What do you picture when you think of Thai food? A burst of fiery spice, vibrant red curries, or a classic plate of Pad Thai? When a friend visiting from out of province, who happens to be Thai, put Zab Bite on his Vancouver wishlist, I didn't have huge expectations. I just imagined the typical Thai staples everyone knows and loves. Nothing new, right? I couldn't have been more wrong. ​Our experience started on a high note before we even sat down. When we arrived, my friend realized he had accidentally booked our table for the next day. Luckily, the server was incredibly accommodating and managed to get us seated within just five minutes. Looking around the room out of pure curiosity, we couldn't help but notice that almost every table had a stunning rattan basket overflowing with appetizers. It looked amazing, and we knew we had to order it. Was it as good as it looked? Absolutely! The Assorted Appetizer basket came loaded with veggie spring rolls, crispy pork toast, shrimp wraps, and crispy pork cakes. Every single item brought a unique texture and flavour to the table, making the whole dining experience incredibly fun and enjoyable. For the main course, my friend ordered the Tiger Prawn Pad See Ew and the Crispy Grilled Pork. The Pad See Ew was just as delicious and comforting as you'd expect from a great Thai spot, but the Crispy Grilled Pork was the absolute star of the show. It was so incredibly crispy on the outside that you could actually hear a loud crunch with every single bite. Somehow, it managed to be shockingly crispy without being greasy or oily at all. If I could, I would give this place a 3.5. Now to decide whether to round up or round down. I decided to round up. I have been eating Thai food for the last 30 years in the U.S. and in the most recent 20+ years in the Seattle area which I think has some pretty good Thai food around. This place was small and my daughter thought that it was over hyped. Overall, I did enjoy the food. We ordered papaya salad without fried shrimp, sliced beef (vs. cubed beef) pad see ew, tom yum soup and mango sticky rice for dessert. The papaya salad was very good with lots of veggies and a nice dressing. I think they could julienne the carrots and papaya thinner but it was fine. We really enjoyed the pad see ewe and definitely recommend the sliced beef. It was interesting that the noodles were clear versus the typical milky rice noodles. It could've used more veggies in the dish (typically Chinese broccoli). Tom yum soup was perfectly flavored with that sweet and sour marriage. Our eyes really enjoyed the mango sticky rice with its outstanding presentation: a crispy deep fried intricate "star" on top of green rice surrounded by mango pieces but the least favorite dish to our mouths as it just didn't have a whole lot of flavor. The cream was on the side but it should have been sweeter since the mangoes weren't. I would be willing to try it again but my daughter said she would like to try other places. I didn't think it was "knock your socks off" amazing Thai food but it wasn't bad either. Above average than most for sure. Street parking was not a problem for us. This place located at the corner of East 26th and Fraser St. is a Michelin star restaurant. There is no parking lot so be prepared to spend some time looking for street parking. On the Sunday we went, the wait without prior reservation was 45 minutes for two people. We ordered the assorted appetizers, pork pad thai, and drunken noodles. The food came out 15 minutes after ordering. The assorted appetizers and the drunken noodles were certainly unique and tasted good. However, they are very greasy and heavy. The pad thai had great flavor, but the bean sprouts were raw. I prefer them cooked instead. Been saving Zab Bite to try out for quite some time! And glad I finally made it out to the neighbourhood for a bit! I can confirm it is one of the best Thai restaurants I had as of yet. There is so much flavour in every bite! The pad sew ew was a favourite of mine. The thick clear chewy noodles were so fun and delicious to eat and the dish had so much wok hay! A favourite of mine. An elevated Thai restaurant dishing out unique street foods, and traditional favourites. While I agree the food is prepared well and very tasty, I find it bit on the pricier side for the portion size, compared to similar elevated restaurants like Lunch Lady or Pok Pok (USA). Pad see ew, traditional stir fried rice noodles, good for them to use wide noodles and very good wok hay, however, their fried tofu, feels clumsy. They could cut them into smaller cubes for easier eating. The grilled pork jowl was tender, plump, and with good dressing. While the dry mixed spicy pork noodles were pleasant but could be a bit more exciting? One thing they do very well are all the shrimps. Consistently plump and well cooked, especially with the pad sew. We went adventurous but tried their Thai version of beef pho. Quite unique in taste, herbal, kind of sweet, spicy, but in kind of a coagulated broth. Perhaps explanation on the appearance will help the worried look on our faces. read more

