exactly like how they sound; so if you like bacon and soft-boiled eggs, you'll love this dish! And of course, HH wouldn't be complete without drinks. I looooved the jelly sake here. As I expected, it wasn't that strong, but the thrill of drinking a liquid that tastes like jelly was pretty nifty; and the carbonation makes it go down like soda rather than a slow burn from alcohol. I've been to Yataimura Maru a few times. Their location of the restaurant is quite nice since it's further down on Division. Because of this you avoid the busy areas of Division such as the areas near Salt and Straw, Pok Pok, Whiskey Soda Lounge, etc. this restaurant serves cutting edge Japanese pub food with a blend of modern and traditional Japanese dishes. Their menu features handmade ramen noodles, sushi and yakimono (grilled) skewers. This restaurant is also good if you have a large party since they encourage their small plates/entrees to be shared among the group. When ordering, don't except your food to come out in a way where you get your appetizer, small plate than entree. This is their way of serving food, which is bringing out the food whenever it is done cooking. I went here for lunch, which is the perfect time to go because during dinner it is quite busy. I ordered a fried gyoza which are chicken dumplings with cabbage, green onions, garlic. I ordered something from the dinner menu instead of the lunch menu, which was teriyaki chicken. It was chicken in a rich homemade teriyaki sauce with mixed greens and shredded cabbage, topped with our Japanese style Caesar dressing. Yummy! On the side I ordered miso and white rice. Being a very skeptical ramen eater, I sample the ramen places whenever I visit a new city. I was drawn to the signature shio corn-butter ramen for the novelty of it even though shio is not quite my type of ramen - I had always loved thicker broth. My shio ramen came with a lovely presentation with a chunk of half a teaspoon of butter on top melting into the broth. In general butter makes everything taste better, period. However I have to say it's a sin to put butter in the ramen!!! Making it taste less than a ramen but a butter chicken soup I guess. Also I'm concerned if my cholesterol intake that I spooned out the unmelted butter. Karage was reasonable. I was here on a Thursday 1pm and it seems there was only one waiter - the service is a bit slow - it took ~20min for the Ramon to be brought to the table when there weren't that many other patrons. My wife and used to drive to Seattle to get our Ramen fix, before PDX became a noodle Mecca. We try ever ramen joint that opens, and re-check often. Maru's ramen is consistent and affordable. And they make their own noodles, broth,marinated eggs, etc. The grill is varied and well worth exploring. But we really miss the grilled Okra. The Sushi Neta is always fresh and well handled. Rice Curry: just like school lunch! (In Japan a very good thing). The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and truly love Japanese food. Though they're usually very busy. It's worth mentioning that it's possible to test drive a Toto heated toilet seat Just remember: it's an Izakaya: kind of loose, relaxed and a scramble. I really like their chicken katsu curry. The curry is very tasty and filling. The rest of this place is a hard pass. For one, it's pretty dirty. We went once and sat at the sushi bar. The dust covering the bar/glass area was really unappetizing (especially around raw fish). Sushi isn't very fresh and the whole place just needs a good cleaning. I do love me some good Japanese curry, but the rest is disappointing. read more
