So far, have sampled Drunken Chicken (very flavorful, especially the rosemary and garlic), White Chili and Chicken, Mushroom/Spinach Etouffee. And one special. Cool that they have some variety in vegetarian choices. Garlic bread to mop up whatever you did not inhale is spot on, too. Word to the wise - a lot of the chicken is pulled or nearly pulverized, so you won't be getting a lot of big chunks. Served over rice with aforementioned garlicky bread. Sad to report, this trip wasn't as lip smacking good as I remembered Yats to be. Now, it may have just been the new-to-me entree, Chicken Chipotle Alexio, I ordered after a long hiatus. I was feeling famished so I didn't take up the friendly guy behind the counter's offer for a taste sample. I'm not a very picky eater, but it just wasn't what I was expecting and wasn't for me. It leaned heavy on the cream, so much so that the chipotle flavor and other spices were lost IMO. Also, there was a single squarish piece of bone. Not the end of the world, but glad I didn't bite into it or choke on it...Well, as you may have guessed, I won't be back for this dish but I'd return to give the others a try. First things first... I love, love, love the music and vibe of this spot! I'm originally from MS, and today's musical selections made me feel like I was back home sitting on my mom's front porch! Second... the cheesy bread!!!! Are you serious!? Omg! The angels in heaven are smiling down on that bread! Third... my entrees... I got a half and half mix... jambalaya and chicken creole... now because I'm from the South, I think my palate has a special place for all things creole. And it's because of that personal reason that I can't give 5 stars. I think the flavor level was more of a "hot sauce" heat/spice rather than a "seasoning" spice. The service here is always great. They let you try any of the entrees you want and are always helpful with suggestions, etc. Doesn't matter if the line is out the door, they will bring you your food in less than 2 minutes. Any go to is always 1/2 chicken maux Choi and 1/2 whatever their weird item on the menu is that day, typically i like something spicy like the bacon and chorizo black bean chili. I was very disappointed with my Caribbean jerk étouffée. It looked somewhat like it haas been eaten before and had no flavor-no spice. After adding quite a lot of habanero hot sauce my food started to taste more like Cajun food. I do not want to caste aspersions because I picked the wrong menu item on my first visit though. Next time I will get the Chili Cheese Étouffée with crawfish. I also must not judge the rather mild palate of the Midwesterners as compared to my "the hotter the better" love of peppers, and very spicy food from Louisiana and Texas and Mexico. I cant believe Yats is so popular....I have not had anything close to decent there and have tried several times!!! It is mush on top of rice or mush mixed into rice....poor flavors. The bread is the best part of the meal, and that is greasy and over the top garlic. When they say chicken or sausage....they mean mushed nothingness....cant even tell what one is eating. Low-priced Louisiana style food with an ever-changing menu. I found this place because of Yelp and I was pleasantly surprised. It is a very small restaurant with a couple locations. When you order upfront at the table you can choose a large portion or a half portion or two options on the plate made it very easy and quick to decide. The employee was very friendly and helpful describing each plate. Next time I am in Indiana I will go here again I was very happy with the food and service. read more

I've been eating at different Yats locations since college days at IU. This one is fantastic just like the rest. The food is simple, delicious, and sticks to your bones! I crave their food on cold days as all the fishing are hearty and warm the soul! Since everything is so basic, it equates to being very consistent. A quick takeout Cajun meal. I had the red beans with smoked sausage and chili cheese étouffée with crawfish. For a "fast food" restaurant, the red beans and sausage were pretty good. I wasn't as big a fan of the étouffée, kind of bland and not much crawfish. For the price, better than a typical fast food restaurant. read more

