Had a hard time installing my exhaust so i googled and found this shop where they let you work on your car on their garage complete with tools and a lift. Instead of having someone install it for you and spend $160 you can do it yourself for $30 only!! Really cool place and chill!! I had a squeaky noise that two mechanics refused to even look at and another transmission specialist thought was rusty brakes. I was positive that it was drivetrain related. After learning about how a transmission/drivetrain works, finding some videos that sounded similar, etc... I bought a couple u joints and brought them in here. Joseph, who runs the place, was immediately friendly and helpful, drive around and agreed it seemed drivetrain related, instructed me on how to use the lift, and then took time to confirm my diagnosis. He helped me whenever needed with tools and technique, and after a few hours and ruining one u joint (which he was able to order in by the time I was ready for it), I rolled out squeak free. He even showed me a few other things around the vehicle, such as how to change my differential fluid (and broke free the rusted bolt to do so). Cost me $150 overall for parts and rental fee, which seems far less than a pro would have charged, especially due to my rusty parts. Plus I know a bunch of new things now. I highly recommend this place for any car issues you might have. read more

Alright.. I want to point right here and now that I bit more then I could chew for my dream garage project. This place could be a dream garage, if you know what your doing. I did not. Just putting that right out there. I came to this shop having bought all the parts needed to refresh my front, and rear suspension. My car is 17 years old and it was beyond needing it. I left this place in even more dire need of suspension work and also I start my car with a screw driver now. Uh so Joe pulled my car in and put it up on the lift as per the shop rules and policy, and heck if I know how. Gets it on there and lifts about two feet off the ground. He tells right away how to operate the lift, all's good. So go to town, alright I get my gloves out of the car, empty pockets right away see that the stereo is still on. I see the key still in it and think oh he musta not turned it all the way off, no problem I reach over try to turn the key no budge. I don't see whats wrong yet. Go around drivers side try again no budge. OK. Get in my lifted vehicle try and turn it no budge. Finally I look down see the cars in Neutral. I put it in Park key turns to off, key comes out but car lights and stereo stays on. After about 10 sec it turns off. I'm thinkin cool. It was at this point I shoulda tried to start it up again. I didn't. I proceeded to carry out my suspension mission and heck dream. Get going on my Suspension and its clear right off Imma noob. I'm thinking well I'm literally the only customer and he's not doing sh!t so let me bother him. I try to be cool about it. It's clear VERY soon that I'm taking him away from his computer whatever(porn for pyros?). He tells me and helps here and there. In many cases I just needed a third arm. I'm happy to shoot the sh!t and talk cars, learn, but I'm alone here and he's on the computer. So after about 4 hours of just having the most difficult time with every damn thing I'm blaming myself for thinking I could do it in the first place. I get about a 1/10 of the things I wanted to do done in 8 hours. I clean up shop. I got to hit the road. Want to come back next day to work more. I go wash my hands come back and its clear he cant start the car. Damn "Did you pull the key out?" Not exactly NO. What do i need to do to fix this? "Well did you pull the key out?" No you left it half on, lifted, and walked off with key in ignition. I tried to turn it off. At this point I'm very late to pick up my kid so I leave for a maximum of 4 min to make some calls. Come back and Joe has ripped the drivers side dash, fuse cover and lower dash cover. I say ripped cus plastic clips are broken off. I'm not even sure the extent of damage or if the pieces will go back on. He gets the car started with a screw driver and says he wants to test it to see if steering wheel will lock. He then drives it outside in the parking lot. This dude whips my old baby around the parking like I've never done, like he's checking to see if its crash derby ready. Even the other people standing around were looking at him like whaaat!? At this point I say to myself he's the A hole that turned this into an A hole kinda day, and that this is his fault. I just put new tie rods in on the drivers side and he's just wheel screaming it around the lot. I got a ripped out dash. I start my car with a screw driver. Dream garage huh? I wholeheartedly support what this shop does, and what the customer can achieve here. Its a dream car place in a really terrible, expensive