I am sad to report that a lot has changed in 4 years. They've moved, they've changed cooks and the quality of the food has gone down the toilet. They new interior was the first indication. The dining room flowed right into the cashier area which flowed right into the kitchen which flowed right into the stairway to what may be the owners home. If it was more intimate it might have seemed like you had a exclusive seat inside the kitchen. But the high ceilings and the fact that our seats felt like they were an unobstructed football field's length from the kitchen gave the place an empty, cavernous feel. We got our wanton soup. It was lukewarm and bland. We got a couple noodle dishes and same thing, no flavor. I tried the rice and was amazed to discover that it was hard and dry, almost like it had been sitting on the counter for a couple hours. The pieces of chicken were just barely cooked and my wife bit into one to discover it was raw in the middle. I asked for some chili sauce, eager to improve this mess but discovered once I'd added it that it made the meal worse. I tried the sauce by itself and rather than chili it tasted like the inside of a refrigerator. I have no doubt that I was served the top couple spoonfuls from a jar that had been sitting, uncovered in the fridge for months. We tried to wash it all down with some more water but we were out. The poor gal had to run a marathon to get from the kitchen to the dining area so the service was infuriatingly slow and full water glasses were the casualties. It's the only place in Star Valley where you can eat Chinese food. It's good, as long as you know what to get, if you don't know--you better pull out your reading glasses because the menu is LITERALLY 20 pages long. Sesame chicken, Orange chicken, or the Mongolian beef are my top three choices. You can never go wrong with any of them. The Sesame is crispy and piping hot, Orange is always good (although sometimes pretty spicy and it seems to be a gamble whenever you order it), and the Mongolian is a winner wherever you go. Be sure to try an egg roll as an appetizer as well, it's more of a spring roll (veggies instead of meat, and a thinner/crispier shell), and it's always hit the spot. The service is just, eh. The waiter I had was nice enough, but didn't really "sell" me on any of the food! He also didn't offer any dessert, I wanted to try something unique, he just brought my check as soon as I took my last bite. Nonetheless, if you're looking for great Chinese and you know exactly what to get--come to Cheng Chongs! TIPS & TRICKS: * Park in the south side parking lot, you can nonchalantly go in through the side door instead of making a huge racket as you walk into the front. * Take a look at and appreciate the decor. Tried Zheng Zhong while on vacation in Afton. Everything at the table was sticky. The General Tso's Chicken and Orange Chicken had more breading than chicken and the Lo Mein was just noodles with a flavorless sauce on top. No vegetables. The food was inedible and we left our plates full. read more

Passing through Acton on our way to Jackson and had time to splurge for a nicer Sunday lunch. What a pleasant surprise. The atmosphere isn't anything to write about; it was very disjointed honestly, but the food was fabulous! The menu was extensive (16 pages as I recall) with everything from pineapple fried rice to volcano chicken to pho. Having been to Thailand and as one who cooks Thai food often at home, the food was certainly on par with the quality you would find at a restaurant in Los Angeles. Each of us ordered something different and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The portions were generous and 3 of the 4 of us took boxes of leftovers to go. Tonight's dinner was a smashing hit! Thank you Zheng Zhong for making our night so enjoyable. We were craving Mexican AND Chinese. After much debate, we decided to swing in here to give this restaurant a shot. It was not very crowded and we had our pick of seats. We chose a large table for 4 of us because we knew our plates wouldn't fit! We were hungry and ordered 5 dishes to share. The waiter didn't speak English very well, so that was entertaining, but he got our order correct! We had the Orange Chicken Sesame Chicken Mongolian trio dinner Kung Pao Chicken Chicken Chow Mien with crunchy noodles Egg Rolls Every single choice was excellent. The chicken was perfectly crunchy and the chow mien had the right amount of vegetables to sauce. The sauces were perfect and not too spicy. We certainly were glad to sample each of these dishes and loved to share with others. My favorite was the sesame chicken. My husband loved the trio mongolian. Trio was Chicken, beef and shrimp, but it was heavy on the chicken and only 2 little shrimp. Tasty tho :) The best part is, there was plenty left over, so we packaged it up for lunch tomorrow! The menu is large...a book, in fact! Lot's of choices but I'll stick with exactly my favorites next time I come. Tips and Tricks-- Try the lunch menu. Slim pickings in this town on a Sunday. Rolling into Afton for Sunday dinner, we learned that there are only two restaurants open. One was this Chinese restaurant and the other was Pizza Hut. Pizza Hut reviews looked really bad. We were the only patrons inside. Service was attentive and our waitress was very helpful recommending dishes. We have eaten at this restaurant multiple times since moving to the valley. We are always seated immediately, by a friendly employee. The menu is massive, and I feel like that's the one thing they could improve on, they need to widdle down the menu to just a few pages of their best dishes, instead of several pages of every item under the sun that they can possibly make. The food we order is consistently hot, fresh, and delicious! We always get the orange chicken, beef with snow peas, and pad Thai with chicken. Recently we ordered the sweet and sour pork and that was tasty as well. We prefer dinner served family style over the lunches. Not a huge fan of any of the soups they serve with their lunches. This is our go-to spot for Chinese food on Christmas Eve, and also when we just want some fresh delicious Chinese food. No there's not a lot of options for Chinese food in the area, but even of there were more we would still eat here first. read more

