I saw Eire Trea (EEE-Ray Trey-YA) pop up on a discussion on Off The Grid's Facebook page and was very intrigued by their concept. Irish and Eritrean Fusion food. I don't even know what makes Eritrean food so seeing their menu for the first time actually confused me. I did understand the Irish angle with the Chips and Bangers and I'm guessing that the food on the Eritrean side is the Chicken Zig. I wanted to try something different so although their Niman Ranch Burger sounded tempting, I opted for their Chicken Curry Chips (http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=uc8pcG7wC4mE2lD2SnU_Ug&userid=F_5_UNX-wrAFCXuAkBZRDw). You can get a small order for $5 or a large size for $7 which is what you see in the photo. This smelled really good! And the taste really surprised me. In a way, if you know your Filipino Cuisine, it kind of tastes like Chicken Afritada on top of a bed of Fries. So this was actually quite comforting. Hmm, I'm going to have to make this at home. Haha. I would definitely order this again on a cold day to warm myself up to.. Sure, we're only across Market street from our old building, but the FiDi is another world from SOMA, so there's a slew of new restaurants and food trucks to explore. I checked out Éire Trea and was impressed. The truck features a seemingly bizarre fusion of Irish and Eritrean foods, but it was really good! Apparently one owner is Irish, the other Eritrean and they got to talking. The rest is mobile history I ordered the daily special: Beef Alecha - tender beef with sweet potatoes & cabbage. You can order any dish as a wrap, but I got the version that comes with a salad and injera bread. Good salad, good injera! Irish and Ethiopian, WOW! I liked it even before I tried it since they are so unique but unfortunately, I did not enjoy the food as much as I had hoped. The outside of the burrito was very interesting as the outside was tortilla but also had injera which gave the wrap an sourish taste. This is actually an abomination to Eritrean food. I had to cater this to some people and never in my life have I ever been so humiliated to share my culture to people. I'm in shock that people enjoy this. The only thing it has in common with Eritrean food is the spices used. No Eritrean food has coconut, or even tofu. And yams in stew? Are you serious? Fusion dreams. One guy is from Ireland. Other is from Eritrea. Together they have created a food truck like no other. Dishes from both countries to tempt you including a few hybrids. Their enthusiasm describing dishes makes it harder to decide. Finally went Eritrean. Alecha was excellent. Mix of yams, cabbage, potatoes and other veggies on top of traditional injera bread. We had catering today at work from Eire Trea and I LOVED it! The accompanying sauces were amazing (especially the red sauce) and I snuck in a few french fries too. My main dish was the Alecha wrap - curried yams, sweet potatoes, cabbage, and more wrapped in both Enjera and a wheat tortilla. Not that impressed...the gf and I came here when they posted up at the SoMa StrEat Food Park and left disappointed. She went with the bangers and fries while I had the curry chicken and fries. Her b&f was actually undercooked in the middle and had a decent, somewhat subtle taste, but definitely not worth the $7 or so that was paid. My curry chicken and fries were decent, but nothing too special. It was cooked fine and the chicken chunks were tender, but again, nothing too special as far as taste goes. Further, it took them a good while without much of a line to produce 2 lackluster dishes for us. EireTrea has a cool idea, but just poorly executed. read more

And although this was the first experience I have ever had with Eritrean Food let alone Irish food, i was a bit skeptical. I had the Injera which, to me looked like chicken on a crape, but at first bite it was much more. A lot of the times, when I go to food trucks I'm often left kind of ashamed because I paid too much for what I just ate. Just because it comes out of a truck (and it's the trendy thing to do) doesn't mean I'm going to be happy paying a premium just to try your food. I can tell you that at my first visit to EireTrea, it was $7 well spent. I got a large Chicken Zig that came with spicy chicken stew and a fresh cabbage and sweet potato salad served atop some injera. It was a complete meal that didn't leave me feeling jipped. And it was delicious! It could've been more spicy for my personal tastes, but I thought the chicken was tender and it was very flavorful. The salad was great too, and I like the touch of crumbled feta on top. Can't wait to come back and try the curry fries! read more