I came here to celebrate my best friend's bday as she was craving good Thai food. Despite the mixed reviews online, most of what I heard from friends was positive. When we arrived on Friday night, there were already a few parties waiting outside. Since we made a reso, we were sat promptly and shortly after given menus and water. Since my best friend is vegan, we ordered separate dishes for ourselves and shared the deep fried tofu appetizer. There was nothing too special to say about the tofu but I found the peanut sweet and sour sauce very delicious and even kept the remnants to put onto my main dish. The cocktail was also a pleasant surprise. It was very pretty and everything one would wish for in a sweet and fruity cocktail. Mains arrived briefly after and although I did not know what to expect, I was pleased with the aroma and flavour of the stir fried thai holy basil with beef slices. The server recommended sliced beef if you prefer tender pieces as opposed to marinated beef chunks (in cubes and maybe harder to chew). There was definitely a kick of spice in it which is expected for Thai food but needless to say, I did not feel fantastic the next day (I'm not the best with spice...). My friend thoroughly enjoyed her green curry with tofu and mentioned the curry flavour stuck out to her a bit more than other places. However, she also felt the wrath of spice and was not very well the next day. She also ordered a side of roti that I sampled - but found way too greasy for my liking. Overall, this was just a small taste of the menu and I would like to return to give other menu items a try before giving a real verdict. Prices were a bit on the steeper side but I'm not sure if that's just inflation hitting everyone where it hurts most... In addition, a random observation but my best friend mentioned she felt the tables were very high relative to her height...Not sure if anyone else may feel that way but it may be something to look out for (especially if coming in with children etc.). read more

Bomb food, full of flavour, spicy too! You can pick your spice level. As a south East Asian, everything on the menu fits my palette so well. They are not skimping on garlic or onions, super umami. We got the pad see ew which is a must, wide chewy noodles, lots of fried egg and chicken. I would try the spiciest level next time. The coconut soup was full of mushrooms, 4 large shrimps and so hearty! The small was perfect as an appetizer for 2. And for $12, it's really good value. The Salmon Sashimi Zab with yum sauce never disappoints. I absolutely love this dish. The sauce has lime juice, onion, and fresh herbs. The Crying Tiger was perfectly seasoned. It was enjoyable on it's own, but I really liked the sauce that came with it. It was slightly acidic with a hint of spice. The Stir-Fry Thai Holy Basil served with jasmine rice and a fried egg Chicken  was not at all what I expected. When I ordered it, I assumed it would be like a fried rice dish, but it was rice with an egg on top and chicken on the side. It was tasty, I especially liked the basil flavor, but overall it was a very simple dish. The crispy pork toast, is quite unique. The toast is slightly sweet and it was a perfect amount of pork filling to toast. I liked the vinegar sauce that came with it. The Roti was nice and flaky, but it felt very basic and I was disappointed that it didnt come with any dip. Their customer service is great. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Was very exited to walk by and get a table for 2 before the rush of dinner hour. Benn hearing about Zab Bite - Thai E-Sarn Cuisine for over a year now. Our servers were attentive and pleasant and help us with the menu and made recommendations. We had the following: Shredded green papaya salad with fermented fish sauce and for an additional $5 we added the crispy pork skins Crispy Grilled Pork with Jaew dipping sauce Dry Mixed Tom-Yum with egg noodles Our favourites were the papaya salad (refreshing and delicious with the big punch of fish sauce and the crispy pork skin was cooked perfectly) and crispy grilled pork (the top was not that crispy, but the pork was tender and the sauce made the difference - addicting!). The dry mixed noodle was a disappointment as it was very salty and for $22 the portion was small. We did let our server know when asked how our meal was, but we ate enough of the noodles to not make a big deal to return to the kitchen. We appreciate our server didn't hesitate to return the dish to the kitchen. We also enjoyed our bright pink non-alcoholic drink as recommended by our server. Overall, I enjoyed majority of my meal but for the price and portion size, it's not a place I will be visiting more often to keep my wallet fat! Absolutely loved B&D Authentic Vietnamese Chinese! We tried the Bún Bò Huế, lemongrass chicken, and the coconut rice cake, and everything was so flavorful and comforting. We came on a Saturday for lunch. Service was fast but not super attentive. Food came out fast as well. Tum Thai ($15) was not super crunchy. I liked the strong garlic flavour and the sweet sauce Pad see ew ($22) with chicken. The noodles were nice and chewy. Lots of wok hey (fire flavour) which we really enjoyed. Flavour was good but