Dirty. Disgusting. Bad service. The restaurant was dirty, used plates on all of the tables, sauces that look like they are out of date. The food was disgusting- Eggroll was frozen from the inside, flavorless. The lo-mein noddles dishes were the worst we have had in our entire life. 2 days after visiting the place, we are still suffering from stomach aches. The service was awful - one waitress at the restaurant that seems to also be the chef. Do yourself a favor and stay away. read more

One of the waitress was rude to the other waiters and was bad mouthing them. She was loud and it made the entire atmosphere bad. The waiter who was serving our table was real nice and soft spoken. I was a vegetarian for one day and had to order the tofu fried rice. They had good choice for vegetarians as well. The food was good and tasted nice. I was very impressed! Visiting star valley and ate here twice. Chicken and veggies the first time and beef and broccoli the second time. The waitress remembered our group and the place was clean. The chicken and beef were tender and not dry but absorbed the sauce. The white sauce was simple but flavorful and complimeted all the veggies. This place is delicious. We've bought meals here, and fed the family. We have had lunch here. Every time it has been good. I really like the Cherry Chicken. Something I have only had here. The Walnut shrimp is good. There are other very delicious, and yummy foods here. You would never believe how good this place is, by looking at it on the outside. When inside, it is still a surprise. It is plain and functional. The food is great, and inexpensive. Don't be shy about trying it. There really are too many items on the menu, but many are ones you would never see at another place.The lunch special is the way to go, in my opinion. Rolling through Afton today we were on the hunt for some lunch. My daughter said "hey, let's have Chinese food" so we stopped. I honestly was not expecting Chinese food let alone REALLY GOOD Asian food but we had a treat today. I asked what was the thing they made the best and the waitress said "do you like spicy"? I said yes and she recommended their Thai curry. I ordered the red with chicken. My daughter ordered the king pow chicken and my wife ordered the tempura vegetables. Needless to say they rocked all our meals and we all loved it. I was not expecting to be so delighted so I just have to post a great review of this place. Excellent restaurant with friendly staff. Is great for take out or dine in. Im always dumbfounded at the size and scope of the menu. As someone who likes to try everything at a restaurant before settling into a usual Ive had the hardest time here with their 40 page menu. Its hard to know what a lot of the food items are though and a menu with pictures would save me googling every third item. Also every time I've eaten here it has hurt my stomach a few hours later. Im never sure if its just what I picked or if its the restaurant as a whole. Either way I would probably still eat here just because of how awesome everything always tastes. read more

Live in town and find myself eating here more frequently than my budget allows. I eat here at least once a week. I am addicted to their Thai curries especially the green. Everything we've had is very good. My parents visit from Salt Lake City every other month and request to go here every time. They say it's as good as the top Chinese/ Thai restaurants in Salt Lake. Service is excellent. They actually want to serve you, unlike some other restaurants in town that seem put out you came in their door and now you made their day more busy. read more

