    Beef deluxe

Found this place on Yelp as it was close to our show venue. The entrance area is sooo dark, kinda scary. It's hard to tell if it was open or not. I wish it had been a bit more inviting. And there is also...an unsettling smell? I ordered the beef deluxe and I thought it was really good. The portion sizes were a bit smaller, but I'd recommend my dish! The place was very empty and only one other couple ate there with us. I don't know if I would go back?

Overall 3.5/5 Decent new pho place - they would've gotten a much higher rating if the meat wasn't so rough like cardboard The soup base was strong enough and pretty good so only complaint is really the meat and portion size is rather small We got the pho special and bun Bo hue for reference

We stopped here for lunch because it was convenient, but wow I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food here. We were the only customers at first, so ours came out super hot and fresh, it felt like we were the first plate served of the day. We got the chow mein (no meat) and it was really flavorful, and the lunch special of I think sesame chicken with rice. The lunch comes with a bowl of soup and a gyoza/potsticker, which was fried but not greasy and had a strong ginger flavor. Me and my kids really loved all of it. The service is nothing to be excited about, our waiter barely spoke to us, even as he seated us- but he was fast and very accurate. Can't complain, it was a great stop for lunch and I'd love to come back for more.

    Egg Rolls! Very good

Yummy Vietnamese restaurant right in the heart of downtown Norfolk. Had seen the good reviews and was craving some delicious Asian inspired food and this place did not disappoint. Arrived right at 5pm on Friday to be able to eat before a show at the Norva which is right down the street so a perfect place to eat dinner before a show. Seated promptly in a nice comfortable booth. For food I order the chicken chow foon and added carrots. My husband ordered the General Tsao's and we got the egg rolls to start. Egg rolls came out piping hot and had a great flavor and dipping sauce. I really liked the chow foon. My husband liked his general's chicken and it had a nice little kick. Both of our dishes were generously sized with enough for leftovers. Service was fast and friendly. Food

My fiancé and I came here the day after their grand opening because it is literally 3 minutes away from us, and we wanted to try their dishes. Inside the restaurant, it is very clean and has great modern vibes. They have touch tunes, so you can go up and pick out any song you want. It is also very spacious. There is a separate bar on one side. I haven't seen it running yet, but it looks very nice. The waiter was super sweet and nice. He made sure we had everything we wanted/needed. The service was as great as the food. The menu is MASSIVE. They have a different versions of one dish. For example, there are several Banh Mi's, bowls of pho, vermicelli bowls, and Chinese dish entrees that you can choose from. To start off with the drinks, Thai tea was very delicious, refreshing and HUGE portion. The Vietnamese Ice Coffee was very good (as it is made with condensed milk), but it takes like a good 20min to steep it, so if you have the patience, it is worth it. It doesn't say how much on the menu, but the lunch special is $15 (choose an entree, choose either chow mein or fried rice, choose a potsticker or crab rangoon, and get soup of the day). Some people would think it is a little more expensive than other places, but they give a huge amount of food. The hot and sour soup was very tasty. It comes very close to the one I like back home. I didn't try my fiancé's fried rice, but the garlic chicken is totally worth getting! The spring rolls don't contain a lot of ingredients, just noodles and lettuce and choice of protein. The peanut sauce was very well made, and the size of the spring rolls is huge. The halves are a size of a regular sized spring roll in other restaurants. The pho was very good, the broth was deep and there was A LOT of protein inside. It might just be the special pho, but I was full from the amount of protein inside the bowl. I didn't really like that the noodles were a bit short, but overall, it was a pretty good bowl of pho. Parking is a little difficult to find here because there is no street parking, so I recommend parking at the corner of the McArthur Center Parking lot, and then it's only a 3 minute walk from there. I definitely want to come back and try every other thing on the menu at least once.

Ordered takeout pho from them a few months back and it was pretty good, so I came by again after work to try some of their other food. Parking was a hassle as there was no lot nearby and only small street parking spaces. The restaurant was empty except for one other table on a Tuesday evening. I was seated after a few minutes (they didn't notice me waiting at the door). Facilities seem clean and new and a good location right in downtown. Food was subpar and expensive. I forgot to take a pic but for $7.99, the 2 egg rolls were small with absolutely no garnishes or a bed of lettuce to wrap in. They looked store bought and not home (or restaurant) made as how many other Vietnamese restaurants would have. Pork chops were also a let down. For $15.99, relatively small portion size and the meat was tough and salty. Veggies were haphazardly cut and the do chua (pickled carrot and radish) was slightly thick for my taste and sweet but not pickled quite enough. Probably will not visit again as the food seems not worth its high price point.

