We were visiting Seattle for a fun getaway after Christmas. Of course, you're not going to go to Seattle and not try out a few coffee shops since it's essentially ground-zero for the coffee culture. We went into Zeitgeist for morning coffee and sustenance. The doppio espresso was delicious - a really nice espresso bean with rich flavors and, for me, just a little hit of steamed milk and a touch of sweetener. The bakery/breakfast offerings were great. Everything was fresh and, where applicable, hot/warm to offset the chilly morning. We brought back some to-go items for the others not brave enough to leave the hotel room and they gave a similar review. We'd definitely head back to Zeitgeist if in Seattle again. read more

Insanely cool atmosphere. I came here at 6:30am to get coffee before my train arrived and it wasn't a bad walk, a couple of blocks. The atmosphere is the coolest thing about this place. Featuring massive amounts of brick and giant retro cabinetry, if you like a coffee shop with character, this is your place. The staff is pleasant early this morning, I've only been here once so who knows if that's always the case. read more

Zeitgeist is the perfect spot to wait for the Amtrak train; I've been here many times. Their breakfast sandwich is always a treat: scambled egg, ham, and cheese, nestled inside griddled bread. I had a banana and a cuppa coffee for a healthy start to the day. And it only costs 8 bucks. Great service, good people watching, and excellent prices are waiting at Zeirgeist! read more

Hit or miss. I work near Zeitgeist, and it's a somewhat unpredictable spot for customer service. Sometimes the staff is warm and welcoming. Sometimes they are ice cold. The service is sometimes super fast, sometimes "did they forget about me...." slow. I boycotted it for a long time after a barista (who I don't think works there anymore) acted like I was the world's stupidest person for accidentally asking for a caramel macchiato instead of a caramel latte. I could feel her derision. But I recently started going back and it's back to normally scheduled good days-bad days programming. The owner is always very welcoming, and the coffee and pastries are usually good or great. Their jalapeño carrot muffin is awesome. It's a really good place to meet someone and sit for awhile, but maybe not as great of a place to go for your midday coffee. read more

I mean the name alone is cool enough but aside from that, just a solid coffee shop. I love their cafe au lait here, the staff is super friendly and I love the high ceilings and brick. Makes for a great place to read the paper or work on things or read. I like their generous display of newspapers and just the open-ness of the space. Nice vibes! Spent a lovely sunny October afternoon enjoying the chai tea lattes, the gorgeous exposed-brick walls and the art on the walls (as well as the wifi and a lot of sluggish work I had to do). The location is not far from the stadiums and just a short walk from Pioneer Square, and the lavender shortbread alone is worth the walk. The prices are reasonable and the wifi is quick for public wifi, and the chai is just a little spicier than you would think. It's a lovely warm atmosphere and a great perch to people watch or spend the afternoon chained to your laptop, trying to hit a deadline. read more

Laptop camper here. I brought my laptop here, hoping to get some work done. It's surprisingly not laptop camping friendly though they have free wi-fi. They barely had any power outlets which is unusual for a Seattle coffeehouse. * Latte: served very hot, quite smooth, good but not as good as Vita, Victrola or Vivace When I received my latte, I was surprised that they didn't make any attempt at foam art - most coffeehouses in Seattle have good foam art. The food did look and sound good though. They had salads, sandwiches and pastries (e.g., Top Pot Doughnuts). I also liked the ambiance and industrial/independent coffee house décor, like the vintage coffee pots, brick walls, and art on the walls. The café was packed, so finding a seat could be difficult. I can't have a Tim Tam Explosion* in the morning without good coffee and these guys serve some really great drip coffee. It also helps that they carry Top Pot doughnuts too! Whoo-hoo! *For those who don't know what a Tim Tam or Tim Tam Explosion is, this is an excerpt from my Cost Plus review (03/06/2007): If you don't know what a Tim Tam is, it's a little larger than a zippo lighter, has two chocolate biscuits separated by a layer of chocolate cream filling and encased in a chocolate shell. They come in many varieties: Original, Chewy Caramel, Double Coat, Dark and others, but I've only seen Original, Double Coat and Chewy Caramel at Cost Plus. Why such devotion to this product? It's because of the Tim Tam Explosion. You bite off the diagonal opposite corners of the Tim Tam and use it as a straw to drink coffee. Once you feel the liquid hit your mouth, quickly pop the biscuit in your mouth. An explosion of chocolate in your mouth! **Tim Tams is the Australian name of the product and is sold under their company banner (Arnott's) in the U.S.** read more

Our new favorite hang out while waiting for the train! We happily found this lovely little coffee and tea cafe recently while waiting for a friend to arrive on the train at the nearby Amtrak station. Her train was delayed an extra 30 minutes, so we had ample time to wander around and just enjoy the lovely crisp clear air of the early Spring morning! Zeitgeist is at once impressive and familiar. Walking in the front door its hard to miss the beautiful bar that extends the length of the cafe. Rich colors and tones from the wood, the exposed brick and the antiques around - it's a feast for the eyes! They seem to have a pretty straight forward menu with coffee being the main attraction. But with no coffee drinkers in our little party of three that morning, we still found hot chocolate and tea options that each seemed quite thrilled with. The Jasmine Pearl Tea and the Earl Grey Tea were the two favorites. Some fresh fruit and cookie - they have snacks too! haha! Combine this with nice comfy tables and chairs and a good WIFI connection - we were all set! Right in the heart of Pioneer Square, now that we've found Zeitgeist, no doubt we will be back more often and not just when we're waiting on a train! Character and Charm points... the antique type letter catalogue by the door. The little drawers are full of treasures and chotskys... feel free to explore and even add your own for others to marvel at. Very cool! read more

