Strolling down memory lane, this modest restaurant was a frequently visited spot ages ago. I am glad that they are still in business and hopefully doing well. The food was still as good as I remembered. Reasonably priced and generous portions. There were two of us dining that evening and the restaurant was pretty much empty. The service was okay. Our server was very nice but it was a bit disappointing though that she got both our orders wrong. Anyway we just went with it. I don't remember back then if the restaurant was as disorderly as it was now. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I noticed carton boxes in plain sight underneath the sushi bar. Their now all-gender restrooms served a dual purpose as a restroom and as a storage room. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I've been here a number of times and it's a decent place to grab a bite and usually not too busy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We came on a Saturday evening and found parking on the street a couple doors down from the restaurant. We were greeted upon entering and we mentioned our reservation at 6pm then were quickly seated. We specifically asked for water without ice but were given water with ice. The edamame was complimentary but was overly salted in my opinion. I'd prefer it without salt and have the option to add salt myself. One of the miso soups did not include any tofu but plenty of seaweed and green onions which was disappointing. We ordered the royal roll and this included blue fin toro, spicy tuna, avocado, ponzu sauce, and jalapeño, which added a nice kick to it. This was easily my favorite dish we ordered. We also had a coupon for a free deep fried salmon roll that was delicious. For entrees, I ordered the unagi beef bowl but received just the unagi bowl. They offered to remake it but since I was hungry and didn't want to wait, I decided to keep it. Although the dish itself was tasty, there was a lot of rice and only 3 pieces of broccoli. I wished there was a bit more unagi and broccoli for a more balanced proportion. The spiral bowl consisted of chicken karaage, BBQ pork, and prawn with udon. This was mediocre as the BBQ pork was still cold and the broth was too peppery for my liking. For this, we asked what vegetables are included because the picture on the menu showed some corn and the server confirmed there would be corn, but there was no corn to be found in the dish. We also ordered the bento box with 3 items - salmon teriyaki, chicken cutlet/katsu, and tempura (shrimp & vegetables); this was pretty good. The dishes were fine but nothing to write home about. There are plenty of parking spots outside and around this restaurant. We got to this restaurant around 2:30 and they close at 3:00. The friendly, kind waitress greeted and seated us right away. She told us that we can stay and enjoy our food even after they close. They have an extensive menu. We ordered the spiral ramen, curry pork cutlet, and the salmon, teriyaki chicken bento box. The waitress gave us complimentary edamame while we were waiting for our food, which we liked very much. Our food came out in a timely manner. The teriyaki chicken and salmon weren't dry. The teriyaki chicken was tender and juicy. The curry pork cutlet was tender and tasty. We really liked the potatos and carrots that were on top of the pork cutlet. The spiral ramen had chicken karaage, pork , egg, shrimp, fish cakes, bean sprouts, seaweed, and green onion. The pork and the broth were flavorful. They gave us generous portions and the prices are fairly reasonable. We really enjoyed the food and the service. We will definitely come back to try their other entrees. read more

Went here for their HH which offers 40% off several items. Food was very mediocre and honestly, quite disappointing. The edamame (not pictured) was soggy and overly salty - tasted old. Nearly all the HH sushi rolls had a lot of rice and barely any filling - at most some artificial crab meat drenched in sauce. Squid was bland and rubbery, the worst was the sashimi - we got tuna sashimi and it came out bright pink. I've never seen a bright pink tuna sashimi before and thought they had added food coloring. It was very questionable but we didn't get any stomach issues after. The oysters were pretty good though, maybe the best thing we had. Service was very slow - they only had 1 sushi chef and 1 waitress. When the bill came they added tax onto the prediscounted price, not the subtotal after 40% off. Shady, but it is what it is. I remember coming here for my mom's lunch break when I was little. It looks like the place hasn't changed much. I did notice that they were not as busy, and a lot of people were looking to go to the place next door. The place was decent. The lady who took my order was a little rude. They weren't busy yet she gave me that look, like I was bothering her. We ordered: 1. Bento box - beef teriyaki and chicken katsu. It wasn't bad. It hit the spot for the beef teriyaki craving. 