we had the halibut and a ribeye with a caesar salad starter. The salad was tasty but not anything like a traditional ceasar. They added brussel sprouts, which were a bit over-powering and the dressing lacked the lemon, anchovies, and garlic of a traditional Caesar salad. Serving sizes were good, two large halibut fillets and a good sized boneless ribeye. The steak was under seasoned and surprisingly dry, perhaps as a result of the lack of salt. It was also more medium than medium rare. My wife had a wonderful cocktail and I had good IPA from Stevensville. Serving sizes were good but I wanted more garlic mashed potatoes. read more

I don't believe they use Prime beef and there are much better steaks in Missoula - if you want Texas Roadhouse quality just go to Texas Roadhouse. This restaurant, and specifically, the hostess, treated us horribly. There seemed to be some complete discrimination going on. We tried to call to make reservations all day. There was never an answer. When we arrive, the hostess asks us with much attitude, "Do you have a reservation?" I said, "no, we tried all day but no one would answer the phone." She says, "Well, AS YOU CAN SEE...we are incredibly busy!" Great. Super sorry I tried to give you my money. Right after me, another woman and her young son enter, also with the same number in their party and also with no reservation. So then she takes my name and says it will be an hour wait. She then seats the other same-sized party without reservations immediately. We return an hour later and she says, "YEAH, SORRY... I still don't have a timeframe for you as to when a table will be available." We then need to move out of the way so the woman who arrived after us and her young son can use the restroom, because they had been eating for the last hour. We left after another half hour wait. Will never return. I would recommend instead going to Lolo Creek Steakhouse, where we were told it would be an hour wait, and magically, we received our table after an hour! Also, their food rocked. I can only assume that the food at 1889 tastes like hate and pretentiousness but since they didn't give me the opportunity, I'm not sure. read more

What is happening to Missoula restaurants??? I'm a born and raised Missoulian and this was my first time to 1889. Save your money folks! The 2 of the 3 staff members i encountered, one being our waitress Mary, were very snobby! Our cocktail waitress was very pleasant however. Key points; 1. You will be treated like your a greaser trying to sneak into a soc neighborhood if you exit and re-enter the building (this happened to 3 of us myself included). We were thoroughly questioned by the host, who had seen us all upon entering the first time and then existing. We were asked where we were going, the name on our reservation, then denied seeing the reservation until pointed out by us, and finally walked us back to our seats. 2. They will not split your tab! If are going to meet a group of friends prepare to spend some moolah! They will only split it evenly between your group. Our group had a $427 dollar tab so the guy that got a beer and a salad had to spend $106. We were all prepared to spend some money so it wasn't that big of a deal but we weren't prepared for that. 3. Our waitress threw a bread and butter appetizer on our tab instead of bringing us one piece of bread to finish off our bone marrow app. Didn't rectify it and my friend didn't want to cause any waves so he told her he'd just pay for it. Obviously before we knew there'd be no separate checks. 4. 20% gratuity is automatically added to your check. This point wouldn't normally bother me but this gave our waitress no reason to treat us respectfully for she'd be tipped well either way. Overall... some food great, some made very lazily (the fruit on the charcuterie board was not even rinsed. We had to do it ourselves in a cup of water. If you want to be treated well wear a suit or diamonds. I had forgotten to wear mine and I paid for it! Never going back! read more

My wife and I frequent 1889. We went Saturday night and have noticed the service is getting worse the longer they are open. Staff dresscode is becoming more relaxed. Staff wearing jeans and flannel shirts. Empty drinks waiting to be filled. The food was good but ordering a charcuterie board and having it delivered to our table on a dinner plate is a little tacky. For the prices you pay and and to get this sort of atmosphere is to me, not acceptable. I've noticed the reviews are becoming more negative. All this information tells me that Staff is becoming complacent. I hope they step it up because I really enjoy the food but it may be time to eat elsewhere! read more

