This is a wonderful restaurant. We sat at a high top which had a nice bench on one side. That side of the restaurant seems more relaxed and is quite beautiful. Noise level was less on that side as well. The wine list is quite remarkable - not like most Montana lists which tend to be pretty cookiecutter. This is extremely well thought out with a particularly good by-the-glass selection. Renee, the GM, is host and responsible for the list. She's knowledgeable and enthusiastic - not sure if she holds a Somm designation but it doesn't much matter as she's really good. Service was good, the steaks and crab cakes were excellent. I had French onion soup that was weird - not bad, not good, but definitely weird. I wouldn't have that again, but I don't hold it against them. Just not to my taste. We need to go here more often. My husband and I were looking forward to dining here, and decided to make a date to celebrate selling our home and landing a huge new job. We arrive and the host wasn't the friendliest or most mindful, didn't bring a kids menu for our 2 year old and gave us a booster seat instead of a high chair. Our server came a few minutes later and helped us out with the high chair. The rest of the night went ok. The food was really good. We had: -The butter flight -Bone Marrow Brûlée -Shrimp and Grits -Filet mignon with seared Scallop -Chicken fingers from kids menu I also ordered a cocktail from the bar, a popular French cocktail that I asked if the server could request the bartender to make. The reason for the low rating is the +++ charges this restaurant does not bother to tell you about. Our server told us vegetables came with my TWO year olds chicken fingers that were $15, but we were charged $3 extra for asparagus spears. Who serves that to kids and charges $18 for a kids meal??? The scallop is an a accompaniment to any entree at $8 each. Your steak comes with 1 sauce, but you will be charged $8 if you want to try all 4. And adding crème de menthe to a popular French cocktail that was terribly made was charged an extra $3, only to be sent back to be remade. Pricing should be transparent on the menu and frankly it's overinflated. I've eaten at 3 star Michelin restaurants all over the world and have never seen pricing like this. Even at this price point, you should have white table cloths and complimentary bread but that's not the experience here. One and done. read more

I called and placed a takeout order while staying at the Residence Inn (I am not sure if they typically do takeout, but they obliged). I ordered the Bison Burger (bunless) and asked if it came with a side, as it was not indicated on the menu. I was told it came with a side of fries. When I asked if I could substitute something in place of the fries, I was told there were no substitutions (not even a salad) and that I would need to purchase a side separately. The burger was overcooked and dry (Bison is usually served medium), but the toppings (bacon jam and blue cheese) were pretty good. They served the arugula, pickled onions and aioli on the side. I also ordered a side of creamed spinach, which was very bland and in need of additional seasoning. Overall, the decor was nice and the servers who assisted me were friendly and helpful. However, while the food fit my need for dinner, as other reviews indicate, the food was overpriced and not worth what I paid. I am not sure I would not return - at least not for the food. read more

To start 1889 was our first choice but we thought we couldn't get in because Open Table reservation site didn't have an early enough spot available in the evening. So we booked another restaurant. Long story short we ended up at 1889 anyway and they got us a good table anyway. From the start we were treated well and service was great. The specials, menu and any questions were explained throughly. My spouse order a cocktail and later a glass of wine and I ordered my usual a soda. For an appetizer we shared jumbo shrimp cocktail and the cocktail sauce was great. For dinner my spouse had filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes and bernaise sauce and the steak was cooked to her liking and the potatoes and sauce were very good. I had the Dayboat Scallops the sauce was excellent and the fondant potatoes were a very pleasant surprise that went well with the sauce. But being me I wanted salt & pepper. It also came with asparagus but being later in the season the asparagus wasn't as good as early season asparagus. For dessert my spouse had very good vanilla bean ice cream with chocolate sauce and I had their crème brûlée was delicious. Overall we would definitely eat here again. read more

