Great little classic bar/tavern. Service was friendly and attentive. Decent choice of craft beer and food menu looked good. Ordered side salad, which was ok, product was fresh, but almost had more carrots than lettuce. 21st burger was really good, meat was cooked perfectly to temp., comes with a large serving of fries, bacon was perfectly crispy. Comes with a nice pile of onion rings, but my rings tasted stale; room temp, and no crunch to them at all. Tasted as if they were fried hours prior, then just placed on the burger. This is a pretty casual place that had a good feel to it. Service was great and they had a nice selection beer on tap. We stopped in just for a beer and check the place out since legend has it that this was a JFK hangout back in the day, as he lived a few doors down for a while. While an older establishment, it was pretty well maintained and I'm glad things seemed to be original from way back when. It's a little piece of history and glad we stopped in. read more

We were visiting for the weekend and really enjoyed our time at this place. Its casual and rowdy and we loved it. You walk in and you're transported back into the past (I'm guessing). Its got a great casual vibe, lots of interesting things to look at (historical photos, documents, architecture)... This is not just my favorite bar but one of my favorite places to physically be present at in Boston. The food is really good but the general atmosphere is why I like being there. When I see people ask for "hidden" places to go I'm always low key rolling my eyes but this place is that. Calm down, you're not too interesting for the places normal tourists go, you're not precious and they're not sheep. Alright I think this review kind of got away from me. We wondered in this place because it was during the day after walking around and we wanted a divey bar . I ordered a chicken Caesar salad and the kids ordered a burger and nachos (small plate) . Well the " small plate" nachos isn't exactly so small. It was a massive pile of chips , chicken , CHEESE , tomatoes , green onions sour cream and CHEESE !!! You can definitely share this nacho between 2-4 people ( depending women or men lol ) . The Caesar dressing is good . I always sample the dressing before ordering because some places haven't figured out how to make that right yet . Lil man didn't complain at all about the burger with smoked bacon so I'm gonna assume it was just right for a bar burger . I ordered an 8th ward (2 of them ) and it was poured on the heavy side , definitely not gonna complain about that . So all in all this bar is a good stop for good food and cold drinks !!! read more

You know what you get when you come here, dark interior with ok pub food. The steak tip filet mignon was good for a pub and the food average. It's the atmosphere and knowing this is one of Bostons oldest pubs. I wish the potatoes were a little better but the salad and the tips were good. For the life of me I can not understand why they are typically on special with BBQ sauce. The burgers look good and my friends food was pleasing to the eye. The one french fry I stole hardly seemed worth the calories it added but they liked the food and the one who wanted to come was from out of town. Not sure the locals come here as this is my third time and I frequent the area. Twice to eat and once to celebrate a birthday. I really do wish they would scrub the restaurant a little more than what they currently. Admittedly, I was quite leery to slide across my seat. If you have never come, then try it out. The 21st Amendment has the best nachos I've ever eaten. Hands down and without a close second. The grilled chicken that tops it is well spiced and juicy. The pepper jack cheese gives nuanced flavor to every hearty tri-color chip. The sour cream is dotted with scallions and the jalepenos and salsa are fresh and tangy. I've never seen nachos that I've considered "lovingly assembled" before, but the 21st has them. I was in the mood for these nachos since St. Patty's Day of '07, and when I went last night the year's delay was worth it. I chased those nachos down with a 21st Burger - carmelized onions, swiss, onion rings and smoked bacon - and walked out of there feeling obscenely full. What a place it is. And it is absolutely dead on weekdays. No wait, good service, great atmosphere. I love it. read more

