I would like to give this place 4 stars but I can not and let me tell you why. The wait time to get our wine, dinners bread and entree was a bit long but that was most likely because of the large party in the backroom. I can let that go. The sourdough bread being the highlight of my meal was not expected but I did ask for the second basket :). For my entree, I ordered the special rib-eye steak which was cooked really well but why so salty? My wife likes salt but her telling me that my steak is salty tells you something.. The sides were good which came with a fancy looking hash brown and some steam vegetables. I can not speak for my wife's entree but she did mentioned it was on the dry side. She order the special fish on that day. On the positive front, the chocolate cake desert was superb! Would I come back here? Man, I thought I had reviewed this place last year. Sorry. Okay, we weren't regular diners; we had a party of over ONE HUNDRED people being fed this last week. We did the same thing last year, and it made a really strong impression on me. I shall try to break this down as follows: 1. Service. The owner (Zahir I assume...) constantly walks around, making sure everything is perfect. He does a great job, is super nice and is helpful. The other servers are equally awesome. Great service! 2. Bar. The bar is in a little room off to the side. Good drinks, nice bartender. I might just have to drink some more there. 3. Food. Yeah, this is what we're waiting for. Since we were in such a massive party, we had limited choices. I stuck with the prime rib (what I had last year as well...) because I figured why mess with something delicious? First off, it had a nice flavorful coating on the outside. The inside was perfectly cooked and tender - a nice medium rare for the most part. The flavor was delicious. It was a VERY large portion, honestly, and awesome. It had some asparagus with it that was delicious as well and some mashed potatoes that were very, very good. I really meant to Yelp this place last year with five stars, but it slipped my mind. I'm glad I remembered this year. Admittedly we were the most shabbily dressed out of the parties but we had to keep asking a different server for bread, more water, the check etc. Our server showed up after the fact. I was a little peeved that we were charged $2 for bacon that we asked to be put on the side from the carbonara because I do not eat bacon. We had clearly told the server that I do not eat bacon and would like it on the side. He put the bacon from the carbonara in a bowl and plunked in on the prime rib plate and charged us $2 for it. The other waitress apologized and took it off for us. We arrived here on a Friday night around 6pm for dinner and surprisingly, there was only one other table. The restaurant is pretty big! Lots of tables and there is also another room with a bar once you enter the restaurant. Drinks: We got 2 mango mojitos & 2 stacked(?) margaritas (~10 each). So good! You could actually taste the alcohol in them. What's the point of getting cocktails if it just tastes like juice right?! Food: To start, we got the clam chowder ($5) & pear salad($7). The clam chowder was creamy and flavorful. I like how it came out hot! I hate when my soups come out just warm or room temperature. The pear salad had a very light dressing and came with walnuts/thinly sliced pears & blue cheese. However, I opted for no cheese. I liked it, but it was a pretty small portion. My boyfriend and I both ordered the 12 oz prime rib medium rare which came with potatoes, veggies(zucchini & carrot), and au jus. ($27) Note: If you don't like your meat pink, something is wrong with you. The prime rib was soft, juicy, and seasoned well. Needless to say, I cleared my entire plate. Service: Our server was great! There had been so many restaurants that opened here in the past and none lasted. It led us to think maybe this spot was cursed. We were glad to see Zahir's took over and gave this property a facelift. We decided to do a test drive tonight to see how the food fared. The restaurant is nicely decorated inside and out. Very friendly service. Our water glasses were always filled. Philly cheesesteak was good. The meat was tender without any fatty pieces. Yes! The bread was slightly toasted just how I liked it. The shrimp cocktail was surprisingly a substantial meal of its own. The sauce was a bit sweet. It needed more horseradish. My girlfriend wanted to take me somewhere slightly more upscale than most of the other restaurants in this area. This was a good find! The calamari was a perfect way to start the night. We ended up getting the New Orleans Chicken and the Zahir Steak. They had a sea bass on special that I regret not getting. The chicken was pretty good, not great. The steak was amazing and I had to steal a few bites from my girlfriend. The veggies and rice pilaf were lacking in flavor. They were quite plain. The steak came with this delicious fry battered potato...soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Wish I had that as my side! Their mojitos were decent. When they didn't have what we wanted to drink the bartender came out and asked for my likes and dislikes to get a better idea of what kind of birthday drink to make me. Mr. Zahir came out and greated us which always adds a nice touch to any dining experience. The place was kind of empty and could use some more pizzazz. The We both happened to order the New York Steak special. It was stuffed with blue cheese and crap mixture. Because Blue Cheese is so strong you couldn't tell if there was crab or not. I ordered my steak medium