Was looking for a Chinese restaurant with good reviews and settled on Young Can Wok. It did not disappoint at all and perhaps it was better than expected. First of all I love dumplings, so starting off with pork dumplings was no brainer. They were good too, but perhaps a little small. Then came the order of fried noodles with chicken. I have never had fried noodles before, and at first I was disappointed as they were hard-like eating Ramen noodles without cooking!!! Turns out that once you steal the chicken and sauce they loosen up and are tasty. My server was not best with her English and I was just clueless as to how to eat the noodles, so it took a while to figure it out!!! Fried rice was fresh and great! In fact it was the best fried rice I had and so was the sesame chicken. After my recent experience, my review/rating screams the need for an update of Young Can Wok. Bumped easily to a 4.0 star. A clean, well-established, well-oiled machine of a Chinese restaurant -- churning out a steady stream of customers all day long. Mind you, 98% are Caucasian. What does that mean? A "PF Changs", in a way. Good and a safe choice, but not strong or pungent flavors. I went once and was not impressed, another time and not again. But the 3rd time is the charm. Delish! But look at me, I'm white as can be. It's a neighborhoody place. Calvin, I presume the owner, is very hospitable and knows most customers by name -- he is the star here. There's another server (or two), but he, by far, is the terrific one. The other positive factor of YCW: good value, large portions for the price. Great things to order: ================= * Basil Garlic Eggplant [$13.95, 5.0 stars] -- Sauteed with onions and fresh basil in house special sauce. I love this. * Broadway Fried Rice w/Shrimp [$14.00, 4.5 stars] -- Mixed with eggs, soy beans and scallions. The shrimp taste was so clean and outstanding! Less good: ========= * Eggplant in Spicy Garlic sauce [$13.95, 3.5 stars] -- uneventful, again, and blah sauce. Wasn't spicy at all. They have 2 eggplant dishes, so I asked which one was better. Ugh, the other one. * Double Pan-fried noodles with Beef [$14.95, 3.5 stars] -- absolutely freshest of noodles, veggies, and meat. Yet, but absolutely no flavor at all. Add a little sauce for Buddha's sake (not sahhhhhkey). * Broadway Fried Rice with Pork [$12.50, 3.5 stars] -- again, they proved to me that they "under season" everything. Also, not enough pork pieces. What I did have, was good for that item. * Cold, Unfiltered Sake [$7.95, 3.5 stars] -- was unnamed and was fine, but served in the 4.5 oz small pitcher...$2 too much. For me, don't skimp on this! One is not enough! Average: ======= * Pumpkin Prawns [$18.50, 3.0 stars] -- larger than the norm shrimp (alas, "prawns"), no tail, fried extra crisp, candied walnuts, and "pumpkin" (also fried), broke up the monotony with the shrimp and glaze, but not enough wow in any category of good to order again...and too much gluttony -- it's all fried with the sweet mayo glaze. My boyfriend went for lunch today by himself. He often go there for lunch by himself and also with company lunch meeting but this is the first time he noticed an automatic 20% service charge for 1 person dining?? Yet, there are still tip option on the signature receipt. We like the food but won't be returning. We understand the cost to run the business is increasing but the surprise charge left us felt negative. I would encourage to reconsider their menu pricing. Looking for Chinese food that is Gluten free is almost impossible. Sometimes you have to roll the dice and hope they understand the restrictions... not at Young Can Wok! Very knowledgeable people and really walked us through the options. We got: Mongolian beef, Eggplant in spicy garlic sauce, Singapore street noodles... and Non GF General Chicken for just me! They immediately let us know they were closing at 3:00... no problem, I had already pre selected my order.. Pumpkin shrimp with candied walnuts was delicious $16 Fried rice with BBQ Pork was ok.. I went inside to pick up and the women whom I assumed is the owner because I've eaten there a few times and her and her husband I believe are in charge have been nice when I'm in there to eat. But last time I called in to pick up she was rude and gave me attitude for asking for some sauce which came with the scallion pancakes, which by the way were just drenched in oil...the oil was at the bottom of the container in a puddle. I could not eat them. So, I thought the attitude was rude I was given and also there was a hair in my chow fun. I will not be back again. Well we go there to eat a lot from the beginning, these people have not been very friendly, I believe It's the wife and husband that run the dining room. She never smiles that's ok we're not there to make friends. We're there for the food tonight we went there for dinner she came over as usual no smile just to take our order, we order two dishes, she then came back to ask us if we wanted walnuts, my wife said sure when she brought out the dish, it was the wrong meal, we told her right then and there it's the wrong meal. She said well you wanted walnuts and she walked away. She came back later asked us how it was. We told her again this is not what we order. She said well that's what you ordered. No customer service on her part at all we left the meal and did not eat it. Classic food items like chow fun, fried rice, general tsao chicken, orange chicken, and wontons are really great. No fuss no muss. Just fresh and tasty. I also really like their calamari for an appetizer. The space is on the small side but they take Reservas1 I highly recommend it for a big group. The staff is super nice. I have pretty high standards when it comes to Asian Cuisine. I was very impressed with the food and