I had already previewed the menu and was anticipating the meal ahead. The duck sounded amazing and is almost always my first choice. However, the short ribs were tempting, as were the scallops in a coconut curry broth. I went with my first instinct, the duck, paired with a French Onion soup. The medium-rare duck breast was perfectly prepared; I liked the sweet potato puree and slaw accompaniments. Incidentally, the portion was huge. My friend enjoyed her braised short rib, which was on the 2-course supper menu, available before 6pm. For dessert, I went with the chocolate cube. The macaron at The Blu Kitchen, this tiny little place with barely any operating hours at all, from a quality of product perspective is making delicious little morsels that compare favorably with the world's best. Some of the flavors, I'm looking at you salted caramel, are even better than what I had abroad. Of course, there are others that fall short. Notably the ones with sprinkles. However, I am told by Adina they are big sellers with the local crowd. Mon dieu. Arrive early on Saturday for the best selection. Things will sell out. But this is the cost of great food. Comparing the macaron here to others available locally, these are better than that preciously cute store in downtown Ann Arbor. The flavors are true. The textures are perfect. And they far surpass that Detroit pastry chef guy who makes other great things but whose macaron leave me disheartened. Macaron are pretty pricey for a little cookie. But when they are good, they are worth every penny. Why? Because they encapsulate a pursuit of perfection. As a small bite, they need to pack a flavorful punch. That flavor comes from the center. But here's the trick, that center cannot overshadow the rest of the confection. It has to blend seamlessly into the textures of the crisp outer shell, which coalesces into a tender almond flour interior, and that dense creamy middle. At one of the famous places in Paris, the filling was just far too stiff and produced a jarring effect. This can happen on occasion to the best macaron bakers and Adina is no exception. But her pursuit of perfection and attention to detail in every element of production are extraordinary. This review has been a long time coming and serves as a reminder to me that I need to get back to Plymouth for another fix. It's been far too long, and I saw on the gram I just missed coconut caramel. Dang it. If you are a macaron fan, you owe it to yourself to get some of these in your mouth. You can thank me later. The inside of the suite was bright and spacious, however there were no seats or tables. Maybe they used to have some stools and high-tops in the past? A faux green wall was on the right, but it seemed out of sorts when nearly all places with such a social media friendly feature also have seating. There were over a dozen cobbler flavors, and each order included ice cream. The surprise was the variety of other desserts that were available. Cinnamon rolls, cookies, banana pudding, pudding shakes, brownies, Belgian waffles, and churro stix were offered. Some of these items were on display in plastic cases at the service counter. By using such a specific business name, it undersold the diversity of sweet treats that you could purchase here. A Mango Peach Cobbler was what I decided to buy. Because everything was packaged to go, the cobbler was served in one takeout container while the cinnamon vanilla ice cream was scooped into its own styrofoam cup. A cobbler is a fruit filling poured into a large baking dish that is covered with a batter/crust before being baked in an oven. It's essentially like a deep dish pie. I didn't detect much mango flavor, but the peaches were very sweet. I wished the cobbler portion size was larger for the $9 price. The ice cream was a nice touch if you wanted to eat the cobbler a la mode.
