Okay, this place (bakery) screams cute! Cute butterfly icing cookies, cute fruit tarts, really really cute froggy shaped cookies, and some other, absolutely beautifully handcrafted desserts. It's darn cutesmatoots with a splash of clean. I think my friends and I took a good 15 minutes deciding what to try on a budget. I ultimately purchased one peanut butter cookie and called it a day. The cookie was covered in peanut halves and it looked mighty delicious, until I took that bite. The bite... was... extremely... AWFUL! It was absolutely the most off-putting peanut butter cookie on the face of the planet. It wasn't that the peanuts weren't fresh nor was it because it didn't taste like peanut butter. It's because the freakin' cookie was SUPER SALTY!! I'm not even joking. It's as if they used salted peanut butter, mixed it with salted butter and baked with more salt instead of sugar. And perhaps they did the latter because you know, just sometimes, salt is mistaken for sugar. It was just downright horrible. I traveled all the way to Tustin, to buy a salty cookie. Trippy was not happy. You'd think they'd try at least part of the cookie dough before baking it too and considering they're a bakery in general, you'd think they know.. Lately, we've been on a pastry obsession and track down bakeries/cafes. We were SO SO SO looking forward to Zov's pastries because of the reviews and pictures, but (womp womp womp) what a let-down! Yes, they all look delicious behind the glass. Yes, they are very pricey ($7-8 each) but we don't mind paying for exquisite (which is what you'd expect at that price). We got 3 and paid $24: Apple Caramel Bread Pudding: Worst bread pudding consistency ever. Kind of a big mush of apple bread. Taste was bland. Flourless Chocolate Cake: Only decent pastry from the 3 we got. Notice I said decent, but delicious or amazing. Fruit Tart: Yikes. Worst fruit tart in the OC so far (and we've had many). This is so dry because there is hardly any cream between the crust and the fruit. Just edible, no "wow." We will not be coming back here! I really wanted to give Zov's 5 stars, just based on looks alone. Call it pastry envy, if you will. Whatever. We sat in the café side of operations, with the pastry case behind us, so we could have our dinner without too much distraction. The North African lamb stew smelled, and from what I understand, tasted amazing. I ordered the butternut squash ravioli, and to my dismay, it was like pumpkin pie in a pasta pillow. The hummus plate was tasy, not superb, but still pretty good. The golden lentil soup was pretty good, though not great, I've definitely had better. The service was good, our server was very attentive and refilled drinks often. The kitchen was a bit slow though, for a restaurant not yet at capacity. The bill was what floored us, coming to about $40 a person with tip and tax. We had ordered just soft drinks, no wine or anything. For the caliber of the food, it was kinda pricey, I think. We declined dessert and walked to the pastry case. I chose a lemon cheesecake a coconut cupcake, both of which looked spectaculary pretty but were slightly underwhelming. $16 for two pastries, a bit much, and I thought they'd be yummier. Came here for a wine tasting event. It was held on the outdoor patio and guests were treated to a bunch of finger foods -- which apparently, they serve larger sized portions of on the menu. The smoked salmon crostini with capers were very tasty especially when the bread was fresh. I got a couple of pieces which were a bit stale. The penne pasta was lovely -- sauce had a slight kick to it. Chicken skewers were also moist and tender with great flavors when I snagged a couple as soon as they came out. The best part was our lovely server Thomas who made sure our water glasses were refilled and the empty plates and wine glasses were promptly removed. Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and Zov's was the happening spot. Clean, comfortable, dark wood ambiance with indoor and outdoor seating. There is also a bistro in the back ~ check their website for hours. It seems like certain sections are open during select meal service. Their menu includes appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, pastas, meats and seafood with a Mediterranean flair. Too full this time from a meal we'd eaten before coming across Zov's, but I look forward to coming back. We had dessert to go ~ the red velvet cheesecake (sweet & moist), chocolate toffee crunch cake (lighter than it looks, not too sweet, heaven), and the fruit tart (my favorite). 2.5 stars actually I tried the red velvet cupcake and their chocolate bomb. The red velvet was good, but not great. The cake was really chocolaty and the frosting didn't really taste too much like cream cheese. