The only reason Zeitgeist doesn't get all the stars is because you never know if the kitchen will be open or closed and service REALLY sucks sometimes. On the other hand, the kitchen always opens back up at some point and I REALLY appreciate the good service when I get it. There is definitely bad attitude from various staff at times, but I don't go there to have smoke blown up my a$$ and it's kinda punk rock like that. Think of it as a good opportunity to work on your people handling skills. I LOVE the burgers, the beer and the back yard. Where else can you get a $5 1/2 pound hand-formed BBQ'd Niman Ranch burger and a pitcher of Racer 5 and then get to enjoy them in a sunny back yard setting at a picnic table? Since returning to the country, I've been in search for the best Bloody Mary in San Francisco. I've tried the bloodies at Zeitgeist twice and must admit it's definitely at the top of the list. The drink includes a combination of horseradish, pepper, tomato juice, vodka and some special pickled juice. And to make sure you get your vitamins, it's topped off with pickled green beans and olives. At $8 a pop, these little suckers are darn stiff and will give you a nice warm, fuzzy feeling on a Sunday afternoon. read more

Not much to say that hasn't been said. They serve pitchers which is really nice of them. Reasonably priced too. Reminds me of a beer garden...well as close as you can get to one in the middle of a dense city. A wide variety of beer with good stuff like Elysian and Moonlight as well as some good IPAs, a rarity in this town. The only downside I can see is all the hipsters, who need to stop blocking my path to the bar, put some brakes on their fixed gear so I'm not run into again, and learn to drink something better than Pabst when you're blessed to be at such a fine establishment. read more

This bar has a solid selection of good beer and pretty reasonably priced pitchers. However, the cocktail my boyfriend ordered (a whiskey-ginger ale) was really low on the whiskey; you could barely tell there was alcohol in the drink at all. The bartenders are rude and the bathrooms are disgusting (I did not visit the Porta-Potties on the patio). Overall, I'd say it's about what you'd expect from a dive bar. read more

I live around the corner and used to like this place, but lately I start to have a lot of trouble trying to bring international guests out there. The staff are absolutely xenophobics, they complain even to read a DOB in a passport. We got three different scenes in 2 months. Those guys should learn that nobody have to know everything about the culture of a different place. Locals can teach them and not just shout on them. Or they should travel at least one time abroad. Finally, how they can be so arrogant to enforce the California law if they let everybody smoke pot there. read more

first of all I am sure one day they are going to stop letting me in because I don't ride my bike there, second off, never been there at night, so it may be a hole other seen, third off not a place I would go to by myself (bartenders are not the friendly type). But what is great about this place is the huge outdoor seating area and BBQ. On a nice day, go get a bugger and and a a couple beers with some friends and you are almost guarantied a great time. I'd be hard-pressed to say much bad about Zeitgeist. Newly revamped tap layout means they have a TON of really good beers on tap...not just PBR (of course, it is there tough...after all this is a biker bar in the mission). Pints and pitchers are reasonably priced as well. The inside hosts a pinball and arcade machine, and a well stocked jukebox, and the outside is host to a HUGE beer garden...I'd say one of the biggest outdoor spaces of any bar in SF. This keeps the crowds in check on friday nights and makes this an awesome place to go sit in the sun and drink away a sunday afternoon. On top of all that, they have a pretty solid grill that serves up burgers and some good 'ol fashioned drunk food for that late night snack you've been craving. And if you're lucky, you might just catch the Tamale Lady as she's passing through and get yourself a special treat. read more

Went here for the first time this weekend. I walked in to see a pretty decent beer selection and a huge patio! Luckily it wasn't freezing... The 3 stars is because I saw one of the bartenders yell at a guy who tried to use a credit card to pay and then announce to everyone within yelling distance that he would wait until this guy took money out of the ATM by the door. It was really rude and unnecessary. I don't understand why some people work in the service industry. read more

