Best Pad Thai in the city. Hands down. It's not too sweet like other pad thai that uses artificial sauces. Perfectly umami. I would skip the shrimp next time (extra $4), and opt for chicken. Shrimp was big and juicy but not an integral ingredient in this dish. Priced higher than other pad thai options and adding chilli flakes is unfortunately extra, but worth the treat epically if this is what you're craving. I've probably gotten this takeout about a dozen times in the last few years and the taste is very consistent. The amount sometimes varies a bit. On a weeknight, we waited 20 minutes for a table. Small restaurant, less than 30 seats. Food comes out pretty fast and if you sit at the bar, you would be able to see the chef cooking up your meal fresh. We got the green curry too which was delicious. We were stuffed with just the 2 dishes and a bowl of rice. read more

Service was attentive throughout. We ordered the green apple softshell crab salad, chicken green curry, lamb massaman, and tiger beef. The softshell crabs were on point -- crisp and flavorful. The chicken and lamb were both tender, and the lamb portion was generous. The tiger beef, though, came out quite tough. Flavor-wise, a very sweet-forward profile on the salad, chicken, and lamb tended to mask everything else. We had asked the kitchen to dial back the sweetness, but it seems the sauces and pastes are pre-sweetened, so there wasn't much they could do. We left a little disappointed -- we'd been hoping the curries would let the spices and aromatics come through. At $145, including two green teas and tip, it felt steep for a meal where we were hoping for more authentic, less sugar-forward flavors. I got so excited with the food, forgot to take photos. The drunken noodle is my favourite! Super flavourful with tender chunky shrimp. And for our friends, they loved the green curry vegetables, perfect balance of sweetness and spicy. We also had basil stir fried eggplant, tofu pad Thai, and the gailan with mushroom was delightful. This is a go to spot for us for Thai food on the drive. Although there's no reservations, we always manage to find a table with a short wait or at the bar. My favourite noodle dish is their pad sew ew but you can never go wrong with their pad Thai. Also love the starter pork belly-- not too fatty, perfect amount of crispiness. They aren't joking with their medium spice level. As someone who loves spicy food, this is on the verge of 'being too hot to handle' 'give me some milk'. If you love a kick, ask for medium. Small Thai restaurant near the northern end of Commercial Dr. More of a modern vibe and interior, different than Thai places I've been to. Menu does have the usual Thai noodles and curry in some form, but more limited in terms of choice of protein. They do have some starters that haven't seen in other places. Got their crispy pork belly and Thai sausage to start. The pork belly slices are coated with a salty and garlic-y seasoning and they provide a spicy and sour dipping sauce. The acidiness of the dipping sauce helps to balance out the fat and salty pork belly. I liked it The Thai sausage is sausage casing stuffed with a mix of sticky rice, minced pork and garlic. The pieces are shaped into balls, and also have a slight sour taste. Never had it before so good to try it, but probably won't order this again. For main, I got the drunken noodle, which comes with prawns. Got 5 big prawns. Asked for mild spiciness which was tolerable, although I still felt the spice on the first bite. My family loves the food here and their kindness after an allergy incident of mine pushes this thai restaurant to the top of our family favourites. Unfortunately, there is something unidentified that still causes a reaction from me but the rest of my family is more than happy to visit again and again. The favourites of the night were the pad see ew with their fresh rice sheets stir fried in a subtle sauce with plenty of chicken. Same can be said about their green curry which was the perfect level of spiciness that allowed for ultimate flavour! Also, the pork skewers were very tasty, lightly sweet, and their stir fried pork mince was quite a large portion of meat and went great with some white rice. Delightful bright clean atmosphere with huge windows, delicious food presented beautifully, and motivated friendly staff. The Pad See Ew had very gelatinous noodles that were a more "challenging" consistency than I'm used to, but the sauce and spice and accompanying vegetables were good. I tried the Panang curry as well and it was a delicious rich curry with subtle flavors. Save room for dessert! WOW! Feels like we've stumbled onto a gem of a Thai restaurant - Thaitanium of top-notch quality, if I may - when placing a last minute order for delivery late last night! The flavorful, spicy and delish dishes were just what the doctor ordered, especially given that we're presently down with COVID-19. Even the onset of anosmia (loss of smell) and ageusia (loss of taste) due to the infection couldn't ruin this treat for me! Slurrppp. The Tom Yum Soup is hands down one of the best we've ever had, and that's saying something because we've tried the soup at at least a couple of hundred places spread across North America, Asia and Europe over the last decade! Spice level 7 on 10 was perfect to get high on the