rare and it came out medium. My friend ordered his medium and it was done. If you are serving steaks its mandatory to get that right! Maybe it's not the first time that we've been to a fancy restaurant (I think it was though), but it sure felt like it. Not too fancy, but pretty fancy for us. Originally we were going to try this place out years ago.. and my boyfriend got me all excited, but then he did a 180 and changed his mind.. The appeal was lost for him. But, I'm glad that we went now instead of then because it woudld've been a completely different experience. I don't think you should take your significant other to a place like this when you're young (although you could), but it's a great first fancy and future fancy date restaurant to go to when you're a bit more grown up with an actual salary regardless even if it's not the most expensive place in the world. It's quite charming. But, if you did go young: maybe you'll get a great experience out of it as well. ANYWAYS.. So we walk in and as we're being seated, this candle lady comes out of nowhere to put one on our table. I thought it was a nice touch, but my boyfriend thought it was hilarious. (I mean I guess you do that beforehand, but it was quite empty when we first came.. so there was no reason: why they shouldn't seat us right away). O R D E R S . . My boyfriend got the Prawns Fettuccine which had Tiger prawns, organic Roma tomatoes, red onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, scallions, roasted red bell pepper. The only thing the menu doesn't state it comes with is: cheese on top A LOT OF IT.. and he hated that, said it, made his dish taste like pizza.. he couldn't avoid it, tried.. but it just melted and eventually everything mixed altogether. Now I ordered the Cioppino from the pasta side of the menu. Which included the fresh catch of the day (which happened to be salmon, unless it was actually red snapper), mussels, clams and prawns, tomato seafood broth & crostinis (more like two garlic bread slices). That was at market price. There were many things going on my plate. I really loved everything, but I just LOVE LOVE LOVE the sauce, and the pasta.. seriously the sauce was the best part.. but, I was trying really hard to finish everything else that I didn't really get to savor it all in. What I really appreciated was the presentation of both our plates and the fact that they used FRESH rosemary to garnish.. The only cons which I don't mind were the scallops. They were slightly overcooked. I grew up with it being overcooked: so I'm not fussy about it, but for some people they might not like it. My boyfriend would've preferred it seared. I think with scallops: you just can't cook it in the pan the whole time (it'll cook even after the heat is off.. but if it was frozen that's another topic).. The salmon or whatever fish it was: pretty great. But, although all the other seafood aspects were great.. I honestly wouldn't care for any of it.. but the sauce. Probably the best cioppino sauce ever and it worked the way it did because it was a pasta dish instead of the typical soupy version. So it was on the thicker side. And it was just amazing: blind blowing goodness. However my boyfriend said he would go again despite how he felt about his plate. Somehow the service and just the ambiance was quite right for us both, but mainly for him. Even with the amount of people there: it was pretty quiet or at least that night. (They all talked very low..). I'm not sure if you're going to get the same experience, but we went on a Thursday night if that helps for reference if you're possibly looking for a quiet dinner together. Just don't bring your loud drunk friends for happy hour (which they have here, and you should be fine). Frankly what I loved about it besides the food is that it didn't feel like snobby people were around and it was fancy, but not so fancy where I'd be judged. Because quite honestly: I can dress like a lady, but I can't eat like I lady if I tried: I'm quite messy and I like to use my hands. I don't think I'd ever want to go somewhere so fancy: I couldn't use my hands (there are places like that, I kid you not). I'm glad we didn't order anything prior to our meals.. we would've been dead full. Service and food was great. I'd go here again. Tip if you're going to order the cioppino: don't eat four slices of bread that they give you.. even if it's truly scrumptious.. because you will regret losing some of that tummy space for more sauce. read more

3.5 star for the food and 4 stars for the service. This is a new restaurant, we came in and could smell the remainder scent of the paint. The deco was simple but the room was spacious, it's actually a good setting for banquete. The service was courteous and attentative and the owner also came to check on us a couple times, making us feel that every customer is important to them. Thumbs up to that! When we were leaving, the waiter opened the door for us, which is another bonus point. We tried the prime ribs and the veal piccata. The prime ribs came with a very generous cut, thick and huge, but also not very well cooked (understandably due to its cut). The out skirt was overcooked but the center was too pink for medium rare. The veal piccata on the other hand was much better, creamy sauce with generous amount of mushrooms. We were too full to try any desserts, but overall, it was a nice dining experience. read more