I LOOOOOOVE this food truck. The Chicken dish with the enjera bread is so satisfying! RIch in flavors, this dish is the ultimate comfort food. I constantly crave this as well as the curry fries. I found that I like the flavors here more than any of the Ethiopian restaurants I've tried on Haight or the Mission or even East Bay. We sure have some spoiled taste buds in this town, so sometimes we need places like EireTrea to give our wee tongue buds unexpected flavor parties. Look no further than the fusion fiesta that is Ethiopian and Irish cuisine -- it's a unique savory gauntlet that makes you wish your stomach had greater capacity. The sour spongy enjera bread is something that grows on you, and eventually you can't get enough of it. The chicken zig and veggie alecha are great choices, and don't overlook the bangers and mash either. Everything is wonderfully spiced and packed with flavor, and it's all cooked to perfection. On top of all gastric goodness, I've brought them in for a couple office caterings and they're lovely to work with. The dishes are anything but skimped, fulfilling dietary restrictions is smooth sailing, and the owner is a real gem. I wish I saw them at more downtown OTG situations, but I hear that getting into things like 5th and Minna and Truckstop can be difficult. If you happen upon this truck, check it! read more

I found out about this awesomely unique truck through the StrEat Food park and Yelped them as I made my way down. First thing that caught my eye was the Chicken Curry Chops. I get to the park and there menu just kept tempting me with other options but I settled on the Curry Chips (as did my two friends). WOW! The picture was already tempting enough but once they hand it to me a few minutes later and the steamy aroma wafts into my nostrils, I was about to start drooling! We all loved it. It's definitely worth the money and I was so sad when I finished it all. Looking forward to trying something new next time.. though I may just get another order Curry Chips haha. read more

The $5 smaller version ($7 regular) was a fairly good meal for me as I have a small stomach with high metabolism. decent deal, and very tasty. Definitely worth a repeat visit when they are back in the neighborhood. They accept credit cards thru square now, and also accept LevelUp. Probably the dish that makes this place is the curry dish, the spicy aftermath leaves a trail of burn on your tongue. The fried chicken is good, nothing spectacular but I liked everything. The chicken is a bit dry but the breading is thin and crispy. The sauces are good but they only had a sauce, tomato, and lettuce? I forget but I felt the stuff beyond the chicken was very plain and most of the flavor came from the chicken. Might be your thing, might not. What I did like is they have a small portion for $5 or larger portion for $7. The small was a perfect lunch size for me. I enjoyed the salad that game with it, and the chicken came on a pancake type thing. That was definitely interesting. Maybe it would have tasted better with rice? I ordered the Chicken Zig from the truck around 12:45pm, later in the lunch rush cycle. The flavors first of all are pretty good. I would try it again. The main issue I have is that it appears that it was pre-made in the cardboard box before I ordered. Because of this the ethiopian "bread" was a soggy mush and everything merged with the salad, causing a mess of wilted leaves and making the salad unappetizing. I would try this again if it was made to order and the cold salad separated better from the hot dish. read more

The Veggie Delight wrap is a delightful mixture of yams, potatoes, veggies, and curry in a soft tortilla. YUM!! Hope to run across it again super soon! Went here with some co-workers for lunch last week and split the Chicken Zig and Curry Chips. +'s: unique flavors good change of pace for the food truck scene, the Eritrean bread the Chicken Zig came in was delicious and light, the chips were crunchy on the outside and soft and mealy on the inside. -'s: cash only (a little bit inconvenient since everyone now has square), the portions were pretty small, I thought the curry on the fries could have been a little thicker. My other co-workers got the Veggie Delight and Bangers and Chips and they both looked appetizing. Definitely worth a try! Delicious. I ordered the ziggy wrap, because I believe all cuisines taste that much better in burrito form. It contained their slow cooked chicken in tomato sauce with various veggies and spices, and interestingly, injera, inside the tortilla. There were more veggies than I expected, which led to a nicely balanced meal. Tasty, fresh, large, and filling, that's all I ask for from a food truck. Note: I expected there to be more hybrid items on the menu, as the name would suggest, but the Eritrean and Irish curry dishes are pretty distinct. Not a problem when both are well done. read more