we found it a bit too salty for our liking. Stir fry thai holy basil ($19) with minced pork. This dish was also a bit too salty for me. It was also lacking thai basil flavour. Wouldn't get this again Panang curry ($19) star of the show is the penang curry. It was creamy luscious. Had a punch of flavour. The lime leaves also gave it a bit of sourness. Very clean and quaint store on a corner of fraser street opposite to Slo! This might be the best Thai place I've had so far It specializes in northern thai food (papaya salads) but i'm not a big fan of papaya so I didn't get any. Regardless all the other food I got are 10/10, servers were very attentive and kept refilling our water haha and they serve food super fast as well. The pad thai and dry noodles were perfectly seasoned and big portions, for spicy dishes you'll be able to pick your spice level. The dry noodles come with peanut crumbs, lime slice and a sauce on the side it's more on the refreshing side definitely a good dish in the summer. For drinks I'd recommend the thai milk tea and get the mango sticky rice for dessert! Thai Lemon Tea (not pictured): Our favourite version of this is from Bob Likes Thai Food, and its made with fresh citrus, this tasted artificial - like Thai Nestea Pad see yew: Probably the best dish, but how can you really mess this up? Portion was tiny Pork toast: Pork is negligible, just greasy hard toast with pickled vinegar. The pickled veggies were the best part of this dish Tom kha: A bit too creamy and salty, but taste-wise was not the best, but not terrible. My issue was the amount of aromatic ingredients left in the soup in a SMALL SIZE for $12. of the items were inedible - of course all necessary ingredients for the flavour, but why were they left in the final product? Penang curry: It was okay, not as aromatic as Sawasdee They sat us next to the bar and could not see us even when we raised our hand so it was also impossible to flag down a waitress despite the restaurant being almost empty. My friends and I stopped by for a late post dodgeball session meal here. I've never had Thai food before aside from Thai Express. I didn't really know what to expect. There are lots of different items on the menu, and honestly a lot of them sounded pretty good to me. The Tum Pla Ra and Pad See Ew were the main things I ate with my group. I was very impressed because the flavours were a lot more intense than I had expected it. I had eaten beforehand but the food was good enough that I could have ate a whole plate on my own. Came here the other night, despite lots of reviews saying its best to make a reservation my mom and I tried walking in and they were able to give us a table but with a one hour time limit which felt a bit tight in the beginning but all of the food came out so fast that it ended up not being a problem at all!! To start the server said we should try the deep fried tofu with peanut sauce, which I did not care for at all. I feel like there are so many more flavourful dishes to get, so I would skip this one in the future. We also got the thai milk tea to drink which I love sooo much! It was busy but not packed, the ambience is really laid back which I love. The staff was on it too and the food came out quite quickly and everything was piping hot! We ordered the following from best to not as best but still great and no exaggeration everything was AMAZING and so so flavourful! Addictive! Padang curry (red curry) spicy - so incredible flavourful with perfectly cooked eggplant and prawn. Get the Roti for dipping!! Drunken Noodles with Tofu - I could eat plates of this! The tofu was crispy and soft on the inside and the noodles were chewy and spicy! Salmon sashimi - had flavours like a salmon ceviche, nice and refreshing. Crispy pork - so so tender my god it was good and the dipping sauce was great too. Shrimp wrap - yummy crunch fried bites with a sweet chili dipper. Zab Bite is located on the corner of Fraser and E26th; street parking is easy to find. The restaurant was not too busy on a weekday lunch hour so we were promptly seated. For weekday lunch, they had a small lunch menu that had some of the same items as their regular menu but with a $1+ or so discount. Check your bill at the end though because they charged us the regular price instead of the lunch menu price; they fixed it after we notified them. Serving up Thai cuisine, the plating is very aesthetic and Instagrammable; and the pricing reflects that. They've got a lot of appetizer and dishes that I haven't had in other Thai restaurants before; a lot of stir fries and grilled dishes. I normally get curries at Thai restaurants but Zab Bite does not have many curry options on their menu, so I ended up getting the Pad Thai on their lunch menu - it was not very good, on the dry side and flavor-wise I've had better. We also tried the Crispy Pork Toast which was interesting and pretty dense, best to share with 2-3 others. And the Crispy Grilled Pork was probably the best dish of the ones we tried - the fat to lean ratio gives it a nice bouncy texture and this one is worth getting. And the dipping sauces didn't do much to better the taste either. A new place on Fraser