But I must admit that when it comes to fine food and atmosphere, I generally head up north to my friends in the city where where the nosh is pretty darn good! HOWEVER, recently my BFF and I decided to have a nice to dinner after work and although the usual decision is to head to the local Italian joint - we decided to give Zahirs a try. WOW! If I could use expletives (in a good way) on Yelp! I would.... From the delicious meal, to the soft pleasant "large city" dining atmosphere, to the divine service and the occasional "check in" from Zahir himself - we had an absolutely delightful night out! I generally try to be a "lady" and leave a little on my plate...but since I wasn't on a date and had noone to judge me...(although my BFF was giving me a stare down as I started to literally scrape my plate with my fork), I cleaned the plate bare! It was that yummy! We shared the New Orleans Chicken and Pecan Crusted Chicken. Both meals were excpetional. To be perfectly honest, I would never have come in here on my own. From the street this is a really unassuming place that would never get a second look from me. But a girl took me here and our meal was great. I was surprised by how nice the restaurant was, with fine table cloths and all that (the steak knives are from Ikea, but whatever works, right?) We sat a the bar. The house wine is pretty good. The had the New York steak special that night and it was very delicious and filling, although I do think the sauce on my steak was a tad salty. I also had the clam chowder, which was excellent. The actual restaurant and the bar area are separated by a wall in this place and the two have completely different vibes. But both vibes are good and are appropriate for what they're trying for. Food here is a bit in the pricey side, but it's actually a really nice restaurant, so it's not like it's overpriced. This is my new favorite restaurant in the San Jose area. I've been there twice now, over the past few weeks, and both times was very impressed. The atmosphere is nice and quiet. The food is fantastic, and the staff is great. Steak Zahir is a very tasty filet mignon with a dark gravy sauce over it. When I ordered, Mr. Zahir came out and said if I'd found a better steak in the area, this would be on the house. It was so tasty and tender there was no way I could criticize it in any way. I didn't even need a knife to cut it. A fork was all I needed. For the price, it's the best steak I've found. I'll be coming back many times. read more

I came here for a company lunch with about 25-30 people, and they gave us a set menu with our choosing of entrees. We had (complimentary) bread, appetizers: calamari, stuffed mushrooms, baked potato skins, fried zucchini, and bruschetta; Caesar salad, prawn fettuccine for my entree, and chocolate cake (and tiramisu) for dessert. Bread was average. The calamari wasn't very crispy, but I don't know whether that's because they made it all at the same time and it's been sitting there for a while or whether it actually tastes bad. The stuffed mushroom was okay; I couldn't tell what was inside it but it was pretty good. Baked potato skin didn't have much flavor, and the bruschetta had way too much vinegar on it. The fried zucchini was fine (can't really mess that up), and so was the Caesar salad. The salad didn't have too much dressing on it, so it was light and pretty good. It didn't taste too fresh though, and the lettuce wasn't the most tasty. 3.5 stars for salad, 3 stars for other appetizers. My prawn fettuccine was pretty good; I'd give it 3.5 stars. The plating was pretty nice, and the prawns (there were 6 of them) were pretty good, although again, they weren't too fresh (couldn't take the meat in the tail out very easily). The fettuccine itself was average, and there were a lot of bell peppers and mushrooms. That was definitely good. Also the pasta was almost a soup - there was way too much liquid I think. Flavor was okay and not too strong. The chocolate cake was way too sweet, and it had too much cream and not enough cake. The tiramisu was pretty spongy, but it also had too much cream. 3 stars for those. Service was fine; pretty average. They filled our water at appropriate times, and they served our food and cleaned our dishes appropriately too. Overall a pretty average place; seems expensive though. Disappointed on all counts. I ordered the Prime Rib and I could not handle more than two bites. It was dry and tough. The steak was hard to chew and hard to digest but easy to help with regular bowel movements. Terrible. I should have asked the leftovers to go so that my dog could sample it. Unluckily, I forgot to do so. It does not matter, Poochie wouldn't have liked it either. I also asked for decaf coffee and I got caffeinated coffee. I am not a fool and can tell the difference. The server lied despite my requests to make sure my coffee had no caffeine. I just got plain regular coffee diluted with some water. Before I left the server acknowledged pouring regular coffee, and as a result I could not sleep all night. Never coming back. Never again. read more

