Some of the best kebab I've ever had in the DMV. The seasoning was on point. I tried a chicken and kofta combo. I'm normally a kofta girl but actually the chicken ended up being my favorite - it was so juicy. The rice was very fragrant, I'm still thinking about it a couple weeks later. Naan was fluffy and soft, a wonderful complement to the meal. Service was very quick despite the full restaurant. I'm devastated I only discovered this place right before I moved! So look - the food at Ziza is good, dare I say great. It's still some of the best chicken (cook and taste) I've ever had out. BUT... The communication issues are PAINFUL. There just seems to be a major disconnect that, no matter how hard one tries, something is going to get missed or messed up. This time around I placed the simplest of orders: 2 chicken kabob meals and a side of pumpkin without yogurt. I placed an online order and when it arrived, they told me I'd have to wait 5min cause they needed to remake the pumpkin (it had yogurt). Ok, cool, no biggie at all - it happens! So I wait. A few min later the gentleman asks if I'm ok with ground beef on my pumpkin and I'm like WHU? I was so confused, but said no, juuuuust pumpkin please. I picked up a menu to help solve the mystery of this bizarre question. Turns out, right there at the very end of the description... "ground beef sauce." I expressed my appreciation because yeah - Ew, and I've just never EVER seen that on an afghan menu before (yogurt and pumpkin? Yes. Yogurt, pumpkin, and ground beef? Nah.) So I get my food and get home (I now realize I have to absolutely check every meal in order before leaving) and, again, flabbergasted! The kabob meal should include: naan, side salad, cilantro yogurt sauce, and rice. Only they were freestyling our meal, apparently. We didn't get any cilantro yogurt sauce. Instead we got two different surprise sides. One looks like spinach, the other spiced chick peas. Both are delicious - but dude, just give me what I asked for - what YOUR menu advertises. Please!? From my two visits here are the lessons I've learned: 1. Order ahead 2. READ the menu CAREFULLY LOL 3. Check that meal before you leave 4. Don't bother asking too many questions - just hope for the best and take it back to be fixed if it's wrong 5. Enjoy the food - it's (still) really good! read more

Easily the best place to eat in this area! The food is DELICIOUS!!!! The prices are excellent and the restaurant is beautiful! The customer service is also top tier! I tried it for the first time yesterday and I went back the next day. I can't get enough! So far my family and I have tried the chicken shawarma, kids chicken kabob with potatoes, chicken tikka masala (exploding with flavor), and today I ordered the chicken and shrimp kabob entree with baklava. The Chicken & Shrimp Kabob Combo was enough for myself, my husband and our two toddlers. I can't express enough how amazing this place is!!!!!!! I visited for an Iftar with my family. The restaurant was run by Afghans but now it is not. While it is still run by Muslims, they behaved extremely disrespectful when I asked if its already iftar time. It was unfortunate to find that the new team has so much less respect to their customers they definitely require some additional training in how to properly interact with customers. Throughout my dining experience here, I encountered a few instances where the service was not up to par. For example, the waitstaff seemed disorganized and unprepared, causing delays in receiving our food and drinks. Additionally, the new management team appeared to lack the warmth and friendliness that I had previously experienced at this establishment. Despite these issues, I could tell that the restaurant had great potential. The menu was diverse and well-prepared, and the ambiance was still cozy and inviting. However, I would highly recommend that the new management invest in training their staff on how to properly engage with customers, as this could greatly improve the overall dining experience. Overall, while I was not completely satisfied with my visit to the restaurant, I am hopeful that with some additional training and attention to customer service, this establishment could once again become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. read more

