Meat Jun chicken katsu combo
Gina H.

I always love coming here. The food is always fresh and delicious and the owner is always soo pleasant. Today I decided to try the chicken katsu and meat Jun combo. I must always order meat Jun but I wanted to know why everyone always orders the katsu. Now I understand, this is not your typical katsu. The chicken is marinated and then breaded!!!! You have to try it. The combo came with one piece of meat Jun and 2 big pieces of katsu. My go to will always be the meat Jun but I can recommend, the fish Jun and now the chicken katsu. The kalbi and bbq meat is always good too.

Thin sliced kal bee, meat jun, chicken katsu.

If the Hawaii style Korean BBQ plate lunch was a religion or a triple threat entertainer, this meal would be the Holy Trinity or Zendaya. I tried calling in the order in advance because always get long line at Young's, but the guy kept hanging up on me. It was like "hello...this Young's Kalbi...please hold"..."ok no problem", thud, pause, pause, beep, beep, click, robot lady voice "call ended". Huh?!? I called again and almost same thing but shorter this time "hello this Young's Kalbi"..."can I do a take-..." thud, pause, "uh hello..." click, auto lady voice "call ended." What da?!? I had to try one more time because now I had a thought bubble "the line must be crazy long today, they can't even stay on the phone." This one was the shortest "hello Young's-", thud, robot lady "call ended." Aw man now I gotta wait in the long line. And my friend had to rub salt in the wound, "I told you to call in the order yesterday." That was not helpful...you are not my friend right now...but...he was right...the truth hurts especially when it comes to one of my faves. It's been about 20-30 years of eating here and there's always a line for all these years. Long time customers know that Young's cares about quality control, consistent execution of their recipes and they care about their customers. The meat jun is thin sliced tender marinated beef with the slighty chewy eggy fried batter. The chicken katsu is a little different, but good kine different, because tastes like they marinate the chicken in their kalbi sauce before they fry it up crispy and then they give you kalbi sauce for katsu dipping delights (not the usual ketchup-based sauce). And their thin sliced kalbi (pronounced "kyle-bee" as my friend Miri, who speaks fluent Korean, reminded me so many times in her taunting voice"it's kyle-bee not kahl-bee...that's not even a Korean word"...sorry Eomma) was full flavored all the way through each bite of tender beef. When I make kyle-bee at home only the outside layer get flavor and the inside is kinda bland, but still comes out good, but my technique is not nearly as good as Young's marination technique. The portions were huge, I'm stuffed and we will fight for leftovers. I think I just had a weird, but delicious religious experience with a ethereal vision of Zendaya speaking in a robot voice saying "I hope you liked the kyle-bee", thud click "call ended."

Ordered take out from here with friends. Wow was I impressed. I always enjoy meat Jun and this place probably makes one of best on the island. As soon as you take that first bite you know you're in meat Jun heaven. Moist, tender and full of flavor. One thing that really upped my review was the home made kimchee. Bursting with flavor and made fresh. It just complimented the plate so well that I just had to give them 5 stars. Check them out. You won't be disappointed

This had to be our favorite mix plate while visiting on the island. Definitely a hole in the wall restaurant, no inside seating. Just order at the door, and wait for your order to be called. Wait wasn't too long. Meat Jun and Kalbi were very tender and flavorful. The plate was good enough to share for two of us. Very delicious. Definitely recommend this place while on the island. You will not be disappointed.

3.5 Stars Came here straight from the airport. They still have not reopened for in store dining. Since Covid they have been take out only. We knew it would be long so we called in our order. When we got there the parking lot was full and wait was long as many people had also called in their orders. The prices have increased, Meat jun and kalbi plate $26.40? Whew that inflation! I feel like other places are more reasonable. The meat Jun was thicker than I like. The kalbi was very tasty but the texture suggest they use baking soda to tenderize it and you don't get that same char on the meat. The meat jun had the same soft but gummy texture. I don't really care for that texture unless its in a stir fry. Inflated prices, no in store dining, off texture. I've found better places now.

I'll start my update with still the best meat jun in the world. Eggy meat jun with tasty soft meat that is unmatched anywhere else. Parking is pretty bad, $25 for one plate of meat jun, seems like they are always overwhelmed, but despite all of this, I still make this a must visit stop when visiting home. I heard some rumors about them retiring soon. Not sure what that means for the future of my delicious meat jun but I hope they can pass it on or something... fingers crossed till the next time I'm home.

This kalbi and the sauce is so good! I always want to try other dishes but I do like this one and it's so hefty. I always eat half and eat the other half later. This is my second time eating here and I got the same thing! :) Atmosphere - No frills kind of place, you come in and order and you eat elsewhere. There is no seating. Service - You put your order in it and that's it! Cost - To me, their prices are a bit higher than an average plate lunch place but I would say it's worth it for the taste of the food and the amount that you get. This was about $19/$20. Their menu is extensive so many options to choose from. Parking - There are other restaurants here so there is a parking lot. It gets REALLY busy especially around the lunch time so be aware. They even have a parking lot attendant to make sure that people are parking there for the stores in that plaza area. There's the parking area in front of it and next to it. It's free parking. Location - There's other restaurants nearby and sweet treats if you want as well. I would come back again because of the flavor of their kalbi and their meat jun sauce is delicious too!

