Have come here a couple times since this place opened and have been pleasantly surprised! It's Korean style katsu and curry with lots of options. So far I've tried the assorted katsu plate (with cheese, shrimp, and pork), the chicken curry udon, the soba, and the spicy noodles. We usually hit about $50 for 2-3 dishes, but they also have small side dishes you can add on. Pros: - The food comes out really fast, and they seem to have a good system going with the tablet ordering on the table. - Easy parking lot, you just might have to park a little farther if it's a really busy time - I think it meets a unique niche in this area because there aren't that many Korean katsu places nearby - The curry udon was DELICIOUS, and the katsu meat to breading ratio is actually perfect. - The cheese katsu is very unique and tasty, but I probably can't bring myself to eat more than 1 at a time because it's very fried and I feel like it would give me diabetes. Just make sure you eat this FIRST before it cools down because the pull isn't as delicious if you wait too long. - I know this isn't a main dish but the soba noodles oddly were my FAVORITE - especially refreshing on a really hot day! - The portions are huge, every time I've gone I've had leftover katsu and they don't skimp on the meat - All the staff were super nice and kept our waters filled Cons: - not great for parties bigger than 4, it can get kind of busy even on weeknights and there's an average amount of table space inside the restaurant. - Can feel heavy due to just the nature of the fried food - but they do give you some citrus-y flavored cabbage on the side Honestly, this is a huge upgrade from the ramen 101 that used to be here, and I will definitely be back! read more

After my second time of trying Yumee Katsu, I can gladly acknowledge them as a reliable spot for quick, simple, and comforting meals revolving around their fried Katsu. At first glance, everything is quite simple, from the menu options to their layout and ordering system, everything is streamlined pretty well. Upon entering the small shop, you'll be greeted and seated by kind staff. There are tablets at most tables where you can browse and order on your own, or you can opt in for a physical menu where the staff will help take your order. During our first visit, my partner and I ordered the Curry Udon w/Fried Pork Katsu and the Jjolmyun (Spicy Korean Chewy Noodle?) w/Fried Pork Katsu. The Curry Udon actually lacked flavor and thickness. I would guess that it's because of the residual water from the cooked udon, but nonetheless, a bit disappointing. The Jjolmyun had more flavor, but it was primarily sweet flavors that embodied the chewy noodles and sliced veggies; contrast to the citrusy and savory Bibim Naengmyeon you'd more commonly see at Korean restaurants. Despite the weaker noodle dishes, the Fried Pork Katsu was easily the highlight. A big decadent piece of fried katsu sliced to encompass the majority of the plate proved itself. The meat to batter ratio was great, the meat was pretty tender, it was fried perfectly; exactly what you'd look for when ordering a Fried Katsu. Is it the best that I've ever had that's comparable to ones In Korea and Japan? No, but it gets the job done! The second time around I ordered the Rosé Toppoki w/Fried Katsu while my friend ordered the Curry Rice w/Fried Katsu. I actually enjoyed the Rosé Toppoki and thought it paired well with the Katsu. It was also a sweeter thick sauce with a bit of a spicy kick. Unsurprisingly, my friend wasn't too impressed with the Curry and thought it could've been thicker and richer, but like me, he enjoyed the Katsu. Both times, the service was great. We were greeted with kind smiles and occasional check ins throughout our meal. They even provided us a katsu sauce mid-meal, that you can supposedly ask for free of charge. The server kindly explained how it was imported from Korea and contained pear. Through and through, Korean Auntie's providing great service, smiles, and good food has lead to a great experience that would keep me coming back. I do think the meal is on the pricier side, but you are also served a side of salad, soup, and pickled vegetables to accompany your meal. read more

Came around 5:50pm on a Friday and there were a good amount of people already. We were able to get maybe the 2nd to last table. Some tables have the tablet to place your order, like the Dublin location. The restaurant is also similar in size to the one in Dublin - maybe a tad bit bigger. Service was attentive and we were given a large pitcher of ice water for the table. They somehow forgot our 2 yumee katsu orders, but did let us know they were working on it and gave us a free udon while we were waiting. This was a nice gesture. The udon was pretty good; it might be using the same soup/broth as the side soup that comes with the katsu. We did get our order about 10-15 minutes later and it was good. Good portion of katsu (maybe even a bit more than the Dublin location). Lean pieces of pork and cooked fairly well. Wow! Me and my Fiance really enjoyed this spot! Quick break down. Food: 5/5 stars. The food