With a name like that, why would you not exercise your right. Everybody can delightfully grab a beer that presumable John Kerry and a few famous Bostanians stops in for a drink. It's a bit of a divey bar, like most bars in Boston. It's historic, old, dark with local brews with just enough grime to feel comfortable in. Our server recommended the hard cider by Downeast and the Gray Lady. Both rec's were superb and perfectly described. Hard cider is made from real apples and taste like it too while the other beer had hints of cardamom and spice. We tried looking for Downeast at the grocery store, so sad we couldn't find it, so totally make sure you get some here. We got a side of stringy onion rings too, at $4 a good portion. I'll just say, whatever you get, make sure to ask for the Chipotle mayo. You can put that in anything, you know what I'm saying! Affordable, friendly, (awesome service than any dive bar I've ever been in period - you earned that extra star), good food and a perfect drinking hole in the heart of Boston. It's your right! Beautiful inside and very warm--does the fireplace still work? Yes, the staff are hot. The drinks were strong and seeminly layered as they were a lot different after we mixed them (dark and stormy and Moscow mule). I had the quesidilla which was really good--not too much of any one component. Sour cream was whipped so it went on easy, but the salsa was too chunky. Friend had the burger with onion rings on it and liked it a lot, although it fell apart. Onion rings were 'strings' so connected on one side, abd very peppery and good. The name alone does it for me. And it really does have old school flavor. It really fits its setting RIGHT across the street from the statehouse. Low ceilings with wooden beams, lattice windows. Low lighting as though it's being lit by candle lanterns. You get the sense of being transported into an old tavern. Cept maybe for the flatscreen TVs. It's small but quaint, and the drinks aren't cheap but they're loaded with booze. At least that was my experience with the gin martini I had, which I had to make my friend finish lest I get toasted. It's a pub, that's for sure. But something about it is different than your usual Boston Irish dive. A nice change of scenery and clientele if nothing else. read more

Weak drinks and rude service. Not worth your time or money. Just went there with a group of friends and asked for four watermelon margarita shots - Instead of giving us actual shots (ie 1.5 ounces of alcohol), they split one drink across for of us and charged more than $40 (when it should have been only $11). When we asked about it we were met with a snide comment "life isn't fair"... Also, while we were there the bartender broke a glass that sent glass shards all over the women's face who was sitting next to us...don't waste you're time or risk your safety with this place. read more

Ordered the "Asian" Chicken Salad. What a disappointment. The lettuce was wilted - I mean - wilted Romaine? How old does it have to be to wilt? The chicken was chunks of over-cooked breaded chicken with some sesame seeds on it, tossed in some kind of sauce. It was very salty. The dressing was blah. I'm still not sure why the addition of orange pieces, peanuts and "ginger" dressing counts as an Asian salad. Colleagues had more decadent entrees. Should have gotten what they got. read more

Love this place! We found 21st while looking for bars in close proximity to Boston Common and The Freedom Trail, and we lucked out! This cool little bar has so much history in Boston, and is a local haunt for the State House employees. The food is fantastic, most notably the sliders, 21st burger and pizza. Really nice craft beer selection, and the service was awesome. If you come, try and snag a bar seat and meet some of the regulars, they are quite an interesting bunch! We'll be back! read more

I had been to the 21st a few times before (seeing as how I work at Suffolk and it's right on campus). My previous favorite thing about the 21st is that they have PBR, woot! I went here last night, much to my chagrin, "it's a dingy bar!" is what I believed I said about it. We got there and the place was dead which is always good because then that means your waiter is attentive and your cup is always full. The nachos were awesome! Juicy chicken, gooey jack cheese, thick slices of jalapeno made them pack a punch of delicious flavor in each amazing bite. For dinner I got the tuna melt on rye (with no bacon!). The bread was really tangy, the tuna was dressed perfectly, not too wet at all, and the swiss chese rounded it out. The fries were crunchy and golden. And my pickle was more cucumber-like rather than shriveled and brine-y, which I loved. (See my pictures!) Also the music was awesome which I was taken aback by. Morningwood, Dishwalla, Death Cab, Hot Hot Heat, etc. All in all this was a great dining experience and I will totally go back anytime! read more

I really wish I could give this place 3.5 stars - I wouldn't necessarily recommend that anyone go here but I also hold nothing against it so a 3 or 4 star rating just doesn't seem to accurately encompass how I feel. That said, we work with what we have and I'm feeling friendly - 4 stars it is. So why the ambivalence you ask? From the start I wasn't sure what I thought. The bar's website looks fair enough save for the pictures of people that look like people I wouldn't want to hang out with. Judgy but true. The nachos are pretty fantastic and WELL loaded, the wine/beer selection is passable and not offensively over priced, the wait staff are friendly without actually being attentive, etc. etc. The bathroom is weirdly located sort of in the kitchen and smells... nostalgic. Not bad exactly but reminiscent of Creepy Crawlers, those little plastic bugs you "cooked" in the 80s. Would I go there again? Sure? Would I seek it out? Eh. read more