Just what Norfolk's been needing! We ordered to-go; I got the beef pho and honey chicken. The pho was the best I've had - generously portioned, lean beef, and tons of flavor. The honey chicken was crispy, sweet, and spicy - served with rice and huge portions. The menu is the perfect blend of pan-Asian and Vietnamese, and prices exceptionally reasonable for quality. Would 100% return and recommend.

Dong Tay opened in February of this year, taking over the spot previously occupied by Southern Eats in downtown Norfolk. Parking is available close by from the City of Norfolk parking garage on Charlotte Street. I prefer the MacArthur Center garage a little further away. There is some metered street parking directly across the restaurant. The interior is spacious and attractively decorated. As of this writing, the bar area was a work in progress with no drinks yet being served. Their menu features a small number of Vietnamese dishes and a much larger number of Chinese dishes. Their Chinese fare is mostly American style, which was a disappointment. I wanted to see more of my authentic Sichuan favorites. The Appetizers section of their menu has a listing for Pot Stickers, which are fried dumplings, but none for the steamed dumplings I prefer. Xian-Long-Bao soup dumplings are not available. Seven different Tofu dishes are also listed on their menu. My favorite, which is Mapo Tofu, is not included. I have tried the following to date: PHO GA: Authentic Vietnamese Chicken Noodle Soup with Rice or Egg Noodles, topped with Scallions, Cilantro, Chives, and Fried Shallots. Served with Fresh Bean Sprouts, Basil, Lime, and Jalapenos on the side. I chose the Rice Noodles. Their version rivaled the one served at my favorite local Pho spot. Slices of tender white chicken meat and a solid broth provided a pleasurable taste experience. The other ingredients played well together, and I added some chili oil for extra spice. My Rating: 5 Stars. BUN BO HUE: Traditional Spicy Lemongrass Soup with Thick Rice Vermicelli Noodles, Filet Mignon, Chu Lua, Brisket, and Tendon. Topped with White Onion, Scallion, and Cilantro. The meats and other ingredients delivered a decent broth with their flavors coming through nicely enough. I would have liked the broth even more with a traditional reddish tone and spicier kick. The best Bun Bo Hue I have enjoyed locally came served with pork blood cubes, banana blossoms, shredded red cabbage, and fresh chili peppers. I would love to see these ingredients added to the version here. My Rating: 4 Stars. PAD THAI: Rice Noodles with Dried Shrimp, Egg, Bean Sprouts, and Scallions. Served with Fresh Bean Sprouts, Lime, and Peanuts on the side. I chose Chicken and Shrimp as my proteins. The type of sauce was not listed. When I asked what was in the sauce, they told me it was a "secret." I believe I detected the taste of a traditional Tamarind based sauce with no tomato products, which I found satisfactory. The shrimp were pleasant, but I prefer them with their tails on. The chicken slices were a bit tough and dry. The bean sprouts added to my plate were ice cold and clashed with the warmth of the dish. The side order of peanuts was missing. My Rating: 3 Stars. KUNG PAO CHICKEN: Bell Peppers, Zucchini, Baby Corn, Bamboo Shoots, Celery, White Onion, Carrots, and Roasted Peanuts. This dish originated from the Sichuan province of China during the early 1800s. The overload of veggies revealed an Americanized version not used in the traditional Sichuan formula for this dish. They dominated its entire composition with an overly clumpy texture.. Scallions, Sichuan dried chilies, and Sichuan peppercorns are essential ingredients for an authentic version. They were all missing in action. There was no trace of the hot, numbing, and tingly Mala sensations that Sichuan peppercorns provide. Finally, the slices of chicken were extremely tough and dry, which was the decisive factor in my rating. My Rating: 2 Stars. CHOW FUN WITH FILET MIGNON: Wide Rice Noodles with Filet Mignon, Bean Sprouts, and Onions. This is an authentic Cantonese dish with the wide rice noodles originating from the Guang Zhou province. The noodles delivered a silky smooth taste and texture, and the Filet Mignon was tender and tasty. I detected a slight aftertaste of soy sauce as I was leaving. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. SPRING ROLLS: Rice Paper wrapped with Fresh Vermicelli, Lettuce, and Cilantro. Served with Peanut Sauce on the side. My choice of protein was Shrimp. The spring rolls delivered a nice taste and texture, and I could tell they were freshly made. I like them just a little more plump and tender. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. TARO BUBBLE TEA: The taro flavor came through nicely, but they forgot the ice. The mixture became thick and gummy at the bottom, and I had to scoop out the remaining boba with a spoon. My Rating: 3 Stars. THAI TEA: Having now ordered it twice, it was served the first time with no ice. It did come with ice the second time, topped with whipped cream, which was a nice touch. Its flavor was solid. My Rating: 4 Stars. Service has been polite, friendly, and attentive. I have no complaints. When I crunched the food numbers, their rating came out to 3.75 stars, which was just enough to round up to a weak 4-star rating. Hopefully they will improve over time, and I wish them the best of success.

