I know that costs are increasing so the prices for take out food are going up rapidly this year, but when that is coupled with issues regarding the appearance quality, and value of the food, it is a recipe for decline. Zippy's uses these large bowls with a raised lid for their salads, but never get near to filling them near to the top nowadays. And the meat lovers plate had a weird ball of corned beed hash that was cold. The bacon was also cold on the inside and singed on the outside. Same with the portugese sausage (cold on the inside. And the egg was overcooked. I've ordered this so many times in the past so I know how it supposed to be, and have tolerated a slow decline (that I forgave because of the pamdemic). And I know it's kinda OCD but look at the presentation of the breakfast plate....just careless and sloppy... like the cooking. It turns out that today was sort of a last straw, and we finally agreed that it's time to go back to cooking our own breakfasts. Mom didn't cook enough dinner one night so I was left hungry. I couldn't take it anymore so I caved it and went to get some good ole Zippys. Called ahead to order or you can order online. I waited about 5 mins before I left my house to pick it up. By the time I got there it was ready. Pickup was fast and everything went smoothly. I saw all the workers wearing masks and some even has gloves on. I dont recommend coming to this place at night by yourself because there can be some sketchy people loitering around so please be careful. Over the past pew years Zippys has been getting more and more expensive :( but the food is still yummy and hits the spot every time. Had breakfast here a few weeks ago. This was my first Zippy's experience. Breakfast was okay; nothing great but not bad. However, I had hash browns with my omelet. I asked for the hash browns to be cooked "well done". The first attempt was just the normal light brown. I returned them. The second and third attempts were pretty much identical to number one. Sent back two more times. Attempt number four was done properly. Yeah, I know these are mass produced and cooking the hash browns more than usual is unusual ... but geez, you'd think after one fail, or maybe two, the cook would have "gotten" it. My family and I chose this place for our last dinner in Oahu. We were greeted with the most sweetest hostess (forgot her name) and had a really nice waiter. Given the time that we went there and the minimum staff that they had I feel as if they did a good job and the food came out in a timely manner. The food was good as expected to be from Zippys. - It's not uncommon to wait 20 minutes for a take out order. - The "pass" gets backed up with completed orders for customers, but there are no employees to pack them and hand off. Think I'm kidding? Look at the photo with the kitchen pass with all of the completed orders, but no one to bag them. More importantly, look at the computer screen, which is full of orders that are still pending. Some of those orders have been open for 15+ minutes. That means customers are waiting for their orders which might be ready but are sitting there getting cold instead. Sloppy. - Zippy's employees are the masters of avoiding eye contact. A customer had to yell "Excuse Me!!!" And the supervisor yelled back "One moment!" They won't look you in the eye after you've waited for so long. Sometimes they even apologize, but don't bet on it. Airline employees are perfectionists compared to these workers. - A fellow customer looked at me and said "Wow! This is bad. Maybe someone should say something?" Yup. Got you. So who's fault is this? It's so easy to blame the front line employees, but what if they're not staffed fully or fully trained? But they are not disciplined in the arts of Customer Service. I'm placing the blame on Zippy's Corporate Management, if there is such a thing. They allow this to happen unchecked and customers have to bear the brunt of this. Enforce proper standards and perhaps your employees will give a damn. Don't think that this is limited to the Vineyard location only. I've had poor service elsewhere also. Had the spaghetti and fried chicken combo for around $9 and it was filling and satisfying in a old-school cafeteria sort of way. The restaurant itself is in need of a makeover soon: areas on the walls need some paint, and a deep-cleaning of the tiled surfaces. Nevertheless, the overall condition is pretty clean and well-lit, and they serve a decent variety of dishes, from chili, burgers, saimin, and daily specials, including fresh fish. Their ox tail saimin looks good, but like all oxtail dishes, it tops out at around $17/bowl. When did the cheaper cuts like ox tail and flank steak become so darn expensive? People used to scorn what is now the "in" food... Times change, but Zippy's remains a tried and true institution. On