LA mechanic lotto. Wasted on Joseph though. Why couldn't dude lift it up and give me my key? Especially knowing I'm in a garage using lift and tools first time? Better yet just help a dude out. Only customer all day, no sh!t. I've been coming to YDG for about 2 years now. I have a 2002 BMW M5 with over 240,000 miles so I figured I'd better learn how to take care of it myself. I'd never been under the car before but it's amazing what you can learn from YouTube. Fast forward 2 years and I've changed out nearly every bit of the steering and suspension, diff mounts, subframe mounts, brakes, rotors -- pretty much everything is new. YDG is great. It's looking a bit run down nowadays and their tools have taken a beating over the years, but they've never failed to have a tool I needed. They have a mechanic on staff: Joseph. He has always been willing and able to lend a hand, provide advice, or troubleshoot a problem. I see several poor reviews focused on Joseph, but I've never had anything but a great experience at YDG. So far I figure I've saved $5000 in mechanics charges, and I've become pretty good at working on my aging car. It'd be great if they gave the place a facelift and some new tool, but I'll keep coming back regardless. read more

I luckily stumbled upon this place just searching the web for DIY garages. I'm from San Diego and I decided that it would be worth the drive to make it out to LA for some major service on my car. I drive an older BMW which needed a particular gasket replacement for the oil filter housing which would have cost over $900 at a BMW dealership. This not only included changing the gasket but also draining/refilling and venting coolant. This maybe easy on most cars but it is a PITA on BMWs. It made sense for me to do it myself and save some money. The staff was terrific and very helpful. Not only that, but they know when to get out of your way and let you work in peace. What surprised me was the amount of tools they had on hand. BMWs have some weird tool requirements and they were able to accommodate me. I wish this business the best of luck and I will definitely be coming back when I need some more major work done. read more

I can't say anything but good things about this place. The people who work there are always willing to work with you when it comes to finding space and time. Being able to get on a lift and have every tool necessary cuts down on my time significantly. It's also really close to an O'reilly's and Autozone so if you happen to find out you got the wrong part in the middle of the job( like me) you can get another. They also offer all those little things you need like gloves, rags and cotter pins. Just an amazing place for gear heads and anyone that likes to work on their car or bike. read more

Best Idea Ever - Pay $25/hr to rent a professional lift and nice tools to do the job yourself. In a perfect world, this place would be franchised and available in every major city. **GO IF** - You want to save money doing maintenance and repairs yourself. - You know what you're doing and can do it in less time than the crooks at the stealership. -You lack an extended set of tools, need something specific (Torque wrenches, Impact sockets, Various ratchet extensions) -You need high ground clearance to get under the car with a shop lift. -You want the satisfaction and peace of mind that comes with doing it yourself. LOCATION: Small industrial park tucked away in Baldwin Hills. Look for their sign (non-lit) at the driveway near the curb. STAFF: Nice and down to earth. They stay out of your way and let you wrench away. Even helped me with holding down some parts while I loosened others when I asked for a tool suggestion. ENVIRONMENT: This is your Zen if your a car guy. It's peaceful with plenty of room and everything is kept clean (you are expected to wipe down and degrease the tools when you're done) I planned for an hour and stayed two because I took my time and enjoyed every minute of being there. SERVICE: Various fluids appear to be sold at the front desk and some are provided complimentary if you ask (ex: penetrating oil). A computer is also provided with ALLDATA guides and internet access should you want the quick Youtube crash course. MISC: You are required to sign a standard release/limit of liability waiver which is understandable. You are asked how long you have worked on cars as well which I assume if to gauge the comfort and mechanical skill level of the customer. If you're new to working on cars, it's likely best to call ahead and discuss this first to get a better understanding of what you should and should not expect. Also if you will be working on a hot part or the car hasn't cooled yet, you can leave your car with a fan on it (I took about 30 minutes) and won't be charged until you officially start wrenching away. While no longer having a shop, but