In this case, I got a truly snack sized pumpkin rice cake complete with pine nuts, peanuts, and pumpkin powder. Big selection of dduk but everything was in Korean so I had to read the ingredient label to really tell what was in it. Needless to say, i purchased the rice cake purely on presentation and packaging. A lot of the goodies were sold out by the time we came by around 4:30pm but the items I had were pretty good! They ARE heavy so it's best grab a variety and share to get a taste of everything. The real star is the bingsoo. Love the traditional flavors! you won't find the trendy fruit flavors here but the red bean and black sesame options are delicious. Had to make the trip out to Yedang for fresh and traditional rice cakes for a 100 day ceremony! I was happy to say that it was steamed that morning that I picked it up and came simply but cleanly decorated. The rice cake itself was as expected and had the lightly sweetened rice cake flavor that I love. We also ordered the three smaller rice cake balls that came in black sesame, red bean, and mung bean covering which were a hit for all. Just a disclaimer, trying to serve it on a plate out of the packaging will cause everything to mix so we ended up cutting the top off and serving it that way. Why 5 stars to start? Rice cake or tteok done in the traditional fashion is hard enough. My mom refuses to buy New year's rice cake from anywhere other than here, but sadly, they have lost our loyalty. My mom purchased several bags of rice cake for New Year's a few days in advance for our family and to gift her friends. However, my mom along with one of her friends noticed obvious mold on the rice cakes shortly after. They were refrigerated immediately once home, so it could not have been due to our mishandling. We called Yedang immediately after noticing and brought it over in-person for an exchange. To our disappointment, the lady handling our issue was very unprofessional and inattentive. She suspected us of lying and was very ill-mannered in managing our complaint. The first thing notice when you walk in is the earthy and homey smell...but from that I had a feeling this place is authentic. I got the red bean patbingsoo. It came in this cute gold bowl and spoon. The toppings were red bean dates, chestnut, pieces of mochi (so good), and dried dates (added a nice crunch to the plate). This is not some typical bingsoo you get at any old Korean cafe. They uses quality ingredients (which makes it pricy) with Korean traditional flavors. I tried the green tea and su jung gwa (Korean cinnamon tea) bingsoo. My personal favorite is the su jung gwa bingsoo which contains dried persimmons, dried dates, pieces of rice cake drenched in su jung gwa tea in shaved ice. In all my years on earth, I've never had a patbingsu. Patbingsu is the Korean version of a shaved ice dessert which is common in many Asian countries. I was excited to finally try the Korean version, and here at Yedang I thought it would be a great place to try one because there's a board outside the restaurant prominently advertising that it's here for your enjoyment. We walked in and many of the customers were Korean which is a great sign. The wall to the right the entrance contained a multitude of Korean mochi, all of which looked handmade. Many were wrapped in saran wrap and take note that it didn't cheapen the appearance. For me, Yedang was like walking into the great unknown mainly because I'm not Korean. We were adventurous and got something approximating a red bean mochi square. It was delicious and had more substance and grit than plain red bean paste. We absolutely loved the different mouth feel. When we approached the counter, the nice lady behind the counter took our red bean patbingsu order and made sure we wanted to be served in the restaurant. There is a long row of chairs and tables to the left hand side of the dining room. When they were ready, one of the ladies in the kitchen brought the Patbingsu to our table. I appreciated the pillowy-soft snow-like ice with sweetened condensed milk drizzled on top. The toppings consisted of nuts, dates, mochi, and many items I couldn't identify, but what I got in the end was something that was substantial, chewy, satisfying without being overly sweet. My friend and I agreed that at $9.99, though expensive, it is a dessert we enjoyed immensely. If patbingsu isn't to your liking, Yedang serves a host of sweet dessert soups, like Chinese tang shui. There is also a set of different western-style cakes on the menu and also, Korean drinks that I couldn't fully identify, but surely they should be good. I would say their main target audience are older women and the elderly. It's not that the place is good or bad, but more about if you know how to appreciate rice cakes or not. They have a really authentic shaved ice (all year round). If you're into the common milk snowflower shaved ice covered in condensed milk, this shaved ice is not for you. The shaved ice has dried nuts, dried fruits, red bean, healthy grains, and real rice cake mochi (not from a package). The prices are on the hefty side, but you have to know that you're paying for quality. When I went, this cafe was super quiet and I constantly found my voice towering over the cafe. If I could, I would want to give them 0 stars. The reason why I'm giving them a 0 is due to their customer service. I have been coming here for many years and supported them. All their goods are delicious, HOWEVER, every time I come to buy things their customer service seems to get worse and worse. And frankly, today was the last straw. I come here all the time to buy their rice cakes for special occasions. Hence, I always buy a lot and in their gift boxes. I like choosing my own rice cakes to put in the boxes rather than buying their preset boxes due to health restrictions and allergies which I have voiced. Instead of understanding my situation, they scoffed at my request and proceeded to hover over me while I was packing my gift box and commented at me saying, "Let's see how you package them that it's better than ours." It is NOT about the presentation of the gift box, it is a HEALTH CONCERN and honestly none of their business as to why any of their customer would want to choose their own rice cakes when they offer the option to do so. On top of that, like I have mentioned before, when I do go to Yedang, most of the time I am going there buy gift set in which they also give a white paper bag with their logo sticker on it to put the rice cake gift box (rather than a generic "Thank You" plastic bag). When I asked for 2 paper bags because I bought 2 gift boxes, the workers again SCOFFED at me and hesitated to provide that. I came here with one of my girlies after having pho. We were craving shaved ice but didn't know if it was still in season since it is 20F outside. I showed my friend a pic of someone eating patbingsu 2 days ago and she immediately recognized the place. She calls it the "gold spoon place" because they serve their shaved ice in a cute, heavy gold bowl with matching gold spoons. From outside, I could not tell what they sold but once we walked in, I saw the duk or rice cakes against the wall. They specialize in rice cakes and we sampled one of them (too bad I don't know what it was called..) There are only two patbingsu options - red bean $7.99 and cinnamon $8.99. We got the red bean and waited for the lady to bring it over. My friend and I were confused because the menu didn't say what else was included but I looked at previous pics and it looked pretty epic! On top of shaved ice, she piled on red bean paste (definitely homemade), dry date chips, duk, dry figs, and fine khaki colored powder. It is very different from the patbingsu I have tried at other dessert cafes. It was mildly sweet from the red bean paste, which is why I gave it 5 stars!! (I hate sweet stuff, maybe it's from working as a dental assistant for 3 years?) It is a healthy and "cleansing" way to end dinner. Two other reviewers have stated that there is a language barrier. I have not tried communicating with the lady since I came here with a Korean friend and she ordered for the two of us. But I believe that non-Korean speakers may have trouble ordering if they do not know what they want. The menu was simple, so do not expect detailed descriptions of each item. I will be returning!!!
