I recently visited Zen Nail Salon in Santa Rosa and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. When I first arrived, both the nail technician and the front desk staff came across as rude and dismissive, which immediately made the environment feel uncomfortable. During the appointment, the nail tech's attitude felt condescending at times, and I didn't feel welcomed or valued as a customer. Toward the end, she did try to be nicer, which I appreciated, but by that point the overall experience had already been affected. A nail appointment should feel relaxing and positive, and this just wasn't that. This was my first time going to this location for 2 very specific services. I had called three hours ahead of time to ask about services. I ended up scheduling an appointment for a manicure and pedicure with gel polish. When I arrived to the location, they sat me down and immediately started to work on my toes. I noticed that the lady who was helping me didn't start the water. She only immediately started to trim and clip my toenails. I let her know it's my first time getting a pedicure here and didn't know what to expect and I even rolled up my pants. Five minutes into it I noticed she was already painting my toes. I noticed everyone who was getting their feet soaked were across from me. I started to feel uncomfortable immediately. She then finished with my toes and then took me to go sit down to do my manicure. After my manicure, I go to go pay at the reception and ask her(who happened to be the manager), What did I get booked for? She said color change for both medi and pedi. I explained to the manager Helen there must've been a mistake because I personal called ahead of time and requested a medi and pedi full service. Then I explained to her that I didn't have any gel polish or painted nails when I came in. I told her that I felt embarrassed at this point because the reason I came was to get a full pedicure and manicure full service because I have a wedding to go to this Saturday. She then apologized and said that Rachel the other reception was the one who wrote it on the appointment schedule and made the mistake. I explained to her that at this point, I felt embarrassed to even continue getting any service here because I felt outcasted. Helen was very adamant to continue to get the service and told me to not worry. She kept insisting to go ahead and finish the service for the same price due to the mistake of Rachel. I told her OK no worries. I'll do it then. She then start speaking in her native language yelling at the tech who did the service on me. Everyone in the shop looked over at me and was questioning what was happening. This increase the level of embarrassment. The whole time as she is soaking my feet and massaging she kept saying sorry. At this point, I didn't even want to continue the service. But I felt obligated because everyone was looking at me. After five minutes of soaking in massaging, I go up to the front desk. This time Rachel is there and I'm about to pay the $80. She told me then it was gonna be $95. I then question Rachel why are you guys charging me for full service? If it was your guises mistake and then on top of that, I felt obligated to stay and felt super uncomfortable. She said that she needed to talk to the manger. Then she yelled across the shop for the manager. Everybody turned around, Helen came over then she explained everything to Rachel. Rachel then was arguing with Helen saying it wasn't her fault but instead insisted that it was the manager's fault for the mixup. I then asked Helen why am I paying the full $95? If you told me you were gonna go ahead and complete the service for the $80. She then backtrack and said oh I never told you that it must be a language barrier. At this point, I said fine. I'll just pay the full $95. I would never recommend going to this place. They made me feel very embarrassed and uncomfortable. The thing that I don't understand is, why would the nail tech still charge me as change of color? If clearly I didn't have any color on my toes or hands. On top of that, when I tried communicating with the tech, all she kept doing was not in her head and saying yes. My nails 2 days later. Got them done for a concert. Lines not straight or defined in some nails. My nails don't grow fast so the growth showing is crazy and they pretty much looked like this the day I got them done. I got charged $77 and I have never paid over $65 for dip powder and I've had better French too. Customer service definitely could be better as well. read more

I gave them 5 visits and the owner was kinda rude. The 3 Chow Dogs walking around was interesting. One dog starting barking at a customer that I had just met. I asked why is that dog barking at her at the front desk? I was told that "That dog doesn't like glasses or Cologne smell." I was also told by the owner after looking at all the color choices and we have given you enough help. Just because I took too long for liking. She was rude 3 out of the 5 times I was there. I will never return to see her rudeness. I also got the feeling she intimidates her nice workers. No more for me good riddance. read more

