One of my favorite Chinese vegan foods! The wait time isn't too long and it looks like they make it fresh! General tso tofu is my favorite and the vegetables are delicious too! It's a great place when your craving good Chinese food. Sometimes they give you a calendar which is cute. My only complaint is they waste so much paper each time you place a take out order they give you 2 menus (after you order) and they are big and colorful! They should cut back on wasting so much paper. read more

Their food is normally, however I ordered delivery an hour ago, they said it would be 35 minutes, I still don't have my food, no one has called, and they are closed, so no one is answering their phone. When I was on the phone the person who answered had stopped talking to me in the middle of my order, talked to someone else for 3 minutes, then came back and we had to start all over again from the beginning. So far I am not impressed by their new "method" of customer service. I hope things improve. They used to be good. I thought that because of all the terrific reviews, I had finally found a decent Chinese place in Norfolk. Nope. I may be convinced that Chinese food (at least American Mom & Pop style) in general is disgusting and not really Chinese at all. I ordered Chicken Fried Rice and the Chinese Donuts. The rice was greasy. The chicken was slimy - as if it had been boiled first. As with most Chinese food places, their meat (whether it's chicken, beef, pork, etc) is like mystery meat. I could barely finish it. It was truly horrible. Now the Chinese donuts. I love these things. They are the equivalent to Pollard's puffs rolled in sugar. Probably not Chinese at all - but they are the bomb. I'm going to give them ONE more chance in the future and hopefully I can give them more stars. But like I said - I just am dying to find a truly authentic, fresh Chinese place. read more

More than a little bit upset with Yummy Wok because they overcharged me for a delivery AND made me very ill. Let me explain. Since my initial review, I have been there for takeout a few times. I found them to be an easy place for a quick and ultra cheap lunch and never experienced the kind of awful service other Yelpers complained about. Well, for the first time I decided to get some food delivered. BIG mistake. I knew the minimum was $10 so I ordered the Gen Taos lunch special, egg roll, and fried pan wontons. I asked the gentleman if this was close enough and he said yes...but are you sure you want the egg roll since what I ordered was close enough and I thought he said something like, it isn't a big deal, just $10. Well I thought he was being nice by being a little flexible on the delivery minimum - which other places have done - because my work is very close to YW. Instead what he did was to charge me for the egg roll (which I did not get at his suggestion) AND an additional bit to bring my total to $10. Honestly, I am totally bewildered by this because it is such mind blowingly bad customer service. If he had just made it clear how stringent they were, I wouldn't have minded, I would have just ordered two lunch specials or more egg rolls. Instead they just decided to up-charge me. I felt like I was robbed. Even worse? This is the ONLY thing I had all day and it made me very ill that night - the gift that kept giving. Thanks Yummy Wok, for the sake of a couple of bucks, you lost a repeat customer. Trust me when I say that I will never be back and have been advising anyone who asks not to go there as well. read more

I ordered the Mongolian Beef, which looked great on their picture menu on the wall. To my surprise, it was not (less vegetables). The bad: Tasted terrible! The person who took my order did not point out I could have saved $4 by ordering off their lunch menu (almost every other entree is on there), and they charged me for bottled water when I ordered a cup of water in place of tea . The only tea option, at a Chinese restaurant, no less, is sweet tea...??!!! :( Plus, they served my dine-in meal in a plastic box and rice on a styrofoam plate. Way to kill Mother Earth! read more

Went back to Yummy Wok the other day, and I'm happy to say that the sleep induced food coma that I suffered from must have been a fluke! Yay for no unexpected food comas! That being said, my pint of curry chicken was a bit off. While the portion was great and it had an awesome spicy kick, the chicken had an incredibly soft texture. It was cooked through all the way, so the only thing I can suggest is that it should have been in the wok a bit longer. While I won't be ordering this dish again (two stars for it), I will leave my rating at three stars because I think they have a wide variety that's worth going back to check out. read more

Had lunch today. I ordered the lunch portion General Tso chicken with fried rice. Pretty large portion for lunch size so your hard earned money goes far here. The chicken had the perfect amount of sauce and spice. The fried rice was good. Just an observation but usually the fried rice I have had from other establishments have egg in it and I admit I missed that. Nevertheless, the rice was still tasty. I read other reviews about the gruff looking guy behind the counter. I had to lol because I also observed what they're talking about, but ya know, sometimes you just gotta ignore it and don't take it personal! To the gruff guy: your smile could go a long way and maybe "get you some"... more business...haha...if you really care...not sure if you're just a paid employee or have an investment, but whatever it is, you look pissed, dude! If you are looking for quality service and above all, taste, look no further when considering Chinese cuisine. This establishment isn't ideal for dine in unless of course you are on a quick lunch break. Located conveniently in the heart of Ghent and usually plenty of parking around the area, however, if you don't want to venture out, their delivery system is excellent (make sure you call direct). As for the food, always on spot with accuracy and preparation. I like everything I have ever ordered from here and far too long a list to post. To name a few; General Tso (curd or chicken) cooked to a nice crisp and the sauce is exactly what you would expect and if you like it hotter just ask and they will accommodate. Egg Rolls, Crab Rangoons to die for, and Chicken and Beef Teriyaki are lean and flavored just perfectly. I have literally tried every Japanese and Chinese restaurant within a 5 mile radius of Ghent and nothing compares! read more

Hello all, On 3/12/14 Carol C wrote a review about bugs in her soup that she purchased from Yummy Wok. This claim is ridiculous!!!! I've been eating at Yummy Wok for over two years now and they are the best. If 20 to 30 bugs were in her soup why wasn't it in anyone else's soup. It comes out of one pot. Also why wasn't the bugs noticed when her container was first opened? 20 to 30 bugs? I'm sure she would have saw at least one. . I believe her statement to be false and maybe some kind of an attempt at extortion. This just happens to be during the voting period for the Best of 2014 administered by the Virginia Pilot. The truth is that Yummy Wok out does all Chinese restaurants in this area. They have a really clean place and the food is great!! and at great prices!! Ordered delivery on a Friday night and am proud to announce I have found my go-to Chinese food place! We got orders of sweet and sour chicken (average but good) and sesame chicken (yummy but could have used a little more sauce, also fan of the veggies under the chicken) with a quart of fried rice. Not sure what's going on, but it doesn't seem like they're changing their cooking oil very often, and the food is decidedly more bland and not as fresh as it used to be. I love YW. I have tried all the veg options they have and I love the Szechuan tofu and the garlic vegetables. They have french fries that are really good too. I have gotten to know the owners and they make everything there from scratch: the dumplings, eggrolls, sauces etc are all made in house. There was a guy on here that said the eggrolls are of the frozen variety, but they actually make big batches by hand and then freeze them. I eat here multiple times a week and rarely even have the smallest of complaints. :) read more

This is my go to Chinese take-out in Ghent. The environment leaves something to be desired, but the food and service totally make up for it. I have a weekly medication-induced flu day and Yummy Wok makes it tolerable. Last week my husband went in for a last minute large egg drop soup for me and ended up $0.50 short on change. The girl gave him the soup at a $0.50 discount instead of making him head to the ATM for cash. For this reason (and the delicious food), I will continue to patronize this little hidden gem! read more

The best Chinese takeout in the city. Usually fast delivery and super fast inside if you don't hit the dinner rush. Everything is delicious, but if your dish is lacking spiciness you can always ask for a hot oil to heat things up. I especially like the veggie dumplings and anything with the garlic sauce! read more
