Location, location, location...400 East is in a shopping center off of route 137. The shopping center has a lot of stores in it but almost no restaurants. This is a major thoroughfare so if you are on your way to Chatham, Orleans, or Harwichport, you drive right by it. Because it is in a shopping center, parking is never a problem. This place can get very busy but even when you have to wait, you can get a drink at their bar and I found the staff to be very pleasant and helpful. I usually don't like to wait for a table but I found the whole experience here to be pretty painless. This place has been here for a long time so it is well known by locals and by tourists that frequent the area. It is open year round which is also a plus. It is definitely family friendly and the menu reflects this so don't hesitate to bring even your most discerning little diner with you. It is also a pretty crazy place most nights so loud rug rats or teens will not offend! (For that matter, loud, slightly inebriated adults will also fit right in.) The inside is nothing special. There is dark wood everywhere which hides a pretty dull, mall like, interior. The food is solid. They do seem to care how it is prepared and they use better quality ingredients which I give them credit for as many restaurants on the Cape could care less about preparation and quality ingredients. At least one of the reviews cited the lobster roll as being quite ample and well prepared. I thought it was excellent and quite a bargain. They give you plenty of lobster and don't kill it with a bunch of mayo. Many fish dishes here but they also have plenty of other options. I know they claim to specialize in Italian fare but their definition of Italian is really pizza and pasta dishes. Pretty uninspiring. Cajun chicken and angel hair pasta isn't going to be on most Italian menus in Rome... Prime rib is one of their specialties and it has a good flavor and it is ample in size. Portions overall are generous at 400 East and the prices are reasonable. They also have a good bar service so if you just want a drink and an appetizer, 400 East is worth the stop. Service was a bit lax but it was a really busy night when our party ate there recently. Overall, an okay spot. read more

Went to the 400 Club tonight. My husband got the fish and chips, which is always good. I got the shrimp scampi. It was loaded with lots of uncooked garlic, which totally overpowered the dish with a very unpleasant taste. It was awful! Should have read the reviews before going. Someone else complained about this problem a couple of years ago. They did nothing about this. Obviously they're not learning from the valid complaints of their good paying customers. So disappointed. Ordered take-out. Nachos with chili. There was no chili and really little else but stale nachos and a few onions and jalapeños. The $14 App Sampler included coconut shrimp that tasted like it was battered in some kind of cleaning solution. So, so, so disappointed. And I'm a frequent flyer, too. Had a horrible experience due to their practices of remaking an order. We came here on my birthday hoping for a great night. We got bad service instead. One of our party ordered shrimp scampi which had so much garlic in it it tasted like biting into a head of garlic. It actually stung your tongue. We sent it back.the waitress told us, that's scampi. Repeatedly. For future reference scampi should have a balanced taste of flavors including garlic. Not only garlic. She took the plate to kitchen and returned to tell us they would be RINSING OFF THE SHRIMP then cooking it again and serving it back to us So that she wouldn't have to charge us for it. Are you kidding me?! And they did. They rinsed it off and sent it back to us. Not only was the shrimp rinsed off, but we truly believe that the whole meal was rinsed and reserved. This is appalling and should never happen in a restaurant. Ever. We will not be returning and you better believe I will warn as many people as I can to avoid this place. read more

After twelve days on the Cape, I couldn't bear the thought of another slab of fish for dinner. But my family didn't want meat either. 400 East to the rescue! In marked contrast to most Cape restaurants, 400 East had well more than the usual one or two vegetarian afterthought items. My daughter loved her homemade mac & cheese. My wife said her hummus & veggie roll up was great. And my veggie burger was one of the best I've had. From our one experience, 400 East does not appear to be fancy food. Worst meal I have had in years. The wine on special was one step above vinegar. Ordered the beef stew and corn bread. The stew was ok but the corn bread was so under cooked it couldn't hold its shape. I can't believe anyone would plate it, actually loose, not just a bit gummy. Tried the coffee toward the end of the meal and it may still have had the pot cleaner still in it. One sip and I quit. Skipped desert. read more

WE have eaten here several times, but a most recent visit on a Sunday in mid-August, the lobster roll was a huge disappointment...I really should have simply sent it back as the lobster was very cold, soggy and limp....it would be a shame if this had been frozen previously (on Cape Cod!?) or maybe someone cluelessly piled ice on it to keep it cold ( supposed to put the ice in a bag or else it melts all over the fish=soggy) One person has the swordfish special and said it was good; another said the 400 burger was okay (not as great as previously). For years my family has occasionally frequented 400 East because of its proximity to our vacation home and general steadiness of the quality of the food. The food is nothing special but has historically been consistently ok. Until yesterday that is. We stopped off for some chowder/soup and apps for a light lunch. While the majority of the items we ordered were ok, we were surprised when we cut open a boneless buffalo tender to find it raw inside. I get that cooking mishaps happen, but this should never happen at a restaurant. While our waitress promptly brought us a new order, I was shocked to find it on the bill at the end of the meal and no visit from the manager. That's pretty lame considering it is only an $8 item. I'm not into salmonella poisoning any time (especially while dining out), or short-sighted customer service. After over 15 years of occasional visits (2-3 times per year) at 400 East, yesterday's was our last. read more

Lunch special had ok roast beef but no cheddar cheese or horseradish sauce as advertised...as a result, it was a dry tasteless clump of beef with raw tasting fries. This is a American pub that has a wide and varied menu that has been there for years. I was not going to write a review till I read some of the others and actually laughed at them! Onion soup that had to many onions?15 years of good meals but one undercooked item warrants a 1 star? Why would you go back if you gave it one star last time? Dinner date out for 2 and the bill comes to 30 dollars, my god! So they get 5 from me based on there fresh hand formed burgers, butcher shop quality steaks and half priced apps at the bar as a mass. Legal happy hour! Drinks are always a good pour and you have a tv in front of you at any seat in the bar. Waitstaff and bartenders have always been professional with me but then again I tip at least 15% unlike others on hear! This is one restaurant I am sorry I spent any money at. I took my girlfriend to this place for dinner tonight just to wait for a table for five minutes (wasn't busy at all), then be taken by a hostess to the back of the dining room. Food did come out somewhat timely, we got chicken Parmesan which was prepared with jar sauce, and not worth the 18 dollars we spent on it, also we got French onion soup, which was a bowl full of cooked onions, a little broth and covered in cheese, couldn't finish it because of the excessive onions. Anyone can tell that it is a poor kitchen. At the end of the meal, which is what really compelled me to write this review, is that we had a paycheck of 30 dollars. We left a tip of four dollars because we paid for food that wasn't up to par, and got snobby service from our waitress who was clearly more enthralled with the bigger party next to us or anything else. As we were leaving, the waitress called her co-workers over and made completely rude and uncalled for comments steps away from us as we were leaving the establishment about the poor, deserved tip. All is all, rude, inexperienced staff, and the food is definitely not worth the price. If staff really want to talk about customers negatively, they should at least do it in their free time. read more