still love wrenching, this place is a god send. Things are so much easier when you have a lift. My first time here was to do an exhaust install on my G37. I was impressed that the 4 post could accommodate my lowered sedan without issue. The tools selection were mostly of Harbor Freight variety. Not bad, but not great. They would work well for something as simple as doing an exhaust system. Shop air works well, and there's not much, if any wait time really needed for it to cycle. One thing is for you other renters. For fuck sake, put the damn tools back where you found em. I had a couple of issues with missing sockets and whatnot, but nothing to loose sleep over. The rental rate is fair and hey, you get access to a lift when you need one! I just wish one of these would open up closer to home. read more

This place is a godsend for people like me, who prefer to work on their own cars, but don't have the space or tools to do so. I was able to flush all of my fluids, replace my sway bar end-links, and replace the window trim and interior shifter boots on my car, all for the low price of $90. Which, is about one hour's labor charge these days, if you're lucky. But, for that, I was able to get four hours of time on a four post lift, all the tools I needed (and believe me, there were many!), unlimited shop rags, and even access to a heated parts washer. Quinn and B were quick to bring me whatever I needed, and I even learned a few new tricks from both of them (and I've been wrenching on my cars for over 25 years)! They have some sort of VIP program, which I need to find out more about, since I believe I'll be returning many times to get my used Miata back to like-new condition (especially with the help of Project G, which is conveniently located about 1.5 miles from them!) The only "drawback" was the traffic getting out there from Orange county, but in the end, it was totally worth it! read more

Had to pull an engine on a 2000 Subaru RS. I have never done this before and doing it in the parking garage at my apt was out of the question. Dream Garage has all the tools and even the specialty tools available to us on the spot. This place is super clean and organized... The owner seems to take great care keeping it that way. Read the rest of the reviews; this place is almost perfect (it's a bit far for me since I'm on the West Side, but I solved that by going on Labor Day. Even so, it's worth the trip!). My M-B GLK350 needed brakes (stupid soft M-B rotors!) and I wasn't thrilled with the $1,200+ estimates I was getting. I'm an old-time motorhead so doing it myself wasn't a challenge, but finding someplace to do the work was. Also, it's been a while since I've done any car work so all my tools are in storage, but that isn't a problem here! Owner Chance is a mellow guy who makes it easy; tell him what you want and he will point you to the right work bench. I was concerned about tools since M-B sometimes does some strange stuff. Sure enough, the front calipers are held on by E-Torx bolts (and the rears are standard hex-heads; go figure...) but no problem, Chance had a FULL set of male and female sockets and bits. Then came the brake flush; again no problem since Chance has one of those nifty vacuum gizmos that hook up to the compressor. Other nice touches are a parts cleaner (the Death Tank!), fans at all benches, creepers and rolling seats, air tools, pro-quality lifts... well, you get the idea. Also, everything is included! It was too hot for me to use one but he even has coveralls at no extra charge! Brake caliper grease, Loctite; whatever you need, and everything is top quality. Between the very fair pricing and my super parts deal (pads & DRILLED rotors, F&R for $260!) I spent just over a quarter what the independants were quoting me, and I now have drilled rotors; ; talk about win-win! It has all the right tools, lots of space to work, and all the bays are equipped with lifts. Every bay has a separate set of tools. But this is not a top-notch facility just because of tools and space. Tools and space you can get by simply paying money. Tools don't breathe life into a DYI mechanic shop where you might or might not know what's going on with your car. Even the best of certified mechanics can't nail the problem sometimes. The confidence to tackle jobs, from small to big in a DIY shop comes from instant access to expertise. So the shop has free Internet access. Brilliant to access YouTube, where almost all car questions are answered. But still, some gaps remain. What's norm may not be your reality. So they have Joe, an expert master mechanic. Joe knows cars and he has an attitude to help like few you will find. He is professional, personable, and knows when to offer advice, or help. And he goes the extra mile. Last week, in replacing sparkplugs and wires on my son's classic 3rd Gen Pontiac Firebird, we saw Joe's