If you want some cheap sushi that's good enough this is the place. They are a bit slow and you're not going to get exceptional service but it's good enough. This is a hybrid sushi restaurant. They are increasing in popularity and seem to be popping up everywhere. Am I eating mis-labeled fish? Quite possibly. Are the prices insanely cheap? Absolutely. $1 sashimi and nagiri?! We were doubtful of the quality of fish at this price, but was pleasantly surprised. The tuna, salmon and white tuna were fresh and thick. The other sushi rolls were your typical rolls that you could get at other sushi joints for the same quality, perfect for my sushi cravings. The place was also newer and cleaner than the former Red Ginger. I think this used to be an old Training Table due to the Training Table signs on the bathroom doors. LOL Knocked off one star for service. Don't get me wrong, our waitress was extremely nice, it was another waitress who had nothing to do with our table that was a tad on the 'cray cray' side. We had ordered the salmon/avocado and tuna/avocado hand roll but regular rolls were brought instead. We just asked if this was supposed to be the hand roll and the other waitress rudely jumped in and said, "did you tell your server you wanted the hand roll?" We had mistakenly assumed it was handroll since it was in the handroll section and I said, "oh, our waitress hadn't clarified it with us." Midvale, UT: Hands down my favorite sushi place in the valley. Don't be put off by the "too cheap to be delicious" prices because I can assure you that I've enjoyed the sushi here more than any other place in Salt Lake City. Though this place doesn't have any Michelin stars, the sushi is presented well and tastes great. The California Roll is the best I've ever had, and even their westernized Tiffany and Vegas rolls are amazing. My personal favorite is actually the fish-less/vegetarian tempura veggie roll. Regardless of what you get though - the sushi rolls, the miso soup, etc. - you'll be a happy camper. I've never paid more than $5.00 a roll. This place definitely gets packed during peak times so I recommend getting the sushi to go. I call about 15-20 min before and my order is always ready when I walk in through the door. They pack a good about wasabi and soy sauce along with chopsticks so you can eat the moment you get home. All in all, I recommend this fabulous location. This used to be my favorite place for Asian food. But the last time I went I was extremely disappointed. The orange chicken tasted like it had been microwaved. It was bland and REALLY dry. It tasted disgusting. Ended up throwing it all away. The customer service has steadily gotten worse as well. The staff are rude and don't seem happy to help people. Came here Sept 2nd, 2013 at the recommendation of a friend. When she told me it was owned by the same people as Red Ginger I was a little apprehensive, but I'm glad I came. My wahini and I went in for dinner, nice place, clean, fairly quiet when we got there, the menu is pretty extensive as one might expect for a place like this, the food was absolutely magnificent! However, unfortunately we arrived on a Friday night, and the place filled up soon after we got there :-( it turned out to be kind of a loud room, and our poor waiter was so overwhelmed, there were other people working there, but no one seemed to have a table except for him. Which meant in the end, service wound up being severely less than what we had hoped for. We are both in the restaurant business, and have been for the majority of our 60 plus years on this planet! Like I said, the food is great, the prices are very reasonable for what you get, but if you're looking for that style of service that exists in the South Pacific, you're probably not going to find it here, after all it is Salt Lake City. And not to dog talk Salt Lake, we have been to some marvelous restaurants in this town, with some exceptional cuisine, and have had times where our service was way over the top, and times for our service was way under the bottom :-) you got to take the good with the bad sometimes, but I would strongly urge any of you who want good sushi to go check it out! It's Ok. My wife enjoyed her sushi but the rest of the fare like my daughter's lo mein and my orange chicken were sub par. I'm not even sure there was any chicken tucked into all the breading. The prices were reasonable. There was a wide variety of rolls to choose from including some with no fish for those of us who don't enjoy sea food. The service could use some improvement. Food came out very staggered. The noodles came 5 minutes before anything else and the sushi rolls came minutes apart as well. The waiters and staff showed no sense of urgency nor care for their customers. Fish inside you could choose from Tuna, Yellowtail or Salmon I think. Very yummy!! Will ask if I can get this roll in handroll form next visit! As we were fearful of eating at Yi Sushi Bistro due to the price - we all were very satisfied with the quality and felt just fine later that night and the next day! That was a confirmation that we just found our new sushi spot!!! Today I ordered a take out order. It was pretty big order. Consisting on 17 rolls and a order of combination fried rice. They told us it would be 35 minutes. It ended up being an hour wait and they forgot 2 rolls! I looked at the bill and they and my two rolls on it, marked it off like they already put it in the container. Had a craving for some good sushi and didn't want to pay through the nose. Yelp reviews of Yi Sushi were good so I gave it a try. 50% off rolls and $1 sushi and sashimi pieces were a big bonus. Getting out of work late and dining solo, I elected to get take out. Wished this place had a web site and menu posted online :( The place was moderately busy on Thu night (Jan 16), about 8:15 pm. I ordered 3 rolls and was told it would be a 15-20 minute wait. I think it ended up being about 12 minutes. Here are the rolls I ordered: - Ai roll (spicy tuna, spicy salmon, & crunch inside; tuna & salmon laid over top) - Executive roll (tempura shrimp & avocado inside; tuna, lime, tobiko, & scallions on top; drizzled with spicy mayo & eel sauce - Spicy scallop roll (spicy scallops mixed with crunch & tobiko, with cucumber and daikon radish sprouts) All rolls were great tasting and fresh. The amount of rice was not dominating (I've had my share of rolls that were about 75% rice, and not that good rice at that!), a good balance with the fish and other ingredients. The presentation was artistically pleasing. All this for less than $14 (not including tax). Yi Sushi has a lot of similarities with Red Ginger - roll and sushi/sashimi pricing, and restaurant layout. Some of the reviews indicate that these 2 restaurants share ownership. I've eaten at Red Ginger also, but I think Yi is a little better - larger parking lot and more spacious dining area.