Zahir is a restaurant with conflicting personalities, one that is trying to be fancy but not quite achieving it. Here are some examples. The inside of the restaurant is nice and clean, however it is really big, the light was strong, and there were no divider so it gave us the impression that we were in a dining hall. Tables were covered with white linen and real cloth napkins were used. Yet, there were sheets of paper covering the top of the table cloth, taking away from the classy feel. The service was spotty. The server came to our table and took the cloth napkins from the water glasses and put it on our laps. However, he failed to notice that there was no napkin for my husband. We had to ask several times before he was given one. There were four of us but we were only given 2 servings of butter with our bread...small details but they take away from the experience. The food was decent but a little overpriced. If you don't specifically ask for tap water, you will be charged $7/water bottle. What we ordered: -Stuffed mushroom ($12) - OK but a little overpriced as there were only 4 mushrooms -New England clam chowder ($5/$8) - just so so -Cioppino ($38) - Very good, loaded with seafood. Interesting that it was served over fettuccini -Fettuccini Jambalaya ($28) - bland, don't know how they could call it jambalaya unless it is because of the few sausages added to a pasta dish -Chicken and prawn a la Parga ($28) - OK - Veal Picata ($28) - OK Bread was served piping hot, very good Overall, we were disappointed with the experience considering it was quite an expensive meal. BTW, we were there to celebrate my bday. When my husband asked whether the restaurant would do something special for me, he was told that all they can do was put a candle on dessert if we decided to order one - another disappointment! You weren't only waited on by the first waiter but any waiter walking by would ask if you needed anything else or just ask how everything is. I just walked out of Zahir's Bistro because he ruined our Valentine's Day! I made a reservation at 7 pm. We got there on time and they told us that the tables were not ready yet. They said we can go wait at the bar. I had a drink and my wife started noticing people coming in and getting seated. At first, I was like maybe they have a reason for sitting those people first. I asked the bartender if she could check on if we were going to be seated soon. She went to check with the owner and came back to tell us that the table was not ready yet and they would let us know. I was like ok and had my 2nd drink. At this point we had been waiting for 20 minutes already. Saw another couple come in and got seated right away. That's when my wife went to go check and I came right behind her to let the owner know that I had reservations at 7 and we haven't been seated. The owner said I thought you were only coming in for a drink. I was like uhh no, we were told to wait at the bar and you would come get us. After seeing 3 couples get seated before us, I was trying to be calm. He apologized and sat us at a table. He said he will have someone over to help us right away. We sat there awkwardly for 5 mins waiting for someone to come over to attend to us. No water and no menu at this point. Another 5 mins passes by and another couple sat down after us. I told my wife that if that table gets attended to before us then we are walking out. A few mins later, we see the owner who sat us down went over to give that couple the menu. That was the last straw, I finished my 2nd drink and as a courtesy to not make a scene, I waited for the owner to walk to the side. We got up and I went over to the owner to complain that we sat there for 10 mins and no one ever came to attend to us and that the couple over there got menus before us. I'm a very patient and reasonable person but at this point I was mad and really wanted to go off on him. He was stuttering trying to say he was having someone coming over. Ive always passed through this Restaurant and wondered how it would be. Finally decided to give it a try today for our first anniversary date night. First impression Nice place spacious and clean. When we entered we had to wait a little to be seated however there was only two tables and 3 servers!!!!! We got our table and I was excited with high expectations that the food quality will be satisfying for the $$$ . Ordered Calamari was very rubbery and hard to chew not appetizing at all! Caesar salad was good but had way better that this one other places . Linguine pasta was a Cheesecake Factory quality but double the price ! Nah not impressed at all and the Sauce was watery. My wife and I love this restaurant for their entrees as well as desserts. Be careful though, their bread is also very good so don't fill up too much before the main course. Their prime rib is good but give steak zahir a try as well. The menu is refreshed often to keep things interesting (though sometimes we are sad our favorites are no longer available). A few months late posting this...my husband and I decided to try Zahir's since kids were with grandparents for the weekend. It was a Saturday night in November. As soon as we walked in we were told food would take sometime coming out as there was a party going on. No problem we were not in a hurry. The party was literally in the same main dining room as the rest of the patrons, no divider..etc. They were also singing/ doing Karaoke. It was a bit weird as this was supposed to be a high end dining establishment. The free bread was good and it pretty much ended there. The waiter did take a long time attending to us - but there was a party going on. My husband got the steak which he said was ok. I got a pasta dish with a very very watery sauce - not good at all. Zahir did come around to ask us how the food was and I mentioned my food was not very good. He did comp us with a free dessert. The staff could not handle a party of 20... They seemed very flustered. We were celebrating a birthday and most of us got the prime rib. Service was good/nice but it was definitely slow. I don't think they were used to the volume of guests. There was also not much other patrons. The prime rib unfortunately not amazing either, I felt really disappointed. And especially since we had to pay a 18% tip, I probably would not return. read more
