We heard many good things about this place for Taiwanese food so we made the drive out to Fremont for a Wednesday lunch. We ordered a massive Taiwanese feast fit for a king: Garlic String Beans, Popcorn Chicken, Minced Pork over Rice, Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, and House Special Malatang. Garlic String Beans (4/5): With a super fragrant and pungent garlic-infused flavor, the string beans are nicely blistered for that perfect soft yet crunchy and snappy texture. Popcorn Chicken (5/5): The crispy breading is pretty authentic for what'd you find in a Taiwanese night market, and the chicken thigh pieces are juicy! Crispy fried basil leaves and a dash of spicy powder add the finishing touches. Minced Pork over Rice (5/5): Served with pickled cabbage, a braised boiled egg, and bok choy, this bowl of lu rou fan was a Taiwanese banger! The divine braised soy sauce elixir engulfs every square inch of the rice and fatty pork, which melts in your mouth. Oh, and pro tip: it comes with a refill of meat if you ask! Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup (5/5): This beef noodle soup has a relatively clear broth instead of being heavily soy sauce-based. The broth is still tantalizingly aromatic with authentic-tasting deep beef and soy sauce flavors, and the beef is very tender and not tough! Topped pickled mustard greens add the chef's kiss. House Special Malatang (4/5): Kind of like a personal hotpot but with a fiery and numbing mala-flavored broth. The broth looks super greasy but is actually quite light beneath the top layer of oil. I came here with a friend after shopping around the fremont sunday market and it was a short 4 min walk! We came during late afternoon (2pm) and we were seated right away. The staff here are so friendly, we were directed to the menu and told about their current promo (BOGO boba)!! I also dropped my chopsticks and I was given new ones right away, they are so attentive! The food was also brought out immediately which was so nice. I ordered the beef noodles and it was a really decent amount with yummy broth. My friend got the mala beef udon noodles which was also a large amount and so good! For the promo we got the matcha creama and it's perfect-- the boba is cooked well, and just the right balance of matcha flavor/sweetness. For our appetizer we also got the 19 gold chicken and I didn't love the sauce but it was fried really well. The space is a bit dim and small, there is around 10 tables! It's silky smooth and the boba is on the smaller side, easy to chew. I got the minced pork over rice for a lighter meal. The Bok Choy was perfectly soft and the pork is slightly sweet ! The egg is boiled which isn't my favorite but it was still flavorful. I like how balanced the dish is with the meat, rice and veges. We walked in around 6pm and got seated really quickly. The server went over the menu with us and hyped up their malatang, so I thought why not..? I ordered the house special malatang with original broth and my fiance got the beef noodle soup. I also ordered a honey green tea, which was probably my best decision of the night. The malatang was a big pass. The broth was overly garlicky, so much so it was like spicy garlic water. I love garlic, but that was way too much and there was no depth to the broth. The toppings were your generic BP/Taiwanese hot pot items, so nothing too special with that. The beef noodle soup came out lukewarm. The beef was even border line cold in the center. The bowl was mostly the broth and maybe 5-6 smaller chunks of beef. It didn't look too appetizing to be honest, and nothing near what the photos on here looked like. I did so many pandemic takeouts from 19 Gold whenever I'm in the mood for a malatang and don't feel like driving all the way to Chinatown. I ate in once and it was a poor experience, so I'll stick to the takeouts in future. PROS: - Big menu with lots of traditional and mix options, they have a good selection of everything from malatang to boba drinks. You pay extra for add ons - Filling food portions, good drinks too. I love their spicy flavors - Nice little seating area inside and outside, limited seating available - long wait for walk ins, usually need to join a wait list available on Yelp CONS: - Terrible parking, be ready to spend a lot of looking for legit parking and walking back to the restaurant. The parking signs in the nearby streets are mega confusing and very unhelpful - Some of their items are expensive in my opinion, you can get a malatang for $15 at Chinatown whereas you pay an average of $20-$22 for a bowl here. I reckon it's because of it's location - The first and only time I'll dine in to this place. There were flies where we were seated, waiters here don't smile so don't expect a friendly server: they are quick, expressionless, and efficient. One of them spilled something when serving the table next to us and promptly cleaned it up, without an apology. It's very poor training. Overall I do recommend their food, which is the only thing that matters when reviewing a restaurant.
