1/8/23 Somehow I was starting to regret the decision to come here versus the HB location because of the ambiance that just sullied my memory of my first dine-in Zankou experience (HB). It's hard not to compare at the stark difference from ordering to the dirty surroundings that I encountered. Hoping the food will wow me enough to forget (and forgive) all the negatives. Thankfully the wait was quoted at 35 minutes but was called at 11 instead & a staff member went to work & cleaned up the mess that people left behind. It was making me anxious, so after the surroundings were clean, I was more optimistic about eating in. So, fast service but the food didn't quite deliver. Not that we're given the choice to have the meat be medium rare, probably wouldn't have mattered because it came out burnt-hubby's. That's the deal breaker there. My Lule kabobs were dry and somewhat hard. I tried to chop up the grilled tomato & added the hummus AND garlic spread to offset the dryness of the meat--it somewhat helped. The rice was good. I really liked the cucumber salad. I have one skewer left so I'll save it for another meal. Yet another example of a place surviving on popularity alone versus quality. I will not dismiss Zankou so easily, maybe just stick to the one in HB. read more

I came here for lunch today and paid for my meal with my cc and was told "your card was declined". I told her the charge went through because I got my text notification for the charge. I was pretty much told if I want my food I have to tap my cc again. So I figured my two options were either I tap again and get charge twice and dispute the charge later or walk out already paying but with no food, so I tapped my cc again. So while eating my meal I checked my online banking, which of course showed two charges for my meal. Called my bank and was told I was charged twice, so Im having them dispute my second charge. I'm willing to bet they do this a few times a day and that's why I'm never going back. This place is a scam!!! read more

This location of Zankou Chicken utilizes HALAL meats for all their dishes! They have rotisserie chicken plates, pita wraps, traditional Mediterranean plates (chicken tarna, tri tip shawarma, or falafel), and kabob (shish, chicken, or lule) plates. I went with their chicken tarna plate. Chicken Tarna Plate ($15) - This came with plentiful pieces of marinated chicken shawarma, 3 sides, pita bread, and hands down the best garlic sauce I have tried! For my 3 sides I opted for hummus for all 3. The hummus here is so rich, creamy and delicious! It has the perfect consistency and is one of the better ones that I have tried. They have a large casual indoor seating area, so it's a perfect place for work lunches. I visited with some co-workers a few years back and we split their rotisserie chicken family meals, which are an exceptional value. They have several locations through out the southern California area, but this is the only one that I know of that has HALAL meats. read more

I have heard of Zankou Chicken for many years, and even passed by a few of their locations on my way elsewhere, but I never really considered stopping. I justified my decision by saying...just another "chain restaurant". It was Mr. Bs fault, he is now an avid watcher of food vlogs, and this came with such high praise, he decided to make it a priority lunch stop. So, we took off for Little Persia, a thriving neighborhood with many Mom and Pop businesses, especially food choices, in Anaheim. I went along, smug that he would be wrong, chain that it was. And, well, here I am, eating my words. I originally came for a kabob, a safe choice. But then, I saw the two types of shawarmas mounted on the spit, spinning as they cooked on their counter. One generous sample taste of each, chicken and tri-tip, and I was hooked. I say this because I normally dislike shawarma because of one of the seasoning ingredients, cinnamon. This had none. The entrees we ended up with were: Shawarma Bowl, $12, made with the beef tri-tip, beautifully seasoned with their own exciting, Middle Eastern spice blend and a lovely, outer crusty element, the result of the heating element as it spun and cooked. My sides were Cucumber Salad, and Tabbouli. I also took them up on a half & half - rice and green salad, rather than all rice. I regretted that decision only because the rice was exceptional, a basmati rice lightly buttered. Next time, I'll skip the green salad. And I have to mention, the feta cheese curds they sprinkled on top were salty and magnificent tasting. My leftover rice was still enough to share with the Mister plus bring some home for another great but smaller meal. Mr. B ordered the 1/4 Dark meat chicken plate, $11.99. This was a moderately-sized leg quarter. Very tender and seasoned perfectly, this arrived with a small salad, a small cup of hummus, and pink pickled turnip strips, and let's not forget the irresistable garlic sauce and tsaziki! Falafel Wrap, $8.99. This was a decently sized wrap. Since I did not taste it, I can only comment that he liked it, even holding off until Day #2 to eat it, which I would normally not recommend. Falafel are always best fresh out of the fryer. This also came with the pickled turnips, which I happen to love. What a great, memorable meal, reasonable prices, and a very laid back dining room. This was made even better after visiting their next door neighbor, Sarkis Bakery for some of the best sweet treats ever. Yep. I reviewed that too. Be careful with the hummus tho - not sure how long they have it sitting in stock but it went off overnight in the fridge. Tasted "fizzy" and the container puffed up which I'm pretty sure isn't supposed to happen. I've made fresh hummus at home and it lasts 3-4 days so I wouldn't think 12 hours in the fridge would make it go off. The inside of Zankou is nothing crazy. It's a casual spot to have lunch or dinner. In high school, I used to work at the Dingtea next to Zankou and I would have Zankou all the time for lunch. My favorites are the chicken kebab plate, the lule kebab plate, and the rotisserie quarter dark chicken plate. The chicken and lule kebabs are always very flavorful and tender. I actually discovered lule on accident when I tried to doordash/ubereats Zankou chicken during Covid. They accidentally gave me someone else's order and it was a blessing in disguise because the lule kebab is fire. It's extremely juicy, delicious, and flavorful despite it looking like it might be dry. The hummus is decent but garlic sauce/toum is delicious. read more

The staff looked tired and unhappy to be there; from the cashier to the cooks. Now the good: the food. As delicious as ever. The garlic sauce alone was worth the trip. LOVE this place! Even when the place is packed and busy, they are pretty quick to get your order out to you. They have the best garlic spread/butter! The prices have gone up but that happens. Everything else is going up so can't complain. The portions haven't changed too much. Although, there are times when it seems like they are giving less humus and meat with their plates. Especially when you order on DoorDash/UberEats. Service is always consistent. The people can be friendly and helpful but don't like when you take too long to order. My toddler devoured every bite with me as well. The staff was very generous and attentive. Don't come here on lunch break if you have 1 hour to spare and don't order ahead by phone for pick up or to have it ready by the time you get there. Lunch rush yielded 20 minute wait on our order the first time we went so we had to resort to the pizza place next door that, although has nice service, fell flat on its face and didn't warrant the drive. Came here again after ordering our food by phone and then was so good my coworker doordashed me their steak wrap (I won't order anything else). The pickled veggies aren't my thing but the steak hits the spot. The pita wrap falls apart and can be messy but the steak is soft and flavorful, which saves it. Have napkins ready. It can be messy. I was listening to one of my favorite true crime podcasts and they had mentions Zankou Chicken, I was intrigued and so when the opportunity came to drive up to Redondo I asked my husband if we could make a special trip. This location is pretty close to Disneyland which is cool, when we arrived we were instantly greeted. It was around 2:00 ish so they had a good amount of people in line, I ended up ordering a half chicken entree and my husband order their tri-tip shawerma wrap, I noticed that they had baklava so I ended up buying that too. I was so excited for their chicken, the skin had a good crisp to it and oh my god that garlic spread is out of this world, really delicious.