1889 is the bomb! Fantastic menu all around from cocktails to food. My hubby and I shared the bread and butter to start which came with 3 different butters and all were amazing. And we also split the cowboy ribeye for 2! Comes with whipped garlic mash (super creamy from all the butter in them...) and we split the carrots. Definitely don't forget the mushrooms! Eric is one of the great ones. He offered suggestions for or appetizers and made a great recommendation for the Mrs. wine. The ribeye and the sirloin were both cooked to perfection and delicious. The Brussel sprouts are in a realm of their own. The creator of that recipe should be up for sainthood. Malbec was a perfect match for the steak as was the Pinot noir. I had to close my eyes and just savor the experience! It was so delicate and flavorful. My husband had the same cut and was also very pleased. We order the Brussel sprouts and the truffle fries for sides. My daughter demolished the Brussel sprouts, that were cooked to perfection. The truffle fries were delicious too. Swing and a miss. The menu seems interesting but was poorly executed. Bland is the theme, from a dull and fatty charcuterie to a nearly naked Cesar salad to a very thin and vinegary béarnaise. The bruléed marrow was so overcooked it lost all qualities except the almost liquified fat, and it was served with greasy grilled bread. The steak was cooked well (medium rare) with a nice crust and good flavor, and the only redeeming item in this multi-course $300 dinner. Unfortunately the steak was topped with overcooked, cold, flavorless mushrooms. Dessert continued to disappoint with soggy crusts and huge chunks of bland hazelnuts. I've eaten at 1889 almost a dozen times now. The service is very good, the atmosphere is dark yet vibrant, and the food is usually great. However, tonight I had the halibut (highly praised by the waitress) and was extremely disappointed. It was obviously previously frozen, with no flavor whatsoever, plus it was a bit overcooked. I certainly don't mind paying higher prices for high quality food but this $50 dish was blah. I've had better fish at Long John Silvers. I'll give them a mulligan this time, and dine there again in the future. But I will NOT order the halibut and I recommend everyone avoid. Note: The steaks have been consistently great. read more

This restaurant did not disappoint! Being from Texas it is hard to review steaks from other states. 1889 had a great steak that was comparable to some of the greatest steakhouses in San Antonio, TX. We didn't make reservations so unfortunately by the time we arrived the weight was an hour but the hostess was quick to point out that there were several seats available at the bar and we could be served right away. The bartenders were friendly and would even make small talk with us when not working on drinks. The pours were generous and a new drink was offered right as we were finishing the one we had. The steak and sides were cooked just right with great flavor. Overall it was a great experience from the quality of the food to the service from the staff. read more

The decor was an odd modernization of old themes . Our service was basic but met our needs. The stake was okay but for the price it was a poor value. I was expecting an included side, but it was served on a smear of potato. Soup to nuts, this place is a tourist trap. I blame myself for expecting more authenticity and character from a ritzy development trying to capitalize on the spirit of a community. For the appetizer we ordered the fish cakes that were served with steamed sweet peppers and sauce that was amazing! Their cocktails were very good too. Little overpriced but the view was nice. We ordered steaks and had the cavatappi mac and cheese that was so creamy and delicious. The steaks are served with homemade sauces. They have a sauce akin to A1 but severely lacking the acidity to cut the fatty steak cuts. Same with their chimmichuri sauce. It was too oily and lacked that tang you get. The dessert was good. I took my Partner in Mischief to 1889 last night for his birthday dinner. It was good, but not worth the price we paid. Our service also wasn't spectacular considering the price -- 2 tables that arrived after us were served their meals before we were. Considering we only ordered one alcoholic drink, and neither of us ordered dessert, our bill was the most expensive we've ever had in our 8 years of exploring restaurants all over the world! I'm glad we checked it out, but we'll stick with Plonk or Boxcar Bistro next time we want to enjoy an amazing meal without breaking the bank. read more

They added brussel sprouts, which were a bit over-powering and the dressing lacked the lemon, anchovies, and garlic of a traditional Caesar salad. Serving sizes were good, two large halibut fillets and a good sized boneless ribeye. The steak was under seasoned and surprisingly dry, perhaps as a result of the lack of salt. It was also more medium than medium rare. My wife had a wonderful cocktail and I had good IPA from Stevensville. Serving sizes were good but I wanted more garlic mashed potatoes. read more