3 years later and this is still my go-to coffee shop in Seattle. It's got tons of comfortable seating, the coffee is _always_ fantastic and the baristas really know what they're doing. There's also more food options than most coffee places. I'm partial to the egg sandwiches in the morning, but I've had good luck with the sandwiches and salads they have for lunch too. Back to the baristas - they're always friendly and "flirty" (read: they smile and pretend to laugh at your jokes), but manage to stay speedy and churn out the coffee drinks without making mistakes (not something I can say for everywhere else). There's free wi-fi, cool art on the walls, and you're in the heart of Pioneer Square. Seriously - do I have to go on? The only thing I ever complain about is that sometimes some other yahoos fill this place up and the line is super long. I guess that's the price I pay for going to a popular coffee shop. read more

Wow. I remember now why I don't like these hipster coffee places. I asked for a clarification to their menu and the too-cool-for-school-to-give-a-shit-about-customers guy behind the counter gave me attitude like he couldn't believe I was asking him what something was. Dude, I've never been there, there was no one behind me, take a freaking second and be nice to someone who will potentially tip you. So I ended up getting a single shot of espresso. I posted a picture of it on here. When it was handed to me I was taken aback. Did I just pay $1.80 for 1/8th of an ounce of espresso?? After thinking about it for a second I went up to ask if that was the normal size of their espresso's. The young lady said "yeah we usually make them that small. As stated on Kerrie L's review, this is what I said when I was inside Zeitgeist: "Cafes in SF are NEVER this nice!" And apparently I told Kerrie I'd consider moving to seattle with her for the coffee. Zeitgeist looks more like a restaurant than a cafe. Nice decor, plenty of seating, a lot of artworks (depicting people's chins of all things) on the wall, not many Apple fanboys glued to their macbooks, and of course, good coffee. My breve was nicely frothy and creamy. The swirly foam on top was so pretty I almost felt sorry I had to put a lid on the cup. The espresso shot could be stronger, but that's just my preference. I feel like this coffee shop is one of those places the only people who live or work in Pioneer Square, maybe people using King Station or the train know about. I'm usually grabbing a chai or latte to go but decided to stay and enjoy my breakfast this morning. Staff is always friendly feel like your neighborhood coffee shop. Coffee is some of the best in Seattle. Lots of natural light and windows to people watch. Great ambiance in an older building has exposed beams and brick wall which looks to be an original archway. Love it here... their cherry almond scones make my appetite satisfied. The people that work here are beautiful and hip, which make my eyes satisfied. Um.. um.. I am at a loss for words. First I will say this place is HIPSTER-Mecca. If you're a hipster and like that culture, this is your place. I, however, most profoundly do NOT like that culture. And so normally that would require deleting at least 1-3 stars from my review. However. I cannot do that, because I seriously just had the best decaf caramel latte of my life here. This place is the real deal, people. They know what they are doing and the coffee is outstanding. Now that I think of it, it really is the best coffee I've had in Seattle, if not ever. And their decaf doesn't taste like the inside of an old aluminum can, like most places. Ok, so just know that you're going to have to deal with the hipsterism and all the high-falutin' BS that goes with that. Ugh. Probably the worst coffee experience I've had lately. Staff is either blind or so opposed to being helpful they might consider a career change. I know the lid and sugar station is within your sight line, so when I ask twice for water cups I know you know there aren't any just as well as I do. Baked good are expensive and taste awful. They didn't offer to heat my ham and cheese croissant, but it is doubtful that would have even helped. The sugar cookie was really bad texture and didn't taste good. Awful, awful. What I liked about it was the fact that it wasn't another cookie-cutter replicated store, and that the staff was so engaged - they were there for you, not just working there. After waiting in line for 10 minutes, I ordered a breakfast sandwich and a bottle of OJ. The sandwich was $4.80 (fine), and the OJ was $4.25 (really?) Then I waited over 15 minutes for them to make my breakfast sandwich. When I unwrapped it, it was burnt to a crisp. Completely inedible. Terrible prices, terrible service, terrible food. This is our office's favorite coffee spot. Since our team has been here many times the staff recognizes us and it is like meeting an old friend. If you have a business in the area you can definitely develop a relationship to the point where this feels like a second home. The reason why we come here so often is because I think the coffee is the best in pioneer square. Everything here tastes fantastic and definitely better than the coffee shop right around the corner...if you guessed Starbucks then you would be right. However, that great taste is not free. This place is expensive. You could probably get a 12oz at starbucks compared to the 8oz here. There is also a long line that can be out the door sometimes. Never the less, I love the atmosphere here. It has those tall ceilings, warm light brown wood everywhere, a mini library, and lots of space. This is a great place to sit down for a meeting even though it can get loud. Today I bought a 16oz bag of whole bean drip coffee as a gift for $15. I know the person who gets this will love it. I would highly recommend checking out Zeitgeist if you want to see a classic coffee shop with Seattle character. read more