a different note, my non-profit is doing a chili sale, and the corporate folks at their King Street location do a bang up job of supporting the community and making it easy to raise money. Maybe you're not a fan of their chili, but who can resist a kid asking: "Eh, Uncle, you like buy some chili tickets?" Bravo Zippy's for supporting our 'ohana! Today my son wanted to Zippys so we went to vineyard Zippys. Long story short they were really short staffed. Only two waitresses were handling the entire floor and the managers as helping in the kitchen. It's sad to see them so short staffed but with that being said I have to put the spot light on my waitress April who was surprisingly handling all of her customers with poise and professionalism which is rare nowadays especially when I witnessed how some customers weren't as understanding as I was. Love that this location has a drive-thru. It makes picking up food easier since I have a toddler. Sometimes the wait is long but it's just because they're busy. I was looking around because I really wanted either an apple napple or a maple stick but then I saw a bunch of flies in the glass. I triple-checked to see if they were actually in the glass that the pastries were in and they were. The service at the Zippy's was good. However, when I viewed the new menu, it's outrageous. Tailoring their menu to locals and advertising as a "local" destination is false advertising because The average middle-class family cannot afford to dine in. Tuesday special was roast Turkey. In the take out area it was $16.95 and on the inside it was $19.95. To get a complete meal which included salad drink, and a dessert we paid extra $10.75. So for one entrée and a complete meal the bill came up to $30 plus. Oh did I mention that they charge 2% kitchen fee on the bill therefore with tax and tip for that one meal we paid $38. What a Disappointment. The turkey itself was dry and the portion size was very small for a $19.95 plate. Paying $19.95 for this plate of two scoops of mashed potato corn and turkey 1 slice brown meat and 2 slices of white meat was outrageous. Especially since turkey is cheap! read more

This Zippy's is located right outside of downtown. It's held in an outside kind of setting with the table and seating area inside of the restaurant. The parking here is kind of small. There's only one way in through Maunakea St. and one way out through Vineyard. Right by the Zippy's is a Napolean's Bakery. The staff and customer service is good. Sometimes parking can be limited when it's busy so I guess just make sure you come at a good time and time it right if you are in a rush to get food. Horrible experience. I ordered online two platters two days in advance. I called three times and finally was able to talk to someone who said they could cut the spam musubis I ordered in half. The worker said not a problem. I then get a call from Zippy's saying we cannot cut the musubis in half because we are short handed! I visited this location with my boyfriend last night. We typically go to Dillingham and have exceptional service but wanted a change of scenery (wanted to eat at Zippy's still) and happened on to this location. The restaurant looked great and parking was easy. When we walked in the first thing we noticed is that the restaurant smelled like a dirty mop. It was a big turn off but we did see that it was busy and the workers ran around that place so quickly. We expected a little wait time which ended up being about 20 minutes. By this time we had pretty much decided on what we'd eat so it'd save us some time on the table. We were a little put off that there was an entire section that was open, clean, and unseated. When we finally got seated we were so happy to be in an extra cold area! Our server was Michael he seemed like he was new and he was very nice but you could tell that we wasn't completely comfortable with what he was doing yet. He tried very hard to make a great impression. As we were sitting he reached over and fixed a couple of things on the table including the little specials menu. We giggled a little to each other but commended him for trying to give us the best experience. Michael took our order very easily and even asked if we preferred hot mustard with our Zip Min and Wun Tun min. I was happy because I feel like its a waste because I never eat it. Our food came out very quickly and it was perfect. One note--I ordered onion rings and they were kind of small. Maybe look into bigger sized onions? we have been going to this Zippy's after my group of friends had clocked out for work for the past couple weeks. We come around 11:30pm-midnight and had no problem being served the last three times we had ate in. today (08/21/19) 5 of us, including myself decided to come to our usual late night spot & signed in per usual. my friend had