This used to be our go-to spot for retro Chinese comfort food, but the quality seems to have gone downhill. Maybe it was just an "off" night, but we were consistently disappointed by the Mandarin Dinner for 2. The egg rolls were tasteless and super greasy, crab rangoon was 95% cream cheese, and chicken/beef sticks were just ok. Mongolian Beef was good flavor-wise but way too salty. Kung Pao Chicken was mediocre. On a positive note, our waiter was amazing, very attentive and friendly. The new automated serving "robots" are also a cute touch. read more

Having visited this location one time prior to this review, I deferred evaluation to ascertain whether my initial observations about this place were valid and reliable . More specifically, was my second visit as disappointing as the first? Unfortunately such was the case. My daugther ordered orange chicken and found it tasty if not a bit disappointingly paltry for the $28.00 spent to procure it. Though the food was acceptable, the service was less so. Maybe it's just us, but walking into a business and being greeted by waitstaff that makes eye contact, smiles speaks at decibel levels above eight and generally create a welcoming environment is always appreciated. Yu's management would do well to remember this. One can, as these folks apparently did, spend large sums of money to remodel a place but suffering through disengaged, aloof, whispering staff that neither greets patrons on arrival or thanks them on departure is a huge downer and both dullards, the young man and perhaps his mother or relative were so afflicted. Paying $28.01 for below average orange chicken and pot stickers makes migration to the Panda three blocks east as the crow flies a very easy decision the next time the spirit for simple carbohydrates quicky converted to glucose moves me/us. Separately, in reading these reviews, I note that the establishment limits its replies to favorable evaluations which is precisely what it shouldn't be doing. The preponderance of one star reviews elicit no reply from these individuals. In our instance, for example, somehting like the following might be offered: Dear Customer: "Thank you for driving 6 miles to our establishment to overpay for what you have deemed average food proffered by the only people we could find to provide it. We apologize that Herman of our service staff was unable to make either eye contact or discernible enunciations during your visit secondary to penicillin injection number three but we have counseled him and indeed encouraged his use of sick time as warranted. As for his colleague's similar limitations on the night of your visit, we really have no explanation, nor excuse, other than to conclude that the proverbial water chestnut falls not far from the tree. We have consulted with the guru of Chinese restaurant operations, Mr. Ferlin Woo, who will, by the time he is done, make sure that this place functions like a well-greased (not greasy) Panda franchise just two or three blocks east of our distressed milieu." read more

Our family has been enjoying our trips to Yu's Schaumburg location for years, with great food, outstanding service and delightful ambiance. The youngsters have always been in awe of the openly viewable food preparation area, attended by a whole team of chefs. This was our first trip to the Vernon Hills location and we were not disappointed. I seem to remember that building originally housing a high class Chinese restaurant, decades ago, called the Silk Mandarin. In the future, the only reason we might choose to make a trip to the renowned location of "Yu's" in Schaumburg over the one in Vernon Hills, is to have the "kids" admire the glass enclosed, viewable kitchen. I read some of the negative reviews, here, about the "uncouth" behavior of the Vernon Hills' staff in the past . . . And rest assured, those kind of problems are no longer an issue. Our waiter was most accommodating. He answered all of our questions competently and the whole staff, including a "glorified Roomba-style robot" handled our order with grace and "class." I ordered the noodle soup and an entrée, requesting the food to be "mild." To my amazement, the noodle soup came in a huge bowl, with a "cacophony of flavors" that included various ingredients like shrimp, veggies, etc., along with the delectable noodles. That bowl of soup was more like a gourmet stew and was a meal in itself. I wound up taking most of my entrée of delicious Mongolian Beef home in a "doggie bag (box.)" And although it was a busy evening, everything was as it should be, resulting in an enjoyable night out, with great food and quality time with the family. One of the "yardsticks" that I use as a gauge of authenticity and quality of a Chinese restaurant, is whether they have a significant clientele there, who appear Asian. When we were at Yu's in Vernon Hills, almost all the tables were in use and at least half of the clientele appeared to be of North Asian ancestry. I highly recommend that you add this location to your list of future meals, when you go out. read more

The food at this place is mediocre at the best but I have been here a few times since it is close to where I live. Today I went there and there was no host/hostess at the front. Someone came out after a minute to tell us to sit where we'd like. It was about 8 minutes when a busboy came out to start serving water. He started to serve people who came after us first. I caught his attention and he corrected it. Another 8 minutes later, a waiter came out and he too started to take the order of people who came in after we did. When I complained to him, his attitude is like "well, it's the same what re you complaining about". I left after that. Mediocre food + crappy service = not worth coming back for. read more