was hot and well plated. Their curry was delicious! I'm not a big curry guy but it was very good. We ordered the chicken katsu with rice and curry. I wasn't expecting it to taste that great honestly! The chicken had a really good crust and was moist. The plate was enough for the both of us to feel satisfied. We also had their Rose Topokki. The topokki was also delicious! Hahah. Plenty of heat from the spices but not overly spicy that it's not enjoyable. But just enough to make your nose a bit runny and to want to drink a few sips of water here and there. Solid Curry Chicken Cutlet. The cutlet was juicy and cooked perfectly. Wish it just came with more curry. You can order extra curry for $5.99, which I thought was a little on the pricey side. Tried a new spot in Castro Valley - Yumee Katsu We ordered the Rose Tteokbokki, Assorted Cutlet, and Soft Tofu Stew, and every dish was flavorful, comforting, and beautifully prepared. The Rose Tteokbokki had the perfect creamy kick, while the assorted cutlet was crispy and satisfying. The soft tofu stew was warm, rich, and perfect for a cozy meal. What made the experience even better was the amazing service. Our server kindly explained each dish to us and made sure we felt welcomed throughout the visit. She was incredibly friendly and helpful. I think she may have been the owner, which made the experience feel even more personal and genuine. Definitely a hidden gem in Castro Valley, and a spot we'll gladly come back to again. I had the rose pork katsu and the flavors were definitely lovely and all there although the katsu itself was a bit more on the dry side. I've been here three times already and this place is really great. The vibe is pretty generic franchise, but with a good atmosphere, similar to 88baobao. I love how they have iPads at certain tables to help you order at your own pace. One of the quirks here is that the written menu has a whole section that isn't translated to English (which is filled with tons of great stuff), so using the iPad is really beneficial. The waitstaff is also very friendly and seems to really care about how much you enjoy your food. One of the waitresses even said they'd make the ramyun and katsu better next time, which was a surprise because I thought it was great! My favorites, though, are the shrimp katsu and the cold soba. This is one of the only places I'm aware of that serves cold soba in a bunch of crushed ice and grated daikon. It's super tasty and perfect for the summer time. read more

We ordered the spicy soba and the pork cutlet curry. Let's start with the spicy soba, which was my actual craving of the day. It's a wonderful blend of spicy and savory. It has a chewy texture with a delicious mouth texture. Honestly, a bit on the spicy side for me though (don't let the 1 pepper rating fool you). Honestly, these are the perfect slurpable, spicy noodles that absolutely hit the noodle craving. The star of the meal for me personally. Additionally, the spiciness and refreshing flavor of the noodles helped balance out the heavy richness of the curry rice and fried cutlet. Now, onto the pork cutlet. Somewhat ironically, my favorite part was actually the curry and the rice mixture. It was super savory and had a bold curry flavor. The cutlet definitely was good but maybe a bit on the dry side. Though, I will make the comment that a slightly drier cutlet does work because you have a sauce. Overall, the whole plate paired very well together and balanced out in very harmonious flavors. Overall, really good meal, if not a bit on the heavier side. Note: .... sorry the soba photo is mixed. I was just that excited... Price (8/10) - I would say maybe it's a bit on the pricy side? I'm not entirely sure how to scale this because the portions tend to be bigger BUT it also is more expensive than other katsu spots ($20 vs. $15). In my eyes, I consider it slightly more expensive because it is a portion that I could reasonably finish by myself and not feel super stuffed. However, since they give you a big cutlet, I'd say the price is fine. Service (9/10) - Good service! They bring out your food quickly and they're pretty attentive (clearing the dining room as dishes empty, etc.). I asked about the pork cutlet and whether it was fried garlic (it was) and the server flashed a really big smile and said "Yes, very good." I could tell that she wasn't super fluent in English but overall, it was a super funny and sweet interaction so I thought I'd note it. Honestly, all around just nice people. I ordered the Pork Katsu and a side of the Cheese Katsu. Get here early! There was no wait when I arrived but as I ate, I saw the line getting longer and other parties had to put their name down to be seated. There are not too many tables inside but food comes out fast so tables get turned around quickly. The pork was tasty and fairly tender. They don't give you a lot of katsu sauce but on the menu eating suggestion, they say to be generous with the sauce. I had to get up to ask for more. I really like the sauce! If the breading could be lighter and not as crunchy, it would be perfect! Soup and rice were fine. Side