    Wonderful rolls!
    Jim B.

My son and I had planned to eat pho today, but the restaurant of choice was closed. Instead, we drove down the street to Umberto's. I had only been once before for a retiree luncheon. I'm not sure why I did not review it at that time. I don't remember anything about that visit, but I know I liked the food. Today, they had a sign outside the entrance listing three specials. The one that caught my eye was redfish topped with shrimp in a gorgonzola sauce with asparagus and a side of spaghetti. That definitely piqued my interest. The server took our drink orders and left us to look at the menu. I decided I wanted bruschetta for an appetizer. My son preferred the mussels, but I said one appetizer was enough. When the server brought our drinks, he also brought a plate with bruschetta. We gobbled it down and, even though it was delicious, we ordered the mussels in red sauce afterall. There were a few dozen of them on the platter drenched in the most delicious red sauce. We shamelessly used our wonderful bread rolls to sop up the sauce. It was wonderful and decadent in a homey kind of way. My son ordered the veal piccata. I went ahead with the redfish special. While we waited, we were served a really delicious bowl of creamed broccoli soup, which we slurped down like hungry puppies. It was as I already said- really delicious. The server freshened up our bread basket so we would have rolls for our entree. The veal piccata looked amazing. My son said it was the best he has ever had. When my entree came out, I was blown away. The shrimp were huge! There were at least 11, but I think I missed one when I counted. They were cooked perfectly. The redfish was also cooked perfectly- lightly breaded and most likely sauteed in butter. The asparagus was hiding underneath everything, and all of it was covered in the gorgonzola sauce. The heaping serving of thin spaghetti in butter was separate in a bowl. That sauce was super delicious. We both ate as much as we comfortably could, but came away with enough for a couple more meals. Mine literally filled up a to go box. I put the spaghetti on the bottom and piled the other leftovers on top. Then I poured all of the remaining sauce over it all. I will eat well again tomorrow., I loved everything about this restaurant. It was quiet, clean, and comfortable. Our server, Julian, was everything you could possibly want in a server: polite, friendly, and knowledgeable. The only down side is that we are still craving pho. Maybe next week it will be open on my son's day off.

We came here on a whim, the original place we picked out was closed. From the outside, this place isnt much to look at. Once we got inside, the place was packed on a Saturday night. We were promptly seated though and given a complimentary bruschetta. I ordered the steak special, which was a 10oz ribeye with a mushroom demi glace, some Umberto's jumbo shrimp, asparagus, and a side of pasta. The dinner also came with a salad, this wasn't Costco mixed greens either, it was a hand chopped house salad with Italian dressing. The food came out and it was great. Everything tasted really good, service was amazing, and the price was right.

This was my birthday dinner and it was just delicious. Our server was extraordinary. We got welcomed with some bruschetta and freshly baked dinner rolls. We ordered the Shrimp Umberto as appetizer and it was a delight. The shrimp was lightly breaded sitting atop this delicate lemon sauce. I ordered Chicken Francesca and the portion was so big that I had enough for leftovers that felt like a whole meal in itself. We also ordered shrimp scampi and it was so good that we all just want to come back and order that. Overall, it was an exquisite experience from this very original family owned business. I will definitely be back.

This place was delicious. Local spot with food that tastes just as freshly made as it looked. Went here for a birthday dinner as a first time patron and it did not disappoint. Server was excellent and personable. Glad I found this spot because I will be back. They start you off with a little bruschetta with a tomato and garlic medley on top. But there's also delicious rolls and butter. I asked for a side of marinara for the rolls and it was so good. I had the ribeye with rosemary potatoes. Birthday girl had the chicken Francesca, my oldest son had the shrimp scampi and my youngest a cheese pizza. All delicious. Also tried the umberto shrimp appetizer. So good. All large servings. All worth coming back for. Drinks stayed topped up. Just all around excellent. Made a point to each other we would be back. Such a delicious experience. At 5 on a Monday wasn't crowded at all and food came out timely. You definitely have a new customer.

Service was fabulous, Cab wine was a nice pour for the price and delicious! Chicken Gorgonzola was rich and delicious as was the Chicken Parm. We could have split an entree especially since we had the stuffed mushrooms first! The rolls were hot and crispy on top. Nice, cozy atmosphere. Just sad we're traveling and couldn't take the leftovers!