I've known about Yat's for years and never stopped in. I'm not huge on spicy food. But, in an effort to go along with some Cajun cuisine fans, today was the day. High five to the crew for patiently navigating us through the menu and, specifically, away from the many special requests and needs of our party. (Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, nut-free, mild.) I was so disappointed in the jambalaya . I have eaten at Yats for many years. I had this dish many times and it was delicious. I got it 2 weeks ago and it was not edible. I went there yesterday, and I asked if I could taste it before I bought it, and they said they no longer do tastings. I am still unable to believe they have stopped at practice. The jambalaya I got yesterday was probably even worse than the previous one I had that was horrible, it was so hot not temperature but spicy that it burns my mouth. I took it apart to look at it and there it was jalapeño peppers numerous ones as far as it having andouille sausage 5 pieces. I made jambalaya all the time and I started looking at recipes that I've used in the past and none of them have jalapeños on them, so I do not understand what is going on cajun food is not supposed to be hot. I know Joe the owner and I'm sad to say I don't think I'm gonna eat there again I'll just make my food at home and eat it there. read more

Doesn't look much different than other restaurants from the outside but once you catch a glimpse of the indoor decor you know you're in for a treat. Some locations are more "authentic looking" than other BUT the food at every location is as delicious as the next. If your visiting from out of town it's a MUST. The most popular amongst my friends and family are the drunken chicken and chili cheese étouffée. All dishes are served over rice with buttered/garlic bread (I always get extra for like $1 or less). Confession time: I go here probably a little too frequently. But it's just so good! Their Drunken Chicken can literally turn a frown upside down. Too far? Not far enough! It's that delicious! I've always received great customer service at this location and they are on top of it when it comes to speed. I've never waited more than a few minutes for my food. Ever. Great warm comfort food on a cold day. Small batch style cooking so once its gone its gone. Staples to try: chili cheese etouffee with crawfish, chicken maque choux, and peanut butter pie. Each dish has a hint of spice to it but nothing outrageous, just good flavors. Add in the rice and garlic bread and you are set for a very filling warm meal. Order a 1/2, a 1/2 and 1/2, or a full. I personally like the 1/2 and 1/2 so I can stick with my staple chicken maque choux (chicken, corn, and a little sweetness) and then try something else as well. This place is great! It's a small place, cashier or the order person is always super friendly and inviting. There are funny pun inspired photos throughout the restaurant. I have had two different dishes and they have been excellent. Both entres have come with some dynamite toasted garlic bread. The dishes don't win any awards for intriguing textures as most creole food is a just a sauce with rice, but wow the flavor is intense. There is a perfect blend of spice and flavor. The jambalaya could easily be a meal for 2. Yats has quickly become a favorite for a quick dinner. read more

I used to go to the Yats in Broad Ripple like it was my god, and I a devout holy man. I then moved to the Castleton/Fishers border and it was just easier to go to the one on 96th. I've gone to this location three times. And each time I've been let down. I like many LOVE the Chili Cheese Etouffee with Crawfish, and the Spinach Mushroom Etouffee. I'll usually do 1/2 and 1/2 with an extra order of bread (I mean it's only like $7 bucks for the whole meal!) But each time I've been disappointed. The vibe of this location is very much like the suburb where it's located; BORING. Yats, Yats, Yats. I love Yats! (sang to the tune of Ron Burgundy singing about scotch) My husband and I were in Indy for a weekend long visit and we came here twice for lunch. The cajun food at Yats is so delicious! Both times we ate here I had the chili cheese crawfish etouffee over white rice. It comes with two pieces of buttered and toasted bread. The food already has a little spice to it but I like to add plenty more hot sauce to heat things up. Don't expect fine dining when you come to Yats. The seating area is small and your food is served on styrofoam plates. But you get a large portion for a small price (around $5 per meal). The menu consists of about 5 items written on a chalk board above the cashier but if you like cajun food they will have something you like. Yats is one of our must stops when we're back in Indy. read more

Yats is amazing! I have never had anything from here that I wouldn't order again. The menu changes daily, but my favorite standard here is the Chili Cheese Etouffee with Crawfish. One serving probably has more calories than you should ingest in a single day, but it's worth it! In fact, I'm eating leftovers of it from their Mass Ave location right now! The B & B and Spinach Mushroom Etouffee are also good options. The Fishers location lacks the character of the Mass Ave and Broad Ripple ones, because it is in a strip mall. But since I work on 116th Street, this is a good option for lunch! Yats has great food, some of the friendliest staff around, generous portions and very affordable prices (two can eat for less than $15). I love it so much, that I was disappointed when I went to New Orleans earlier this year - the food there wasn't as good as Joe's! read more
