I was staying with some friends in Eastlake and this was a quick walk up the hill. I must say that I was glad that I did. First off this is not a place that is going to set trends in food. This place is where a lumberjack would get a hearty meal and a bold cup of coffee. It has a "Flo's Diner" feel but on the funky side. In fact I think the older lady that greeted me was Flo. I had the bacon and cheddar scramble. It came with a very nice crispy hash-brown and a good helping of eggs. I thought the service was good not great, but it didn't need to be. I appreciate that the waitress brought every possible breakfast condiment, without me asking, that I could need. Ketchup, 2 kinds of hot sauce, and strawberry jam (not tiny little plastic tubs). This was the hearty breakfast that I needed to fuel my walk of Seattle. This walk took me all the way to Quest Field and back across to Fremont to Archie McPhee's. Don't go to 14 Carrot if you can't be honest with yourself, and admit that some times you enjoy mac and cheese out of the box. If your food here is bland, then pick up the salt off the table. It's ok here, this is not a pretentious place the line cook won't be offended. ;) This is not a blue chip dining experience, but it is a blue collar one, and that's A-Ok with me. read more

I love breakfast. I'm not sure why there isn't more universal acclaim for the 14 Carrot. Maybe I get a different experience because I'm a late riser and roll in around 11am. But the people are nice, the food is great and the ambiance fun. I usually order the Sweet Tooth breakfast featuring the cinnamon roll, with a waffle on the side (yes I'm a pig -- oink!). My wife gets the croissant sandwich, which has eggs, bacon and cheese in it, or sometimes she gets the granola which she likes. Call me crazy, maybe it's because I'm from the Eastside and there aren't that many great places for breakfast out here. But I've been going to the 14 Carrot for years and will gladly continue to do so! ps- I like fake maple syrup better than the real stuff. My wife doesn't. There you go, to each their own! read more

But really, I had breakfast with my favorite brunch buddy this past Saturday at the 14 Carrots Cafe in Eastlake and enjoyed the entire experience. Well, I didn't appreciate whomever used the women's restroom before me - Thanks for peeing on the seat lady! In an effort to unearth my beach body for my upcoming trip to Australia I'm on a diet of beans, veggies, and protein (meat). So going into brunch I was curious as to what I'd be able to eat that would get me all of the above without having to be "that person" who asks for a million substitutions. Enter the heuvos rancheros! 14 Carrot's classic heuvos rancheros starts with a crisp flour tortilla which is layered with tender black beans, onions, cheese, and two luxuriously fried eggs; accompanied by hash browns, fresh salsa, and a side of sour cream. In order to adhere to my absurd diet, I ate all the black beans, eggs, salsa, and a minimal amount of the hash browns and tortilla. Everything was delicious! My friend had two pancakes, which were made with cottage cheese, covered in warm syrup. You can't go wrong with carbs, saturated fat, and high fructose corn syrup in the morning. Another thing I really liked about 14 Carrots are their mimosas and coffee cart. First the coffee. Like a conjoined fetus, there's a small coffee cart attached to the front of the small cafe that sticks out onto the sidewalk, where passerby can buy a morning joe, and where they make their specialty beverages for the diners. Second, the mimosas! I had three. What!? It's brunch, and I didn't stuff myself with food, and, well, shut it! I digress. These mimosas are actually strong - 'nough said. Drinks never reach the bottom of the glass, servers are on their game and plates have always been consistent to my palate's recollection. All in all, 14 Carrot is a prime example of why I love living in Eastlake - a diamond in the rough. Greeted with a, "Hi Sweetie!" as if part of the family - it's an awesome, neighborhood breakfast diner with a variety of dishes at typical prices - lots of omelets and scrambles - the Tuscan is ah-mazing! I enjoy coming in to see the local art that filters through and the espresso bar out front attracts a constant crowd for people watching. Terry, the owner, is generally the hostess, while keeping a close eye on the entire restaurant to give the servers a hand when needed. Favorite place in the whole world. The owners are absolutely amazing, the food is top notch, and the atmosphere feels like home. This place is a small town brunch/diner feel in a big city. Lots of locals and wonderful staff who know you by name (once you come here enough :) The buttermilk pancakes are to die for and the cinnamon rolls are fabulous. Slow service and sub-par eats. Normally I would think that breakfast is a bullet-proof staple that anyone can get right. Here they seem to go out of their way not to do so. Fake syrup, fake butter, and out-of-a-box meals. My eggs tasted like they came out of a carton, the cheese wasn't melted, and considering everything is $10+ a plate, rather small. Service was slow and forgetful, but the best is yet to come. They actually have a sign posted that asks you to think of the people waiting and GTFO. So I should hurry up and rush my breakfast because there might be someone waiting? Are you fucking serious? Go somewhere else for breakfast. This place isn't worthy. read more