Street and 26th, in Vancouver. It used to be Pho Cilantro, then was Saigon and now it's Zab Bite. The staff are nice, friendly and efficient. The food comes out pretty quickly so make sure you order accordingly as you may not have enough room. You can always order more as you ewt. It is basic inside with a couple of booths and tables. The lighting is good which is wicker style cylinder shaped. The shrimp and the crying tiger ( grilled beef ) were really good. I'd definitely order those again. The spring rolls were good too but not that spectacular. The grilled pork was flavorful with a hint of spice. The inside has a tropical theme going, with lots of bamboo trim. Staff are friendly. I think I heard them speaking Thai. The stir-fri Thai holy basil, which is a signature dish. The spiciness comes in 4 levels: mild, medium, spicy, and Thai spicy. Most Thai places here are "North American spicy" so this raised an eyebrow or two. I had my dish spicy (Level 3) and sure enough, it wasn't exactly Thai spicy, so my buddy and I asked for some red cut chili. This brought the spiciness level to what I remember from Thailand. Zab Bite has been on my wish list for a while, particularly since the place is recommended to me by Thai friends. We finally went there a few weeks ago. It's definitely better than some of the places I tried, but I was expecting the dishes to be spicier tbh. Tum Corn ($18) 6/10 A light and refreshing corn and carrot salad, tangy with nice crunch from the peanut. Has some dried shrimp inside. Was an okay appetizer. Yum Crispy Grilled Pork ($21) 7.5/10 Grilled pork served with dipping sauce. I really enjoyed the sweet-sour sauce (cilantro, lime, thai chili). Pork itself was very juicy and not smelly. Yum Salmon Zab ($28) 7/10 Thai version of salmon sashimi, where the fish is marinated with the same sauce as the grilled pork one. This was also pretty good though salmon texture was a bit too mushy. Tom Zab ($25) 7/10 Pork spicy sour soup served with rice powder and mushroom. Don't get me wrong, the soup was good, I wish it was actually spicy though. Our friend (who was from Thailand) specifically asked for Thai spicy, but I felt like they gave us one tailored for the local taste? Pad See Ew Beef ($25) 7/10 Stir fry wide noodle with beef and brocolli with soy-oyster based sauce. Nice wok hey and plenty of protein for the portion. reminds me of kwe tiau (in a good way) with slightly more sticky-translucent noodle. Mango Sticky Rice ($13) 5/10 I was expecting traditional mango sticky rice (which I prefer, sometimes simple is best) but they tried to be fancy with the pandan infused rice and crispy crackers. Super busy on a Sat night, a bit too loud for my liking as you could barely hear the person across from you and everyone had to raise their voice to be heard. 1.5hr dining limit for us but as it died down they didn't enforce it. We shared the grilled pork, tom zab, and dry mix thick noodle. Would definitely recommend choosing a thinner noodle for the dry mix as the thick noodle was a wide glass noodle and so bit of a mushy texture in contrast with the rest of the ingredients. Tom zab soup wasn't spicy at all (we asked for mild) and was very flavourful and aromatic with the kaffir lime leaves. As someone who can't handle spice, I loved this soup! Delicious meaty mushrooms too. Grilled pork was divine. I could eat dishes of this for days, along with the dipping sauce! Service was excellent, someone constantly came by to top up my water. Will definitely be back to try more dishes! Oh and parking was so easy for a Saturday night. I want to love this place but I think consistency is not there yet. I was the first customer and it still took some time for the order to be taken and food to be served. I ordered the pad gra pao (Thai holy basil with minced pork). That's the dish I usually order to see how authentic or good the place is. It's a common dish all over Thailand. I was really disappointed when it came out. There was barely any basil leaves or chili etc. just a mound of minced meat. The fried egg didn't have crispy edges. It looked so plain. Not that saucy either. Later I found a couple of basil leaves underneath the meat. It was not very good at all. I also ordered the crispy grilled pork highly recommended by other yelpers. This was really nice. I loved the dipping sauce which came with it. Unfortunately it took about 20 minutes for it to be served. When I asked about the status of the dish, the staff then told me it was made to order. That's why it took 15-20 minutes to be ready. I wish the staff would inform customers about the wait time when being ordered. Or have that indicated on the menu. The upside was I got full by the time the crispy grilled pork came out so I tried some and then packed the leftovers. The crispy grilled pork sauce made the pad gra pao taste so much better when I had them the next day. Pro tip: no blinds on windows so avoid tables where the sun shines directly in. Service was a bit slow. Make reservations as it got busy by 1230 pm on weekdays. read more