Solid bar in the Beacon Hill area right off the Green T. My buddies decided to hit this place up for some beers and snacks. They had a nice selection of beers. Really enjoyed the pumpkin spice ale complete with sugar/cinnamon brim, mm mm mmm. Perfect for the season :) Their sweet potato fries are also pretty amazing, some of the best I've had. Crispy, flavorful, you really can taste the sweet potato, which I can't say about most places that offer them! We also had the sliders with onion rings. Pretty standard, although our onion rings came out cold and soggy. But being as hungry as we were, we scarfed em down anyway. The setup is also pretty cozy in the back. They have a couple large flat screen plasmas up at the bar and in the back where you can relax and watch the game. read more

So I'm torn on my review between a 3 & 4 stars. My friends and I wanted to grab dinner so 5 of us showed up and within a half hour we were at a table. They were very kind and accommodating for us and I greatly appreciate it. Now there was a draft coming from the kitchen so we had "hot & cold flashes" throughout the night. The food was very good. I ordered the Turkey Club and it was delicious and a lot of food. My friend order the buffalo wings and she loved them. Spicy but good! My husband ordered the buffalo chicken wrapped and lets say he didn't speak for a good 10 minutes. So the food is definitely worth it and not the typical bar food. We had some friends meet up with us over the night and the staff was very nice and moved tables for us to make everything work. I was astonished by how great they were. Here is where I want to remove a star comes in: One of our couple friends showed up for drinks after they had dinner in Cambridge. Well, remember that draft that i mentioned? He asked our waitress if there was any way they could close the backdoor (we assumed that is where the draft was coming from) as it was very cold and many of our party had their jackets on. Waitress stopped dead looked at him and said "you need to be more respectful to the cook and not make outrageous demands. That is very rude of you to do and please don't talk to the cook again". I watched this happen. The cook never came out of the kitchen, we never spoke to him and our friend didn't even eat dinner there. So where did the attitude come from? The other issue that we had was when we broke out how to split up the check, they didn't charge us any of the tax but put it on the other tab. So one check didn't have any tax and the other did. That is just baffling that it was that difficult for them to run the tab. It was just very confusing as we wrote out everything and explained that tax just needed to be charged and they can run it as two different tabs. Both women agreed this was possible. I'm leaving it at 4 stars ONLY because they were so accommodating to our ever growing party and we did have a great time with our friends. read more

Came here with a few friends on accident, in search of another bar/restaurant. We asked to get seated, after viewing a couple of empty tables, but we were told 20 min wait so we sat at the bar. We ordered a couple of different drinks and they were okay - drinkable but nothing special. Where the remaining 3 stars came off were from the nachos I ordered. They were huge but tasted horrible: cheese was cold and rubbery upon delivery to our table, it was covered in sour cream despite that I didn't ask for it. The only positive thing was the guac. To make matters worse, the bar tender watched me pick at the plate and not eat, and when I told him they were cold and not good, he just asked if he should take the plate away. Complete waste of the $15 I still had to pay for them. Upon reflection, it's a very low key bar, which may have appeal to some folks. But for blah drinks, bland food, and bad service, I won't be coming back. read more

I've honestly loved 21st Amendment for my entire decade living in Boston, but last night was one of the worst customer services experiences I could imagine. Not five minutes after the bartender served our group a round of shots, the same bartender was screaming at my friend who had gotten sick from said shots. An Uber had been called and we were trying to get the girl safely from the bathroom outside. During this time, maybe every person affiliated with the bar (it seemed like even friends of the bar owners/workers) came to scream at my friend and threaten that the police would be called (for what? She was trying to stop being sick and leave the bar). It was the most bizarre and hostile experience, and obviously flustered an already drunk girl, making the exit even worse. The bouncers also wouldn't let the girl and her other friends grab their jackets before leaving (I mean, are you kidding, it was below freezing out last night?!). Like I said, I love this place. Last night, however, showed a very ugly side to this establishment. read more

I was looking for a local pub with a good sandwich and the reviews led me here. I ordered the lobster roll and clam chowder and am still wondering why more people aren't recommending the lobster roll. It was fresh, huge and tasty and came with homemade chips. Had an awesome experience at the 21st amendment in Boston tonight. It was a busy spot, but a lot of fun and the staff was so hard working. Our server Rachel did a great job balancing a hectic shift, and on her birthday nonetheless. She was super busy and still managed to keep us satisfied with a smile on her face. Can't wait til the next time I can come back to this place and enjoy the excellent food and even better service. I'd take an espresso martini from that girl any time! read more