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad cupcake. It just wasn't amazing. Walk in and you will see all the different types of desserts they offer. They have indoor and outdoor seating areas as well so take your pick! What we got: Individual Bread & Butter: each person gets there own small loaf of bread and butter. So cute! Bread was soft, but butter wasn't as soft as I would have liked it. Grilled Pork Chop ($21): it was a seasonal dish that came with like a hash brown cake, sauteed spinach, and caramelized pears? The pork chop was pretty dry...but everything else was pretty good! Hash brown cake thing was definitely the best thing of that dish. Chicken Kabob ($19): grilled chicken skewer, rice pilaf, and a tomato cucumber onion salad. Sister's dish and she said it was pretty good. Chicken was a little dry, but dip it in the tzatziki sauce and yum! Raspberry Lemon Cake ($8): not as good as I thought it would have been. Hard white chocolate cover around it, lemon mousse on top of a raspberry mousse, and stale rice krispies on the bottom. Took a couple bites and I was over it... Better with a side of herb sauce. Chocolate Bomb (4 stars): Pretty darn good. Really rich, so perfect to share. The creme brulee filling is towards the middle, I think the rest of the filling is a chocolate mousse. I have not been in any inside store/ restaurant/ meeting/ party since March 2020. I am in the mod-high risk group, so my precautions have been diligent and consistent. I researched Zov's before my visit with two friends. I have also had both vaccine shots. We ate in the dining room near the windows, which have upper ( celestory- type) windows that allow fresh air in and to circulate. I felt Zov's precautions were on the higher end of effectiveness and we were comfortable even on a cool evening. The service was impeccable, attentive and kind. I started with a sangria which was delightful. The food was excellent ( I had a vegetale/ rice bowl with a delicious piece of flavorful salmon). And we shared a luscious creme brulee for dessert - perfect. I will feel comfortable to return as long as they keep the capacity on the mid to lower end. To sum it up, by far the best bakery I've ever eaten at, and I've eaten at many. I spent time sampling various southern California bakeries and a few Nor-Cal ones; too many to yelp about seeing as how none have left a lasting impression except Zov's. Whether it's their delectable desserts like their German Chocolate Cake, which makes me wonder if Germany taking over the world was such a bad idea, or their Carrot Cake Cupcakes that cause a mouth watering sensation by simply glancing at them, Zov's bakery is well worth the expense. Reading through many of the subpar reviews on here, you'll notice the main complaint is cost. This cost is attributed to Zov's making all of their desserts and pastries from scratch. Many bakeries that claim to do the same have a dumpster full of premade mix boxes. It's both costly and time consuming to make everything from scratch, but the end result is a display case full of perfection. I can vouch for the following: Coconut Cupcakes, Lemon bars, Carrot Cake Cupcakes, German Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Bomb, Lemon Cheesecake, Magic Bars, Red Velvet Cake (Red Velvet Cheesecake was alright), pecan twists, Chocolate Box, and Toffee Crunch. Sticky buns were mediocre. The decorated cookies are decked out for each holiday season and are great gifts for kids, my nieces and nephews love them. Personally I have not tried the "Peanut Butter Nutter Butter Sandwich," as I'm not a huge fan of peanut butter, but my friend in Nor-Cal can't stop thinking about them and has asked me to bring some up next time I visit. In fact everyone I know that has tried Zov's desserts has become an instant fan. So if you want $1 cupcakes go to the Albertson's, get a box mix and live in your ignorant bliss, but if you want something that feels like an orgasmic explosion with every bite go to Zov's. I wanted to take my friends out to a bakery/cafe to hang out for a bit, and Zov's was suggested. Originally I was planning to go to the Irvine location, since I knew the Newport location had no bakery. Apparently, the Irvine location also does not, so we were directed to this Tustin location, the only one of the 3 Zov's locations to have a proper bakery display. Once we made our way across Southern California and found this location, we saw a nice display with delicious looking desserts. We settled on a Plum Almond Tart, Coconut Cheesecake with Passion Fruit Glaze, and the famous Chocolate Bomb with Creme Brulee Filling. We also ordered an Espresso, Cappuccino, and a Coffee. The desserts were excellent, with the Chocolate Bomb easy the favorite. The Coconut Cheesecake was also a great treat, with good texture and an fantastic glaze of Passion Fruit that completed the experience. The Plum Almond Tart was perhaps the weakest of the group, but it was by no means terrible...it was simply more tart than sweet. The drinks were also generally good, but not amazing...the Espresso was average, while the Coffee and Cappuccino were good. The meal was priced a little high, but the staff was at least courteous enough to not rush us after we had finished our meal so we could chat. In all, a generally good experience that we may check out again...going there for desserts is highly recommended. read more
