It's been a long time since my last visit. I used to dine here often when I worked in the area, so it felt nostalgic coming back. This time, I happened to be getting my car serviced nearby, which worked out perfectly because soup for breakfast just sounded right. We arrived around 9am and noticed the menu has changed. We ordered the beef rib soup and the beef flank soup. The first sip of broth was heavenly -- rich, comforting, and exactly what I remembered. The first bite of kkakdugi was just as satisfying. We loaded up our bowls with sliced green onions, added touch of salt, drizzle of kimchee juice and happily slurped. Service was friendly and attentive as always. When we asked for more kkakdugi, the waitress smiled and said it's everyone's favorite and we can see why. So glad to know this spot still delivers that same comforting bowl of soup with kkagduki. read more

Haven't had this in many years, but got some yesterday to go for dinner. Quiet at ~4pm, before dinner time I guess. A bit hard to see while driving north on Beach Blvd, but has it's own parking lot. Just turn Right when you see the Stance Fitness sign, since the restaurant itself just suddenly appears before that sign. Heated up at home later and it was very clean and healthy broth.(broth comes pure, for you to add salt to your liking) Perfectly comforting for the colder temps now. And there was quite a lot of meat in the soup! (don't see much since they are sitting on the bottom) I specifically got the Reduced Fat Ox Bone Soup version for the clearer broth. Was a bit confused whether it had any beef in it vs. the one above on the menu that is with brisket. Lady said it has yangji in Korean, which I wasn't sure what cut it was but. It ended up being a lean beef that was so tender it melts in your mouth, it was fantastic! I guess the lean beef compliments the reduced fat/clearer broth for a healthier meal. Where as the brisket version above that will have the even more delicious briskets with some fat for max enjoyment, I guess. Either way, the clearer broth impressed even my wife who doesn't like regular Sullungtang, so it's that clean tasting. My boy also loved it. 2 orders fed us 3:) And the awesome radish kimchi, of course a match made in heaven with the soup. If you're craving sulungtang from when they made it before the 80s, this is the place to go. Parking is in the back. The interior decor isn't fancy and everything is simple. The sulungtang broth is clear and comes with kimchi/radish side dishes which are delicious. Green onion is plentiful and if kimchi juice is provided to add to the sulungtang broth. This place makes me feel at home with my relatives. Get takeout or eat there! read more

A friend of mine took me to Young Dong Restaurant and I was fully impressed. To start, we were a bit late and yet we were greeting by a very hospitable host. The dish of the evening was what my buddy wanted me to try. Seolleongtang with beef cheek. My friend was not kidding when he said you'll like this. Adding black pepper, bit of salt and lots of green onion, provided a flavor that was so comforting. The beef cheek was dipped in a sauce with jalapeños, a form of horseradish and soy, to complement the tender/melt in your mouth experience. The broth was excellent as well. Their sides of kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) were tasty as well. This is one place I could see myself going back again, and especially on a cold evening. I grew up ordering togo here with my parents, usually on quiet weekends when there wasn't anything particularly special planned. My parents are no longer here, so these days I usually order takeout whenever I'm missing them. Every time I drive by this place, it feels like a small piece of my childhood is still waiting inside with my parents. The restaurant has remained remarkably unchanged over the years, and honestly, I'm grateful for that. One thing I always appreciated about their soups is how clean and comforting they are. A lot of seolleongtang places can be overly rich or greasy, but my parents, who never liked heavy broths, always loved the seolleongtang and doganitang here because they felt light, soothing, and easy to enjoy. Even as my tastes have changed over the years, these soups have never lost their appeal. I know older generations will naturally appreciate a place like this, but I'd also strongly recommend it to younger people who enjoy a clear, delicate, and deeply comforting bowl of soup rather than something overwhelmingly heavy. And now that I'm a little older myself, my favorite part of coming here is pairing that hot bowl of soup with a bottle of soju. If you're Korean, I probably don't need to explain why. I came and had their sul lung tang and it was pretty good. The broth was good and meat was soft. Everything was