This place is always a solid choice for authentic Chinese food, especially if you are looking for dishes that are not too heavy in flavor. Our favorites last time were the sizzling beef with scallion/onion and combination of pork/shrimp/broccoli crispy noodle. I would not skip on veggies: the water spinach in garlic sauce is a hidden gem not served in many places. The salt/pepper pork was only okay - I feel if a dish is traditionally more heavy in flavor then it may come across as lackluster here. Service was also great! When ordering the crispy noodle, we had concerns due to a member of our party having shellfish allergies, but the waitress was quick to offer the option to accommodate - bonus points. Food is wonderful as evidenced by the non-stop string of take out orders going out. Service is ok. Ambiance is dated 90's decor but functional and pretty clean. The fish tanks would not be my choice. Yea's wok use to be our go to restaurant. We live in walking distance and would bring all our guests here. Many evenings we ordered takeout for those nights I didn't want to cook. They have a English menu (with more American style food) and a Chinese menu (with more genuine Szechuan dishes). We have ordered from both menus and the food just is not as good as before. The meals are not as flavorful. The calamari texture is not as crispy. And the portion sizes are smaller. The restaurant is just "ok". Made a reservation for a special event; not only were they flexible and accommodating, they were in-tune to personal needs. I changed the reservation twice, not only did they figure it out but they were genuine and nice. Let's be real; many places don't provide the patience and they delivered! What a relief. I've been patronizing Yea's for years having lived in Newcastle. The food has been stellar, 'authentic', standing-room-only for their popularity. But today was my last visit. The food may be good at Yea's but it's how food's 'served up' that also matters. I don't mean the plating or presentation, but attitude. I'm accustomed to Newcastle being the Eastside's Chinatown, catering to a large 'Asian' population. But, Yea's sterile, forced treatment of Caucasians has evolved to simply be too much. Their punishment is way out of proportion to the crime committed: 'being hungry while white'. It's so obvious and kills one's appetite altogether making it no longer worth the wait. The last time I checked, Restaurant Proprietorship is free enterprise. Since Yea's business won't suffer for living inside the Chinese bubble they've created, they've no incentive but to continue on in this vein. I suggest instead Yang's Kitchen across Coalcreek Parkway, two businesses left (north) of the QFC Market where the food is stellar and the hospitality is far more palatable. read more

Bummer, the reviews looked so promising! We got half duck, Mongolian beef, calamari, hot and sour soup, mandarin chicken, spicy beef cold dish, eggplant, and house chow mein. The duck was the most disappointing and most likely an older duck reheated for us. It was dried off the bone and had that smell... it also wasn't really half a duck in the conventional sense. It had some great looking pieces of skin on top and then on the bottom were more fragments and bits and pieces here and there. This was so disappointing. The house chow mein traveled 15-20 minutes before it came on our table and unfortunately, everything became over cooked and soft. The noodles weren't too seasoned and also very soft, so it definitely did not satisfy any noodle craving. I wish they'd cut a corner off the to go box for steam to escape or cook it more Al dente for take out. The Mongolian beef and calamari was standard, eggplant was great but it is greasy like others mentioned. The spicy cold dish was also sub par. It wasn't mixed very well, and the flavor wasn't too balanced (lots of hot oil but not seasonings). The hot and sour soup was also filled with lots of cabbage and did not taste like traditional hot and sour soup. Cabbage has a strong flavor, and I think it really distorted the soup. I'd rather pay normal price and get less soup but the right soup. Instead of cutting back corners on ingredients, perhaps the owners can consider keeping the integrity of their dishes but reducing the volume or even just increasing prices but retaining quality. I personally think this would of been the better option to mitigate cost of inflation. All in all, I really hope to see this restaurant come back with raging positive reviews of how they're back to how they once were so I can rely on this place for quick dinners in the future. The person accommodating on the phone and in person was very kind tho, so 3 stars for friendliness! I would love to support this establishment once their strategy improves. read more

My family has been going here for years and it's one of our favorite restaurants. Their egg drop soup is by far the best I've ever had, it's slightly sweet, warm, and comforting, and never disappoints. We also love their volcano fried rice, which is essentially fried rice topped with a rich sauce made with mushrooms, shrimp, and pork, and the basil eggplant is great too. The last time we went, we tried the three cup chicken and I was so impressed. The meat was super tender and had a great umami flavor. Their menu is pretty expansive and we haven't tried everything, but I would be pretty confident that most things are pretty great, and there is definitely something for everyone. read more

It's been a long time since I've been to Yea's, but it was as good as I remembered. I got egg flower soup, combo chow mein, and spicy chicken in black bean sauce. Everything tasted great, and the portions are huge! I ordered for takeout, and the order was ready on time and was piping hot. The only thing that would have made it better was for the chicken entree to come with white rice, or to mention it didn't come with rice on the online menu. The huge portion size more than makes up for not having rice though. It's rare to find larger portions that don't use rice as a filler. Also, the family who own this restaurant are all very sweet. This place has been a mainstay for many years in the area. It's been a local favorite the entire time. I understand that Covid forced many businesses to change. However, I don't think that we should necessarily be expected to accept all the changes. What's the same? The full menu of oily, Chinese goodness that you've come to expect. They're still trying hard to provide the same menu they always have. What's different? Small things you may or may not have noticed. Hot and sour soup recipe changed... Who puts cabbage in it?? There's also no longer any meat in it. Dishes with not as many meat or veggies as before. Lunch special only gets one scoop of fried rice instead of two before? You may think I'm nitpicking here, but if no one calls out these changes, then people won't know. The restaurant won't know that we know. Hopefully some of these changes are just transient. I want this restaurant to survive which is why I continue to patronize them. I just hope they realize that customers can recognize the changes and we all hope that they will one day be able to return to their former glory! read more

I have been to this place for almost 20 years. I didn't like it at the beginning because the service was very bad in the past; however, in recent years, they have improved a lot. Now it is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Also, I believe this is probably the cheapest Chinese restaurant in the area. The service now is wonderful. In the past, the ladies at the reception were unfriendly and rude, despite that they were pretty. Recently, they got new crew at the reception, and the new ladies are very friendly and polite. Every time I come here, they welcome me warmly and remember me. The waiters and waitresses used to be very rude in the past. I remember many years ago when my kid was still little, I had to pick up my kid from the high chair from time to time during a meal to give him some comfort. Once when I just picked up my son from his high chair, one waitress came to pull away the high chair and put it back to the place where they stacked all the high chairs. I was quite upset about it, so I stopped coming for years. Recently I came back, and I was surprised to see improved services. The waiters or waitresses are much more polite now, and they do check with us during the meal to see if we need anything. Finally, for the dishes, there's a secret about this restaurant. That is, they offer 2 sets of menu, English one is Americanized Chinese food and Chinese one is authentic Chinese food. We didn't realize it until one day we didn't ask for the Chinese menu and then ordered from the English menu. We found out that the items on the menu were partially same and partially different. We also found out that even if it's the same item when you ordered from English menu it became Americanized taste. Their Americanized taste was fine, not bad though. However, if you are looking for authentic Chinese food, you need to ask for Chinese menu and have someone who understand Chinese order for you. read more

Loved the veggies in this entree. Chicken was tender. Loved the brown sauce for this dish. Mongolian Chicken: 3. Great portion size! It was a little too saucy/liquidy for what I'm used to with any Mongolian stir fry , but all the flavors were there and was enjoyable. I just mixed up my fried rice with the sauce and worked out just fine. Salt and Pepper Shrimp: 3.5 I had high hopes for this as I love shell-on, head-on salt and pepper shrimp.