Wanted to get some meat jun while we were here on vacation so decided to try this takeout only place. The meat jun was a bit sweet for my taste and kind of greasy however the fish jun was very good! The kalbee was tough. The barbecue chicken was very good as it was cooked well and had a nice char. The portions were good for the price and the veggie side dishes were a good compliment to the meat.

When a friend calls to ask if you want meat jun from young's you say hell yes. Why? Because Young's Kalbee has the best meat jun on the island in my opinion. I don't even need sauce with it. The big bone kalbee is also really good. Call in your order so you won't be waiting a while because it can get busy especially during peak lunch hour.

Young's Kalbee with their great reviews is legit! Their meat jun is the best we've had. Their kalbi is tender and tasty. It had a delicious char to them. Their veggies are also delish. The beef and chicken are all really tasty and tender. We ordered the Young's special and chicken and kalbi combo and chap chae. We loved their chap chae too. They are to go only. No dining in. You order at the door. The lady is friendly and provided good service with smiles and warmth. They do get busy with phone orders. Price point is high but with the quality of food, it's worth it. Generous portions so one order can be shared. They are located in Aiea, parking available. Check Yelp for hours. This is definitely one of our favorite Korean restaurants. Must try if you're in the area. Ambiance is mom and pops type, door order and no dine in.

My niece suggested we get Kalbi here for a party a few months ago. It was great! My friend went down, prepaid, day of the party I went to pick up and ordered veggies. It was quick and reasonable. Everyone commented on how good the Kalbi was.

My favorite Korean place for meatjun, mandoo & sauce! This place is nostalgic and always great quality. They only do takeout and are closed Monday and Tuesdays. Call and order ahead of time, usually takes like 15 mins or so. Meatjun: Always with a thick, soft slice of beef and perf amount of egg Mandoo: they make it with a thicker dough style which I grew up on and LOVE! Order takeout and support this local business!!

IMO... JUST OKAY. 3 1/2 star. I was told this was THE place for Korean bbq in the area so here we go! We went on a Saturday for a dinner pick up. Short line but 30 minute wait. The regulars do phone orders so if you plan to come here, call in your order. Our plates looked and smelled delicious. We just couldn't wait to eat! I had the fish Jun. When I started, I thought it was juicy and the red dipping sauce was tasty. After a while, the greasiness got to me. My friend liked the meat jun but didn't care for the chicken Katsu. There was more breading than chicken. And no Katsu sauce??? As for the sides, you don't get to choose. I really like the potatoes at most Korean bbq which is not an option here. $20 a plate. Standard. But I dunno. To me, it was just okay. Will I return? Not sure.

Is there lots of parking?

Yes. It's a shared lot with other stores. But you should be able to find a stall.

I am not seeing a family menu or a catering menu as recc from fellow yelpers to look at the posted menus? Does anyone have it?

They don't have pans for catering BUT, if you ask her over the phone, she'll say yes!! And then charge you for multiple side orders! It has happened to me and didn't know it until I picked up my order--in which case, I would've just paid the extra… Read more

We were given a regular menu and a single sheet with Lunch Combos. Three of us decided upon a two choice lunch combo with different choices. One wanted cold noodles. Our jaws literally dropped in awe as the first plate arrived with vegetable tempura and bbq pork. It was humongous!!! My meat Jun and zucchini was pretty huge as well. The person who ordered kalbi with another choice paid $3+ extra for the kalbi selection. We all remarked how delicious our meals were and we all took left overs home. The servers are friendly, refill your water and don't chase you out after you paid the bill. We hadn't all met together since Covid so we had lots to catch up on. You will need to ask for a key to use the outside restroom. The interior furniture and menus show they've been in use for quite some time. If you don't mind that, the food alone is worth coming for or you could order take out.

Very affordable price especially given the huge size! The veggie in the tempura seemed to be more raw so it wasn't our favorite. The tonkatsu was interesting as it was very thin. The meat jun and mandoo were good. Banchan and a small bowl of seaweed soup is included! They were busy but service was fast and great! Small cute local restaurant vibes.

The meat is reasonably high quality, the banchan is generous (the last few times I went they even had poke as a banchan included with the meal), and the service is friendly. The "kimchee soup" is one of my favorite kimchee jjigaes on the island. Refills of meat flow generously out of the kitchen, unlike some other AYCE experiences where each subsequent order gets smaller and smaller until they finally cut you off because you've reached the time limit. I only have one gripe. While each table has a very powerful burner for grilling the meat, their universal approach is to prop up a tilted cast iron plate over the fire to grill on. It's propped at an angle so that the oil flows into a catch pan on the side. This usually means that the half of the plate tilted closer to the fire gets really hot, while the other half struggles to get hot enough and risks just boiling your meat. It also makes adjusting the fire a tricky process - if there's a lull between meats coming to your table, someone might come by and, understandably, turn down your flame. That's fine, but when the food does come out, it takes a long time to get the cast iron hot again. This doesn't stop me from coming back for more here, but just one thing I wish was better about an otherwise great experience. There is a parking lot out front but it is cramped and usually fills up. There is usually someone helping to guide parking, but when it's completely full there's only so much they can do. Street parking in the area can also be a little bit tricky.