I love the vibe here. Our parents took us to brunch here two weekends ago and we had such a great time. Our server had the best attitude and I spent the entire meal smiling and enjoying great food with family. I ordered the Eastlake special, which was two whole wheat banana pancakes with a side of scrambled eggs with cheese and a little cup of greek yogurt. I haven't had such great pancakes in a LONG time. They were big, but not super thick and just completely moist and delicious! I ate both of them :) My handsome fiance and dad ordered some spicy omelette with chorizo and all kinds of yummy stuff and it was super tasty. Soon to be MIL ordered eggs benedict and said the eggs have never been more perfectly poached. That is a compliment in my book! Before we left, my dad, on a mission to stuff me with as much food as humanly possible, ordered a cinnamon roll and coffee cake to go. OMG this cinnamon roll is to die for. Met some fellow crew mates here for a brunch on Saturday afternoon, we were seated right away with our group of friends. Coffee and water soon followed the waitress! Service was fast and very courteous! I live very close to this spot so it was a nice and convenient walk. I got the simple bacon and eggs breakfast. There were a few moments of... wanting to drain my plate from grease and dab my bacon, but I refrained to maintain friendships. There are so many things wrong with this place but so many things right with it that you have to go ahead and give it a middle-of-the-road review. So it's Memorial Day weekend in Seattle and everyone is throwing a party... it's my duty to attend said parties and therein accept the consequences of them on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. when your already-recovered friends, who apparently didn't understand that Memorial Day weekend is the time to memorialize your veterans/serving forces by announcing your patriotism with red + blue jello shots, wake you up and tell you to get dressed (oh, but I'm still wearing last night's clothes anyway) and take a walk down to Carrot Cafe. So as you may have gathered, I'm basically teetering on the edge of my life in hangoverland, but delightfully enough the walk was about 1 minute long. That's the cool thing about Seattle. But unfortunately the wait is about 15 minutes long. Being a patron of many brunch spots in Los Angeles, 15 minutes really isn't a big deal. So we sit outside, in the beautiful temperate setting that is an abnormally warm Seattle weekend, and wait. We also had run into some of my friend's old colleagues so it was pleasant. We get called in and seated at a table that's a little bit too large for 3 people. Who cares. They do have an enormous selection of breakfast items, but since I simply needed carbohydrates/bread-like material to soak up the leftover evil in my stomach, I went with sourdough pancakes. I thought, "I love sourdough bread, and I love pancakes. This should be amazing." So I'm sitting there staring off into space, looking much like death, when the hostess/lady who runs the place came over to me and put her arm around my shoulders. "Honey, are you really hungry?" "Oh... um, I'm...just really hung-over," I said. At this admission, the mid-50's lady starts CRACKING up! "Oh, honey, I so know how you feel! Let me bring you some toast and some water." So although the waiter had not brought us water nor food for a little longer than one would expect, we did have a bunch of toast to nosh on. That was nice. When my sourdough pancakes did finally come (and after the waitress had completely gotten my friend's order wrong) I was pretty excited. But they were terrible. GAH! They were EXTREMELY sour, more sour than that sourdough bread stuff you get at Ethiopian restaurants, and reeeeeeaaaally dry. So I just slathered it in this jam that was on the table (which I later accidentally stuck the spoon for into my syrup... so not my day). So I literally only ate about 3/4 of one pancake and stole some of my friend's hashbrowns. So, overall, the wait and price did not match the quality of food and service. My 2 pancakes were $5.50. They came with one pat of butter and syrup... haha and some friendly mom-like service and sympathy. read more

One of the few places I'll go to without showering (don't worry, I usually do). It's not fancy, but it's decent breakfast food. If you are hungover, you'll love it more. The food is simple. But, we always leave full and happy, and it's fairly laid back which is great for a sunday morning. It's a good come in, eat, get out place... but I find that OK. If you want a place to linger and gab a about how "you'll never drink that much again" from the previous night, I'd go somewhere else (perhaps AA?). Service is to the point... they get you in and out. If you have people in from out of town, I'd probably take them somewhere nicer. There are better places out there, but you'll get a good simple meal. read more

I ordered the French toast with a side of chicken apple sausage and my friend got the normal breakfast with eggs, toast and bacon. I have never had French toast with less flavor and the sausage was dry. The bacon was extremely overcooked as well. On average it's around $15 a dish, very over priced for breakfast. I came here on a Thursday for brunch/lunch after spending the morning working at Voxx cafe next door. I chose to go for the huevos rancheros which were consisted of two fried eggs on corn tortillas with ranchero sauce and black beans. Their ranchero sauce was subtle in flavor but the with all the other elements made the overall dish good. It was served with hashbrowns which were practically pan-fried julienned potatoes, but hey, anything fried is yummy! Speaking of which, their corn tortillas were deep fried which was nice because I don't like the awkward texture of corn tortillas that kind of crumble in your mouth. Usually I prefer refried beans when eating Mexican food but for something meant to be possibly eaten in the morning, the black beans were not too heavy while not being watery and gross. The menu is very extensive and I will definitely have to come back to give a full report of the food. I am looking forward to trying their french toast and other omelettes (a greek one with feta was my other option). Part of the reason I enjoyed coming here was the outdoor seating and the fact that I could sit and work while I waited for my food since they had free wireless. The service was also very friendly and neighborhoody (if that were a word). read more

