My husband and I had dinner here tonight, and overall it was a really memorable experience. We've…read moretraveled quite a bit and tried sushi in many different cities, including around the Los Angeles area where we live and have our favorite spots. So when we visit a sushi restaurant, we tend to evaluate everything as a whole -- price, quality, service, and of course the flavors. For dinner we ordered the Mango Tuna Roll (which was our first time trying a mango-style sushi roll), the 8-piece Omakase Nigiri, a Double Toro Roll, two pieces of Otoro, and a hot sake. With a 20% tip included, the total for the two of us came to $163.50, which honestly falls within the average range of what we usually spend for a sushi dinner like this. Normally we might pay around $120-$130 depending on the place, sometimes a little more if we add an extra item or two. The portion sizes were pretty standard. Not unusually large, but not small either -- similar to what we've experienced at many other sushi restaurants. Where this place really stood out was the depth of flavor. The quality and balance of the ingredients were excellent. At one point I actually caught myself closing my eyes just to focus on the taste, which is something I almost never do. The preparation felt very refined and the flavors were elevated, rich, and memorable. I would describe it as delicate portions with very elevated flavors. Because of that, I'm giving this place 5 out of 5 stars. This is the kind of restaurant that works perfectly for a nice dinner with your partner. It's not necessarily a place where you go wild ordering everything on the menu like at a taco spot. Instead, it's better to be thoughtful with what you choose and enjoy a few well-crafted dishes. You can easily have a special, enjoyable dinner here without going overboard. Definitely worth visiting if you're in the area and want a quality sushi experience with refined flavors. The only thing I felt was missing was a small welcome miso soup. In some sushi restaurants we've visited, they serve a tiny cup of miso with a couple pieces of tofu as a warm welcome. It's a very small gesture, but it creates a nice first impression and adds a sense of hospitality to the experience. Considering the quality and pricing of the menu here, a simple welcome miso soup would fit perfectly with the overall dining experience.

Clean modern space, service checked in frequently and water refills were good. They answered any questions I had and provided good suggestions. Everything was prepared well. There was some waiting for different parts as some came from the kitchen and some from the chef. Since it was busy it definitely set things back a bit. Everything from the chef had a simple description for what it was. My faves for the meal were the scallop sashimi, the chiwan mushi, the yakimono, king salmon, and med fatty tuna. The scallops were flavorful, and just melted. Probably the best bite that I had. The cuts of fish were great. I liked how simple the chiwan mushi was. Definitely was great with the cold weather. The yakimono the butter wasn't overpowering and was well balanced with the ingredients. There was also a fried appetizer that was good but the name of it escapes me. Certainly worth the price tho if I had more people with me, I would definitely get reservations.

Grill and Tofu House is an excellent, family run establishment that serves up delicious food. The space is very nice and the service is very friendly. I ordered a Dolsot bibimbop because I love food that comes to your table and it's still cooking! I also love that your entree is served with several Banchan (appetizer) dishes. One thing I love about any dining experience is getting a lot of different flavors and textures in one meal. The banchan here had seven different dishes! Of course you get your kimchee, bean sprouts, fish cakes and then some other pickled fruits and veggies. They also gave me what seemed like a roasted sardine? In any case, it was delicious! The Dolsot Bibimbap was a hit! Crispy rice, vegetables, beef and a fried egg on top. Plus, some gochujang sauce to go on it! So yummy! I feel like the prices here are pretty standard for the area, but I do think it's 100% worth the money. Check them out if you're in the area!

Coincidentally, some of my friends were also thinking of coming here so we made it happen on Sunday evening. We pre-ordered the big duck and shared the rainbow salad, bok choy with morel mushrooms, sweet and sour shrimp and sweet and sour whole fish. The Peking Duck was indeed the best I've had in the Bay Area (it's crispy, rich but somehow not greasy). You get the traditional crepes (as opposed to the Bao in most places) and accompaniments. They also made a great broth with the duck bones that served as an excellent consommé. The rest of the dishes were also good - I would order that shrimp and rainbow salad again for sure. Service was OK and the restaurant looks recently remodeled. There were five of us and we spent about $55 each - an incredible value for the meal. Highly recommended!!!

