I could write a review on how their greasy burgers soak the bun by the time I get home, but today I decided to get their new spicy chicken sandwich, you know, since they're not anti-gay like chik-fil-a. I thought if it was anywhere close to as good, I could feel less guilty about eating one. I placed my order with who I assume was the owner and for what I assume was the first chicken sandwich they've ever sold because his eyes lit up and he started talking about how much I was going to love it, how I was going to tell all my friends, and how huge it was. Honestly, I started recalling those old KFC commercials about how you should never order chicken from a burger place. When I got home and took a bite, I was sorely disappointed. The sandwich WAS huge, but didn't look at all like it did in their ads. Instead it was just two thin slices of chicken breast, rubbery and flavorless despite marinating overnight. The thing is, it was too big to eat, so I removed the second chicken breast and ate it separately. It was deep fried, but didn't have any sort of crunch to it and the spice was generic and lacking. I opted for a vanilla milkshake instead since I bought a bottled drink from 7-11 right across from this restaurant. I love that their burgers are so customizable and have lots of free toppings. However, they don't really hit for me for some reason. They kind of just taste bland which makes no sense. The servings of fries/onion rings are huge, but the fries (even seasoned) are bland and bad. the onion rings are good, but have thicker batter than most onion rings. I hadn't been here since 2014. I remember that April day. Z-Sandwich had just opened and I decided to try it out. I had a Sarsaparilla soda, my first and a sandwich which I enjoyed. Well, I hope that Z-Sandwich returns because I dug it. This particular day, King Day was brrrr cold and I wanted to fried chicken sandwich with a side of fries. Z-Burger was pumpin but the line was moving. I knew I wanted Spicy Chicken which I feel like they didn't have a year ago in Columbia Heights at that Z-Burger. Shout out to the amount of toppings offered. There's a lot that you can choose from but I stuck to BBQ Sauce and Banana Peppers. On the side I ordered, in keeping with my objective, Seasoned Fries and went to warsh my hands. It didn't take long for the food to arrive ready and I took a seat right by Z-Sandwich, for old times sake. This was my third Z-Burger sandwich so I can definitively say they come with two patties. I forgot all about the Z-Sauce but the ketchup sufficed and everything was nice. The chicken wasn't too spicy and I'm not mad at that, I'm getting old. The fries were fire as I expected. Two thumbz up. Though I don't eat at Z-Burger often, I never leave not satisfied. A simple man I am. I became a Z-Fan that day walking down 14th Street when somebody handed me menu card that said...10% off your next order. A single cheeseburger with all my favorite fixings, a side of seasoned zfries and a soda will run you about $8. Not bad. This particular location is larger than the Glover Park outpost, about 3 times the size, and they have 50 types of shakes for you to choose from. How does one go to a place called Z-Burger and not order a burger? Well, when grilled cheese is an option and you don't eat cow, that's how! I thought Five Guys was all that, but then came Z-Burger into my life. It has literally the same menu only with the addition of 75 different kinds of milkshakes! I had the chocolate and peanut butter shake. It was thick and tasty! The grilled cheese was exactly like their competitors - a hamburger bun w/ the top edge chopped off and grilled with lots of processed American cheese. The best part- it's only $2.29! The regular-sized shakes are only $3.39. My pal loved her cheeseburger and we shared her regular-sized ($2.69) fries which were more than we needed. They were hot and crispy. Malt vinegar is available too! Counter service is fast and efficient. There were lots of people working in the kitchen. We had our food in no time at all! So basically, I rarely go for the "big messy burger" anymore. But when the burger is free (thanks to a Scoutmob DC deal), I can get it in turkey, and there's like a jillion-and-a-half milkshake flavors to choose from, I sort of HAVE to get one. I drove to Tenleytown at 11:30 am on my day off, parked legally in the neighborhood for free, and walked around the block to z-burger. Second in line? I beat the rush? No freakin way. Yep. Truly, I could have used more time. I haven't encountered z-burger since the "Sail Away with Yelp" event at the Navy Memorial like 2 or 3 years ago. But ok. Josef guided me thru the "ordering process." I ordered the turkey burger with bacon, provolove, mushrooms, mayo, mustard; z-fries; and and a chocolate marshmallow milkshake. (Is there an AED machine on the premises?) At z-burger, you wait while they yell out the number printed on your ticket. When my food # was called, I found a seat in the atrium. Ahhh, sunlight, warm me up & illuminate my corny iphone photos. Ahhhh... Wait, I forgot to get ketchup near the sodas. Ok, now, I'm ready to eat half of the big, juicy, messy turkey bacon provolone mushroom burger. It was nice & hot. Bursting with flavor. So were the fries (though I don't care for the skins). And the milkshake? Sweet chocolate heaven. Although the scoutmob deal has ended, I would go back to get another burger I'm a fan, ok? No, seriously, this experience was as good as it gets. read more