I have to agree more with the poor reviews than the good ones. I went there on Mothers Day and it was a subpar experience. The waitress we had was friendly enough but too hippy-dippy to get our orders together. I found the quality of the food not nearly what I had been let to believe, the portions were on the small side and we had to wait an inordinate amount of time for a table for two. I know the place is popular (Why I don't know. Hype?) and I certainly had the obligatory "Sunday brunch" wait time budgeted in, but even by those standards, we waited a long time. This is a breakfast place, so you know what to expect: gets busy at mid-morning on the weekends, serves pretty basic fare (you know: eggs, toast, pancakes, etc.). The pancakes are such a guilty indulgence. Try the cottage cheese ones. Trust me. But it's one of our favorite places in town. The tables in the windows are sunny (well, when the sun is out), Terry is so fun, the coffee is good and they will go out of their way to make you happy. We went here today for the first time. I'd never heard of it - but a friend had been years ago and said it was good. Since it was a Tuesday at about 11 a.m. - it was pretty dead which was nice for us. We could sit anywhere. I liked the decor and atmosphere. Looking at the menu, it's definitely pricier than most breakfast places. The service was quite good though. I had the breakfast quesadilla with avocado and bacon. OHMYGOSH - that is DELICIOUS! I am going to CRAVE that now! The bacon was super crispy - just perfect - and there was a lot of avocado which was really fresh and just perfect. I got a side of bacon and it was cooked perfectly and thick cut and terrific! My son had pancakes which he liked very much. The only problem was the hash browns. Just nothing special there. I didn't even eat them - and hashbrowns are usually my favorite! But, they were unseasoned and just MEH - they paled in comparison to the quesadilla!! (of Boston) has a distinct dislike for the Greeks (he claims to have been the subject of an assassination attempt in Athens in the fall of 2000), I find this prejudice unjustified, this supposed assassination attempt unsupported, and hold up the 14 Carrot Cafe as proof of the Greeks' worth - with omelets this good the Hellenic Republic cannot be all bad. We had brunch with some friends, when the Portage Bay Cafe was crawling with hungry-looking people waiting outside. We asked if they were all waiting, and the looks on their faces said it all. Yes, we're waiting, f--k off you are annoying us even more! :) Fair enough... Our friends suggested 14 Carrot, which was nearby. It was crowded but we were seated immediately. We had a table next to the windows, and it was really hot that morning. There was a sad, standing fan on a countertop, at the other end of the room. There were a lot of people in there, hot weather, joke of a fan... I wasn't uncomfortable but a little AC would have been GREAT. I tried the chorizo omelette. It was an enormous pile with buttered toast and hash browns. And, my favorite jam in the world: FREEZER JAM! YES! The omelette was good--black beans, pico de gallo, sour cream, enveloped in fluffy egg. The chorizo, however...not good. It had the consistency of what I envision scrapple to be. Close to ground beef but....not. A little tough, a little questionable, and definitely not what I look for in chorizo. The coffee was surprisingly good--smooth. The service was decent but not great. The carrot cafe seems a little inconsistent to me. Sometimes it's great (especially since it's convenient for me) but sometimes it's been rather disappointing. I've had corned beef hash multiple times here and about half of the time it's amazing, and half of the time it's a little nasty. Not sure if it depends on the cook or what. Last omelet I had was pretty good. I like the neighborhood feel and decor. The staff is pretty nice although sometimes not very attentive if busy. If I didn't live in the neighborhood then I probably wouldn't go back because it's hit or miss. read more

This is one of my very favorite brunch places in Seattle. There isn't normally much of a wait and more often than not you'll be seated immediately. The waitstaff are friendly and helpful-- I've never had any reason to complain. I think the trick is to always order a special; their specials are consistently amazing and there's a huge variety. The cinnamon rolls are very popular but I've had everything from the Southwest scramble to the eggs Benedict to the brioche French toast and I've never left unhappy. If you're not in the mood to wait for 45 minutes to be seated at Portage Bay and want consistently excellent food and service, I highly recommend 14 Carrot Cafe. read more

When I got there before another couple they sat them first even though our group had got there before them and then said it would be another 10 minute wait. Okay, I'm thankful to say now that I've had a really great experience at 14 Carrot! I went there for a late breakfast on Easter Sunday expecting it to be busy and bitchier than usual, but instead I was greeted by the very sweet owner, Terry, who because she noticed my somewhat forlorn and exhausted expression, proceeded to give me a hug and call me sweetheart! The waitress (her daughter, I discovered) was so much nicer than I had previously estimated; her smile sparkling in the sun that shone through the windows ; ) We both ordered the Sweet Tooth, which comes with 3 eggs (!!) - which were soft and yummy- hashbrowns and a home made cinnamon roll for $7.50, which is quite a deal, I must say! I'm calling it my new Rusty Pelican. What I love is I can breakfast or lunch and there are like a million bajillion choices!! I'm a lot of talk sometimes "I want breakfast, I can't wait for pancakes, I want hashbrowns!" Then when we sit down with the menu, I'm like "oh a chicken gyro sounds awesome" So I like the variety. It's always lively and a really up beat atmosphere. The art they have now is all about these crazy cat ladies and it's awesome! I wish I could buy one, they are so funny!