I found this restaurant while browsing Instagram, and it sounds very interesting to me since they offer Northern Thai food. What I ordered was: Assorted Appertizers Veggie Spring Rolls, Crispy Pork Toasts, Shrimp Wraps, and Pork Jerky -The spring roll and shrimp wrap were just okay. The pork toast was better than the other items; however, I prefer a little bit more filling. The pork jerky was also just okay. Compared to the pork jerky in Thailand, it was more like grilled pork than pork jerky. Nam Tok Crispy Grilled Pork -The grilled pork salad was the best dish. The pork was juicy and well-marinated. The herbs and lime brought out strong flavors. I really liked this dish. Pad See Ew -There are a lot of ingredients, including the pork I chose, that taste really good Mango Sticky rice -The presentation was great. The sticky rice had a green color, and there was a small paper umbrella placed on top of the mango. However, the mango was not ripe, and the sticky rice needed more coconut flavor. The coconut milk on the side was not enough, and the sticky rice needed to cool down more as it was hot. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing dish. Overall, my experience at Zabbite was just okay. I hope they improve some dishes, and I will visit again to try different ones. read more

Decided to try Zab Bite, a NE Thai restaurant, that took over the space from Saigon Taste. They're next door to Grand View Szechuan. We dropped in on a Wednesday evening (7:30pm). Make reservations because it was packed. Waters were constantly refilled. There's a lunch menu (Monday to Thursday, 11:30am to 2:00pm) but you only save a few bucks. - Virgin "be salamati" ($7.00) - refreshing. - Crispy roti ($3.00) - light, flaky but greasy. - 3x Jasmine rice ($2.00) - ordered three bowls to share between our group of four. - Pad see ew ($21.00) - my favourite dish. Wide, flat noodles had a great chew/elasticity. - Panang curry ($19.00) - zero spice level. Eggplant slices but wish there was more substance. - Yum crispy grilled pork ($21.00) - juicy but the sauce really elevated the flavours. Small portion. - Nam tok crying tiger ($29.00) - short ribs came out medium rare. Again, small portion. - Mango sticky rice parfait ($13.00) - sticky rice was interestingly infused with pandan. Ambiance is bright and clean with a modern interior. Space is quite small and tight so reservations is highly recommended to secure a table. I find the noise level high not from music but from people talking. I think the place needs to improve on acoustics. Servers were very busy but nonetheless did a good job to accommodate us. Love Thai food and came here after seeing posts on IG. It didn't disappoint. Gosh our group of 6 was in heaven! It was so good bite after bite. *Nam Tok Crispy Grilled Pork $21: oooo love the crispy texture and the sauce it's in. Crispy skin is not thick like other versions of crispy pork but there's a crisp texture to it. *Crying Tiger $27: gosh so so delicious esp with the Thai seeet chili dipping sauce *Boat Noodle $24: deep- flavored beef soup tastes like it's cooked in herbs. *Stir Fry Thai Holy Basil $19: ground pork recommended as it is the original version accdg to our server. Very very delicious & flavourful *Laab Moo $18: unusual salad dish...if only all salads are made with meat and less veggies. *Pad Thai $20: although a staple in Thai food, this dish elicited a "wow" from our party. *Pad See Ew $21: yummy and delicious Would have eaten buckets of rice with above dishes if only I'm not on a carb diet. read more

One of the best Thai restaurants in Vancouver in a local scene that does not have the greatest quality Thai food compared to many other cosmopolitan North American cities. My wife & I visited for dinner after confirming that they can make some dishes vegan -- which mostly means no fish sauce and egg for the already vegetarian dishes. We ordered: -Green curry with tofu ($19) -- we ordered this Thai spicy, which came with a decent kick but could've been spicier for out tastes. Regardless, the curry was rich, complex and wonderfully balanced, coming with 6 large pieces of deep fried tofu and sliced eggplant. It would have been good to have some more/additional vegetables, but, regardless, this was fantastic. -Thai Hot & Herbal Stir-Fry with tofu ($19; made vegan by omitting egg) -- very tasty, lightly sweet and very nicely savoury stirfry amped up by the peppercorns and Thai herbs, coming with gai lan, baby corn, and 6 large pieces of deep fried tofu, served with a side of steamed rice. Probably the least interesting of the 3 dishes we ordered, but still damn delicious. -Pad see ew with tofu ($22; made vegan by omitting the egg) -- this came with perfectly cooked wide rice noodles, copious amounts of gai lan, and 6 large pieces of deep fried tofu. Wonderfully flavoured, amply portioned -- top-notch pad see ew. Portions were plentiful and prices were reasonable compared to Thai food prices in Vancouver. The way they cooked the tofu for all 3 dishes was especially satisfying. The quality was top-notch and perhaps only rivalled by Kin Kao (both locations but especially Song) in town for vegan-friendly Thai food. The service was also fantastic -- extremely friendly, attentive, and clear. Great spot. Highly recommended. read more