This place makes their soondae in house as I can tell the difference with frozen soondae and non-frozen ones. Until I go to Korea to try the real thing, this is the best I can get. The aunties here are still very nice but as always give grace because it does get busy here and one aunty would have to take care of multiple tables and party size as well. Overall I'll be coming here whenever I need my soondae fix!! If you haven't tried, definitely come and try! I still need to try the acye here with friends one day!

Was a quick 15 minute drive from the Hilton village. Arrived to find a no frills restaurant. First discovered meat jun while out in Lanai and loved it. Opted for both the meat jun mix and kalbi plate. Food was ready within 5 mins and decided to eat back at our hotel as we had a full kitchen and dining table. The food smelled amazing and somehow we made it back in less than 10 mins. The kalbi and bbq chicken were both awesome. Was really disappointed with the meat jun as it had a weird chewy texture. Upon closer inspection, not sure if it was even beef! Loved how they include both kimchi and cooked bean sprouts with each plate. We thought the portions were pretty generous and had more than enough for lunch the next day! Would definitely head back for both their kalbi and bbq chicken during our next visit out to HNL. I…read moregrew up in the 80s nearby, cruising Salt Lake Shopping Center from back when there was Pioneer Chicken and Kana's Ice Cream and Pay n' Save and Sizzler's. My parents would stop pick up Soon's on the way to UH games at the stadium, a Saturday splurge (they were never cheap) when my mom didn't have time to make musubi and hotdogs. Maybe i'm suffering from "da good ole days" syndrome, but my first trip back to Soon's in about ten years left me Broken Hearted... VALUE: the portions were OK, Soon's always gave a satisfying portions but never "masu's massive" satisfying. I thought they used to drop a rubbery fried mandoo as a bonus side with your plate but i could be wrong and i got none today. AMBIANCE: it seemed cleaned up, definitely. but like when you see an old plantation house with a thick coat of bright glossy latex it just felt a little off in a less charming, trying-too-hard kind of way. For reference, I absolutely love the "Honesty" of Bob's BBQ on Waikamilo, and BBQ Kai in Waianae. FOOD: I ordered a couple BBQ Chicken and Meat Jun plates for some contractors working on my parents' house nearby, thought that was a safe bet but NOPE. I felt bad i gave the contractors the terrible meat jun i wanted to apologize was so embarrassing. MEAT JUN - (2/10, +one point cuz it didnt give me food poisoning). Soon's version always was thin, but today was Next Level chintzy. I dunno if the meat was over-pounded flat to stretch it out but even WITH the coating it was the SIZE AND TEXTURE OF BITING INTO A STICK OF STALE WRIGLEY'S JUICY FRUIT THAT WAS FORGOTTEN IN THE BOTTOM OF YOUR BACKPACK FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS DURING A HUMID SUMMER VACATION, but without the burst of fruity goodness. So maybe a more apt analogy would be texture and flavor LIKE BITING INTO A STICK OF CLAY. MEAT JUN SAUCE - (nostalgic 8/10). sweet and tasty, but Why do they give only that MINI thimble portion cup of sauce?!? THE CLAY-LIKE MEAT JUN DOESN'T EVEN FIT THE OPENING OF THE TINY %#@$ CUP!! BBQ CHICKEN - (solid 6/10). Always over-marinated, the classic soon's tasty but heavy handed preparation. Clearly benefits from nostalgia. OTHERS - the BBQ meat / bulgogi is also over marinated, with small/medium shreds of slightly dry and too-hard meat. meh. - the "banchan" tsukemono kimchee foil pocket of veggies was always a treat, but so small. plus the kimchee is super weak more orange and sour than truly tasty. The TREAT - SECRET IS TO POUR A PRECIOUS FEW DROPS OF YOUR TINY CUP OF MEAT JUN SAUCE OVER THE VEGGIES TO GIVE IT A TASTY KICK. VERDICT: I grew up with Soon's, but I want to remember them fondly so I'm Never going back. My parents still live in Salt Lake so I'm sad. Guess I'm just going to file Soon's away with the fuzzy old memories of Aloha Stadium, the Islanders, and the 'Bows v. BYU. Next time i need Korean bento I'm going to Gina's.

I also love that it comes with unlimited rice, plus extras like seasoned salad, lettuce wraps, soups, and even things like fried chicken and mandoo. The quality of the meat isn't superb, but honestly it's more than fair for the price point and AYCE format.