2. Bento box - beef teriyaki, chicken karaage, and tempura. It was pretty basic at best. Overall, the place itself was ok, but a little pricey. I don't really see myself coming back here anytime soon. Came here for lunch with some coworkers and was glad they could sit a large party on such a sort notice. The space isn't large and so we were sat in the back area by the bathrooms. I kept my order simple, bento box with salmon teriyaki and mixed tempura. The bento box automatically comes with miso soup to start and the salad is included in the box. The salmon teriyaki was good. I like how their teriyaki sauce is thick. The mixed tempura came with 2 prawns and mixed veggies. Which I liked because some places try to be skimpy with the prawns. This place is fabulous, the sushi chef is talented and the staff are very nice. I recommend the Royal sushi roll. It is the one pictured in the bottom. It is torro with a jalepeno on top, and he must hit it with a blow torch because it has a bit of chargrill flavor. We also had the Lion King and Dragon rolls that we also amazing and pictured!! So this used to be our go to spot for ages. At one point the price when up and the portion went down so we stopped going. Then COVID hit and we didn't go anywhere. But finally we decide after all these years. I was nervous cuz we loved it so much. We ordered tonkatsu curry; beef teriyaki and tempura bento box; and salmon sashimi, chicken karaage, and tempura bento. Wow! It did not disappoint! I'm hoping the owners realized that changing prices and portions is not a good thing. This is one of those reviews that you love to give but hope not everyone will show up on the day you do and it's too crowded and the prices have gone up. Salmon sashimi, chicken karaage, and tempura bento, 5/5: Nice thick pieces of fatty salmon. Yum! The chicken kaarage has a light rice batter that makes the chicken crisp on the outside and tender. They usually serve it with the teriyaki sauce on it but sometimes that smothers it so I always ask for it on the side. The tempura is always good because the batter is light. Beef teriyaki and tempura, 5/5: The beef was surprisingly tender and not that cheap chewy type of beef. It was actually two layers of beef! What a nice surprise! Again the tempura was great because the batter was light. Curry tonkatsu rice plate 3/5: The hubs ordered this and this was his rating. Sorry I didn't try it cuz I'm not a huge curry fan unless it's Steph Curry! He said it was average and nothing special. It was a decent size tonkatsu though! So why the 5 stars? I've always loved this place and given inflation the price point is great. Oh, did I mention they had a special of $1 for a piece of nigiri! Yum! I had 4 pieces of unagi for $4! This is definitely one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the bay area. Their teriyaki sauce is savory with a hint of sweetness and the chicken is always cooked perfectly. Went to Spiral on Saturday for a birthday dinner. Reservations made for the 10 of us, but there were still quite a few tables available. Service was very friendly, attentive, and they checked on us often. Many ordered the bento boxes. Got to try the Salmon teriyaki in which the fish was moist and just enough teriyaki sauce. It was good. Only complaint I saw with the bentos was that the salad appeared to be drowning in the dressing. Maybe little less dressing and it would be better. Some ordered ramen and I got to try the broth which I found quite flavorful. I ordered the Pork Cutlet curry, which I quite liked. Only thing is I wish is that the curry didn't cover the cutlet completely as I like the crispiness of the cutlet. A lot of rice, potatoes and carrots. It was flavorful. To be honest, I never thought I'd be writing this. Typically, if I have a sub-par experience at one of a restaurant's locations, it won't necessarily rule out whether I check out another. Different cooks, different staff...different everything. However, after my handful of trips to the Spiral in Daly City, I never thought I'd end up coming here, let alone multiple times. I mean, it's not like they're all that unique; for better or worse, they're like Exhibit A of your average Japanese restaurant. Been to one, been to them all. Yet, despite