When 1889 first opened in Missoula we were excited to have a new place to dine. It had become a date night place for us as well as business dinners. Friends and family joined us on several occasions as well. Our last experience there left us unbelievably disappointed due to a combination of very unavailable service, forgotten drinks and mix ups in our food. (Our dinner that evening was somewhere around $550). We mentioned our mishaps that evening to a manager and also decided to take the time to write them an email; not something we tend to do. Our response from them, in short was, "better luck next time". We were not looking for a free meal, we simply thought it should have been handled in a much more caring way. If I could give zero stars, I would. We ordered, prepared to spend a few hundred dollars on our first meal in Montana. To our utter shock, when a table of 17 clearly WAY overserved men was shouting obscenities so loudly we could not even hear each other at our booth, management offered to pack up our meal for us so we could leave! I heard F**K, S**T, BULLS**T and other curses hollered for our 35 minute stay. I asked the manager on duty to ask them to be quiet. She said no, that 17 men are going to be loud no matter what. She reiterated that we could leave with our food packed up, including a main course that could be "packed up." We refused and left. Unless you want to drop $300-$400 listening to someone else's drunken free for all, skip this one. Management prefers its overserved obnoxious drunks over the rest of its patrons, and there's no separation from the bar and dining, so you're on your own in there. read more

We have waited to go to this restaurant for a special occasion. We've heard great things about the food and service, so we were excited. I made a reservation online and requested a window seat, but was seated in the bar area at a high table close to a loud group. I'm glad they were having fun but I ended up requesting to move into the dining room. My husband and I both ordered steaks but they were tough, flavorless and overcooked. Neither of us were impressed and when the waitress asked us how our meal was, we told her "it's okay". She offered to take it back but we ended up paying and leaving. Mother in laws birthday. The service itself was decent but unfortunately I can't remember her name. Lets just get right to it. Supposedly they serve Prime Graded steaks here, if that is true they are THE WORST PRIME steaks that I have ever had in a restaurant or my life. The Chimi sauce helped some but the steak itself was like shoe leather. Some have said this place is overpriced. If the steaks were actually what they advertise it be a steal. At the end of the day this is just one more crappy place selling severely mediocre food. Save your money, go to Costco buy some Prime steaks and go home and learn how to reverse sear them. read more

Our service was great, very friendly staff and clean atmosphere. Very impressed with our cocktail The Sophia Loren that will be the main reason we will return also for the crab cakes . My steak was cooked perfectly highly recommend the Demi sauce . If we had any critique it would be the confusion with the scallops and the potatoes we thought we had 5 scallops but it was actually only 3 and the other 2 were potatoes , kinda pricey for 3 scallops honestly.. but beautiful presentation, we will be back! read more

I really wanted to say the food was good, but after waiting 10+ mins for a server that never came we braved a monsoon and tried somewhere else. My hopes were as high as the prices on the menu (that we had to snag from the people at the table next to us) I'm not sure what they are going for with this one.... but there are a TON of great restaurants in a two block radius of here that are more reasonably priced and the servers actually talk to you. I proposed to my girlfriend today and thought this would be the best place to celebrate. We drank 1 glass of wine at our hotel before showing up to dinner. When we arrived my new fiancé and I got seated and then that's when everything changed. They brought us champagne (which we later found out was nonalcoholic) and then told us we couldn't order a bottle of wine because we were "too drunk". The manager said that "three of them" decided we were drunk and we shouldn't be served. When I questioned what we did wrong I was told "because you are questioning it that proves you are drunk". They kept getting mad at us for just asking questions. They made us feel super uncomfortable and awkward. literally turned our special night into a nightmare. read more