seasoned so well. I really liked how they gave a dipping sauce with jalapeños. Definitely added some more flavor to the dish. They have spacious seats inside. I took off one star because of the service. We went on a Sunday evening and it was empty which was sad to see because the food and service here is so good! I wonder if it's because it's kind of separated from the heart of Koreatown next to dusty old shops but don't let that stop you! The Korean lady who welcomed us in was so friendly and accommodating and generous with the kimchi, green onions, and rice and even let us know to don't be shy to ask for more. We all got the seollangtang, of course, and oh man, that first slurp really hit the spot! You could tell the broth had simmered for a long time to really draw out the depths of the oxtail beef flavor. It was also packed with delicious brisket and noodles. Got the Ox Beef Brisket soup and Beef Rib soup. Both were really good! Like a lot of Korean soup places, it's add your own salt and green onions. One of the things that was more stand out for me was their barley tea. It was the perfect amount of strength without being bitter. I drank multiple cups and almost wanted to take it home! Bon chon was two dishes (kimchi and picked radish) and then a dipping sauce. It was pretty quiet when I went around closing (8pm-ish), but a nice place to catchup and chat because it was so quiet. Came here on the Monday after New Years as most restaurants were closed for the holidays and Young Dong was still open. The waitress brought over our warm barley teas right after we sat down. It was perfect for the cold weather. Loved how the menu was short and simple and straight to the point. I was extremely excited to see that gomtang was on the menu because I don't really see restaurants that make and sell gomtang. The broth was very clean and delicious as well. Their kimchi's were very good. The seasoning was perfect and it was perfectly fermented as well. Their jjangachi (pickled veggie) sauce was mixed with some gyeoja (korean hot mustard) and it added the perfect kick to dip the meat from your soup. Definitely will come back again soon! read more

I love when restaurants have small menus (looking right at you, Cheesecake Factory. SMH). You know they do what they do well. Yelp, thank you for screwing up. I searched for soon tofu, and this place doesn't serve it. I opted for the spicy brisket veggie soup. Kinda like yukaejang minus the noodles. I am a foodie, so I LOVE that they give you the option to "have it your way". I added lots of green onions, a lil coarse salt, pepper. Then midway through I cut up my kimchee & put that in. Young Dong Restaurant (영동 설렁탕) is what we consider as the best Korean Soup (tang/guk) place we've tried way back when and still is to this day. We always come here after our long drive from Las Vegas, their soup dishes are absolute comfort food and warms the soul. Our usual server recognises us by now and she's always glad to see us back and is very attentive and accommodating with our requests. Sitting is easy for us as we usually drop in during weekdays and late in the morning after the breakfast crowd has left. We usually rotate our order choices from beef+tripe (Young Dong Special), beef cheek soup (meoli gogi seolleongtang), to mixed beef soup (섞어수육). But my all-time favorite is the ox knee soup with its generous cuts of tendon with the entire ox knee left in the wonderful broth! The broths doesn't need any additional seasoning but you can also garnish the soups with green onions, pepper flakes, sea salt and kimchi juice to your heart's content. Young Dong is a gem in Buena Park and we still haven't found an equivalent restaurant in our Vegas home town so long drives it is. read more

Absolutely loved this place. Normally we go to Korea town in la but this place was recommend to us by a family member. To start we had the banchans which were super generous portions meaning you did not need to ask for a refill given how much was given. They had kimchi and radish kimchi. Both were super crunchy and fresh and delicious! We ordered the beef brisket though next time I want to try the beef cheeks but it was so soft and literally melted in your mouth. My kids gobbled it up. If you are worried about the rich broth they have a no fat broth option but why??! Noodles are included in the broth and they are the white ones and not the clear ones which we prefer. On the side is the msg which you need a little to really enhance the flavor. They also bring out a huge tub of chopped green onions. Please use the communal tongs and go nuts on how you like it. I love it and added a lot for the crunch, smell and taste. Mix with msg, green onions and it's a hearty meal. Brisket, noodle and broth with a side of white fluffy rice. Our server was super