Stavros, the owner of Zig's posted a comment to my original review last week, and I decided to pop in and give them another look-see today. Well, let's give them credit, the place looks somewhat better than when I was there 18 months ago. The big stained ceiling tiles have been replaced. there is still a little evidence of roof leakage, but nowhere near as bad as before. The planters still look out of place, but to be honest, I don't know what the fix is for those things either. And best of all, they no longer permit smoking on the very enclosed patio. They have signs showing they comply with the new LA law, and the pace no longer smells of secondhand smoke. My visit was about 1015 am, and as you might expect at that odd hour for a meal, the place was mostly empty. I ordered a chili size, and actually was quite pleased. They use a fresh chili with cheddar and onions over 2 hamburger patties and a toasted roll. It was actually one of the best I had had in a long time. The chili was homemade, and my only complaint was a small one. I actually came across a bay leaf concealed in my meal. At least that proved it wasn't chili from a can. Service was a whole 'nother thing though. Both of the other parties were finishing up as I ordered, and my waitress saw this as "break-time". She was more concerned with texting and watching the TV that plays over the counter seating. I felt like I was interrupting when I wanted a refill and the check. To Stavros credit, he noticed the problem from his spot in the kitchen and pointed it out to her before I needed to complain. read more

Most Sunday, I yelped for a place to take the family for brunch, and I happened to chance upon Zig's. My husband were feeling ravenous while waiting for me to decide on a place, to the point of just pulling up into a little hole in the wall I found with high ratings. We had the back patio all to ourself because the inside were crammed with patrons meaning its a "popular joint". We proceeded in ordering the garlic fries, buffalo wings, tuna salad, a burger, fish tacos, chicken strips, grilled cheese sandwich, and pancakes. We all agreed that the food was made with quality. This establishment is quite the diamond in the rough. Exactly what you'd expect from an old time, hole-in-the-wall diner. Prices that don't cost 1/2 a days salary, down-to-earth service, and great tasting food. Zig's is my go-to breakfast restaurant in the central San Fernando Valley. The prices are nearly half that of comparable eateries such as Crave Cafe on Ventura. This allows you to leave the waitresses better tips. Typically a large breakfast for two doesn't cost more than $25 + tip vs Crave which will usually be around $40 + tip. The waitresses are friendly and are always willing to get you what you need. The best part about Zig's is that it's a true neighborhood family Diner. Staff remembers repeat customers, even knowing their names and what their favorite meals are. The location isn't the most upscale or well kept but the food makes up for everything. The crepes and breakfast burritos are absolutely delicious. Everything tastes fresh and flavorful. read more

I have never been to a restaurant where the employees are such a disappointment, except the cook. Thank you sir, food was great. As for the 3 female employees, manager you need to clean house! Start with the older woman first, apparently she is much smarter than you. ( from what your customers had to listen to over and over) she's a bad apple and ruining the bunch. Just standing there bitching they don't have a much hours and that you need to "bring back Friday & Saturday nights". Don't! Hire people who show great service and just don't hide in the corner IGNORING paying customers. Saw the woman with colored hair walk up and pour chocolate sauce on this gentleman's crepe ( without asking). Um.... no! She would have lost that hand. The place needs cleaning- obviously the girls are too busy to pick up a rag or broom. This experience was like being in middle school again, grow up and do your jobs ladies or leave. Zig's is a local classic in this area, and there are not many left. The menu is typical comfort food fare. Nothing will blow your socks off, but it's all well-made with quality ingredients. I have had the huevos rancheros, Biscuits and Gravy and Redneck Benedict. It's all reliably good (but nothing you want to write Guy Fieri about.) The horseshoe counter is a fun place to sit if you enjoy joining in the conversations that spontaneously happen (but check your politically correct ego at the door, as all opinions are shared.) Great place. Lots of items to choose from. Burgers, Bullet, Ton on a bun, fried Zuchini. Been coming here since 1988. Changed owners a few years back. Seems mostly the same as far as the food goes. The service? Well, we have been here twice in the last 3 months. The young girl that waited on us was very sweet. She really tried hard. But, she never came back to us after the food was there and she made a mistake on my wife's meal both times. She was very nice, but she's no Stacy! I hope she gets a little better. read more

It was our first time coming to Zig's, i've seen their facebook ad & been trying to come for months, until now i got the chance. At first we didnt know if they were gonna seat us or we seat ourselves, so we sat ourselves. I wish they would be more welcoming & would greet us properly, but oh well. Now as for the food, we got Crepes All Day Breakfast, & to be honest it was pretty good, for the price it was well worth it. The only reccomendation i'd give would be to add a bit more nutella as it was hard to taste it. Great, inexpensive breakfast! Jammed every Sunday morning with good reason. I usually have the "lean breakfast" --- eggs well-prepared, good sausage, seasonal fruit. found this place through an ad in Kapitbahay SFV News (a local Filipino paper). Tasty, hearty, homestyle American fare. The place needs some fixing up but the new owner is very friendly and regularly introduces himself to the clientele. Food is really good! Loved the Eggs Benedict, talk about a satisfying breakfast! Really hit the spot. Service can be hit or miss, the waitresses probably need some basic customer sevice coaching. The place is bright- too bright at times, they need some blinds as the windshields of cars parked outside reflect almost lethally-blinding rays as you sit there trying to desperately read your monitor. Since we've got plenty of space in this block, and I've subsequently referred to this place in a review for a Lafayette, CA (of all places) restaurant, allow me to add another non-sandwich highlight of Zig's: Greek salad. It's an abundantly assembled bowl containing all of the requisite ingredients, more than enough to share with another if you prefer. Zig's is one of several hamburger stands in the Van Nuys, Reseda area that is Greek- and Middle Eastern-influenced. Soon I will evaluate the Greek salad at Panos Char Broiler at Victory and Woodley, which I've patronized since...no--NOOOO!...I just can't tell you! Here's how it all went down: Walked in - stood waiting not greeted Noticed table roped off with caution tape Bucket catching flowing water from leaking roof Still standing 3 mins later... Figured maybe it's a sit ur own self kinda place, sat at one of the 3 dirty tables available... Looked around again... Not greeted still no instruction - Walked out! Now I know LA isn't really a place that deals really well with heavy constant rainfall since it is rare so maybe they didn't know their roof had a open hole for water to flow through like a faucet... I can semi forgive that...well somewhat....but I couldn't force myself to eat at an outside raining lunch picnic party in a dirty park without the least amount of hospitality. I'm from Louisiana y'all... where hospitality is an all time high so the bar is pretty high. Bottom line: The place was a dump. Maybe my next visit to LA I will try when it's sunny. read more