Finally made it to SOMA Streats and found the EireTrea truck. Got the Chicken Zig "Doro Wat" ($8) which was an Ethiopian chicken stew wrapped in injera bread. This was pretty spicy so the simple salad side was a nice cooling factor. Pretty large portion and very much a comfort like food given it's stew consistency. Yuck. Just got back from EireTrea, and I have to say that you should avoid this place, as it appears they are having some QC issues. I walked less than a block back to my office, and bit into a Sweet and Spicy Wrap that was cold. Not even lukewarm - the thing was barely above refrigerator temperature. With all the much-better options around SOMA I'd definitely say that you should try someplace else. Original review of the old EireTrea follows... ____________________________________________________ Mother of mercy, this place is amazing. They are now coming every Tuesday and Thursday they can to their favorite location, which is happily a block away from work. This place is too good for words, but I will try to do it justice. I have been here three times, and gotten the curry fries, the ziggy wrap, and a special called (I think) the sweet and sour wrap. Each time I have been dumbfounded by the quality of the ingredients, the size of the portions, and the overall balance of the dishes. The fries are purposely soggy, because they're covered with this delicious curry sauce. I have no idea how curry moved from India to Ireland, but the Irish are doing something right. It is a more complex, slightly sweeter flavor than a traditional Indian curry, and it goes with the fries wonderfully. The two wraps were divine. Unlike the many food truck competitors, the wraps here have a perfect combination of vegetables and meats. The vegetables stand out even more than the chicken. The chicken, while great, is not what makes these dishes. Rather, the amazingly complex flavors of the veggis (and fruits? Was that yam I detected?) sort of do a dance in a circle around the chicken, who's basically just chilling in the middle doing his own thing. TOTALLY OK WITH THAT. Also, unlike every other food truck out there, the food from this place is not greasy or fatty. Alright, maybe the fries are, but fries are meant to be. The wraps are lean - you don't even have to wash your hands afterwards, they're so un-greasy. One last thing - the portions are HUMONGOID. Normally, you go to a food truck, and you pay a food truck premium. You get food that isn't quite enough for what you paid. NOT SO with EireTrea. I get a wrap, and it's the only meal I eat that day. So yeah, one-meal Tuesdays and Thursdays will now be a tradition for me, and I couldn't be happier. read more

First of all, big props for having the most eclectic mix of cuisine I've ever come across (Irish and Eritrean). That unique combo basically made my decision quite easy as to which food truck to try. I had the Ziggy Wrap, which was basically a burrito wrap layered with injera bread and filled with curry chicken, potatoes and spices. Really good. I will say it tasted neither Irish nor Eritrean (except for the spongy texture of the injera) but rather more like an Indian curry type burrito (a la Curry Up Now). For $8, I got an extremely generous portion, easily double of what other curry type food trucks give you. The dish is kind of like a chicken curry, on top of sour Eritrean bread, plus a little green salad on the side. Very filling and super flavourful. I'm traveling through 17 states and 1 Canadian province with my children over the 11 weeks of summer, and we're spending 4 weeks in the Bay Area. Happened by StrEat Food Park in SoMa on Sunday and ate at EireTrea. I like the concept and certainly the fusion of Irish (Galway, Ireland chef) and Eirtrea (chef from the Horn of Africa) is unique and worth a trip. I ordered Irish Curry and Chips, and found the chicken to be underseasoned and overcooked. The flavors of the curry were pretty nice, though the presentation was not neat. I know, it's curry and chips, what do I expect? Overall, though, I think these guys are onto something and with some more work, this will become an outstanding food truck and maybe even a restaurant at some point. read more

Well I had to update my review because the owner contacted me and updated me on what went awry the day I got raw chicken---apparently there was a mix-up with the pot of meats--and they ended up serving the raw pot. First I would like to say that I appreciate when someone takes RESPONSIBILITY and APOLOGIZES! I mean this really makes a difference. Fabulous hot Chai tea !!! This is for review of the food truck that was parked at SoMa StrEat Food Park. We arrived and walked around not too hungry but made our way through the many trucks and first time around and I see this place with a sign for hot chai tea!! Oh yeah. Even though I never buy anything the first go round I stopped and got a chai since it was cold outside and the man was very nice and it was well worth it. The chai was fresh and homemade and had some really nice flavors. I enjoyed it as we walked around two more times before we finally decided on what to eat that evening but this Chai was by far the best around and the only time I have seen some on a food truck! Kudos you guys I will be looking for you around town when I am down here and hope to see you at lunch or dinner again at the park so I can try some food too. The guys in this truck has such great attitudes and energy...they must be drinking the chai too! Unlike some of the other trucks who just were going through the motions and not smiling. While the merger of Irish & Eritrean cuisine may sound odd on paper, it is pure genius in its actual manifestation. It all seems to work: friendly service from the Irish & Eritrean proprietors (check!); perfect name for the concept (check!); great tasting original food in bountiful portions at a cheap price from a food truck (check!). Back a few feet away from the truck & you've conveniently stumbled into Danny Coyle's pub on a Sunday afternoon. Here you can enjoy your nice-price grub with a cold beverage while sitting at the wide open store-front windows on a warm day. Oh yeah...the corned beef wrap is outrageously good. This may seem an odd combination, and it is, especially since its East African food being prepared by pasty white young irish kids inside the truck, but its actually quite tasty.