taste, aroma and bite of the ingredients, all of which skilfully flirted with the extra sensitive tear glands but without opening their floodgates! Kudos. After hogging on the food that we had ordered just recently, today we ended up placing yet another order a while ago before posting this review. Our group stayed near the area during our trip to Vancouver. And they randomly chose this spot. Very limited seating inside. Has a nice clean vibe to it. The servers were very accommodating to our large party with small children. We ordered lots of dishes here. From the Pad Thai, To the crispy pork belly. The chicken wings were a hit. Excited to try this place due to the reviews. Tried the Pad Thai and chicken cashew. Came up to $38. Now as far as Asian restaurants go, this is on the expensive side for an average meal. To my dismay, the serving sizes were very small. The chicken was more of an appetiser size although the Pad Thai was closer to average. While the taste was good, the meal itself didn't look very appetising. About 3 prawns in my noodles, lots of egg to make up for the rest of the protein. read more

Apparently, one of the servers is a big fan and they reserve a day in the week to only play Ariana Grande songs. 2 of the dishes we ordered were the crispy pork belly appie and ground pork with eggplant. Both were delicious and I highly recommend! However, the crispy pork belly dipping sauce could use a little bit more zing. It needed something like vinegar or lemon to cut through the fat. Very good quality Thai food, but considerably overpriced and not all that generous portions. I've never been too impressed with Vancouver's Thai food offerings. There's a general lack of authenticity with most of it, it tends to be unreasonably priced (compared to other Asian cuisines), and with small portions. Kin Kao seemed to be rated very well, so I decided to try them out, despite the prices. They offer a few default vegan dishes, and others that they can make vegan. So I did a take-out order for dinner one night. We got the vegan stirfry ($16 plus tax), the yellow curry with tofu ($17 plus tax), and the pad Thai (with tofu, made vegan; $19 plus tax). We ordered the latter two dishes Thai spicy. They quoted me about 50 minutes for pick-up -- quite a long time. The food was waiting when I arrived for pick-up. The yellow curry was very tasty, appropriately rich, and amply spiced. It only comes with tofu and potatoes -- it'd be nice to get something else in here for variety, like carrot or peppers. But the curry itself is so tasty that we didn't mind too much. 4/5 The vegan stirfry was solid, coming with a mild, brown sauce that was savoury and subtly sweet. It'd have been nice to get some green veggies in here, as the only real vegetables in here are some red peppers, along with tofu, onion, green onion, and celery. 3.5/5 The pad Thai was the highlight for me. Wonderfully spicy, with a killer tamarind character, with a nice sprinkle of peanuts and perfectly cooked noodles. Firm tofu accompanies this nicely. Really solid pad Thai, but this was one of the most overpriced noodle dishes I've had in some time. 4.5/5 All in all, very tasty food, but terribly overpriced (even more than other Thai places) such that I won't be too motivated to come here often, given that a few other Thai places in town are just as good and more reasonably priced (e.g., Sawasdee, Bai Bua). Try it out for a treat if you have the cash to burn. read more

Oof, I usually love Kin Kao but we recently ordered takeout delivery from them and the portions were way smaller than usual. They don't have huge portions to begin with and at $20+ plate, it can get expensive for two mains. The Pad Thai looked pretty sad in the gigantic takeout box they placed it in. It just wasn't the usual size that they prepare, I don't know what went wrong? It tasted good and the spice was perfect for us. But it just really felt like they cheaped out on the noodles. My partner ordered the pork gailan and noticed there was noticeably less pork in the order than usual. What gives? The order we got today was definitely below their previous standards. Is the restaurant punishing people for ordering takeout delivery? Honestly, we are wondering about that, lol. But if that is the case, they should stop using delivery services and just require people to personally pick up or eat in. I know a few restaurants that don't use delivery services and I still support them because I know it's hard for smaller businesses to use them. So i recommend that if it isn't working, just stop using them! Your faithful clientele will adapt. I think we may have better luck eating in at the restaurant. We will probably take a break from Kin Kao until we are able to stop by their actual restaurant versus ordering take out. read more