Took a good friend of mine here on 3/25/25 for her birthday. The food was very good, and portions were generous. They were entertaining a large party which made the small restaurant very noisy and hard to hear my friend when she spoke, but I guess that was to be expected. Would have given 5 stars if it had not been for the poor service from our waitress in which her tip reflected. I did make a point to tip two young gentleman working that were of more helping us than our actual waitress.

I was going to play at the poker room next door, but it smelled like a combo of s**t and carpet--the putrid scent blowing in my face by a fan facing the door as I walked in. It turns out, there was a plumbing problem. So.... I went to Umberto's next door. I was on the sniff-out for sharpet but fortunately got the all-clear. Right when I walked in, a hostess entered and sat me down. Then the waiter immediately came over and asked me if I wanted a beer. Lol. This was a first! So I said, "Sure" and had a beer in a frosty glass. Beer was the only thing I drank because the waiter never brought water. This was odd, but I figured out that maybe their water was connected to the plumbing problem next door and is why he asked me if I wanted a beer. He was indeed a good waiter despite this odd occurrence. The bread was a dime, the bread with tomato thing was solid, and the Chicken Parm was not amazing but I did finish it. I also have realized that East Coast Chicken Parm and Texas Chicken Parm are two different things. I grew up eating the other one. Then there is the salad. The salad was good. I got no cheese, even though I can eat cheese but don't love cheese. I don't get the whole cheese thing, even though Chicken Parm is my favorite meal and has cheese. Would I recommend Umberto's? Sure.

We had our Galantines dinner last night and everything was perfect from the time we walked in. Service was great, food was amazing and our waiter was beyond amazing. He was so kind and even took many group pics for us. We had an amazing time. This place is a hidden gem in SA and a must try!!! My 2nd time and all my friends it was first time and they all enjoyed their experience. Wish we would have taken more food pics...

I tried the food via food delivery and was impressed so we went for dinner. The service was chaotic and slow. It was as if nobody knew our table was there but we were in the middle of the room watching all the staff but 1 stand around chatting by kitchen doors. We weren't offered any refills, stopped 2 servers for silverware after we received our food and finally stopped a busser that brought them. Didn't receive salt & pepper requested although other talked all had them on the table. Requested our check 3 times before crossing the room and requesting a 4th time. The bill was 150 for 2 adults & 2 children no alcohol or desserts. That's too steep for the experience we had.

    Any gluten free pasta options?

    None.

Are they able to accommodate large parties 10 or more? TIA!

Yes, they can handle a party of 10 without a problem, but would recommend you call them ahead of time so they can reserve a large section for you. They also have a party room, but reservations are required.

The food feels like the chefs were given good quality materials, but had no idea what to do with them. We ordered a funghi pizza to share then a cinghiale, a costine (short ribs), and a dentice (bass). Funghi pizza was the only dish that made coming worth it at all. It had a nice flavor, but if you're expecting the notes of an earthy mushroom flavor, don't. It's just a nicer version of a standard cheese pizza topped with some onions and mushroom. The cinghiale was just stunningly mediocre. The meat was flavorful, but the pasta itself was shockingly bland. It was just so... ok. The dentice was the best of the 3 individual dishes, but it is just what you would expect some average short ribs with random sauce to taste. The costine was just terrible. Salty on the outside, yet flavorless on the inside. Avoid at all costs. The service was passable, but they clearly overwork their servers as one server just handles an entire section and is too overwhelmed to be timely. I came to cheer myself up, but honestly it only made dinner comically worse. I seriously can't imagine what would cause someone to rate this as 5 stars. Maybe if they thought Olive Garden was 4.5, then I guess this would barely be a 5 in comparison? Either way, if you're looking for good food for your dinner, keep looking. You won't find it here.