goodness in spades. We did everything by the book. Spacing the plugs and mapping the wires, and that is after getting into the impossible to reach GM engineers' designed madness that makes it impossible to get to them. Joe saw when we were struggling and came over to help. Then, what mechanics never do, Joe did. He drove the car out and said something was off. The car was not running as smoothly as it should have. We double-checked the wiring and left. On the way, the car stopped in low RPMs at the traffic light and on stop sign intersections. We called Joe. As we explained the issue, the phone dropped. So we carried on in confusion, knowing that this would be something we would need to figure out on our own. Then something happened, and time my jaw dropped. A car mechanic was calling to ensure that the DYI repairs we made were okay? Joe was trying to reach us. He had some suggestions and was making sure that we were in good shape. My son went back and Joe helped him clean the throttle body and also replace the fuel filter and distributor cap. No more stalling at stop signs and traffic lights. This is the excellence of culture all around. Great shop. Stumbled across this hidden gem by total coincidence. Came here for a stock exhaust pipe for my mustang that I had spoken to someone about over craigslist, and after two hour drive I arrived. The place is straight out of fast and the furious, very impressive. Joe helped me out a lot and took his time to perfectly fit my exhaust on and managed to save my old one( got a fix-it-ticket from a cop). The shop was impressive but not as much as Joe was. I am a member the aforementioned "gaggle of teenagers" (I'm not a teenager just to clarify) that put on the exhaust on my '15 Focus ST. This place is a great spot to DIY they have just about every tool you could want and everything is in working order. The lift rental rate includes air and a gaggle of specialty tools which was very nice and the price per hour wasn't bad at all. If you come to this shop knowing how to do what your doing or with the helping hand of someone who knows what they're doing its a great place to work. This place is really great. Wish they were closer to me. But, I'll still be back. Made an appointment online, and they were on schedule, when I arrived. I am new to DIY car maintenance, and Chance and Christian were fantastic - especially when I spilled fluid on the floor. They were very clear in their explanations and very patient. The showed me how to operate the lift and took care when they loaded/unloaded and secured my car onto it. They put a disposable floor mat down, as well as used plastic wraps to protect the driver's seat and steering wheel. The garage seems to have all the tools necessary to do most anything - for example, three different sizes of torque wrenches, which they were happy to teach me how to use. There are multiple benches of sets of tools, so I had access to my own complete setup. And they have the little things included, like rags, WD-40, degreaser fluid, latex gloves (first pair free), and Gojo to wash up. Not sure if this applies to every visit or just the first, but I went a little early my first time. There's a little paperwork to fill out and legal stuff to sign, so, allow for that. The place is pretty interesting. its a garage with a some lifts and all the tools you need to work on your own car. Note the workers do no help you so keep that in mind. I like the concept of it and the price was very reasonable for it. The lifts and tools were all ready for you to start wrenching on your car which was great. I only had a problem with my car as it was too low to make it up one of the lifts so we had to use some 2x4s and ramps. Was shocked as my car was not very low either. I was having a hard time changing out my water pump because I didn't have the right tools. My wife found this place and we decided to try it. We were a bit skeptical at first thinking that there would be additional costs for using different tools. I was surprised to see that everything is exactly the way the owner describes it on the website. As it turned out, not only did this place help "save the day" on my repair, I had a fun time doing it with the right tools. This place was just what I needed to service a couple European cars for my family. BMW and Mercedes transmission service and driveline fluids mainly. Kind of scared to work right in the middle of these big cars without a lift. I also needed a special tool for the 722.9 Mercedes transmission service and I asked Chance ahead of time and he didn't have it, but he bought a really nice mightyvac kit so I can use it the next time I came, that was really cool of him, the pump with adapter worked awesome, shoots the ATF in there quickly and easily and has drain back valve. I'll be back to press some control arm bushings for my car soon. read more