We were promptly seated and we were supposed to be ordering on the tablet. Since it was our first time, we chose to ask the waiter. We found out that Beijing style is either spicy or sweet!! Yes, the Peking duck was served very ornately, some slices arranged as a blooming flower, most of the meat and the crispy skin served in a duck shaped tureen with candles in the base to keep the meat warm, steaming pancakes in a basket. Now the difference is on the plate that came with sliced cucumbers and slivered onions there is a substantial amount of ...SUGAR! Yup, apparently Beijing people sprinkle sugar on top of their duck! And nope, we skipped this ingredient. We also had green beans ( asked for non spicy ), peppered angus beef cubes and garlic ( different kind of heat, we can do this !) fried tofu plain, and combination fried rice, and crispy fried shrimp. This was a surprise, the shrimp was in the shell and nicely fried, crunchy.... BUT they were totally SWEET!! Sugar sweet, dessert sweet! Nowhere was it mentioned they would be this sweet! There were some interesting dishes we saw on neighboring tables, like the spicy chicken, but since we don't eat that spicy, we didn't order that. They offered hot pot too, but the whole party had to order the hot pot, not just one or two persons. The tables did have wells for the hot pot, so I saw people have to get up to dip and cook their meats in the hotpot broths. Not a good set up. Parking is easily found on the streets, but be warned you need to feed the meters till 8 pm even on Sunday.

It was such a hot day, and all we wanted was a refreshing cold meal. One of the things I love about coming here is creating my own omakase. Unfortunately, they were out of one of my longtime favorites, the baby lobster. This time I ordered the Santa Barbara uni, ama-ebi, baby bluefin toro, and kanpachi. The Santa Barbara uni is still the highlight, rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious. It's still one of the best I've had, although I did notice the portions have gotten smaller. As a regular who's been coming here for years, I was disappointed with the bluefin toro and kanpachi. The bluefin toro lacked the buttery texture I remember, while the kanpachi was missing its clean flavor and firm, delicate bite. Overall, the quality didn't feel as consistent as it used to. We also ordered a few rolls and a bento box, which were decent. Service was a bit slow, although they seemed busy, and the ambiance was fine. I've brought many friends and family here over the years because this used to be one of my go-to sushi spots. It makes me a little sad to say this, but I do feel the quality has declined. I hope they can get back to the level that made them so special, but for now, it may be time for me to explore some new favorites. :(

At first, it was a little disconcerting... the parking lot was largely empty, but then we realized it was late Sunday night (around 845pm). Upon entering, it was really dark. Then you enter the restaurant and turn that corner, and whoa... it's all chabudai-like seating! Basically all private rooms with glass walls, making it open and private at the same time! We reviewed the menu, and very quickly ordered the ankimo to start. As it is a yakitori place, we also ordered some skewers: Akaushi beef (salt/pepper and spicy), the pork belly, the beef tongue, chicken thigh and saba. Kiddo had his usual Tonkatsu ramen. Everything was delicious! I really enjoyed the charcoal taste to everything! And the kiddo gave two thumbs up for his ramen... and as we looked around the other rooms, we noted everyone had a ramen bowl, so that was definitely a big win. Service was attentive. We did not want for anything! It is on the pricier side for skewers, but with the economy the way that it is, it's to be expected.

All the food was delicious, my favorite was the wagyu beef skewer, bacon wrapped enoki, and king mushroom. I especially love that you can taste the charcoal from the skewers. The items do come out as they are prepared, so the meal can be a staggered wait on times/items, which I don't mind. I only give 4/5 stars because while the service was attentive when it came to removing plates, nobody bothered to come check on us or instructed which skewers would pair best with the condiments on the table - even if it was just spicy, salt, and pepper. I also marked down on our OpenTable reservation that we were celebrating an achievement and it wasn't mentioned.