We had heard so many comments on 1889, and we were looking forward to celebrating my birthday there last night. Our server was outstanding... 5 stars, Ambiance was very good...4 stars. The drinks were good, but ridiculously overpriced. The dinner was ok. I had their ribeye and my wife had the salmon. My wife salmon seemed not to be fresh as advertised as it had a very "fishy smell" to it. She only had a few bites. She said her side of Brussel Sprouts was very good. This was a great steak dinner. I think the quality of the food was high, the Caesar salad was so fresh and crisp. Filet mingon and Ribeye were both served with garlic mashed potatoes. Dishes are slightly pricey and they charge high for plate additions like their house steak sauce ($4 for a small cup). We were placed at the bar which wasn't our ideal place to sit, the majority of the restaurant was empty but they claimed they could only seat us at the bar which ended up getting crowded throughout our meal. What is happening to Missoula restaurants??? I'm a born and raised Missoulian and this was my first time to 1889. Save your money folks! The 2 of the 3 staff members i encountered, one being our waitress Mary, were very snobby! Our cocktail waitress was very pleasant however. Key points; 1. You will be treated like your a greaser trying to sneak into a soc neighborhood if you exit and re-enter the building (this happened to 3 of us myself included). We were thoroughly questioned by the host, who had seen us all upon entering the first time and then existing. We were asked where we were going, the name on our reservation, then denied seeing the reservation until pointed out by us, and finally walked us back to our seats. 2. They will not split your tab! If are going to meet a group of friends prepare to spend some moolah! They will only split it evenly between your group. Our group had a $427 dollar tab so the guy that got a beer and a salad had to spend $106. We were all prepared to spend some money so it wasn't that big of a deal but we weren't prepared for that. 3. Our waitress threw a bread and butter appetizer on our tab instead of bringing us one piece of bread to finish off our bone marrow app. Didn't rectify it and my friend didn't want to cause any waves so he told her he'd just pay for it. Obviously before we knew there'd be no separate checks. 4. 20% gratuity is automatically added to your check. This point wouldn't normally bother me but this gave our waitress no reason to treat us respectfully for she'd be tipped well either way. Overall... some food great, some made very lazily (the fruit on the charcuterie board was not even rinsed. We had to do it ourselves in a cup of water. My wife and I frequent 1889. We went Saturday night and have noticed the service is getting worse the longer they are open. Staff dresscode is becoming more relaxed. Staff wearing jeans and flannel shirts. Empty drinks waiting to be filled. The food was good but ordering a charcuterie board and having it delivered to our table on a dinner plate is a little tacky. For the prices you pay and and to get this sort of atmosphere is to me, not acceptable. I've noticed the reviews are becoming more negative. All this information tells me that Staff is becoming complacent. I hope they step it up because I really enjoy the food but it may be time to eat elsewhere! read more

This restaurant, and specifically, the hostess, treated us horribly. There seemed to be some complete discrimination going on. We tried to call to make reservations all day. There was never an answer. When we arrive, the hostess asks us with much attitude, "Do you have a reservation?" I said, "no, we tried all day but no one would answer the phone." She says, "Well, AS YOU CAN SEE...we are incredibly busy!" Great. Super sorry I tried to give you my money. Right after me, another woman and her young son enter, also with the same number in their party and also with no reservation. So then she takes my name and says it will be an hour wait. She then seats the other same-sized party without reservations immediately. We return an hour later and she says, "YEAH, SORRY... I still don't have a timeframe for you as to when a table will be available." We then need to move out of the way so the woman who arrived after us and her young son can use the restroom, because they had been eating for the last hour. We left after another half hour wait. Will never return. I would recommend instead going to Lolo Creek Steakhouse, where we were told it would be an hour wait, and magically, we received our table after an hour! Also, their food rocked. I can only assume that the food at 1889 tastes like hate and pretentiousness but since they didn't give me the opportunity, I'm not sure. read more
