After reading some of the reviews I'll have to state emphatically that this review is more about Nathaniel then the company since I've only had this interaction with them. Do your due diligence on bigger jobs. My job was a chimney cleaning on a gas fireplace and it was GREAT! Nathaniel H did an awesome job. He was on time, efficient, friendly and most importantly he disassembled and cleaned my gas fireplace with precision. I can actually see the beautiful logs, embers and flame. I'm so impressed. I've used other companies that just clean out a few leaves and call it a day. Nathaniel actually cleaned my fireplace and let me know what was causing the soot. I tried to be patient with 1st Choice Residential with repairing my fireplace. The technician came out on 2/24/21, and I paid $159 for him to tell me that I needed to replace the control module on my electric/gas fireplace, and they will have to order the part to come back out to repair it, and you know what I have not heard anything from him since or 1st Choice since then. I have called multiple times (6+) only to hear "let me reach out to the technician"(I guess it's a script). It is now 9/30/21, and the only thing I received was an email to approve the expense after 6 months of calling. What a joke. I even called today, 9/30/21, only to hear the script again "let me reach out to the technician." At this point, I don't need to hear from the technician, but I will be reaching out to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). 1st Choice, you have had your chances, and if I can give you a zero star rating, believe me, I would. Service was what you'd expect from a professional technician, hence 2 stars. There was deceitfulness in labor charges. One labor cost explained as a shady/unreferenced "Texas Inspection Law" of fire places (~$160...1st Choice please post law that for others to reference). Another is added labor costs for additional services (during the same visit!). *Beware* - They troubleshoot your fireplace for issues during the inspection, then charge you additional labor for "troubleshooting" and install during the service, this is double-dipping. total bs! In addition to the double-dipping, service was completed on my fireplace without informing me prior what the total cost would be...it wasn't until I checked my CC bill that I realized I was hit with a $300.94 charge. No Call, No Show, No Apology Homeowners, beware! We recently contacted 1st Choice Residential Chimney to have our chimney cleaned and a damper clamp installed prior to moving into our new house. Simple enough! 1st Choice scheduled our appointment for 2 p.m. on a Friday, and we were given a two-hour service window (2 to 4 p.m.). No call, no show! After 4 p.m. on the day of our appointment, we called the company to discuss next steps. Once we reached a scheduler, it took yet another hour to reach the assigned service provider. After all was said and done, we never received an apology (or any impression that the scheduler or assigned professional cared about wasting our time), so we decided to take our business elsewhere. Everyone is going to mess up at some point or another. It's not the mess that matters but how you recover from it. 1st Choice failed on both accounts, and their lack of ownership is evident from their customer-facing staff to their leadership. After reading other reviews, we realize that our experience is not unique. We hope this review will help guide other homeowners to a company that cares about their customers' time, not just their money. read more

Scott came out and checked out my Blaze Grill. He discussed all the options and due to the many problems and broken parts, I opted to buy a new one. Scott was on time, respective of property, extremely competent and knowledgeable. He completed the work in time for my grill out party and I could not be more pleased. They were happy to come out and charge me half of the fee to clean the grill but when I followed up about actually repairing the grill they disappeared off the face of the earth. What a bait and switch! Reached out to them multiple times with no response. Terrible all around. Not trustworthy, do not recommend. read more

This response is to the remarks recently rebutted on "wing-ti". Hispanic workers sent to my home had no knowledge of the work to perform. They had no plans, blue prints etc. The "project manager" and the "owner" couldn't even tell me the name of the guys at my house when I ask. The Hispanic men that came to my house were day laborers and had never worked for this company before and told me so. Hence, 1st choice chimney had no knowledge of their skill capability. A permit is required by the town of Highland Park to build/install any kind of new fireplace. Jeff told me it was not. He never even inquired with the town because it is required to be permitted and inspected as the town Code inspectors informed me. This was the first error brought to my attention when an "real" builder was brought to the job to fix the mess made by 1st choice chimney. A builder licensed, not lic, Means & Matthews informed me of the full scope of work involved with regard to all code enforcements. After writing a review on Yelp, the so called owner, called me and ask : "what's your deal?" They told me to have electricians relocate electric outlets. Those electricians where at my house at the time the "day laborers" where here. The electricians also saw the unprofessional and unskilled workers. The laborers where asking my electricians what to do? I will also ask the electricians here that day to write a review on what they saw that day. I will also post a photo of what the workers did that day. I'll be honest - my review is actually NOT for the work of this company but for an entirely alternate reason. Yesterday - Thursday, January 8th, 2014 - I was in a head-on collision in Lake Worth, TX. A few workers from First Choice Chimney were working at a duplex on the street I was traveling when the other car hit me. Brad Woodruff, worker for FCC, and two of his coworkers (Gerardo and another sweet man) were the first on the scene and immediately provided assistance to me. I was hurt and in shock from the accident and Brad's quick response was very helpful. He pried my car door open, instructed me to not move my head, asked me if I was ok and if anything was broken, and even helped deflate the airbag and provided ventilation in my car. He was even so kind to speak to my husband on my phone to let him know the severity of the accident but that I was ok and that 911 had already been dispatched to the location. These men were so quick to help that I felt safe and protected in this very difficult situation. They spoke to the police, the EMTs, and the fire department about the accident and were very kind and concerned for me. I know nothing of their work ethic, but if it's comparable to the way they helped me with this accident, then I would hire them in a heartbeat. Thank you to Brad and his team for the assistance yesterday. Had this accident happened and no one had been around, I don't think it would have been such a positive outcome. Had 1st Choice out due to the fact my direct vent fireplace would not light even though I was doing everything correctly to relight the pilot (turn gas off, wait, turn gas on, push in dial and the repeatedly push the igniter). Technician came out and could not get it to light either so he proceeded to remove the front grill and glass and lit the fireplace with a lighter thus proving the gas to the unit was good. He cleaned the glass and put it all back together and told me it was working fine (we have a light switch to turn on/off). I was not in the room when he left so thought he had in fact fixed everything until the pilot went out again and when I went through the steps again it would not light (I saw the igniter was never replaced). I called the company and was told "he got it working so no warranty". I proceed to tell them he lit the fireplace with a lighter, not the igniter and that is not a fix but more a band-aid. Owner called to inform there would be yet another trip charge and charge for any parts. I was not willing to pay for a trip charge as this should have been identified initially instead of just lighting the fireplace. He was not willing to do anything about this and kept defending that his technician "fixed" the problem. Very poor customer service!! read more

We moved last year to a new house & this one has gas logs instead of a wood fireplace like our old house. Last week it got cold & our heater went out downstairs, so I was going to turn on the fireplace to keep us from freezing. When I tried to turn on the gas fireplace it didn't work. They did some chimney repair at our old house & we were happy with their work & professionalism, so I called them because to see if they worked on gas fireplaces & they sent out Marshall. He fixed it up & it works great now. It had a bad thermo sensor thing that didn't take him to long to replace & he cleaned up the glass doors which it made it look fantastic. We had 1st Choice Chimney out for a chimney sweep today and I couldn't have been more satisfied with the service we received. Brian was at our house a few minutes early and mentioned that he saw a note on our service ticket that I was on my lunch break...this was so nice, as many times I have scheduled other appointments over my lunch break they show up late. He was extremely professional and courteous, finished in just under an hour (which is what was estimated by 1st Choice beforehand) and left the chimney and surrounding area incredibly clean. He also showed me an issue we have with our gas pipe that poses a safety concern and told me exactly how we can correct it. Corina came out to repair my chimney and did a fantastic job. I had her also update my chimney with glass and update the paint. It looks great and works great.