There aren't a lot of sushi places in the Bay Area that open late, so I'm really glad that I found…read moreout about this place! This is a small and cozy restaurant - ideal for a date or small groups. I came here on a Friday night and it wasn't too busy. However, it took a while before my husband and I were seated at our table. If you're hangry, this might not be the ideal spot to go to. There were only two people working the entire restaurant. I think it's the husband making the sushi and the wife taking the orders and bringing them to the tables. There's no parking lot, only street parking, so plan accordingly. The wait didn't bother me too much considering they did have quite a bit of to go orders to fulfill, the phone was ringing and it was just the two of them. So, please be patient if you're going to eat here. I'm sure they are trying their best! They have Japanese food/sushi on their menu, but they also have Korean dishes as well. I ordered a hot California roll, regular California roll with imitation crab (you can ask for real crab- it'll just cost extra). I also ordered Lemon Killer roll and the San Mateo roll. My husband ordered the Penthouse roll and Dragon roll. The Hot California Roll has: Deep fried California roll w/unagi sauce, spicy mayo - I really enjoyed the hot California roll. The tempura batter is really nice. The rice is still soft, but the tempura batter has a nice crunch to it. I really enjoyed that this roll came out warm and not lukewarm or cold. The spicy mayo sauce they put on top really compliments the tempura batter well. It also goes well with the unagi sauce. I love sweet, spicy and savory combinations and this roll definitely had that. It was slightly sweet from the unagi sauce. The California Roll has: imitation crab meat & avocado - The avocado they use is really fresh and creamy. I like how they shredded and minced the imitation crab in the roll. I have been to places that just use a chunk of imitation crab in their California roll. The only areas for improvement that I could think of is that I wish the pieces of the roll weren't cut so thick and I wish they added sesame seeds to the roll. It really helps elevate it. The Lemon Killer Roll has: salmon, & sliced lemon over shrimp tempura, avocado, & cucumber roll w/unagi sauce, lemon mayo - I'm a big fan of rolls that have raw salmon and then a slice of lemon on top. I really enjoyed the shrimp tempura in this roll. The avocado and cucumber were very fresh. I love being able to taste cucumber in a sushi roll. It goes well with the sushi rice and the rice vinegar used in the sushi rice. I wish that the lemon slices were thicker. There wasn't a whole lot of lemon taste. They also don't slice the lemon here with the skin still intact, which isn't a good or bad thing; it's a personal preference. I have never been to a sushi restaurant that use lemon mayo, until now. I thought that was pretty unique and it was quite tasty. - Here's where the Lemon Killer Roll lost some points. I feel like the lemon slices could be thicker. When I received the roll, I could barely see the lemon slices on top of the salmon. It was like looking at an invisible pimple patch on your face. (Weird comparison, I know lol). The salmon itself wasn't that great quality. I have been to many sushi restaurants and when ordering a sushi roll that had salmon on top, it was fattier, and fresher. Another area for improvement is the menu itself. When I was deciding on what to order, the photo on the menu for the Lemon Killer Roll shows it has tobiko on top, but the description of the roll doesn't mention any tobiko. I was pretty bummed that it actually came out with no tobiko. I understand that the menu says food presentation may vary or subject to change, but the photo should still be an accurate representation of what I'm actually ordering and what I'm actually going to get. Otherwise, without the tobiko, the roll should've been a little cheaper. The San Mateo Roll has: Unagi & avocado over soft shell crab, cucumber roll w/unagi sauce -this roll reminds me of Rock n' Roll, but it has soft shell crab. I really enjoyed this roll. All the ingredients really go well together. The unagi wasn't fishy at all. The Penthouse Roll has: Cooked shrimp & tempura bits over shrimp tempura, cucumber roll w/unagi sauce The Dragon Roll has: Unagi & avocado over shrimp tempura, cucumber roll w/unagi sauce What I also appreciate and enjoyed about all of these rolls is that the rice wasn't too hard, and the rolls did not fall apart. They were nicely made in terms of the rolling process. It was only the California roll that the pieces could have been cut smaller. They were very thick. Oh, and they have really good sushi ginger here and free tea! It's like a roasted rice tea. Very comforting for this cold weather! Overall, I had a very pleasant experience and would love to come back again. My husband really enjoyed it too!