Honestly one of the tastiest bowls of pho I've had in a long time. The service was quick, attentive and very friendly. Before I knew it, I was face to face with an incredibly savory and light broth, the perfect portion of noodles, rare steak and fresh veggies. Definitely will be back to try out the other dishes!

Grilled beef with eggroll Vermicelli. The serving is huge and the beef is flavorful. A thumbs up!

It was my first time here for dinner on a Sunday night. I give it 4 stars out of 5 because service needs much improvement. The host brought my party of 5 to our table and just placed the three menu on the table and walked away. My friend had to retrieve 2 more. The menu is extensive with Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. Ten minutes had passed and no one came to our table. We had to flag down a server to place our order, drinks, appetizers and main course. It did not take long for our appetizers and main dishes to arrive. The restaurant is nicely decorated with a huge bar on one side. I do hope there will be improvements with the service and adequate servers are present during peak business hours. The food was good and I would return to try other items.

Solid beef pho with the best hot chili oil I've had, pricey though at $23. Can't understand why it was so dark in there though.

Clearly this restaurant offers more Chinese dishes than Vietnamese! I was hoping they have the staple Vietnamese dishes like Bun Bo Hue, Banh Xeo aside from typical Pho soups. Even their rice dishes aren't like the pork chop and egg/clear noodle side. Now if the iced coffee is drip then they're hybrid lol. You see a lot of Chinese dishes like Kung pao chicken, chow mein, and some very Americanized fudges like pineapple rice! Even the decor is more Chinese like the red lanterns- although you do see the Vietnamese conical hats hanging from the ceiling. Very large spacious dining areas, clean floors inside except gif the entryway where they could a little bit upkeep. Service is okay. They just check in on you when they happen to pass by your table. I'd say service is 3. But back to the food - I ordered the special pho. Typical great taste although the vegetables they give isn't enough, wish there was more been sprouts and fresh mint leaves! The iced coffee - definitely on point Vietnamese coffee. Btw street parking is nonexistent so Park at the Charlotte Street garage. Overall I'd give a solid 4 just because Vietnamese dish offering is very limited. But I suppose they need to cater to other Asian tastes.

We were in the area for a show at The Scope and wanted to eat beforehand. I don't know why I've never seen filet mignon fried rice on a menu before, it was amazing! It was a bit spicier than I thought it would be, so it's a good thing I got the mango bubble tea! My husband loved his pho & said the broth was great. We will definitely be coming back.

I've only been to the Chesapeake location, and I love their food, so this was my first time trying the food at the VB location. I was quickly greeted as soon as I walked in and was seated right away. I loved the clean and modern decor of the restaurant. My server was super friendly and brought over the menu. I knew I wanted the Wonton in Hot Chili Oil but I also wanted to try the Dan-Dan Noodles here, because I wasn't a fan of them at the other location, so I ordered both of those along with Salt & Peppered Prawns. The food was served fairly quickly. I started with the Wontons but there was something in the chili oil that made my mouth extremely tingly and numb. I normally get a slight tingly feeling when I eat them but this was intense. I couldn't even finish it. The Dan-Dan Noodles were incredible though! They had the perfect amount of flavor and spice. The Salt & Peppered Prawns were good, but I probably won't order them again. The flavors were great but the seasoning is only on the shells. I found myself rubbing the de-shelled shrimp on the seasoned shells to give them some flavor. I did attempt to eat them with the shells on but I wasn't a fan. You really can't go wrong at Judy's! The staff were incredible and the food is good!!! I still prefer the Chesapeake location but I'm glad I was able to stop in and try the food out at this location as well.

It is one of those things where one place might have great fried rice, one has great egg rolls, and another has great lo mein. Overall the food was good as I went with the General Tsos combo that comes with regular fried rice but for a small upcharge if you want to change the rice to pork or shrimp. To me it is still unusual as I thought ham fried rice was just a normal thing that comes with a dinner combo along with an egg roll. Not anymore. I ordered an eggroll (2 per order) to go with the meal along with a teriyaki stick. The teriyaki stick (you get 2 per order) was pretty good and not dried out to the point where it could pass for jerky. The chicken in the dinner was good and not overly breaded. It was supposedly spicy but trust me anyone could handle this spice. Good spot to quench your hankering for some American Chinese food. Parking can be a bit iffy with a few spaces in the front on the street shared with other restaurants but the same holds true for the spaces behind the building.