dish veggies were also fine. The cheese katsu is just a lot of cheese and almost no pork. I should have trusted my gut and not gone with it. It'a $10 for two pieces. They're in soft opening so I'm guessing some logistics and work flow things are being sorted out. Wow! Amazing food. So glad they are here in town to give CV some verity. Been there 3 times so far and every time the food comes out quick. Everything about the food are exceeding expectations. The only thing I see that would be a room for growth is minimal service the provide is found wanting. The mandatory use of the tablets they have at every table to order is not even the huge part of the problem as for some less human interaction is good. It's the lack of refilling water, asking how the food was or even ensuring everything was okay. The tables are spacious enough to sit comfortably at the table with the trey they bring the food on. The flavors were great and satisfied our hungry stomachs. Service was attentive as we sat right next to the counter. I had a chance to do a take out curry cutlet. With plenty of tables around 4:30 pm, I was asked to placed my order through the kiosk. Most tables had a iPad like tablet to place orders. There was no personal attention at this empty restaurant. Since it was my first visit, a little attention would have made it more inviting and allow for questions. I simply placed an order for the dish I was most familiar. Something unusual would have been interesting would I need to figure out on my own. The food was well packed. The cutlet had a separate compartment within the container with the rice and curry. Also included was miso soup, coleslaw salad, pickled onions and daikon. I wish the curry had its own container because the rice soaked up most of the curry so I couldn't dip or let my cutlet pieces swim in the curry. The cutlet was nicely breaded. Had my first experience at Yumee Katsu on a busy Saturday afternoon, and while the food itself was a hit, the service was a bit of a rollercoaster. Finding parking was incredibly easy, and despite the compact, bustling space being packed, our party of three was seated quickly and greeted by an amazing aroma. We loved the convenience of ordering from the tabletop iPads, and our food arrived impressive fast--within 10 to 15 minutes. The chicken curry cutlet was flawlessly crispy, and the curry struck that perfect balance of sweet and savory, while the side udon and my friend's curry udon were delicious. The udon broth was SOO GOOD. However, the meal took a turn when my friend found a piece of plastic wire in his bowl. To their credit, the waitress noticed immediately and offered to replace it or remove it from the bill; since he was halfway done, he opted to take it off, and they later offered him a free side of curry sauce. Unfortunately, they were so focused on rectifying things with him that the rest of our table felt completely forgotten for follow-ups, and toward the end of our meal, a passing waitress accidentally spilled water on our feet. Been here twice now, they are still in the soft opening stage. But already from two weeks apart the differences are amazing. The first time we waited maybe 15 mins for our food to come out. No issue with this, as other Katsu spots have similar wait times. In my latest visit the food came out in less than 10 mins, they are figuring out their timing!!! The food both times was delicious, crunchy, and moist. I really need to ask for extra Tonkatsu sauce because it's so good! Again I eat before my camera so hopefully others have posted pictures, but all the small sides of pickles are a perfect pairing while eating something rich and fried. I've been wanting to try their Dublin location but luckily this location opened up much closer to home. We came in on a rainy day for dinner and it was packed. I asked how long the wait was and they said 5 minutes, I highly doubted their wait time estimate and continued to put my name on the waitlist. Literally within 5 minutes we were seated. Very disappointed, we have five people called around 5:45 pm today tried to make a reservation and they say don't need it , lots of seat when we got there, all full. We put done the name on the waiting list and ask how long to wait , they said maybe half hour so we wait. Half hour later, there is table for 8 available but they won't let us seat said there is reservation. Every table is just starting to eat we probably need to wait another one to one and half hour. Yumee Katsu - Castro Valley Grand opened this little Japanese Katsu restaurant in Castro Valley brought a whole new impact in our community dining. I stumbled into this joint to fulfill my hunger with curiosity. Kiosk ordering was so convenient, and furthermore each table had its own independent touch pad ordering. Very clean and dine friendly environment. It was an amazing experience and the food tasted above and beyond. Try their Kimchi Nabe...it is my favorite. All the katsus were perfectly fried. The taste was clean. The curry was especially deep in flavor. Very savory. Even though I didn't order it I could have taken a bath in the rose ttaekbokki.