Let me start off by saying I really, really, REALLY didn't want to write this review...but I've just met my max with poor outcomes from the services I've received. I'm currently dealing with an ingrown toenail that was 100% due to the cutting practices of a technician at Zen. Unfortunately this is not the first bad experience. Once back in 2023 when I was getting pedicures somewhat infrequently, something similar had happened but I kinda got over it since it wasn't egregious. I was able to handle it with a few epsom salt soaks and the problem cleared up. This time it's different. I went in early August for a pedicure. The way the technician cut my toenail is so absolutely counterintuitive to how it should be done to avoid ingrowns. She cut it at a diagonal on the side of my big toe. I'm not sure if she thought she was removing dead skin, but I could tell as soon as she did it that I would have a problem with that toe. The worst part is I ALWAYS request they only cut flat across. She nodded, indicating she'd heard me, yet proceeded to cut down the sides. I didn't want to be rude, tried to trust what she was intending to do, & failed myself in the process. Another bad experience I had was back in June. I was getting a gel tip manicure for my honeymoon. The ladies are nice! Do not get me wrong. But I just don't think they are trained in the slightest. Not only was the drill too fast, and she accidentally cut my cuticles multiple times, but she used it in a way that severely damaged my natural nail. I have "ski slope nails," according to a licensed/private nail tech I visited to get the nails removed post-honeymoon, meaning they angle up. I think because of this the lady who did my nails attempted to counteract my natural shape by grinding deeper into my nail bed. It's August and I'm still dealing with brittle nails from that experience. Lastly, the gel material they used BURNED under the UV light. Like it actually stung so bad I considered scraping the whole idea of getting nails. But it was for my honeymoon & again, I didn't want to be rude. I wanted to trust the process. I failed myself once more. All of this to say I seriously cannot see myself coming back here. I've had some decent experiences; it's a place my mom and best friends frequent with what seems to be little to no issue. But for some reason, the techs do not know how to handle my type of fingernails and toenails. It's depressing. I'm sad. I HATE writing bad reviews. But truly if I didn't say something I would feel like I was letting myself down again, and I just couldn't do that. read more

This review is long overdue. I went to Zen with 2 friends for a pedicure. Once the Pedi was done and we went out for dinner, all three of us said that we thought the pedi was lacking, our feel were still rough and we shared that we felt rushed, like they were trying to get through as many customers as possible. I called the next day to share my thoughts with the owner, and was polite but expressed my discontent. She said that if we had had the basic pedicure, "You get what you pay for!" She said that the $70 (?) pedicure was the better one. I could not believe how obnoxious the owner was. Later in talking with others, they all say they will no longer go there. Ann did my toes and she was so kind! The only reason I'm giving a 3/5 rating is because I do feel like my manicure was a tiny bit rushed. They do look cute but I wanted cat eye design and I feel as though I did not get that unfortunately. I know they were trying though and it is a hard design. I just think if they're not confident in doing it they could ask another manicurist or not provide that nail design as an option. read more

I had Ann today as my technician for my pedicure. She was very personable and did a great job. I am diabetic and she was very careful not to cut me. Sometimes they try to be too careful and my toes don't really get cleaned, but she was good. I got a nice rub down, not a massage, of my calves with the orange scrub. It felt good. She took about a half hour in total. The place has nice decor and is very clean and the music is very relaxing. read more

When the lady started my nails it was okay. Then when I asked her to re-do the French tip of my toes she kept insisting on how it should be shaped and I told her twice "can I not have it curve just straight please". Poor Policy. I received a gift certificate or a mani/pedi which was written the gift certificate. They charged me more & said that they had a price increase even though the certificate clearly said mani/pedi. I complained and said they should honor the certificate that was only 3 months old. They refused. I said that it was bad policy & I wouldn't be back. Unfortunately, I have 2 more certificates so decided to use them and made an appointment. They knew who I was when I made the appointment. When I arrived, the gal at the front desk refused service because I complained about their policy last time. I said "okay, then refund my gift certificates" she refused and said that I can re-gift to someone else. I've been going here for years and they used to be okay because most of the technicians do a decent job but one drew blood when she cut my my toe. Disappointing Experience -- Not Worth the Price I've been to Zen Nails in Santa Rosa a few times in the past, and while the salon itself is beautiful, my most recent visit will definitely be my last. $45 for a gel manicure is simply too expensive for the level of service provided. The technicians are kind, but they barely speak any English, which made it difficult to communicate exactly what I wanted. More importantly, the owner is consistently unprofessional and not at all polite, which creates an uncomfortable atmosphere that takes away from what should be a relaxing experience. It's honestly sad, because the salon just recently upgraded their chairs -- which look like they cost somewhere between $500-$800 each -- and I suspect the price hikes are to help cover that expense. Unfortunately, passing that cost directly onto customers without improving the service experience just doesn't sit right. After reading through other Yelp reviews, it's clear I'm not alone in feeling this way. Many others have reported: * Rushed services that result in uneven or painful work * Technicians switching mid-service without explanation * A lack of attention to detail * Being scolded or made to feel unwelcome * Surprise charges or unclear pricing It's frustrating to see a place with so much potential fall short where it matters most: professionalism, consistency, and customer care. I stopped going to Zen because, quite frankly, the staff have always been rude. However, my friend wanted to go so I decided, why not? I love the dogs and the inside is cute. It has been at least 4 years since I stopped going as a regular customer, but my experience solidified me NEVER going again. The gentlemen that was helping the lady next to me was very kind! The person helping me, though, was very rude the entire time and so was the person at reception. If I'm paying that much and not doing anything to deserve that sort of hostility then that's extremely unprofessional, disrespectful and inappropriate. Not sure why this place is rated so low? I got one of the more basic pedis on their menu, Hawaiian pedi?, um I felt like I got so much for a $50 pedi ...! A long foot and leg massage, paraffin foot mask, a great scrub on my legs and feet, warm towels, complementary drink menu with fun teas.... Not to mention the most complete clean up job and nail painting process... if you know,you know... some places skip steps and it shows after.... Also I loved when I walked in there's a front reception (no one yelling at you asking what you want from across a noisy room haha )giant selection of quality colors, seat numbers...( my favorite haha) , chairs are nice and new with fun feature... it's huge and atmosphere is calm and clean! I had Kim, she was sweet and focused... my feet didn't feel judge by her either :) they also have cute little flip books with dogs for adoption at local shelters when you are drying at a comfortable drying station... love!!! You can definitely tell the owner has done this awhile and put a lot of thought into their set up and details... which has made all the difference for me and definitely will drive from Petaluma for my next pedicure! read more

