Great food! I had salmon cakes, grits and eggs with a biscuit. 1 star because I have never been to a restaurant where there is an automatic gratuity of 20% for a party of one. On top of that, on the receipt they have a line for an additional tip (it isn't listed as ADDITIONAL tip which would alert you that a tip has already been imposed. It just reads "tip") If you're not paying close attention to the bill and you leave a typical 15-20% tip, you can end up being grossly overcharged. I just think that practice is pretty deceitful to customers. I am usually a generous tipper but having it forced upon me is not fair in my opinion. Just got done at 4 Brothers. I'm speechless you can't get any better than this place. All I have to say is you have to try their homemade biscuit. You will want to slap your mother now she may beat the hell out of you, but it's worth it. I will be dreaming about that little baby. I had the chicken and waffles and fried okra to share. Finally, a delicious breakfast place near our house. Everything was wonderful: service, food, portions, etc. The biscuit and fried chicken the best I have ever had. This is a small place and usually in spots like this you have those waiting for tables standing over you as you eat. This place asks everyone to wait outside until a table is free. Loved that. Also, they take (and encourage) reservations. 1 star less as they include a tip on your bill. We tipped on top of that. I also ordered a biscuit which was flakey and delicious( I REALLY wanted to try the cornbread biscuit with jalapeños but they were out ....next time I hope to try that!) Ok so this is definitely a must see spot in Warren/Plainfield NJ. At first I was annoyed with the proximity of the dinning tables-they really are way too close for my anti-social moods of comfort... but that's just me. I usually reserve 5 stars for places that I have been to more than once to make sure they are consistently great but I really really really liked 4 Brothers! I will make sure to update my review when I come again to let you all know if this is truly a 5 star place :) To start, I LOVE that they have reservations through Yelp. I use the app ALL THE TIME and its convenient. They even send text reminders and offer a way to edit the reservation as needed. I had a 10:30 am reservation on a Sunday and as soon as we entered the restaurant they knew who we were and where we were to be seated. The place is on the small side. I will say DEFINTELY make a reservation or else you could be waiting, 30 minutes to 1.5 hours during busy times. The décor is super cute, wooden-y and home-y. I like the floral table cloth and the fact that each table has its own pitcher of water. The server took my order on an ipad, which I really appreciate..little room for error. Heads up: If you order the fried chicken ( lets be honest, why wouldn't you be? ) it can take up to 20 minutes for it to come out. A good sign that its made fresh! I asked the server what I should get and he wholeheartedly recommended the red velvet pancakes. I was so down. The appetizer came out first. The Buffalo Fries were awesome! I can totally see myself getting this again. The sauce is amazing, as is the bleu cheese crumbles. The star of the show was definitely....the red velvet pancakes and the SYRUP....yes I said SYRUP. My sister pointed out to me that it had to be homemade. I tasted it with closer inspection and she was RIGHT. The syrup is so special. I could pour that ish on a plate and lap it up like a dog! In Korea, we say when something tastes really good and really homemade (like our grandma made it) it has SOHN MAHT, which translates literally to hand taste. This had hand taste. It's that undefinable, homemade quality you can't quite get at stores and restaurants. The biscuit was also a wonder. So soft, so buttery and almost cake-y. Very unique and unlike any other biscuit I have had before. Now the service was another thing, the owners were very thankful for every one of their customers and you could really feel that this was a family owned business. Made a same-day Yelp reservation for Sunday brunch and arrived on time with our table ready. Next to us was another reserved for a larger party who hadn't arrived yet once we left almost an hour and a half later. Pro: Reservations are prepped early and maintained. Con: Come back another time if that reserved table is the last standing so make reservations people! Here is classic southern food with some American classics and a few soul-added takes served in a setting crossing between cafe in size and structure x diner in offerings and refillable coffee x hip hospitality in service. The space, while small, is very clean and up to the times with technology being well-utilized as dine-in orders are taken on an iPad and online orders on their website or Eat24. Everything else counteracts that: the location in a small outdoor complex, the chalk board with the written special of the day, the cottage dining style and old school soul, R&B and funk music. Then there's the owner who, I'm assuming is one of the brothers, engages with diners and is eager to serve with a casual and minimally classic but modern jazzy style to boot (vest over a fitted tee, driver's cap and thick patterned socks in black Birkenstocks anyone?). I bet if you became a regular, he would remember and greet you like a friend. First timer? He can still joke and strike up a conversation. The medium-sized but simple menu is a plus. As everything is made-to-order, expect to wait 15-20 minutes for food to come out. Highlights are the fried goods--chicken, gater, catfish, fries, you name it. Not oily or heavy and the breading isn't too thick (it is a bit more on the gater nuggets and some parts of chicken). It's all a pretty clean eat for what it is. Their steak cut FRIES have a crisp exterior and piping hot fluffy potato-y goodness inside. Oh, and the seasonal FRIED GREEN TOMATOES are fantastic. Crisp and tangy with bite. No mush. The SPICY BAYOU SHRIMP AND GRITS come with 2 eggs and a biscuit. Tiger shrimp come with tail shells attached and their take on the bayou sauce isn't spicy. Interestingly, whatever the GRITS are laid on is the shape it retains once it cools down and the surface becomes almost smooth and shiny. Not a plate of mush and almost like jello but without the jiggle or texture. I'm thankful it's not bland. First time I had their BISCUITS, I didn't like it. This time around it looked different and tasted better. They make changes and evolve, guys! What started out dry and bland is now soft and slightly moist fluffy on the inside, if that makes sense. The outer surface dry and firm