They use a kind of chili oil seasoning that's hot and makes your lips and tongue tingle, but in a pleasant way, not the painful kind of lingering heat that you'll find in other restaurants. The Wontons in Chili Oil are so delicious, as was the pork belly we had on a previous visit. We also loved the Braised Beef Noodle Soup. I found the Xinjiang Style Beef slices too gingery for my taste, but it was good, and the beef was tender. Be careful with the "Traditional Cold Chicken in Chili Oil" -- it tastes amazing, but the chicken is full of tiny bones. I don't recommend the hot and sour soup, which is ordinary, a bit too gelatinous, and not as good as you'd get at other Chinese restaurants. But overall, excellent. The lighting is well integrated as it echoed the round tables in the center of the space and the simple dining bar is the feature focal point. This restaurant specializes in the Szechuan peppercorn application with milder effect than some of the well known counterparts in Chinatown. The bill was a little high and reflected the demand on the space which was rather popular. The staff was friendly and attentive, low pressure, and helpful. Ranked from best to least best (since everything was good) we got: Spicy Braised Pork Ribs Hand Pull Noodle Soup, Mapo Tofu, Cucumber Salad, and Fish Filet with Chili Oil Soup with the live fish. The restaurant is small so I would suggest getting there early to get on the waitlist. I like to check out the local supermarkets or getting boba while I wait. There are many spicy dishes, cold dishes as well as warm soups. Can't go wrong here! Third time coming. First two times were solid. Can recommend the veggie and beef hand pulled noodles. Came during lunch, so it wasn't too busy. Third time was a bit weird, but ok. I was excited to share with a few friends - but their experiences weren't the best. They sat a table in front of us even though we were first in queue and had been waiting 30 minutes while they just walked in. We ordered a mix of dishes, including a few classics, which I don't recommend. A vegetarian friend was excited to try general tso's tofu since he's never seen it before. It was not good at all. Soooooo sweet and they definitely used their orange sauce. None of us could have more than one bite. My other friend ordered spicy beef lo mein and it came out 40 minutes after ordering. There were 5 tables after us who all received their dishes before he did. And it was very light on the beef and rather dry. The menu is HUGE with tons of Szechuan options and everything is so flavorful! The Spicy Beef Brisket Hand Pulled Noodle Soup is seriously the best I've had in Chicago - and trust me, I've tried a lot of places. They actually give you a massive portion with lots of noodles instead of being stingy like other spots. But honestly everything here is fire. The pork belly appetizer was unreal - best I've ever had, period. The cucumber salad and eggplant were so fresh and packed with flavor. And the sweet skinned duck??