Z-Burger, as part of loyalty building for the zombie apocalypse sold burgers for $1 during snowpocalypse II (their official stance was 1ft or more of snow according to the nat'l weather service). Anyways. my cheese burger was only $1, or $1.10 cents because we gotta give Caesar is cut and it was damn near the closest thing to in and out i've had out east. So for the uninitiated that means fresh ass ingredients and lots of thousand island sauce. Excellent. The fries were legit, a large order is a pretty obscene amount of food and there is plentiful malt vinegar for your enjoyment. This is a quality burger. It reminds me a lot of Five Guys, but I think its better. My friend and I went fairly crazy here, each getting a double cheeseburger, a side of half fries and half onion rings, and I got a vanilla milkshake. The burger was very good (though I'll probably get the single next time). Better than Five Guys, better than In & Out, probably best I've had. The fries were also very good, and there were plenty of them! Next time, if two people are ordering, just share one regular fry, it'll be more than enough. The onion rings were pretty disappointing, and I didn't like the shake all that much. I still say In & Out shakes are the best. Another things I didn't like was the price. Eh. Went with the Philly Cheesesteak. Because I love trying new cheesesteaks. I wanted into z burger not knowing what to expect only that it reminded me of 5 guys. So the Philly cheesesteak. Yeah. Not feeling it. It looked really promising with the amount of cheese on the hogie but the first bite told me this would not be a good experience. Got about half way into the sandwich before I realized I did not want to finish the sandwich. Both brothers got a burger and after trying my Philly they both said their burgers were better so moral of the story. Don't get the Philip. Go with a burger The fries were eh. So so. Food: Burgers are good and thin like 5 Guys. Pay attention that the "standard" toppings include mayo so if you hate mayo as I do be sure to specifically order no mayo. The onion rings are good but really heavy/greasy and the seasoned fries are worth it. They have a onion ring/fries combo but only in the large size. Get a milk shake, they are thick and filling and have a TON of flavors. Service: Everyone is nice but they seemed really disorganized. I got my milkshake 5 mins before my food, even though others who ordered after me received their food. Overall to me this is like 5 Guys with onion rings and milkshakes. I'd definitely go back again if I was in the Tenleytown area but wouldn't make a trip across the city just to go. read more

I had the opportunity to try their milkshakes at at a Yelp event a while ago and picked up some poker chips good for free burgers and milkshakes. Even then their milkshakes were really damn good. Too bad this place is too far away cuz I would definitely be swinging by more often. Shakes cost as much as the burger, but they are well worth it I think....even if you are lactose intolerant. read more

Driven by this place a number of times. It's such a curious looking building in the neighborhood, I thought I'd try the chow. And I'm glad I did. Didn't try anything fancy, just the burger and fries. To go. But, here are some things I noticed. First, there was a single person dedicated to hand dipping these massive onion rings and tenderly flipping them as they fried in oil. That was impressive to see. I'm not an onion ring person, but catching that action almost made me one. Secondly, the place is clean and tidy, and the staff professional. Genuine service people, not amateurs trying to learn a job. Third, the carryout bag is not a typical sack, it is designed more like a small paper grocery sack with a handle. Now, these little things alone don't mean much, but combined, it means that Z is bringing class to the burger joint, and I can get behind that. Z also carries veg and turkey burgers as well as other sandwiches. A doubleburger and fries set me back $8.59, which is a premium to pay. But, they gave me a heap of rustic cut fries. Most places, half the fries you're served that are rustic cut are inedible. These were good, every last one of them. Finally, I must comment on the space. It's really quite nice and very well designed. Spacious and classy seating inside, but there is also interior patio seating, and outdoor seating with cleverly designed walls to shield diners from the busy, grinding traffic on Wisconsin. The comparisons to Five Guys are reasonable, but Z's is a cut above. Slightly better quality in just about every category: nicer interior, better fries, better selection, slightly better value. Mind you, I'm a fan of Five Guys, but Z's also has their act together and deserve commendation. The one disadvantage is parking. Street parking available on the east, but it might take some time to find it. I'm glad I found Z's and i plan to stop here again. It beats the tail off the McDoodles down the street. read more

I have driven by this location many times and it seems full at lunch time. If you don't like crowds, visit after Easter mass where the only people sitting down are employees on a break. There is a sandwich side and a burger side. They even make veggie burgers from beans. Hubby loved the double burger. The meat was thick and good. They don't charge extra for toppings but the burgers are a bit pricey anyway. I got fries and a shake. The banana shake tasted like home made ice cream. It was delicious. The fries were wonderful. They didn't seem that greasy and they were huge. The place wasn't busy and it took a while to get my order. If I were meeting friends in the area, I might consider trying the veggie burger sometime.