with body. Pour some of their in-house syrup over it or dab it into your egg yolk. Not sure how to describe their syrup other than it's not your typical and quite distinct in color with a particular aroma when consumed. Is it cane? Molasses? A mix? May I say my over easy eggs were perfection? The only downside I can think of is how their water tasted like melted ice cubes. TIP: Know what you want to try? Call beforehand to check availability. While ordering, the owner informed us the red velvet waffle was not available that day (what one of us wanted) and when we ordered gater nuggets, he headed into the kitchen to check if any were left. While you're at it, may as well try making a reservation. Not sure if they accept by phone but doesn't hurt to try as the one downside to reserving through Yelp is losing the benefit of anonymity as a Yelp reviewer. Not sure if that's the reason we were checked up on often or of my receiving four eggs with my biscuit. Nevertheless, appreciated the gesture. Make sure to sign up for their special offers and specials on their website. Once you do, you'll receive a code for $5 off your first online order of $30 or more. Goes to show it never hurts to do some research outside of Yelp :P The food here may not pack a major punch of flavor as one would assume of southern food fare but the execution is well done. Clean, subtle, simple and fresh is just their style of cookin' done right. I'll admit to feeling weird dining here--not in a bad way--possibly because of the high-low setting of a traditionally homey and down-to-earth cuisine and their millennial take on food and business which is definitely new and different. While a bit on the pricey side, they have the right to capitalize in Jersey. Worst service of any restaurant I have ever been to. Here is a very brief list of issues that occurred in my visit today: They rescheduled our reservation to a completely different time (reservation was made 3 days in advance). They told us to wait outside in sub zero temperature when we arrived 5m early to the time they set for us. They staggered the order taking between our two tables by about 20m (therefore food came out at completely different times for our adjacent tables). They served food within the same table over a span of 20min (therefore it took the first served person in our party about 20m to start eating as he patiently waited for the rest of us). They never refilled our water jugs. They forgot multiple items that we first ordered (when asked about the hot chocolate that was clearly not coming after we finished eating all our food, we were told "it's coming...". It came with our bill. 4 of them (the brothers??) verbally berated me for knocking on the kitchen window to kindly fix the bill for the items we didn't receive since nobody bothered to be in the table area of the restaurant. I walked up to the kitchen door and knocked several times but they couldn't hear me because Lauryn Hill was on blast. When I opened the door (I never set foot inside their sacred kitchen) and after the fourth "excuse me", they all aggressively approached me and asked "are you serious???", "was that necessary?", etc. They literally threw the revised receipt book at my table after verbally berating me. They even decided to piss all over their own toilets (yes, the worker) in between me and my friend using the bathroom (I left it clean). If you have any dignity, do not come to this excuse for a restaurant. Also terribly overpriced for Aunt Jemima waffles and hormone injected chicken. About $250 for a party of 10 for breakfast and lunch menu items. LOL really? At least I got some credit card points. Maybe I'll use them to fly to Alabama to get real food and hospitality. I was torn about writing about our recent visit, but I felt my experience needed to be shared. My husband and I went for breakfast last Sunday. We've always enjoyed their food. We haven't been out much since COVID so we decided to support a local small business. We ordered, it took our food an hour to come. When it came out the food was COLD and they only brought half the food to the table because the waiter gave our food to another table, still trying to figure this out since we were a table of 2 and he gave it to a table of 4. On top of that the food was served on a small salad plate. The owner and the waiter were so distracted with the same table of young women that clearly we were an after thought. By the time they brought the second half of our food we didn't even want it. We were there a total of 90 minutes never asked if we wanted a refill on drinks, how was the food or apologize for the mix up with the food. In these hard times for everyone I would think a small business would appreciate those that come and support them. I'm risking my health possibly catching COVID to support and this is what I get in return. I can say that was my last time visiting. read more

This was my fist time at the establishment, it was a lil hard to find but I think that was the gps doing. I went with two others.The place when you walk in is no bigger than a shoe box. It is very small, you cannot seat yourself and must give notice to the server to be seated. There is no sign to let you know though, so a couple of people can in looking to sit but was given a wait time. Drinks are served in mason jars, but inside the jars are your fork and napkin. Which I didn't like because the jar now has lint specs from the napkin. I just asked for water, the waiter came and brought a vase with a cork. I poured a little in my jar to taste. Tasted like tap water to me. Cousin had sweet tea, I tasted it I liked that more than the water. I will provide pictures of the food. I had a breakfast sandwich, it was fried egg steak and cheese with house cousins had a French toast platter, and a red velvet waffle with chicken wings. My sandwich was ok I thought the house sauce provided the flavor. For the platters there feedback was French toast was ok, had no powdered sugar. The eggs were under cooked they were too wet, and the bacon came with more fat than bacon. Comments about the chicken was fried good but there wasn't enough seasoning. The waffle tasted good but the presentation was lacking. Now on the service, there was none. Knives and spoons were not included in silverware. We weren't checked on or asked about the food. 2 bites 2 minute rule did not apply here. When getting the bill they charged extra for cheese but didn't state that when ordering. Also a 20% gratuity was automatically included in our bills. Took a long time to receive our cards back when paying. Overall experience wasn't great, I don't think I will be back.