wrote the wrong number of attendees on the first line so she rewrote it on the line below it. The waitress (Karen) comes around and off the bat had already given us attitude about writing on two lines. first strike. she then takes a few minutes and waits for the other waitress to come around and gives her a dissatisfied look that she had to take 5 more guests when there wasn't even much people to begin with and even seemed hesitant to take us! last time I checked this location was 24/7 so I know for a fact we weren't late to the point that the kitchen was closing up. she sat us down in a booth and came back to take our orders in an irritated manner. even gave attitude to my 14 yr old brother in law bc he mixed up what 'set a' & 'set b' was. excuse me! he made a mistake, you could have clarified it for him instead of yelling and giving him a tone of voice. Strike 2! Karen then came around to throwing the plates and bowls down to our table. we understand that the table is small but merely just tossing them onto the countertop isn't gonna solve the situation. then my brother in law flags her down half way through our meal bc she forgot to bring the drinks they had ordered. she then gives him an eye and grabs her notepad as if she thinks he's lying. Unbelievable! even if he didn't order the drink to begin with, he was asking nicely for his drink! at the end we had asked her to split the checks since we were paying on separate cards and seemed irritated with it. At that point we just wanted to go home and get out of there. the part that bothers me the most is that she circles the GRATITUDE PORTION of the check and writes " thank you" below it. WOW!!! the audacity you have ! you expect me to tip you for giving me shitty service??! so we ignore it and proceed to signing our checks. Karen on the other hand opens up MY check to see if we had tipped her and her exact words were " oh that's the price you pay for the food. You didn't give me a tip" EXCUSE ME?! you're lucky I haven't called your manager on the spot lady! do NOT be asking me for a tip when you have done nothing but bring attitude and horrible customer service to us. Why the heck does the take out food take so long to come out?! I can't be the only one thinking this. Am I? Every single time I go to Zippy's (take out side) I'm waiting 20+ mins no matter if there were 10 people in front of me or 1 person in front of me. It's pretty ridiculous. I ordered 3 zip meal chili's (one regular, two vegetarian) & I waited 45 minutes... that's such a long time to wait for 3 items. But of course, I don't know their protocol on how things are cooked, but for some reason that amount of time seems excessive. I also noticed that their drive thru phone order line was backed up as well. There was a woman waiting just as long as me (maybe even longer) in the drive they line, which is only for phone orders, meaning she would have had to call ahead & she's still waiting 40+ minutes?! Kinda defeats the purpose of calling ahead, don't you think? On another occasion, I called Zippy's to try & make a drive thru phone order. I called 4 times with no answer... and this has happened at different Zippy's so I'm guessing there is some things needing to be fixed within the chain. I love Zippy's & I always will because, c'mon, it's Zippy's, Hawaii's favorite restaurant, but I get slightly more annoyed every time I come here because something is always off. It's late and got the munchies. Looked up the closest location brought me to one I've never been to before. Although the parking lot is a good size it was proving to be a little difficult finding parking. Eventually I did. Service is the usual. It does take some time go get your order since they don't want to cook ahead too much. It was a cold night and every one ordered won tun min. It came out steaming hot. So hot I couldn't eat had to wait for it to cool down. Still, I tried to get the hot tasty broth down because I wasn't wearing much. It's not enclosed like the many other locations so the wind chill factor was definitely making an impact. lol I do like how they have several zip pacs and mini meals now because I seem to be always on the go and I don't eat that much. That's what I tell myself every day. I often look at their menu online then call my order in for a drive thru pick up. Not all locations have that so you may want to check first. I was tempted to get dessert from Napolean's Bakery but decided to play it straight. Maybe I should have gotten the lemon bar? There is a restroom to the left of the counter but it has a sign for employee's only. So, you can use them inside the restaurant. No need to ask, just go, cuz when you gotta go you gotta go. I didn't have to go. Inside the restaurant it was warmer. It was also very busy leaving several people waiting in the front for their name to