Had been wanting to visit this place for the longest time and finally had a chance to visit last night! We (party of 4) came on a Thursday night around 7PM, it was quite busy and it took about half an hour before we got seated. (We made good use of our time because while we waited for our name to be called, we visited the fried chicken place next door and tried their BOMB chicken thighs!) For our drinks, we ordered a beer on tap ($7.50), a singha beer ($7), and a thai iced tea ($5). The pale ale beer on tap was delicious- there was a really light and crispy taste to it! We ordered the Chicken Wings ($12), Pad Thai with Chicken ($17), Larb ($16), Yellow Curry ($16) with Jasmine Rice ($1) and an order of Roti ($4) added. We also topped off our meal with the Mango Sticky Rice ($7.50). The Chicken Wings were coated in a night sweet and spicy sauce, however, it wasn't anything too special. The Pad Thai with Chicken was enjoyable, but I found that it had lacked flavours and didn't really have depth to the dish (especially when compared to my experience at Sawasdee). We got the Larb with minced pork, and I found it a little sour for my liking. We also thought that the dish would have been on top of toasted rice (so it would be a rice platter), but we found out that it was only sprinkled with toasted rice bits which was aimed to give it more of a crunch. Lastly, the Yellow Curry was a little too spicy for our liking. We asked for no spice at all, but every bite we ate, the dish became spicier and spicier. The side of Roti was also served very burnt. I unfortunately had to send it back as it was quite burnt and extremely oily tasting, but fortunately, they were able to remake a new order for us (I suspect that they had fried the Roti earlier in the day but no one wanted it, and when we ordered it, they re-fried it thus causing it to be burnt and extremely oily). We finished off our dish with a mango sticky rice ($7.50). I really enjoyed this dish, but just found it a little pricey as I know other places that serve mango sticky rice in a larger portion and with a cheaper price. As well, when we received the bill, we checked it and realized that they had accidentally charged us an extra mango sticky rice and an extra coconut creme brulee! They quickly fixed the error for us, but make sure you guys check your receipts to prevent yourself from overpaying! Overall, my experience here was enjoyable - the service was kind and the food came promptly, but the food here just might not be best suited to our taste buds, and we most likely will not be returning. read more

Had tried left overs from a friend who raves about this place and had heard from other people thaf the food here was good. Food definitely tastes authentic and since it's located on commercial drive, it definitely has a hipster vibe which is why I think their prices are also a tad bit higher than your usual mom and pop's kinda Thai place. Service was solid and unobtrusive. Tried their ginger beer and Thai iced tea. Loved the iced tea (it was super creamy and sweet, it was a treat). It's made with half-half cream so no wonder it tastes good lol. Ginger beer was refreshing, but I really liked that iced tea. Ordered a side of their Thai fried chicken wings. The flavor was really good but they could be crispier. When they arrived I could tell they looked a bit shrivelled up. To me a nice fried chicken wing has to have some crunch...there wasn't any batter so the skin is just kinda there but not that satisfying crispy skin I was looking for. I was hoping more of a pok pok style kinda of chicken wing. I am not disappointed that I ordered it but I won't get them again. The papaya salad was really good. Nice and crispy and had a nice kick to it (we got mild....so if you really can't handle spice u may need to double confirm that it won't have any kick to it). Panaeng chicken curry was my favorite food dish of the night. So flavourful and chicken was nice and tender). As I was eating everything all I could think was "man, how did Mae nam get so many awards for best restaurant and is way over priced for what it is?" I digress. The pad Thai was my least favourite dish of the night. It was unremarkable. Added the prawns which were a nice size. I found this dish tasted better the following day reheated (it's like more flavour got soaked in). All in all a solid Thai place in Vancouver. It's right next door to the popular down low chicken place. I don't know if I'll be rushing back anytime soon as the portion size is a bit smaller and more expensive than a popular Thai place on Main Street. But I could see myself popping by to grab an iced tea and a small order or their pork bites to go (I've been told it's suppose to be amazing and better than their wings). Pretty good spot for some Thai, but it's a little out of the way if you're in downtown Vancouver. I wouldn't say it's the most authentic Thai cuisine I've ever had, but the flavors were bold and exciting. You can judge a Thai restaurant by the char on their satay, and I would say this place hit its mark here. The beef satay had burnt edges, but super tender and medium-done insides, and were marinated in soy and/or fish sauce so they had a lot of flavor per bite. I would say this was better than some of the street satay in Thailand. It doesn't matter which city/country I'm in, a Thai restaurant must serve Thai cuisine with Thai bird chilies - no exceptions. This place definitely lost a star due to the lack of proper peppers. I asked for my curry to be "thai spicy" but it came out very mild. Being on the west side of the continent, I figured they'd have a closer-to-home field advantage, so it was a surprise to me when they didn't hit this soft ball. Mango and sticky rice for dessert. Can't blame the mangoes for not being in season, but good thing the rice and coconut milk was decent enough to carry the