all of that, I still couldn't say not to coming here...and then coming back again to have a second dish to write about. What can I say - it's all for the sake of Yelp...ha! Now, compared to its sister location, this Spiral has more of a homely feel to it (it's on a neighborhood street versus a strip mall, for one), but the menu is all too familiar - tons of apps, sashimi, sushi rolls, ramen, udon, bento boxes, and entrees to choose from. Having only had their hot dishes, I normally would've waited on posting this until after trying their sushi/sashimi, but the few pieces I tried from my friend's plate was good enough (both rolls were just okay - decently fresh fish, but the rice was pretty "meh"). Sure, including them would've been nice, but they wouldn't have changed the rating (if anything, it might have brought it down). -- BENTO BOX COMBINATION - Saba Shioyaki, Pork Katsu, Chicken Karaage...$15 The offerings aren't unique, but the price is friendly (most bentos seem to go for more nowadays). The saba shioyaki was mediocre (not very salted), but the karaage was decent (juicy, though not wasn't as flavorful as I had hoped) and I liked the katsu (crispy, moist). -- GYU-DON - Beef, Onions, and Vermicelli Noodles over Rice...~$10 I was hopeful, given how my friend's donburi looked, but this was nothing like the real deal. The portion was nice, but rather than simmered down (think sukiyaki), this was more stir-fried. What's more, the beef was really dry and there was barely any sauce. In the interest of being completely fair though, based on a couple of other reviews, it seems as though Spiral may have new owners (and/or a new menu), so it's quite possible this may not be as relevant anymore. That being said, I'm also not sure if the change is a good or bad thing, as my second visit here wasn't as good as the first and came around when all of these changes may have happened. If that's the case, I guess all of this may not matter since this page will get replaced with a new one. Which just means I'll be back to visit whatever the new place may be. Whenever I'm feeling super lazy, and I have a craving for affordable pork tonkatsu and beef teriyaki, this place checks a box. There bento box meal comes in two options. Your choice of 2 items ($13) or 3 items ($15). They got all the basics you'll typically find like chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, chicken Katsu, pork katsu, tempura, etc. Each bento, they give you a decent amount of food. It comes with rice, salad w/miso dressing, and miso soup. On my to-go order, they served the beef without the teriyaki sauce, but gave the sauce in a packet for me to pour myself. Kinda weird IMO, and the beef was a bit overdone and on the dry side. The pork katsu, was standard, very thin breading and light on the pork. Again, was it blow your mind good, no, but it's decent enough to fill a stomach. This is the type of place that I go to check a box, and feeling extremely lazy. Not a spot I'd go out of my way for, but due to the proximity to my house is why I come here from time to time. If you dine in, and it's cold outside, be sure to bring a jacket because it's freezing in there. This is our 3 time coming here. We took advantage of the happy hour. We ordered a couple of their sushi's. Special California Roll, and the Futomaki. Everything was cooked. Nothing raw for us. I also ordered the House Special Died Noodles. This is by far, my favorite noodle. My husband ordered a bento box with 3 items (Beef teriyaki, chicken karage and tempura.) Omg. It was huge. My mother ordered only 2 items (salmon teriyaki and chicken teriyaki)and it was a lot. So much that she had some leftovers for lunch the next day. The finished her salad though. It was very good according to her.. The service is not bad considering there was only 1 waitresses who was doing everything. Never tried Spiral. My sister decided to do a family meal pickup near her home and use spiral as the restaurant of choice for takeout this time. Every few Sundays our family rotates a takeout pickup at my parent's driveway if we do not choose to do a potluck pickup and go instead. I ordered curry Pork katsu over rice, a bbq pork noodle soup, and a salmon sashimi and mixed tempura bento box. My favorite was the katsu curry ! I will have leftovers for tomorrow. The price is reasonable at $12. The bbq pork noodle soup was difficult to eat for takeout. The noodles were stuck together and some noodles were even fused into chunks that I could not loosen. Even when I reboiled the soup and placed the noodles into the reheated broth the noodles would not loosen. The