I have heard a lot of crappy things about this place (i.e., never to go there). I decided to give it a try anyway as I was taking a friend from out of town on a bit of a bar crawl. Our first impression of the place was that the bouncer was a complete bitch. Like, seriously the rudest bouncer I've ever met. I've met some mean bouncers, but this girl took the cake. I guess the less you know about customer service, the cooler you are. After some raised eyebrows from us she finally let us in, which was good, because the beer was tasty and and bartender was nice - and obviously the patio was rad. This is my first review, and I mean it. My girlfriend had her birthday here a little while ago. I was challenged to stand up on a table and give her a toast. I got up on the table and... pretty quickly got grabbed by the bouncer. The bouncer is a really nice guy. He was surprisingly understanding and let me stay for the rest of the night. He didn't even make me spill any of my beer when he pulled me down from the table. He's a really decent guy, in spite of the few reviews that seem to suggest otherwise. Later on that night, my girlfriend lost her purse in the busy backyard area. Ian, one of the workers, found it and turned it over to the bouncer. Thanks to both of them, she got her purse back and crisis was averted. My night would have been totally ruined if I would have been kicked out of my girlfriend's birthday, or if I would have had to console her over a lost purse. Thanks to Ian and to the bouncer, we both ended up happy and thankful that night. read more

so, we all love Zeitgeist. It's an easy go-to bar for a celebration like a birthday party, or a laid back night with the girls. As a few others have mentioned, the diverse crowd offers a bit for everyone. It's easy to talk to everyone there. The bar food is food. Outside is definitely more appealing than inside. read more

This place is super fun, loaded with character and nuttiness with it's tattooed bearded rock star, indie hipsters in every corner, to it's random, super hilarious stickers slapped everywhere. Ive been to this bar a couple of times. The first time was alright. They dont take cards, the bar tenders are sometimes inattentive. The main thing, though, is that the bar tenders are extremely rude. My most recent visit is what prompted this review, because I was so dissatisfied at the level of service. The service was so bad that it literally prompted me to create an account and write a review on this website. I walked in, ordered an IPA for myself and my friend. Prices were fine - after getting my beer, walked outside to smoke a cigarette. I was there for no more than 10 minutes before bouncers walked up to us saying we had to leave because we had snuck booze in. What had happened was, one of my friends had sat at a table to talk with people who we did not know, and who happened to have brought a bottle of liquor with them, and then we were associated with them. Keep in mind - none of us had brought liquor in, and one person merely happened to talk to the "offenders." The bouncers then demanded that we leave the bar - with us not knowing what the devil was really going on - so we did. Instead of creating a scene, we decided to leave. Here's the problem - we tried to tell them that we did not know these people at all. It fell upon absolutely deaf ears. They had none of it. If you're a bouncer, you should be keeping track of who brings unauthorized liquor into your establishment. You should NOT be kicking out innocent, paying patrons who would like to come here to have a drink. One bouncer had the courtesy to let me finish my drink, which consisted of me chugging a very strong IPA, instead of slowly enjoying it as I had intended. I hope this reaches t he management of Zeitgeist well and they improve their customer service relationship well. You should listen more to your patrons and not rely upon your bouncers - they are absolutely rude. I will not be recommending Zeitgeist to my friends. read more

I moved to SF from Ann Arbor and this place is like my 2 favorite bars back home (8 Ball and Dominick's for those in the know) had a baby and it moved to the west coast just to say "fuck you mom and dad!" Great beer selection, simple but perfectly greasy and bad grilled cheese and home fries for CHEAP, and best of all, BACK PATIO! Don't eat meat but I hear the burgers are good. read more

Amazing , fun, social, very Mission-SF atmosphere, with an awesome large courtyard area and even relatively clean bathrooms! My favorite Mission bar and the one I always bring visiting friends to for a taste of the heart of SF's gritty inner beauty beneath the pockmarks/open sores of extreme poverty, ultra-aggressive homelessness, and drug abuse! Their beer selection is great, and while I haven't tried their Bloody Mary's, the legend of their deliciousness is the stuff of awed whispers. I love Zeitgeist ! read more

My friend took me here after work, it's super convenient and close to soma skatepark which is a definite plus for me, the drinks were good and the service wasn't so bad, however i was really grossed out on the mice in the backyard, and the bathrooms were pretty bad. used to love this place. until this past sunday. a friend had a birthday party and things started off on the wrong foot with the rude guy checking ids at the door. bartenders here have always been pretty unfriendly, so no news there. they do have a whole lot of new rules. no pictures are allowed because you may catch someone doing something illegal and the pics may be posted somewhere. cannot put your foot on the benches either. we had a pinata which they did not allow us to hang. it felt like hanging out in someone's parents' living room with the parents calling you on someting every five minutes. they won't be seeing my money any more. te 2 stars are due to their drinks wich are fairly priced and mostly tasty. read more