service, both exceeded my expectations! I am both gluten free and dairy free. I called and spoke to a gentleman and he said he can modify any dish to meet my dietary restrictions, except for deep fried dishes. I ordered the sizzling seafood plate, mu shu duck, deluxe vegetables, and Shanghai street rice noodles. I loved the mu shu duck because it actually had a lot of pieces of duck and it was well flavored. The Shanghai noodles we're not too greasy and had a very unique flavor. I enjoyed both the sizzling seafood, the seafood was cooked to perfection which is rare because frequently had other restaurants I find them to be overcooked. I've been going to this place for about a decade. I can count on 1 finger the number of times I've had a less than stellar meal here in the last 10 years. We've made it a tradition to go here every Christmas Eve as well. This is what I'd consider high quality Americanized Chinese food. I'm talking, white meat chicken, leanish meat, loads of veggies and nice mix of spicy, sweet, sour flavored sauces. All of the standards are really good- but I always order the mandarin eggplant with shrimp and chicken, chicken chowmein, fried rice and egg rolls. Both takeout and dinning options are delicious. Stopped by for lunch on a holiday. Found parking right outside the restaurant but parking normally isn't too tight on a regular day. My impression is that Young Can Wok uses traditional Chinese cooking principles to create Americanized Chinese food (such as Orange Chicken). It ended up tasting like gourmet Panda Express at a price premium. And the food was very tasty overall; here's a rundown of each dish I tried: Shanghai Dumpling (xiao long bao): Very solid. Tender dough, tender meat, good flavor. Above average for xiao long bao I've tried in my life. Some xiao long bao's I've had in the past have thin dough that tears apart if you so much as glare at it too hard, but no issue with that here. Each dumpling sits in a small aluminum cup, which eliminates the need for scooping each dumpling into a porcelain spoon like normal and suffering broth-spillage in transit. Harvest Spring Rolls (4 pcs): This dish was heartbreaking because the exterior was crispy and fried to PERFECTION, but had a disappointing mushy, flavorless filling. As a crunch-head, the crunchy bite was truly texture-perfection but the taste was just so boring. Scallion Pancakes: Very simple no-frills scallion pancake. It's NOT the thicker, spiral-wrapped dough pancake you find at some Chinese restaurants though. See the attached picture. Pumpkin Prawns with Candied Walnuts: The coconut curry flavored sauce was excellent. The thick fried batter provided an excellent crisp amidst the wet sauce. This dish was delicious. Orange Peel Chicken: Great take on a classic dish. The orange flavor was actually noticeable, but I wish the batter was crunchier like the prawn dish above. Overall the food was delicious but the service wasn't too welcoming. At several points, different waitresses responded irritably to our questions. They didn't do anything explicitly horrible, but they were unfriendly enough to be noticeable. At one point, I saw a visible scowl after hailing a waitress mid-walk between tables to ask for more water. ****NOTE TO PARTIES of 5+: They charge an 18% service fee for parties of 5 or greater. I normally see this with parties of 6 but I guess this restaurant draws the line at 5. This was a disappointing surprise. For this reason and the service, I'd give this restaurant 3.5 stars, even though I'd consider the food slightly above 4 stars. Because Yelp won't allow that, the tiebreaker resides in the less-than-friendly service experience, pushing it down to a 3. read more

Good for Chinese food. I'm usually picky about Chinese food and hate the greasiness of it, but this place suffices. My boyfriend and I came in around 2PM on a Tuesday and thought we made it on time for the lunch special. But when I asked the waitress, I guess they only honor it until 12PM? Never really heard of that, but it's fine. So we just settled to order them A La Carté. We ordered the Mongolian Beef and the Orange Chicken with a side of white rice. The dishes were both great, none of them were too greasy; I especially loved their Beef because of how tender it was with the caramelized onions. I also really like how the inside of this restaurant is very well-kept and renovated. Everything looked clean and new, including the water glasses & the chopsticks! Honestly I don't really like dining at some Chinese restaurants because of how dirty and run-down they are. But Young Can Wok's is a huuge step up! We ended up paying about $40 including 15% tip, which I find outrageously pricey. I have to remember that this is Burlingame located, so that may be a given. But still, dang. I'd see myself coming back more if the Lunch Special deals didn't end so freaking early. read more

Lucked out and found street parking on Broadway (typically spots are always all taken). Service was very timely, though on the colder side. Our group of 5 was seated immediately. Appreciate that when we asked for a couple waters without ice, our waitress remembered (often servers don't remember smaller details like that). For appetizers we ordered the scallion pancake, xiao long bao and spring rolls. Took my friend from Shanghai here and she approved of their xiao long bao! The scallion pancake was perfectly crispy. The spring roll crunch was great as well but the filling was lacking in flavor. I ordered the orange chicken which was just the right texture of crispy on the outside, not soggy or too soaked by the orange sauce and tender on the inside. My friend ordered the pumpkin prawns with candied walnuts. The tempura pumpkin was a "delightful surprise" with the prawns which were cooked perfectly.