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY. Probably the worst meal ever. They deserve 000000 stars. I was there for lunch with a group of approximately 20 ladies. The group coordinator called several times to confirm they had a lunch menu and gave separate checks. Upon arrival we were told due to Chinese New Year they had no lunch menu and could not do separate checks this was after 3 separate calls by our coordinator. A manager was asked for and we were told there was no manager on duty. (I come from a restaurant family and find this highly suspicious.). They eventually agreed to giving us separate checks after we threatened to leave and find another restaurant in the area. Let's get to the food. My friend and I decided to share some appetizers, where do I start. 1. Steamed Pot Stickers. Absolutely no flavor, even the sauce tasted like watered down soy sauce. 2. Appetizer Sampler we shared, consisting of: A. Crab Rangoon. Tasteless B. Egg Rolls, basically raw cabbage deep friend, the outer skins were at least crispy C. Shrimp Toast, palatable, probably the best thing I ate. D. Chicken Sticks, extremely salty E. Beef Sticks, also extremely salty. The total bill for the 2 of us was $30 and change, but not worth it. We have always loved Yu's but our favorite one was always the Schaumburg restaurant. We were glad to try the Vernon hills restaurant because it is much closer to our home. Sadly it was a huge disappointment both with service and food. We probably asked our service at least a half dozen times for separate checks and when the check came it was one check. We sat at a round table that had a lazy Susan. There were 5 of us and they picked the table for us to sit at. I have never been charged a service fee (charged us 20% for a tip) for 5 people. When our food came, we all got our dishes none of which were very hot but one dish which was a orange beef didn't come yet. That dish actually came in about 10 minutes after all the other dishes and some people are already done eating. One of the dishes that happens to be a favorite dish of mine didn't taste anything like it has tasted dozens of times in the past at the same restaurant, so I'm not sure what changed whether it be the chef or I have no idea, but it was not good and it was Mushu pork. We had a terrible time getting somebody to help us to even give us water. The service was just horrible. Our waiter came to check on us one time near the end of the meal and that was it. We were never offered anything else we were never asked if we wanted anything else. When it was time for the bill it came and it was all done on one bill when we were repeatedly asked for it to be on two checks. And on that bill there was a $20 tip 20%. It was 20% and we would not have given 20% as a tip. Our waiter just wasn't that good. We tried asking somebody to split the checks and they didn't understand we were talking about and finally we had an English-speaking waiter come over and he understood what we meant. He took the check and when he came back, our bills were split. Yeah, take it off the service charge For us sitting at a table that had a Lazy Susan and it was bigger. That wasn't our choice that was theirs and he kind of fix that mess. Our waiter did come back and apologize for the late meal and then heat shuffle off. I think next time we try use it'll be the wheeling location because this is probably the second or third time we've been to the Vernon Hills location and we have not had good luck because we like the food we would like to try another location and see if that's better. I would not recommend unfortunately this restaurant to somebody else because of the service and it just is not put together properly. It just seems like everybody's walking around and nobody knows what they're supposed to do. The robot waiters apparently know what they're supposed to do but that's not a big help for us as a customer, so will try another location and hopefully fare better. Delicious! We've been here before. Service and food are great. This is my first time here since the "reopening". We wanted to eat on the patio. Sadly they were very short staffed my reason for 4 instead of 5 star review. But as soon as we walked in the server told us she'd do the best she could do under the circumstances. I appreciate her honesty. Based on this, we ate indoors. They have taken lots of precautions, plastic between booths, tables set far apart, etc. I've seen much worse. It was a Saturday. We didn't realize there weren't lunch specials on the weekend. So full price and full entrees here we go. There was enough food for an army. It arrived at our table fresh and delicious. I really want to like this Yu's location. I remember going to the Schaumburg one as a kid and being in awe of the scale and watching the inner workings on the kitchen while we waited for what would undoubtedly be an amazing Chinese meal. Much better than your typical cheaper grab and go offering that seemed prevalent back in the 90's and early 2000's. Unfortunately, this location seems to have wavering quality perhaps decided by how busy the location is on any given night. Twice this week I ordered from there, once pickup and once delivery and it was as good as the Schaumburg location. Deliciously warm and comforting soup dumpling off the dim sum menu, slightly fiery and vinegary xiao ping (or yu shiang) pork. Melt in your mouth pork dumpling, with a new chew but perfectly pan seared bottoms. But then, there's last night's order on a Saturday night. What was easily the best BBQ pork fried rice I've ever had on other nights became a mushy, mess. So disappointing that I'll likely toss the remainder. The wide beef noodles ended up swimming in grease. If you choose to go to this location, pick your time and day wisely as until they get a handle on quality control or have a solid rotation of chefs who can be consistent, you're likely to end up amazed and then wildly disappointed. Like other Yu's Mandarin restaurants, the decor is amazing, the service is good, but --- this location probably has the worst food of any of the Yu's Mandarin locations. I have difficulty deciding on whether this is Americanized Chinese food or a variation on classic Chinese food. Either way, I wasn't a fan of the flavor combinations here and was confused by some of their cooking choices. The egg drop soup is like a seafood tofu soup with tomato.. mixed with egg on top. It was a confusing flavor combination that wasn't like anything I've had but wasn't particularly good either. The hot and sour soup was loaded with ingredients but the base of the soup was really forgettable. Not particularly hot nor sour, but had an overpowering flavor of vinegar which was offputting. Scallop with beef: An okay dish, the beef and scallop were tender but there wasn't really any wok hay in this. Rainbow chow mein: Messy pile of noodles with indistinct meat, this was similar to the really cheap chow mein I had in college. It fills you up, but nothing I'd really order again. Noodle platter: The noodles were fresh and chewy but the seafood really took away from the experience of the dish. This was pretty bland but fairly salty, despite ordering it with low-sodium. Overall, a bit of a disappointment as this restaurant took a long time to open and looks really great from the inside and the outside. But, the food really needs to improve to match the level of decor and service in the restaurant. read more