be called. The good thing about Zippy's is that they are so consistent so no matter which one you go to you can expect the same quality and portion size, which is a very good thing. I ordered the Marcus Mariota special last night which consisted of garlic chicken, 4 pieces of portuguese sausage, a hot dog, and a piece of spam. The garlic chicken made the meal with it's delicious sauce covering parts of the rice. I sent the portuguese sausage back because it was undercooked, but when I got it back it was perfectly cooked and piping hot delicious. I would definitely order this again for under $10 in the dine in side of the restaurant. My wife had her delicious small saimin which is always cooked to perfection. The service was friendly and efficient even though they were busy. We know we won't be disappointed very often coming to Zippy's! read more

Last night (5/21), I went to pick up my phone order to the the drive through window but none of the 2 workers there acknowledged me. But to my disappointment, an old lady who is in her between 70's-80's was the only cashier and taking so long to function which is I understand. The other one was the food runner and she was just keep yelling and shouting to the old lady infront of the customers. She was so rude and very unprofessional!!!!Unbelievable!!! No respect at all! I understand her frustration but at least respect your co worker no matter who he/she is. Long story short, the mgr came out to help and she sincerely apologized for the long wait which is okay. To the mgr of this restaurant, please don't let the old lady works alone in the cashier area. At least, have someone to help her out esp if it gets busy. This is my go-to Zippy's, especially since I live up the hill from this location. Food is food and you really can't beat the prices. I'm giving it a 3-stars because of one staff member who I will not reveal the name of. As a broke college student, sometimes scrambling coins and loose change is the only way we can pay for a meal. I came in and ordered a spaghetti, and paid in all quarters. The cashier just looked at me in disgust, gave me a huge "sigh," and rolled his eyes. He then began to count the quarters. He did it really slowly, like he was trying to embarrass me in front of the customers waiting in line behind me. Zippy's is one of the favorite local fast-food hang out places in Honolulu. It's popular with both the youth and seniors. They offer food from Chili to Fried Chicken to Fresh Island fish to tonkatsu curry to spaghetti. They make their own cakes - from Chantilly to guava chiffon to German Chocolate to Chocolate dobash. They have a wide assortment on the menu. You never get tired of eating there! Now get this - I just got off my flight from LAX - Honolulu and was starved because the food on the airline food (United) has been extremely bad (international and domestic) in the last couple of months. I wanted to eat Zippy's Burrito (deep fried) and Chili, because it is comfort food for me. I used my handy-dandy Yelp! application to find the number of Zippys and called to place a to-go order. Steven, who took my order and said it would be ready in 10 minutes. He was very helpful and got my order correct! The best part of it - I got to Zippys in about 6-7 minutes after the call. I drove right up in their handy-dandy drive through lane. Literally stepped out of the car less than 2 feet, and paid for my meal. The super friendly counter lady cheerily gave me a HELLO and I was off in the car within 2 minutes. THAT IS SERVICE! Hollah! I love the oxtail soup, Korean chicken, and the Portuguese Bean Soup. There are so many options, for nearly any palate. Keep in mind, this is a diner/fast food. I must say one thing, don't let the picture in the menu fool you like it did me. The grilled Biscuit is not like the Liliha Bakery one. Here, its a dense buttermilk biscuit, served with nothing. I asked the waitress for the red jelly, like in the picture. She pointed to the container on the table holding grape & strawberry jelly. I literally asked her if they had other jelly in the back like the picture. I swear that picture was very deceiving. I should have asked for the menu again, just to snap the pic for Yelp as a comparable to what I received. MY boyfriend will kill me when he finds out that I rated his beloved Zippy's with anything less than 5.. But I think he loves it more for nostalgia than taste.. Because taste-wise it's just "A-OK..." He had a zip pack and I had a fried chicken chili plate.. The zip pack, I feel, I could make at home and my chili tasted the same as the frozen one from Glaziers. Also, I didn't like that the chili was not hot (temperature). I like that they offer brown rice and the fried chicken was actually pretty good.. Not oily + it was very juicy and the skin was nice and crisp. Service was fast.