Arrive 10 min early as they request, even though I don't need to pick a color (have my own polish). Wanted a simple pedicure. Three other people came in with me for 3 pm appts, all known to the shop, (I am a first time client). They were all seated and their pedicures started in 5 minutes of arrival. I am in my 80s and I bring my husband to Zen Nails because he has Parkinson's Disease. The young woman at the check-in desk who subs for the regular woman yelled at me because I couldn't follow the direction of the elderly man who worked there and who didn't speak English. I was asking him where the manicurist was so I could give her a tip. The young woman at the desk screamed at me that I couldn't hear and she kept screaming. I hear perfectly and asked her to stop yelling at me. We are regular customers and the normal regular cashier behind the desk is very business savvy and good. But this young woman sub feels very entitled and is horrifically unkind and disrespectful. She should be fired. I have heard her treat others cruelly as well. She might be the daughter of the owner or she would have been fired a long time ago. Don't go to Zen Nails until the loud screeching mean scary Asian woman has left the business. I love the pedicures with paraffin wax and warm towels! As someone who has always worked on their feet, it is a great relief. I've been going to Zen Nails for over a year. It's gotten progressively worse. I went in for a pedicure and French tip manicure. The reception was rude. Scolding me for being 3 minutes late. Not 10 or 15, but 3. The salon was not busy, only 3 customers and I was told to have a seat at the chair. The water was cold and it got worse from there. Went here with my cousin on a recommendation from a friend. They were rude and rushed us, we both left with cuts from rushed work. My nail broke within a few days, I went back in to see if they could fix it and they gave me a hard time for not knowing the color I had, as well as not being able to fit me in to fix the nail. This was my first time here. Felt a stuck up vibe initially till the front desk staff warmed up. I had a mani/pedi with paraffin treatment. All was good until the polish. When my cuticles were clipped there was still cuticle on my nail which was never taken off and then painted over. The OPI polish was old and sticky and never dried well. I took everything off when I got home and did my own mani/pedi and polish. I bought a cuticle essence and it was halfway full like it had been used in the salon and packaged back up for resale. Trust the 100's of terrible reviews. Mediocre and inconsistent. I definitely don't like when nail places charge a certain price in the beginning and then after you keep coming start to charge more. Whether it was a mistake the 1st 4 times I came or there tactics in hopes you don't notice, it seems to happen at a lot of places. You do a little extra one time thinking it's only an extra $15 from what you were paying and boom, $50 more than your last experience. I actually only started coming back here after 5 years of boycotting this place because the prices were way too high. I was happy when I thought they lowered their prices from all the bad reviews. (I tell someone I went there for my nails and ppl only have terrible stories to tell me about this place.. I can't say I blame them.) I stopped going after I had gaps in the nails where the tip and the nail connect. Instead of fixing it and giving me the right size nail tip, they just filled my under nail with glue to have that wash away after a few days and start allowing dirt and grime to get under my nail. Came back for my fill again and instead of cutting down the nail and starting over, they just added more glue to cover the holes. Finally I had to just cut the nails off my self to make sure it stayed clean and didn't create an infection from mold growing underneath. When you are walking out paying almost $200 after tip, this shouldn't happen. Sorry to say but I won't be coming back.. not for my next fill and not in the next 5 years to see if it's changed.