nice and brought kiddie bowls of rice and broth complimentary. She even got us a plain bowl of noodles for the kids since they ate all of mine. Service was great and food was absolutely delicious. I can't wait to Come here again! What a solid sulungtang place! I usually go to another place a few blocks down, but this place might top it. It's unique that their soup is clear, as other reviews stated, because sulungtang is usually a little cloudy (broth made from bone). The soup was light and refreshing, even for something hot. I tried the beef without fat soup, which was good but I think the meat is a little thick for my liking. The chadol soup had the thinner meat, which I do prefer with sulungtang. But eating the meat with the dip was really good. Also according to my mom and brother, their kimchi is really good, both by itself and putting into the sulungtang. Will definitely be coming again, maybe for breakfast. A good craving for the chillier days. read more

The food here is fine and yummy! Your typical Korean sulungtang/galbitang restaurant. Just not the most friendly... Every time my party made requests, the waitress would give excuses and state reasons for not wanting to accommodate (and basically talking back the entire time). One person in my party wanted to order a specific menu item, and the waitress responded that our party wouldn't know how to eat it because the people in my party looked "too young." We were all in early to late 20s, with one couple being in their 40s. In any case, it felt like she was being condescending because we were young. But! One of my favorite sulungtang places of all time!! The sulungtang here is a little different in that the broth's not as creamy/milky as other places, but it's still really yummy I always get the sulungtang without fat (!!) which I've never seen at any other sulungtang. It doesn't taste greasy at all -- it's actually refreshing and savory!! Another plus is that the kimchi here is reaaally good so it goes perfectly w the sulungtang ^_^ and they have dipping sauce for your meat as well! They also serve green onion in a huge bowl so you can add however much as you want! There's also a little teapot that has kimchi juice that you can add to your broth if you want it spicier/more flavorful ~ Definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a yummy korean broth ^__^ I'm really surprised that this place isn't more popular!! Super simple menu just seullungtang and simple hearty peasant soups. Service isn't bad but the food isn't all that good either. Seullungtang broth tasted like water. There's no deep rich flavor of what seullungtang ordinarily contains. Noodle were super bloated and bowl of rice came unpleasantly ugly looking. The server didn't care about the looks of how the rice should be presented. So turn off! Beef brisket went that many. It was mostly bloated flour noodle. For the price sake it's kind of expensive. The food here is great! If it's cold and you're craving some sul lung tang, then by all means come here. BUT! There is one catch though, come here if you don't mind bad/rude service. The waitress lady that was serving my party, which was pretty big at about 15 people, was continuously saying rude jokes and speaking to us in a condescending manner. One thing the waitress said was that my party should probably not order a certain dish because we wouldn't know how to eat it. Our party's average age was in the late 20's with a couple in their 40's, and all of us are Korean with some of us having been born in Korea. Regardless of our age, in what world is it okay for someone in the service industry to talk like that to the customers (and no we hadn't done anything rude to make her mad as we had just sat, talked to each other, and started to order). On top of that she refused to accommodate for the party, not allowing us to put our tables together so that we can all sit together all because she didn't want us to. Needed some salty Korean soup after a horrible night of food poisoning. Decent sullungtang in the BP area. But nothing can beat hanbat sullungtang in LA... The broth was already pretty salty before my friend and I even put salt in the soup. My friend didn't realize until he put like 5 spoons of salt. I have been here several times when I wanted some warm soup nearby. What I like about here is their clear soup. Usually sullungtang is this white milky soup base, but here it is clear. It feels light and fresh. I always got the fat free version which helps my health as I am avoiding the fat that usually hangs off of the meat. The kimchi and radish is pretty good here as well. The only thing is the servers and the facility. They are not very welcoming and the place does not feel warm or pleasant. Just something about the environment doesn't make me want to go back very much. But it being a decent flavored hot soup and a good place nearby with good hours, I would give it a 3.5 but will up it to a 4. read more