Had a wonderful dinner on the way back home from Yellowstone. We (4 from Southern China and 1 from North China) had several Chinese food in West Yellowstone and Cody in the past two weeks, but none of them is compatible with this one. Its oinion beef and beef stew are really authentic. The price may be a little bit high, but consider the restaurant locates in a less populated town without too many residents, it is acceptable. From the outside and even when you get in it doesn't look like much. But, the service was excellent and the food was really good and fresh. I can't believe my favorite Chinese restaurant is in Afton, WY! The restaurant's appearance is unassuming, but the quality of the food is outstanding. They have an extensive menu of typical and also unique items; we just went with the pretty conventional cashew chicken and chicken lo mein. You know when Chinese food tastes like it's been sitting in the same lukewarm pot for for two days and the flavors are indistinguishable? These dishes were not that at all. The ingredients tasted so fresh and flavorful, and the portion sizes were large but not out-of-control unfinishable. Surprisingly good Chinese food for a a nondescript restaurant in a town in Wyoming with a population of about 2,000 people. The chefs and the servers are all legitimate Chinese which helps I think. The ambiance of the restaurant makes no sense- it looks like they just recently took over a western-themed bar and grill and didn't have the budget to remodel. Also, the seatbacks in the booths are made of particle board with exposed screws. Oh well. The prices were a lot higher than I expected. Lunch entrees were $8 to $10 and Dinner was generally $12 plus. We came for lunch and ordered the Special which was $9.50 for a bowl of soup, a large egg roll, a HUGE Crag Rangoon, a grain (white rice, fried rice, or Lo Mein), and two separate small entrees. This was way too much food for lunch. I think they would be better off cutting the price by $2 and the portions in half. As for the food itself, I thought it was quite good. My Orange Chicken and Szechwan Beef were both great. My wife's Mango shrimp and Mongolian Beef were quite satisfactory. Our Chinese server didn't speak English all that well which made for entertaining order taking, but he and the rest of the staff were very sweet. Also, there was one young blond-haired American fellow who provided a lifeline when the Sino-Anglo communications broke down. Don't know if he was just an employee or related to the ownership. I don't think I'll ever be back in Afton since this was probably a once in a lifetime road trip. But if I ever were to come back, I will be happy to dine here again. I wish them good luck! read more

I haven't loved everything I have had here, and with the length of the menu I have only tried a fraction of the items. But I do enjoy the Mongolian Beef and the Lo Mein. I want a fan of the sweet and sour chicken (too many pieces were mushy). While I would pick other Chinese restaurants that I enjoy in other locations (like Idaho Falls) and it certainly won't beat out options from larger cities, given the limited number of options in Star Valley, I frequently choose my go to order here when visiting. read more

I've been here a decent number of times the past few years. When it first opened at the location under colter's lodge it was pretty solid, the food was fresh and although it tasted like there was the same sauce in many of the dishes, it was pretty good. They moved locations to right next to the elk horn arch, and I decided to try it today. I was very disappointed. First of all, when you walk in the building is pretty dirty. The seats and chairs were nothing special, but that doesn't bother me too much. The lady who was there today was pretty unhelpful when we were ordering and asking what dish was best (the menu is 26 pages). Service was slow. We got some hot and sour soup, an easy dish that's hard to screw up (we thought). Tasted it and it was like eating melted plastic. Oops. The potstickers were decent, surprisingly. Then we got the Szechuan beef and kung Pao beef, both had the exact same sauce and vegetables. The beef was very undercooked, almost raw, I took a bite and gagged. We also got the boneless duck, which was half frozen and uncooked. The bok choy was actually pretty good, so that's what I mostly ate. Overall I'd suggest avoiding this place now, which is a shame because when it first opened I thought it was great. The vegetable dishes are good though, and if I had to guess you probably would be fine with fried rice or chow mein. read more

We had lunch there today, not bad, not the best I've ever had. Service was good considering when we walked on at 11:50 there weren't any other customers and no one greeted us. I wandered into the kitchen and found the host, we were then seated. My wife had the peanut chicken and I had the crispy duck. Both were good although the sauce on my wife's did taste like peanut. Also as a side note the menu is a book and is 25 pages long. read more