Entered the building and the host pointed across the room and said "have that table". No silverware or napkins on the table. Table was still dirty. No one asked us if we wanted drinks. When we were asked if we wanted to order food, we asked if we could order drinks. The waitress walked to the bar after each person ordered their drink. They brought each dish out at least 15 minutes apart. No sides of rice, and when we asked, that was another 10 minutes. We had to walk to the server station to get our own silverware. The food was TERRIBLE. They advertise "fresh made noodles", but they were most definitely not...and undercooked. I can't come close to expressing how truly awful this experience was. read more

We first sat down and noticed that there were bugs in the soy sauce and vinegar containers. I should have listened to my fiancé when he said let's leave. But we gave it a chance. We were served ONE glass of water and they never came back to refill. We were not served tea as all other tables were. We ordered the orange chicken. TERRIBLE. Tasted like it was made with burnt oil. The Beijing beef was the same. Pieces of burnt food cooked into it with what you can assume was burnt oil as well. Went here with a colleague for lunch during the week. Went a little early around 11:30. The place was pretty empty. There was a big group and a couple small groups. We ordered lunch specials. I had the Kung Pao chicken. The soup came to us fast. The lunch came to us right after. Portion size was great. I really like the spice level of mine. Tasted really good. Check came to us quickly after they cleared our plates. I will end with saying this is a really nice looking chinese restaurant. You can't really tell from the outside, but walk in and the place is beautiful. Tons of parking on 2 sides of the building. It's also a rather large place that can accommodate a large crowd. This should really be 2 reviews, one for cuisine and one for service. I have no problem giving Yu's a 4-star for their food. I've been a customer for years starting with the Schaumburg location and now very close to my home in Vernon Hills. We often try something different on the menu and have never been disappointed. It's arguably the best Chinese food in the area...but. We visited for lunch this last Sunday and had a terrible experience. I'm really uncomfortable posting a critical review, but am hoping that a voice will be heard and changes made. We arrived at 1pm and were promptly seated in a booth in the bar area where there were 2 other tables occupied. After we ordered, maybe 4 more tables filled up. So, long story short, after ordering, we received our beer 15 minutes later, and our first dish, that wasn't even hot or fresh, 50 minutes after arriving. Another 7 minutes for the next dish, and then another 7 minutes for the final dish. All this after we watched all other tables but 1 get served their food before us, and the 1 that didn't get served actually walked out. During the long wait, we did notify our server several times and all he did was provide some excuse that he postponed our order submittal so that drinks could be served. We had 1 beer on our tab! We were in the restaurant for 1 hour and 20 minutes, just 3 dishes, service out of order, cold food, and poor excuses. We really normally enjoy Yu's so would just like to avoid this kind of experience in the future. read more

Highly recommended!!! i will DEFINITELY give 5 stars for Yu's. i tried almost every dishes on their menu, non of them made so disappoint. Especially this location decoration is very nice and so cozy. If you are planning to go there, i will recommend Mongolian beef, Lollipop chicken wings, Noodle platter, Noodle soup. During lunch hours food comes up very fast. If you don't have long break, you should go to Yu's. I promise it will be faster than fast food places. Portions are really good size. Staffs are nice, always smiling. Also if you are going to order deep fried dishes for carry out, you would better request sauce on the side. i think people more likely to write a bad reviews.