pork was tender however and I love the seaweed, and egg with my salvaged loosened noodles. It's hard to package soup noodles for takeout I'm sure. The mixed tempura were limp by the time I picked up my order and so I put in in my air fryer and they were crisp and revived. The salmon sashimi was fresh and lots of it. This place is good but you will need to revive your food when you get it home if you order tempura or fried items and if you order soup noodles you may need to revive these too in the broth at home over the stove. Pregnant lady here on a friday night. It's me-time while hubby is on a raid with his game, hence table for one. Ordered the lion ling roll and tiger bomb. As long as the sushi is cooked, i'm cleared to eat it. Gotta say that tiger bomb hits the spot. Eating deep fried roll and a baked roll has the best of both worlds. The only reason i rated three stars is because of their customer service. I've been here twice so far so im unsure what the norm vibe is. It feels awkward when the staff shows you your table. And then forget about you. As she welcomed the next customer, asked which drinks to request and then gave them menus. (I'm a table away). I think im a a bit bothered because last time, the staff that welcomed me then left to go outside to see a friend (?). Had to wait a good 10 mins. The rest of the staff are inside the kitchen. Wish the rest of the staff work together and have customers get settled in the meantime. The food here is very fresh and service was great! It's a small restaurant but the decor is nice and gives a very welcoming feel. The sashimi platter was delicious! Apparently the tuna is blue fin tuna from Spain, and the texture was amazing. We also tried a series of rolls and an udon. The udon was slightly salty, but the rolls were innovative and fresh. We came during happy hour and it was busy with only one waitress. It took awhile to get our food which was good but my salad came when we had finished our food and was ready to pay. No biggie so we took it home but what made me give such a low rating is the mandatory tip imposed on our bill. There was only three of us so there shouldn't be a tip that they would include in the bill. Our total was $199 plus the $56 tip the waitress added on. She said it was mandatory to include the tip and it is based off regular price not the early bird discount. What a rip! We had no choice but to pay that as we didn't have cash so our credit card had to be rung up at $255. I will never patronize them again for that policy. I have never been to any restaurant that has not only imposed a tip for three people but also for putting the tip off regular price. The staff are all nice people but the waitress shouldn't have charged that $56 tip when service was not that good and based it on regular price of food. read more

The food here is decent for what you pay for, so there isn't a lot of complaints there. However, the service was terrible and is the main reason for the one star rating. The server we has hovered us while we were eating. Normally, they ask how the food is or if we wanted extra water (etc, etc), but she literally just stood there. She had the tendency to walk around the restaurant but not say anything to customers but stare. She also rudely picked up empty dishes in front of us as we finished eating. She inserted herself while I was leaning over the plate talking to my friend without even saying excuse me. It was like she was rushing us out. Finally, I didn't even finish getting my tip ready and the server saw my tip line crossed out on my receipt and lifted it up badgering me, "Where's the tip? There's no tip here." But I crossed it out on the receipt because I was preparing my tip in cash. She was extremely disrespectful, impatient, and very rude. We felt so terrible leaving here. Excellent service & delicious ramen! Need I say more? My cousin and her husband took me to spiral Japanese restaurant for lunch. Since I had just completed some dental work I wanted something easy on the teeth. Ramen sounded like a good idea. Spiral Japanese restaurant offers a wide assortment of Japanese dishes as well as sushi and Ramen. We all had the charsiu ramen which came with a bowl of fried rice. They were both absolutely delicious. The fried rice had little pieces of chicken in it and I was so pleasantly surprised find it so good. Shortly afterwards they brought our char siu ramen which was equally delicious the char siu was slightly sweet, noodles perfectly cooked and broth well seasoned and just plain perfect! All reasonably priced at $9 for the combo. Definitely a great place. read more
