I may have had a bad night at this place, and usually I dont give a bad review until Ive tried it more than once. However theres no chance Ill ever return. To start the price was pretty expensive, but not ridiculous. I had the Cavatelli Bolognese. The pasta itself was OK but the bolognese...not so much. Within 5 mouthfuls I had 2 large chunks of 'something' in the meat. One of them was a big nasty vein, and that was it for me. The rest went in the trash. I got the white Pasta Fagiole for a soup, and that was close to inedible. It was obviously the hot water the pasta was cooked in, because it had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. This was a complete fail. I really wanted to like this place, as it came recommended to me, but its not meant to be. $30 later (Im not joking....for a small dish of pasta and a soup) I had to make a PBJ for dinner. read more

"A Rush of Italian Flavors" Chef John Rush did an outstanding job preparing our dinners Friday night. My wife and I went for dinner Friday night at Zuppa with our friend Yvonne. They have a nice dining room there, but we opted to sit at the bar because the atmosphere is more fun. Cory, the bartender, is excellent at keeping everything going smooth at the bar and they have a nice selection of local beers on tap. We started with our drinks while we decided on our meals for the night. Yvonne had a minestrone soup and the Seared John Dory. A pan seared white fish served over risotto and topped with a roasted yellow pepper coulis. Yvonne's meal was excellent. The pepper coulis really made the dish. My wife had a tossed salad with Zuppa's homemade blue cheese dressing. She enjoyed the dressing so much that she asked for more to finish her salad. Her dinner was the angel hair pasta with a bolognese sauce. Ground veal, pork, and beef in a marinara with a touch of cream. I tasted the bolognese and I thought it was very good. She liked it so much that it looked like she cleaned the bowl. I had the Shrimp & Roasted Corn Bisque. It had really good flavor. I also had the Spinach Fettuccine Mina. Shrimp, scallops, artichokes, roasted cherry tomatoes, spinach, olive oil and garlic over spinach fettuccine. The shrimp and scallops were cooked perfectly and the dish was delicious. I went to Zuppa's on Friday the 13th with my husband and parents. We were seated right away as we had a dinner reservation for 5:15. The woman on the phone had mentioned there would be a large party coming in around 5:30 see wanted to make sure we were there before they arrived as we were going to an event at the Palace. There is not a lot to choose from, the menu being one page. We started with the calamari which was lukewarm and average. My father and I had the chicken parm which was on the bland side and rubbery. My husband got the macaroni and cheese with shrimp and sundried tomatoes which was on the soupy side. My mother had a chicken dish with a brown sauce which was okay. We will not be returning. Amazing food is how to describe this new find ! We had the lobster bisque, a MUST try and the baked clams, wonderful. We eat out 4-5 days a week and travel near and far for new finds. I am a meatball freak so of course we ordered a side of meatballs. These meatballs are the best in the STATE of CT without a question. We had a pasta dish with fresh pasta, a light Alfredo sauce, peas and pancetta. Not a dish I would normally order but it was sooo good! My husband had the fish special which he just loved. It was Scallops, shrimp, swordfish and bucatini pasta in a sherry cream sauce. Others ordered the veal off the specials menu, baked stuffed shrimp, and chicken parm. They enjoyed their meals and I wished I ordered one of those. Mine was huge, presentation was lacking, overly sauced (as was the veal), and the scallops and shrimp didn't seem fresh. We keep making our way back here. First, I just came back in for a beer and appetizer (fried calamari) it was decent. Next I came back with the BF and I had the stuffed rigatoni, which was totally delicious! My bf wanted the shrimp mac and cheese, and it was no longer on the menu, but them made it for him anyway! I order the beer battered cajun chicken and it was like a rubber chicken. My husband ordered chicken parm with a side of what came to be rice-a-roni. The chicken parm wasn't even up to par. Im sorry but if you cant cook chicken up to any kind of standard then i don't want to try anything else. We will never go back! I ordered the tomato bisque and it was if I had asked someone with no cooking experience to cook it. What I was given was warm tomato sauce. It was like puréed tomatoes from a can, no cream or anything.. Gross. I don't usually return food but I had to so then I figured to try the lobster bisque, another mistake. Last night we dined here as a group of twelve. From start to finish, this establishment fell short of hitting the mark. The wine list and menu were limited. The service was VERY slow and inattentive. In her defense, we were a large group and fairly demanding, but 10-15 min to receive cocktails is unacceptable. As we sat and waited for drinks, and 45 minutes for our entrees, the staff congregated at the end of the bar in full view of our thirsty and hungry party which added to our frustration. We were turned onto this restaurant shortly after they opened - having lived in Italy, I had high expectations of what I was about to experience. While their menu is predominately Italian dishes, they also have some other classics, such as burgers, salads, and tacos - all of which I have yet to try. Depending on who is cooking that day, you could have different specials and different flavors, but time and time again I find myself really enjoying my meal. For those who haven't been tantalized by Italy itself, they seem to gobble the food up like there's nothing better in this world, so I would say that more than likely, 9 out of 10 people are going to LOVE this place. Is it straight out of Italy? No (but that gives me an excuse to go back to the Motherland!). Now, compared to all the other Italian restaurants that I have tried in CT, this one is the best I have found. Some traditional Italian-American fare for those who just must have calamari, chicken parm and pasta bolognese. Specials menu more interesting and changes frequently. Some interesting pairings- enjoyed the pan seared scallops with white beans and tomatoes. Food quality was good and portions were right size. Prices very reasonable Service was attentive but could be tweaked a bit and a bit more polished. Wine list is smaller with less well known labels but our selections were good. This is a brother -sister owned and operated place making it comfortable and inviting. Not high end Italian but a very nice modern Italian bistro. Definitely worth a visit for a relaxing meal and a nice glass of wine. All 5 of our group agreed that we would be returning for another meal. read more