This is the place that I have been waiting for. Middle eastern food in Howard County. The food is fantastic. Flavorful and packed with great seasonings and spices. I like the chicken chile kabob. I just split and finished a bowl of afghan icecream with my wife a few minutes ago. The dessert is creamy, and the toppings and spices make it super refreshing. I apologized for my mistake and said thank you, but the kind staff member insisted that it was no problem to change my order and even gave me the shawarma to go, no extra charge. A recommendation popped up for ZiZa so my wife and I headed over. I'm generally not a big fan of counter service restaurants vs. wait service and was ready to go elsewhere, but my wife said we should give it a try. Opened to door to walk in and the kitchen aromas enveloped us, it was wonderful. We walked up to the counter and we quickly greeted as we gazed at the menu boards trying to take it all in. My wife ordered Samosas and a Lamb Kabob, I opted for the Chicken Tikka Masala a regular favorite. We were asked where we'd sit, choose a table by number, and went to sit. The Samosas (we'd ordered 4) were brought out, they were large, full looking and in the more traditional style that those wrapped in Filo Dough. They came with the expected mint laced green sauce and another one that looked like an apple compote, which of course it wasn't. Both were very nice, the 'apple' one had a bit of a kick. The dough was much lighter and flaky than we had anticipated, we're used to it being heavy, bread like and bland. The filling was also a pleasant with chunks of potato and spiced in a very uniquely pleasant manner. My wife would have liked the Lamb to be a bit more on the rare side, but, it was otherwise good. We both enjoyed the accompanying salad which consisted of proper greens and drizzled with a good dressing. Now onto the Chicken Tikka Masala, chicken was warm, tender, and was very tender. The Basmati Rice was exactly what I'd come to expect from Afghani and Indian establishments. When I later spoke to the owner I learned that the dish is the hottest on the menu, meaning 1/2 of it came home and I left red faced, sweating, with tingling lips and tongue. You would probably think the peppers put the disk in the mild to medium range, but it was overkill for me. It was still hard to put my fork down as the Masala tasted far too good. The owner suggested I tell them the dish was too hot for me and that they could add yogurt or sugar to tone it down before serving it to me. Hmm. read more

During my first visit, I was underwhelmed with my spicy, chicken tikka masala - served with a slick of oil, glazing the top and a large half of dense, chewy pita. I feel that the food is an after thought, not something derived from passionate cooks and ownership. Chicken tikka masala is one of our favs. This time around, my bin saw more action, than my stomach. Tonight I decided to give ZiZa one more try, with the the Friday special - lamb curry. Huge chunks of amazingly tender lamb, just enough gravy to cling to the meat and little for dipping and once again, a pool of oil, gathered into one of the smaller portions of the tray. The sauce could have been good, had there not been all that oil and flavorless heat and the salad in the other compartment, was merely torn lettuce. An Afghan salad had all the proper components, which were fresh and crunchy, but lacked a squeeze of lime and those lovely herbs, cilantro and mint. First time here. We often order Afghan cuisine, usually from Maiwand, where we've been ordering for many, many years -- since they first opened. Also like Helmand in Bmore. Ordered online. Said the order would be ready for a particular time, got there a few minutes after that, order not ready. *Long* wait. No apology, didn't even look like they hurried... One star off. Meat was super-spicy (ordered lamb and chicken kebab), uncomfortably so, and this is from a family that like hot vindaloo when ordering Indian. Most of us could only eat one piece of the meat, teens powered through and were then thirsty the rest of the night. Falafel did not taste freshly cooked, and honestly, tasted a bit like "packet mix" falafel from Trader Joes. One star off. Salad great -way fresher/better quality than Maiwand. Rice nice too. Bread great. The ambiance in the restaurant looked good (had plenty of time to check out during the long wait). Bottom line, I'll try them again but I'll ask if they can dial down the heat in the spice on the meat. If it's a marinade and can't be changed, this is not going to be a restaurant we will return to. This was our first of what will be many visits to Ziza. We were warmly greeted as we read over the vast menu. Seeing our indecision, we were asked about what flavors we liked and offered suggestions to consider. The food is all prepared fresh and it is evident in the flavor. Expertly seasoned, the angus beef was tender and juicy and the chicken chili kabob was phenomenal. The servings were generous enough to pack up the remainder for lunch the next day. While waiting for entrees we were blown away by the fresh hummus, sabzi and chickpea curry with warm naan. Needless to say Ziza is quite a treasure and you owe it to yourself to visit soon and often. read more
