No clue about the complaints I've seen here - have these folks ever been to another rug place? The collection is overwhelming and highly varied - newer, modern designs downstairs primarily while the more traditional styles are upstairs. The folks here might be quiet and direct but I've never experienced straight-up rudeness... but yes, culturally they probably will be off of the 'Minnesota nice' wavelength. If you can get over that though these folks are really great, perfectly happy to help flip through stacks of rugs for a couple hours, willing to negotiate on price a bit... especially if you're a repeat customer. Very first time I came in they let me take a rug home to 'test drive' for a few days before I decided to purchase. So no, nobody got down on bended knee and treated me like a prince or dumped empty platitudes on me about being customer-first and how much they appreciate my business - if I wanted that garbage I'd walk into a cell carrier store. I'll take a gruff exterior and kind soul over a friendly veneer coating a fetid corpse any day. read more

Yayla debunks three concerns I had about tribal rug shopping: 1. It costs an arm and leg, 2. You can't mix tribal with contemporary/modern furniture, 3. Rug shopping is such a hassle. The selection of rugs at Yayla is astonishing, at prices you can actually afford. The folks that work there will happily show you as many rugs as you'd like, and you're welcome to test out the rugs at home (locally) before making a purchase. I was able to try out two rugs before returning a second time to try three more. We settled on a beautiful and large Ersari rug, which worked very well with our contemporary furniture (who knew it'd play well with our C&B gray denim couch?). Since we live close by, I was able to solicit help from the store to help me move the rugs out of my apartment after we were done trying them out. The selection is beautiful and the price is comparable (if not cheaper) to buying machine made rugs at your general yuppie store. I find most rug places intimidating and scary, but this place is great. Two thumbs up! I will definitely be returning for more rugs! ps. The selection for 8x10 and 6x9 rugs was amazing (Bountiful. I wanted to come up with reasons to get more rugs because they were all so beautiful). We were a bit limited at 9x12, but there were still some stunning large pieces. Go. You won't regret it. A maze of stacked carpeting, two sizable rooms and a basement probably amounts to hundreds of herds of sheep And a mother load of mothballs, what an olfactory assault! Imagine all the weaving hours that went into filling the place, people's whole lives. Which you can read about in pamphlets given by the salespeople, how Cambridge. They're aggressive too, so hold your own. I didn't buy, though I'm tempted. Makes me appreciate my father's collection as a 4'x6' costs over $700. I'll try Craig's List first. read more

When you buy an oriental rug you have to be in it for the whole experience. It's such an expensive investment, based on taste as much as value. Ideally, you should think of it as acquiring a family heirloom. The staff at Yayla are very accommodating. They'll pull back as many rugs as you're willing to look at. And they treat everyone as a valued customer as soon as they walk in the door, regardless of appearance. Don't be turned off by the attention. And don't go if you're in a hurry. Pretend you're at a market in the Middle East and enjoy the process. Aside from all of the wonderful cultural and socially conscious initiatives Yayla is involved with, they offer fantastic customer service. They will let you bring home rugs to try with no obligation and will even let you exchange a rug several days after you purchase it if you regret your decision. As for the rugs,.. they are beautiful handmade works of art. My only complaint is that they didn't offer me tea. :) read more

This store has wonderful, unusual merchandise at very good prices. The staff is very helpful, and they helped me order a custom woven Nepalese rug some years ago to use as a stair runner. I get compliments all of the time, and the Tibetan wool is so durable for a staircase. I also have ordered some more classic design rugs for a friend--very satisfied! read more

Would not buy rugs anywhere else! I have been buying there for the last 18 years because no one else can match the quality, price, honesty, and reliability found in Chris and his team. There is little if any marketing done so this is a hidden gem (they provide rugs to other intermediaries throughout the US so can't really compete against one's customers) The store is child friendly (try shopping with little children), the staff is very knowledgeable, and they stand behind every product sold. You can take home rugs on trial basis and Chris can help solve any issue that arises Finally, many rug sales support child education and working condition imporivement projects in developing countries so there is "giving back" element not found elsewhere As for quality, these thick pile vegetable dyed rugs hold up to high traffic, kids, and dogs. Periodic cleaning is advisable as are repairs (Ercan Korknaz) available across the street. I just went to Yayla to get my carpet cleaned and I was amazed by the high level of customer service. The woman who helped me explained the inherent risk associated with cleaning the type of rug I had (not an Oriental rug) and I ended up not using their service. That being said, next time I have a rug (that's not moth ridden and likely to get destroyed via the standard cleaning process) I will be using Yayla! This place is fantastic! Everybody there is so friendly and happy to flip rugs for 2hrs just to help you find the perfect one. Their selection of rugs is huge, which means there is something for everyone. Their prices are fair and the quality of the rugs is very high. The rugs are made in india, Afghanistan, Tibet and Pakistan and they opened a charity where part of the profit they make goes back to the people making the rugs in these countries.