Looking for the right restaurant on the road is a difficult task especially when I am in need of soup for my grueling stomach from drinking the night before and my alumni school is playing a basketball game. I came in to this restaurant to watch a game with a soup. Restaurant was busy with a one server who seems to be a owner who greets and politely tells me " I would be right with you soon". After few minutes when she came , I asked her if I can change a channel of the only TV and gladly helped right a way. I sat right in front of big screen and ate healthy comfy tasty soup and my team won the game. After a while later with all the busy errands in the restaurant she was personal and polite enough to ask me if my team was doing well. I seasoned the soup with salt, pepper, green onions, kimchi juice etc and it didn't help at all. The broth was clear compared to your typical creamy SLT broth. Tried this 8am opener for breakfast, Korean=garlicky, breakfast? I was game. First ones in and the lady wasn't sure if we knew where we were. She was nice took her time, as her English was limited. The menu was very limited and on the table. After looking I ordered the Spicy brisket and vegetable soup. She proceeded to fill the table with, Iced Barley tea, sauce dishes, ban chan-kimchee and Daikon kimchee, the large container of sliced green onions, and the "teapot" with kimchee soup/juice/sauce, and a dish of gook su noodles as my dish did not normally come with it. Expectations: bowl of soup, chunks of brisket, eat kimchee, drink iced tea for $9. Level: Rookie, at eating Korean breakfast like this. Reality: Got a large bowl, not completely filled with soup, a few strands of meat! (Clearly the translation should change) it should read "spicy(wasn't) vegetable soup with brisket garnish, doused bowl with green onions, ate kimchee, drank the tea, ate my rice. Okay now what? Review: for $9 breakfast had little protein, and mostly vegetables. I researched pics and looks like I needed to order the $16 breakfast for any Protein upgrades. Food was all nicely served but less than memorable. I really like the tub of green onions and teapot of kimchee juice. No Oxtail, Kalbi, bulgogi, etc but they did have a knee bone soup, which sounded interesting but passed on. Conclusion is my dish should be $6. Would I order it again here? No. Was the restaurant clean? Appeared so. In a stand alone building with ample parking. I would recon this place by coming when its busy and watching the food delivered. Was the banchan memorable? UPDATED 05-20-2008: Went back again and had the #8, spicy beef soup with vegetables. I really liked that. It kinda reminded me of yukgejang. I actually like this far better than the sullungtang here. The sullungtang here is not milky, it's just like a regular beef broth. That type of sullungtang doesn't do it for me like the milky kind. For the sullungtang it's 3 stars, but the spicy beef soup kicked it up to 4. ---------------------------------------- I've been wanting to try sul long tang for a long time now but didn't want to go on my own since this is something very specific and I was afraid I wouldn't know how to order it correctly. With a resident Korean speaker in tow, we proceeded to be initiated into the art of sul lung tang eating. Since it was my first try I wasn't sure which one to order. In the end, we got one chadol (brisket) and one oxtail and decided to just share that with lil guy. A huge plastic container of sliced scallions was brought out along with kimchi juice and a stainless steel container of regular kimchi and daikon kimchi. Before the sul lung tang even arrived, I had made a pretty decent dent in the kimchi. The hearty soups arrived in big bowls. The one with brisket had some noodles in it while the oxtail soup was only broth and oxtail. Since the soup isn't seasoned you have to add your own seasonings according to your own taste. I scooped some of it into a small bowl and added scallions, chili flakes and some sea salt to it. To this I also added a bit of kimchi juice. I liked it, though, I think I would've preferred it without the kimchi juice better. So, with the remaining stuff, I didn't put the kimchi juice in. Rice is provided. You can either put the rice into your soup for a rice soup or just eat it as an accompaniment. I did the latter. The soup did wonders because it was so cold outside, I felt so warm inside that it lulled me to sleep in the car as we were driving home. I'm definitely going to give other sul lung tang restaurants a try now to see if I like the milky version as well. This is certainly a wonderfully hearty food to eat during the winter months. read more