Truly every person at the table seemed to love what they ordered -- we had a lot of "you have to try this!" moments being passed around the table. One thing I especially appreciated was the Caesar salad. I noticed another review mentioning the anchovy flavor in the dressing as a negative, but in my opinion, that's exactly what made it great. As for the food, it was good but not exceptional. I was excited for the Goat Cheese Pizza with balsamic onion, pistachio, and saba. The thin crust, however, was almost too crunchy and a bit tough to eat. The toppings didn't stand out as much as I had hoped, likely because they were overbaked together. It was about 60 degrees outside and we kindly asked to turn off the outside fans which were on full blast. Once. Then again, and again, and again. After 5 attempts asking various people we gave up and the waitress let us know she couldnt turn them off because their iPad control died. We werent upset at this we were just upset we kept getting different answers and no explanation for our entire 2+ hr meal. We finished the entree and were waiting for the dessert for about 15 minutes until we finally just flagged down a waittress and asked to get the check and desert to go because we were ready to leave. We waited another 10 minutes before someone else brought us our desert but no check. We asked them for the check and then the original waitress came back with our check and another set of deserts. At some point I saw another server who seemed like the manager or supervisor telling another worker to straighten the tables outside so the corners were aligned... needless to say the table alignment was not the issue. Overall just seemed like the restaurant was overwhelmed and there wasn't alot of communication between tables and the staff. It seems the staff was trying their best but the management wasn't handling it well. Would have appreciated more effort into making sure we were taken care of considering the meal for 2 totaled almost 300$. The only reason this isn't a one star is because of the kind waiting staff.

As far as the food, we had the fried mozzarella, which was essentially a log of cheese deep-fried and served over sauce. It was delicious, but the cheese-to-crust ratio was a bit heavy. The Caesar salad looked better than it tasted. It was very wet, if that makes sense, and the lettuce seemed soggy. Now for the Wagyu ragu. This almost made me have a seizure, and not in a good way. It was extremely salty and completely inedible, so we had to send it back. The waitstaff was very accommodating and agreed that the salt level was way off, so we replaced it with the carbonara. I'm not sure if that's what authentic carbonara is supposed to taste like, but I did not enjoy it. It tasted burnt to me and had too much pepper. I also didn't care for the shape of the noodles. Last, we had the Americano pizza. It was decent, but nothing to write home about. I just think that if you're going to advertise a pizza with meat on it, there should be more than one piece of sausage per slice. As far as the service, our server was fine. The first night I was greeted by a friendly host and sat at the bar, where Billy took great care of me. He recommended the Cotto e Salsiccia, and I'm so glad he did. It was easily one of the best pizzas I've had. While I was there, the cheesemaker let me try a bite of the fresh mozzarella they were making in-house. It was still warm and absolutely delicious. The next night I was feeling a little homesick after being away for work, and all I could think about was that pizza. I walked back in and the host greeted me by name. I sat at the bar again, where another bartender remembered me from the night before, and Billy came over just to say hi. It seems like such a small thing, but when you're traveling alone, being welcomed back like that can completely change your evening. What really impressed me was seeing that it wasn't just me. The guy next to me ordered two pizzas to go, and when the chef brought them out he smiled and said, "Oh, Jose! I thought this order looked familiar!" You can tell they actually know their regulars and genuinely enjoy what they do. The second night I ordered the Fontina e Salsiccia, and somehow it was just as good as the first pizza. Everything is cooked in the wood-fired oven--even the wings--and you can taste the difference. The crust has that perfect char, the ingredients are fresh, and it's the kind of authentic Neapolitan pizza that keeps you thinking about it long after you've left. I've eaten at a lot of good restaurants while traveling, but very few have made me feel as welcome as Dough did. Great food is one thing. Great people are what made me come back the very next day. I'll absolutely be back the next time I'm in San Antonio.

Dough Pizzeria Napoletana truly lives up to its commitment to authenticity. Our waiter was…read moreincredibly attentive and took the time to explain the restaurant's philosophy: as many ingredients as possible are imported directly from Italy, and anything that can't be imported is thoughtfully sourced from local producers. That attention to detail definitely comes through in the food. I ordered the arugula salad with chicken, and it was outstanding. The combination of candied pumpkin seeds, creamy goat cheese, roasted beets, and balsamic vinaigrette was perfectly balanced, with every bite offering great texture and flavor. My friends ordered the pepperoni pizza and couldn't stop talking about how delicious it was. Then came dessert... and I completely lost all self-control--in the best way possible. We ordered the affogato, tiramisu, torta di polenta, and the Nutella torta. Every single dessert was beautifully executed and absolutely delicious. If I had to pick favorites, the affogato and the Nutella torta were the standouts, but honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. Excellent service, thoughtfully sourced ingredients, and food that delivers from start to finish. I'll definitely be back!