Food is great, but I am incredibly annoyed by the reservation system: it is online only and requires a credit card and a cancellation fee! It took me no less than ten minutes to complete (the system would not accept my card for some reason, and I quadruple checked all the details.) Finally just put a different card in. Rumour is that 1889 is owned by the same people who own Shadowskeep. If that wasn't the rumor, it is now! If you are familiar with Shadowskeep that should give you an idea of what to expect here, slightly higher price but excellent food. We shared a $38 steak with a chimichurri sauce. It was excellent although I would have liked to try the port wine sauce, not all choices are mine to make. To go along we had a salad with cherries and the French onion soup. Both excellent although, this is a fancy place - so the soup was a little cheese shy. When I look in over a French onion soup, I do not want to see soup, I want to see a full circle of marginally burnt Gruyere, I want to have to figure out how to get to the soup without making a cheesy mess. I want a French onion soup puzzle. All the food was great. I wish I could cook a steak like that. My best-ever sous vide then flat iron seared steak didn't compare to what was probably their typical attempt. Gripes... they have a Moscow Mule-like drink on tap... yea IDK how that works, but it costs the same $10 as their other drinks. Seems like an something on tap should be less expensive. Entree sides are $10 each, that had better one amazing baked potato. I recommend the Mexican Pharmacy (farmacia)... Tequila Mezcal honey lemon ginger, really good. I hope these guys do well, it's a nice date place, makes it into the downtown fancy club (Pearl, Scottie's, Plonk, Wally & Bucks). read more

This place is amazing. The food is fantastic, the cocktails are excellent the staff are wonderful. Sat at the bar with a buddy and had the crab cake as an appetizer (best crab cake I have ever had in my life) then we shared the Tomahawk 30oz Ribeye with gorgonzola. The steak was mouth watering and melted like butter. Perfectly fatty and juicy. Had four cocktails between us: Date Old Fashioned- so fucking tasty. never thought of macerated dates with bourbon but the flavor is incredible. The smoke runner- tequila based cocktail that was so lovely. I had mine with mezcal instead and it was perfect. The Draft Dark and Stormy- Holy fucking shit this was a great drink. Perfect. The best part of the restaurant is that the service was really relaxed. The staff didn't ask personal questions or talk too much. It isn't really a Missoula vibe which I thank God for. Most Missoula restaurants are trash. This place is LA/NYC quality. Please don't bring your children here, they will not be welcomed. Best restaurant in Missoula by FAR. read more

This is my new favorite restaurant in Missoula! I use a Food-Diamond approach to rating restaurants which means I consider quality, quantity, price and service. 1889 gets it done on all accounts! The menu is interesting, with a great variety to choose from. The food itself is exceptionally tasty, and comes very well presented. The waitstaff are attentive and friendly. The prices are a little higher than the more casual places in Missoula but match the quality and service very well indeed. The location itself is really interesting - there is a bar area for more casual dining and the main, window-view side for more formal dining. We were on the more formal side and had wonderful, interesting views out onto Higgins and Front. 1889 has an extensive wine, spirit and beer menu too. I ordered the flat iron steak, medium rare. It came out perfectly, and was tender with very good taste. My wife ordered the bison burger (no bun). The sauce and cheese topping superbly complemented the bison, which was also cooked perfectly. read more

Came here with a good group of friends on a Saturday night. The staff was friendly. Two people ordered the prime rib steak, one ordered the steak frites, and I ordered the cob salad with a bowl of French onion soup and the crispy pork belly. They had a good selection of wine and beer. We did not order cocktails but a good list of fun drinks. Everyone enjoyed their food. This place is expensive but for a special night out I would recommend. The atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant is fun. The fire alarm did go off and we had to clear the restaurant. I've given this place 3 chances now. It is billed as a steak house, but it hasn't cooked steak correctly to order yet (out of 3 steaks I ordered 0 were done correctly, and 3 out of 5 others with me have ordered have been incorrect). I like very rare steak, it has come out medium to well...... Last time I inquired if they served it Blue (meaning as rare as you can get it). The waiter said absolutely. I ordered it blue and it came medium (medium rare at best). It is astounding to me a "fancy" steak house can't cook a steak correctly. Their appetizers are not bad, Brussel sprouts are very good. Dessert was good as well. My friends who order fish dishes liked theirs. I would maybe do a two star everything considered, but since it is billed as a nice steakhouse and has had major issues cooking steak correctly over the course of the year I have tried it I gotta go with 1 star. read more