The thing I love most about Seattle is the ability to grab a decent cup of coffee from a cute and cozy NON CHAIN, often two or more choices per block! And Zeitgeist served up the best cup of them all. For that velvety rich latte, for that perfect soy Americano (nearly impossible for anyone to make it seems), Zeitgeist gets 5 and a half stars. Minor quibble: they were out of almost every sandwich when I got there at lunchtime on a Sunday, but I can't even remove any portion of a star, because like I said, the coffee is THAT freaking good. You can get a sandwich anywhere. You can't, however, get magic in a cup anywhere. As their name suggests though, I'm sad to acknowledge that good non-chain coffee available at every corner is NOT the trend of the times outside of Seattle. read more

A solid 3.5 stars - not my favorite coffee shop in the city, but still far better than the coffee you'd get at a Starbucks. These folks do a decent, and strong, soy cappuccino, that's a bit more on the bitter side of things. Like a handful of other shops around here, they too offer a buy 10 get 1 free stamp card. One female barista even struck up acquaintance with us asking where we were from and what we were up to in Seattle as visitors (do Kansans look foreign to Seattle? Don't answer that) and welcomed us each morning, or afternoon. Spectacularly perfect lattes and mochas, a bold house coffee we refused to water down with milk or cream, and the best ham and cheese croissants ever. Dear God those were wonderful. Great ambiance, tall two story ceilings with exposed beams, original brick walls, fast & free wi-fi, and clearly a lot of people from the neighborhood that agreed with us that this is a place to call home for your buzz. Great huge spacious place to grab a cup of coffee and catch up or relax! One of the biggest coffee places I've seen (or maybe I've just been in New York for too long..) Prices are great too. A medium latte and medium coffee for around $5. I think it's so cute how they have actual sugar cubes you can put into your coffee (brown and white sugar!). They also have normal sugar packets, milk, etc. Service was a bit curt, but whatever. It didn't bother me too much. When I arrived in seattle all I wanted was a good cup of coffee. Tried several places, but somehow always ended up here. The lattes and mochas are divine, either hot or cold. The place is rather large for a coffee shop, it has lots of seats divided into two sections with the bar in the middle. This place does get pretty busy, seems like there's always someone in line. Pretty quick service for the quality of the cup of coffee. I mostly have the expresso based drinks, they put a lot of technique into it. They offer free wi-fi so you'll see a lot of people on their laptops. It does tend to be on the slow side, but with all those people on it it makes sense. Definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great atmosphere and a great cup of coffee. read more

What I like best is the toppings bar area where you can add in your sugars. There is a nice variety of sugar types. I like that they have cubed cane sugar! This is different from Sugar in the Raw. They have gift cards here that are reminiscent of 40's deco poster art. They even sell Tee shirts for the tourists! At least they are cool tee shirts! read more

This place was cool, they have a lot of seating, many of the tables were filled with people who looked like they were talking business. The coffee and tea were both good. They had free wifi which is always a plus. The atmosphere was a little bit loud but bearable. They had a great variety of condiments for your drinks which impressed me. I don't get downtown much. I don't drink coffee much. But I was taking an out of town friend around Pioneer Square and this happened to be one of the few places open on Labor Day. The drinks we had were good, and we were happy to have a quiet place we could write and sketch for a while while recharging. Then we debated how flawed the English language is. The staff seemed a little "meh" but the drinks were made pretty quickly and bathroom key location was happily pointed out (they probably get asked about the locked bathroom a lot, the keys are hanging on a column in the middle of the counter, near the register). I'd probably recommend this place if I were downtown and wanted a caffeine fix. read more

Zeitgeist is less than a block from my office, and my coworkers affectionately refer to it as "the cafeteria" come lunch time--it's a reliable, healthy option, and a good bit less expensive than some of the other nearby options. My manager also calls it his "second office"--a good place to get away from the actual office for a little while and have a tasty caffeinated beverage. In summary: Free wifi, good tea selection, a small selection of sandwiches etc. for lunch, friendly staff, plenty of seating. What's not to love? read more

Parking -- There is some street parking nearby and it looks like the tram also runs close by as well. Service -- The first woman taking my order was really friendly even with a short line and my card not swiping. The other woman at the counter wasn't super friendly. I liked the vibe of the place. It wasn't pretentious like some other coffee shops. It was just a nice, normal spot to grab some coffee. Food -- I tried the carrot squash muffin. It was really moist and the cream cheese icing was a nice bit of sweetness. The soy latte was okay. Not my favorite coffee and a bit expensive given the size. I felt similarly about the muffin. Would I be back if I was in the area? Probably. Would I go out of my way to get back here again? No. read more

Stopped by this afternoon as I was cruising around Pioneer Square. I've only been here about half a dozen times so it was nice to see it still going strong.