meal. It's hard to go wrong with this classic, and this place does an okay job. The rice portion was pretty large though, so I suggest asking for half the sticky rice next time. In terms of atmosphere, this is more of a casual, modern hangout spot for the younger crowds. I absolutely loved the music they were playing that night. It might have been someone's Pandora or Spotify account cause it was an interesting mix of mainly hip hop with random pop songs thrown in. Its kinda small place, but there was no line when we showed up around 7:00 on a weekday. This was so awful, I had to make an official Yelp account just to give this a proper review and air out my dissatisfaction. I had such high hopes after seeing pictures from their new location in Mt. Pleasant. I accidentally went to the wrong location and needless to say, I definitely won't be trying their new location. I had the papaya salad, chicken wings, northeastern style steak and finally red curry duck. The papaya salad should've been called vegetables in fish sauce. It was just salty, tart and very much missing the sweetness from the papaya. The chicken wings... astounding that 5 wings would cost $14. I think they gave us 7 instead because they were TINY. Hardly much meat on the wings! The sauce on this was actually good though. Northeastern style steak: For an astounding $21, you'll get the driest pieces of steak ever. The steak strips were lukewarm to cold when it arrived. My partner and I ate 2 pieces and really struggled to finish the rest... it was a lot of work to chew through. It's served in a bed of lettuce and for that price, I'm not sure if we're supposed to eat it with the lettuce? Take a look at the picture-- you'll see the meat looks dry like jerky. Red curry duck: There was something really off with the duck. It tasted like it was cooked a day or two ago, put in the fridge and heated up in the curry sauce. Hard to chew because it was overcooked as well. This was a very mediocre dish, nothing special about it. We couldn't finish it. The servers were too busy preparing the take out orders and were doing the bare minimum with us. They were just pleasant, quality checked after we received our food, took our payment. I was expecting better service especially at the price point but I guess they just want to do the job and go home. In the end, I feel awful that we spent so much $$$ here and we weren't even full. I really tried to like this place but I can't justify coming back. P.S. We ate at the bar. I came in with pretty high expectations after seeing good reviews across the board. I have to say I am pretty disappointed overall. The crispy pork belly is juicy and the dip is garlicy and yummy, but the cilantro on top looks pretty dead. I thought maybe the heat from the pork belly cooked it a little so that's okay. Asked for extra cilantro, but server gave us mostly green onion with a little bit cilantro, which is also not very fresh. Larb and pad Thai tastes pretty standard. We asked for Jasmine rice to eat with the minced pork larb. The rice is so dry, ok perhaps they use the dry rice for fried rice? We asked for sticky rice for replacement, which is also dry and tastes more like rubber than sticky rice. The servers are polite and responsive to our requests, but they never initiate to check on us, we had to get their attention even though they don't look super busy. We're always on the look-out for a Thai restaurant that serves authentic Pad Thai -- not the ketchupy kind most places serve here in Vancouver. Flavour was there but I would've wanted a little bit more sauce. Papaya salad was refreshing and delicious. Just beware of eating the chopped chili. Beef stir fry was delicious too. It is served a bit medium but the flavours are fantastic. Had the creme brulee for dessert and the combination of coconut and pandan reminded me of my favorite thai dessert - TaKo. Exceptional. My cousin brought me here and he said "its my go to Thai spot". Now I really love Thai, and my cousin has never let me down on his Vancouver food recommendations, this was no exception. We started out with the sour rib bites, legend has it, there are ingredients that are Fedexed over from the homeland from the owners grandmother. I really hope this is the case. The ribs were unlike any I've ever had. Not that they were that great (they were good), just so different, you have to try them out at least once. We ordered the Pad Tai noodles (no pad si yu at dinner), red curry with chicken, and some dish with ground pork and diced green bean dish (didn't get the name unfortunately, it was phenomenal). I have found back in LA my local Thai spots don't make the food all that spicy, not like I remember anyway. So when I said make it medium to hot, my cousin and Forest (our waitress) politely told me to slow my roll. Thank goodness they did. We went with mild and the curry mild:medium. When I took my first I realized this was a real Thai experience. I was sure glad I had that Thai iced tea to cool me off. Even though there was a constant warm glow in my mouth and at times could've almost (almost) been uncomfortable, the food was absolutely delicious and the service was incredible. By the end of the meal, I was stuffed (just the perfect level of stuffed) and my mouth was telling my brain, "why have you been denying me these incredible flavors.
